Halo Infinite is the closest Game Pass alternative to Call of Duty multiplayer if you want compact competitive matches, familiar arena shooting and a more deliberate pace. Pick Battlefield 2042 for much larger military battles, The Finals for objective play and destruction, or Deep Rock Galactic when you would rather complete cooperative FPS missions. DOOM: The Dark Ages is an excellent fast first-person shooter, but its main value here is as a campaign change of pace, not as a player-versus-player replacement.
Catalog access is not permanent or universal. Your Game Pass tier, console or PC platform, country and the current store listing determine whether a game is included. Check those details before installing.

What makes a good Call of Duty alternative?
“Games like COD on Xbox Game Pass” can mean several different things. Some players want short arena matches, while others mainly want modern military weapons, constant action, objective modes or a squad-based social experience. No single substitute reproduces every part of Call of Duty multiplayer.
The five options below cover different needs:
- Halo Infinite: arena-style competitive multiplayer with a slower, more deliberate rhythm.
- Battlefield 2042: large-scale military player-versus-player combat.
- The Finals: competitive objective matches built around destruction.
- Deep Rock Galactic: cooperative first-person missions rather than adversarial multiplayer.
- DOOM: The Dark Ages: a high-speed single-player campaign alternative.
Microsoft’s store catalogs expose filters for cross-platform multiplayer, online multiplayer and Game Pass inclusion. Use those labels as a starting point, then open the individual listing because entitlements can differ by tier, platform and region.

Halo Infinite: the closest arena-style substitute
Start with Halo Infinite if what you miss is the rhythm of a focused multiplayer shooter: readable arenas, weapon control, movement decisions and matches where positioning matters as much as reflexes. TechRadar identifies it as a strong Call of Duty alternative because of its map design, satisfying weapons and a somewhat slower, more deliberate tempo.
Why COD players may prefer it
- Arena emphasis: The action is built around controlled spaces rather than the huge fronts of a military sandbox.
- Deliberate pacing: Encounters give you more room to choose when to challenge, rotate or hold an angle instead of relying only on rapid reaction.
- Map and weapon focus: Good map design and weapons that feel consistent make learning routes and engagements worthwhile.
- Battle-pass flexibility: TechRadar reports that the system does not depend on fear of missing out and that older passes can be revisited. That is useful if you join after a season has ended or play at your own pace.
What to expect when switching
Do not expect Halo Infinite to feel like a reskinned Call of Duty. Its slower rhythm changes how you approach an encounter. Spend your first sessions learning sightlines, power-weapon locations and the safest routes between objectives instead of trying to reproduce a COD sprint-and-fire pattern. The value of the game is its arena identity, not a one-to-one recreation of COD’s military presentation.
Who should choose it
Choose Halo Infinite when your priority is competitive multiplayer in a contained arena format. It is the strongest first download for a solo player who wants to queue into PvP, learn maps and improve mechanical decision-making without moving to a massive battlefield.

Battlefield 2042: for large-scale military combat
Battlefield 2042 is the better answer to “what should I play instead of Call of Duty multiplayer?” when the important word is military rather than compact. Microsoft’s shooter catalog lists it for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S through EA Play.
How the experience differs
Battlefield 2042 trades the tight arena for broad military engagements. The increased scale changes your responsibilities: you are more likely to think about squad movement, the route to an objective and how your position contributes to a wider fight. A player who finds COD matches too compressed may appreciate that extra room; someone who wants immediate, predictable duels may find it less direct.

Teamwork and match expectations
Large-scale PvP rewards awareness beyond the opponent directly in front of you. Watch the flow of the battle, stay near useful teammates and choose fights that support the current objective. The game is a better fit for players who enjoy the feeling of participating in a broader military operation than for those seeking a pure individual-aim test.
Access checklist
Because the Microsoft listing identifies EA Play as the route to access, inspect the store page while signed into the account that will play. Confirm all three items:
- Your Game Pass plan includes EA Play.
- Your intended platform is covered; the catalog entry specifically names Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
- The game is currently available in your country, since catalog entitlements can change.
The Finals: objective competition with destruction
The Finals is the pick for players who want competitive multiplayer but are ready to move away from straightforward military match design. Microsoft’s current cross-platform multiplayer shooter catalog includes it with a Game Pass inclusion label.
What makes it different
The Finals centers competitive play on objectives and a destructible environment. Instead of treating the map as a fixed backdrop, teams must react as routes, cover and defensive positions change. That makes the match less about repeating one memorized lane and more about creating an opening, protecting a scoring opportunity and adapting when the environment no longer offers the same cover.
How to approach your first matches
- Read the objective before chasing eliminations; winning the fight that protects a scoring play is usually more valuable than an isolated takedown.
- Expect plans to change when destruction removes cover or opens a new route.
- Communicate the location of threats and the safest approach rather than splitting up for unrelated fights.
- Judge the game on its objective loop, not on whether it reproduces COD’s weapon handling or match structure.
Best for
Choose The Finals if you enjoy ranked or competitive tension but want teamwork, scoring decisions and environmental disruption to matter. It is a stronger recommendation than Battlefield 2042 for a player who wants objective pressure without moving all the way to cooperative PvE.

Deep Rock Galactic: cooperative FPS missions
Deep Rock Galactic is the largest change in this list because it replaces adversarial multiplayer with cooperative missions. Microsoft’s cross-platform multiplayer shooter catalog lists it with a Game Pass inclusion label.

Many Call of Duty players are really looking for a reason to play an FPS with friends. Deep Rock Galactic supplies that social loop through squad-based missions in which the team advances a shared objective. The appeal is not beating another human team; it is coordinating movement, surviving encounters and completing the assignment together.
What changes when you move to PvE
- Opponents: You face enemies controlled by the game rather than another player’s loadout and tactics.
- Success condition: The squad succeeds or fails together, so an individual highlight play matters less than completing the mission.
- Communication: Call out routes, threats and needed assistance because the team’s combined awareness is more important than a solo kill streak.
- Pace: Mission flow can include travel, preparation and escalation rather than a constant sequence of short PvP engagements.
Who should pick it
Choose Deep Rock Galactic when your group values cooperation, shared objectives and a lower-pressure alternative to competitive matchmaking. If you specifically need a PvP substitute for COD, start with Halo Infinite or The Finals instead.
DOOM: The Dark Ages: a campaign change of pace
DOOM: The Dark Ages is a fast first-person shooter, but it should not be presented as a like-for-like multiplayer replacement. The official Xbox description calls it a first-person prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal. TechRadar reports that it launched on Xbox Game Pass and highlights its medieval setting and chainsaw-shield combat.
Why a multiplayer fan might still want it
After repeated competitive matches, a focused campaign can provide intense FPS combat without matchmaking, team balance or an opposing squad. The medieval setting and chainsaw-shield combat give it a distinct identity, so it works as a deliberate change of pace rather than a substitute for arena or objective PvP.

When not to choose it
Do not install DOOM: The Dark Ages expecting a new competitive playlist, cross-platform team queue or a COD-style progression loop. Its recommendation belongs in the “I want a fast FPS tonight” category, not the “I need a multiplayer replacement” category.
Which game should you choose?
Use this decision path if you are comparing multiplayer FPS on Game Pass and do not know where to begin:
- Want the closest arena experience? Choose Halo Infinite.
- Want huge military battles? Choose Battlefield 2042, after confirming EA Play access.
- Want competitive objectives and destruction? Choose The Finals.
- Want to play with friends against AI-controlled enemies? Choose Deep Rock Galactic.
- Want a solo, high-speed campaign? Choose DOOM: The Dark Ages.
If two answers fit, decide by the type of teamwork you want. Halo Infinite emphasizes personal positioning and arena awareness; Battlefield 2042 asks you to function inside a larger battle; The Finals makes coordination around an objective central; Deep Rock Galactic makes cooperation the entire mission structure.

What the reported tiers mean
Windows Central reports that Game Pass Premium includes more than 200 games and multiplayer, but excludes day-one releases and Call of Duty. The same breakdown describes Game Pass Ultimate as including more than 400 games, multiplayer, EA Play, Ubisoft+ Classics and day-one first-party releases including Call of Duty. These benefits are time-sensitive; verify the live plan page for your country before relying on them.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
A reliable verification sequence
- Open the game’s current Xbox or Microsoft Store listing while signed into the account that will play.
- Check the displayed Game Pass inclusion label rather than relying on an old search result or a third-party list.
- Confirm whether the listing says online multiplayer, cross-platform multiplayer or both, depending on how you intend to play.
- For Battlefield 2042, confirm that your plan includes EA Play and that the Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S entitlement shown is the one you need.
- Check the platform requirement. A catalog entry can cover console generations or PC differently.
- Review the listing again if the install button disappears or the game asks you to purchase it; the catalog or your subscription may have changed.
Cross-platform and cross-generation details
“Cross-platform” and “cross-generation” are not interchangeable. Cross-platform multiplayer concerns playing with people on another supported platform. Cross-generation support concerns different console generations, such as Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Microsoft exposes separate filters for these concepts, so use the exact label that matches your group.
The current catalog evidence identifies Halo Infinite in Microsoft’s cross-generation multiplayer materials. It lists The Finals and Deep Rock Galactic in a cross-platform multiplayer shooter catalog. Battlefield 2042 is identified for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S through EA Play. Confirm the live listing for your particular combination of console, PC and subscription before inviting friends.
Common mistakes when replacing Call of Duty
Choosing by genre label alone
All five games are first-person shooters, but their reasons to play are different. A player searching for PvP who installs DOOM: The Dark Ages may be disappointed, while a squad looking for cooperative missions may not enjoy Halo Infinite’s competitive focus. Select by mode first, then by setting and pace.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Assuming every Game Pass plan has the same catalog
Premium and Ultimate do not have identical benefits in the reported tier breakdown. EA Play access is especially important for Battlefield 2042. Read the plan and game pages together.
Confusing a catalog label with permanent ownership
Game Pass inclusion means access under the current subscription terms. It does not establish that the game will remain in the catalog indefinitely. If access matters for a long-term group, confirm the listing each time you renew or change plans.
Expecting familiar pacing
Halo Infinite is deliberately slower than COD, Battlefield 2042 is larger in scale, The Finals changes around objectives and destruction, Deep Rock Galactic is PvE, and DOOM: The Dark Ages is campaign-focused. Give each game a fair trial on its own terms rather than judging only by whether it reproduces COD’s tempo.
A practical first-week plan
For a solo competitive player
- Install Halo Infinite first and spend several matches learning the arena layout and deliberate timing.
- If you want more objective pressure and environmental change, try The Finals next.
- Move to Battlefield 2042 if the smaller match scale still feels restrictive and you want a broader military battle.
For a group of friends
- Verify that everyone has a compatible platform and the required Game Pass entitlement.
- Choose Deep Rock Galactic for a cooperative mission night.
- Choose The Finals when the group wants direct competition and shared objective decisions.
- Choose Battlefield 2042 when the party prefers a large military setting and can use the same supported generation.
For a break from matchmaking
Play DOOM: The Dark Ages as the campaign option. Its fast combat keeps the FPS feel while removing the need to coordinate a team or wait for a competitive lobby.
Bottom line
For most Call of Duty multiplayer fans, start with Halo Infinite: it is the clearest arena-style alternative and the least disruptive change in how you play. Battlefield 2042 is the answer for large military battles, The Finals for objective-driven competitive destruction, and Deep Rock Galactic for cooperative FPS missions. Keep DOOM: The Dark Ages in a separate campaign category. Before installing any of them, verify the current Game Pass tier, EA Play requirement, platform coverage and regional availability.
