Best game-launcher alternatives to Xbox mode on Windows 11

For a mixed Windows 11 library, Playnite Fullscreen is the strongest Xbox mode alternative. It brings Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, EA App, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Xbox PC and other libraries into one controller-friendly interface. Use Steam Big Picture when nearly everything you play is in Steam, GOG GALAXY for a GOG-centered collection, and LaunchBox with Big Box when emulation and retro systems are the priority.

What Xbox mode does on Windows 11

Microsoft describes Xbox mode as a Windows experience that starts your gaming home app as a launcher and runs games and apps full screen. The goal is a console-style front end: you sit down, use a controller, choose a title, and avoid the normal desktop while the game starts.

Xbox mode is not a universal Windows feature on every installation. Microsoft’s gaming documentation says it requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and is available only in supported markets. Both the version requirement and the market rollout can change, so check Microsoft’s current Windows Gaming documentation before treating Xbox mode as an option on a particular PC.

The alternatives below are regular Windows applications rather than a replacement for the Windows shell itself. They can provide a full-screen launcher, library organization and controller navigation, but the store client associated with a game may still need to run in the background or open for authentication, updates, digital rights checks or cloud services.

Best Xbox mode alternatives at a glance

Launcher Best fit Store coverage Controller and fullscreen experience Emulation and retro focus Setup profile
Playnite Fullscreen Mixed PC-store libraries Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, EA App, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Xbox PC and additional integrations Dedicated fullscreen, couch-oriented interface with gamepad navigation Useful as a general library manager; the supplied product description does not establish a specific emulation advantage More initial integration work, then one collection to maintain
Steam Big Picture Steam-heavy libraries and TV PCs Steam games; it is not a complete cross-store aggregator Designed for a TV and controller; supports official Microsoft Xbox controllers Not its primary purpose Lowest friction if Steam is already your main client
GOG GALAXY GOG-centered collections GOG plus official and community-created integrations; coverage depends on the current integration set Useful as a GOG launcher and possible secondary aggregator; it is not presented in the product description as a dedicated Xbox-style couch shell Not its primary purpose Simple for GOG games; extra connections may need maintenance
LaunchBox / Big Box Retro systems, ROM collections and emulation Primarily a library manager for emulation and retro content; modern PC-store coverage is not its defining strength Big Box supplies themed, living-room presentation Strongest match in this group Metadata and artwork work can be substantial; current premium requirements must be checked

None of these products has an independently measured launch-speed, battery-use or resource-reduction advantage established in the available documentation. Choose by library coverage and controls rather than an unsupported performance promise.

1. Playnite Fullscreen: the best mixed-store replacement

Playnite is a free, open-source Windows game-library manager. Its official description lists integrations for Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, EA App, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Xbox PC and more. Instead of switching between separate launchers, you browse one collection and let Playnite call the relevant client when a title starts.

Why it fits Xbox mode users

  • One collection: games from several PC stores can appear together instead of being divided by storefront.
  • Fullscreen couch mode: the interface is designed for gamepad navigation and a television-distance viewing experience.
  • No license fee: Playnite’s official site describes the application as free and open source.
  • Flexible organization: a unified list is useful when the same PC has Microsoft, Steam, Epic or GOG purchases.

Set up Playnite for a controller-first desktop

  1. Install the current Playnite release from its official Windows distribution and open the desktop interface once. The first run is where you can allow the application to discover existing game clients.
  2. Open Playnite’s Add-ons area, browse the available library integrations, and install the connectors for the storefronts you actually use. Integration names and availability can change between releases.
  3. In the library settings for each connector, sign in or point Playnite to the installed client when requested. Do not assume that adding an integration transfers ownership or removes the need for the original store application.
  4. Run a library update. Review duplicates, missing cover art and titles that were imported with an incorrect executable before moving to the living-room setup.
  5. Switch to Playnite’s Fullscreen view from its main interface. Pair and test the controller before leaving the desktop so you know that navigation, launching and returning to the library all work from the sofa.
  6. Use Playnite’s settings to enable its Windows-start option if you want it ready after sign-in. The exact label can vary by release; this starts Playnite as an application and is not the same as replacing the Windows shell.

What still happens behind the scenes

Playnite is an organizer and front end, not a replacement for every store’s services. A Steam, Epic, EA, Ubisoft, Battle.net or Xbox PC title can still trigger its parent client, a sign-in prompt, an update process or a permissions request. If a game fails to launch, first open the associated client directly, finish any pending login or update, and then retry it from Playnite.

When Playnite is not the right choice

Playnite requires more preparation than opening Steam’s Big Picture interface. Every additional storefront adds an integration to configure and occasionally repair. If your library is almost entirely Steam, that setup work buys little. If you want a curated emulation cabinet with elaborate themes, LaunchBox and Big Box deserve closer attention.

2. Steam Big Picture: the simplest Steam-first option

Valve describes Big Picture as a Steam mode designed for a television and game controller. It is available on Windows 10 and newer, which includes supported Windows 11 installations, and Valve documents support for official Microsoft Xbox controllers.

Start Big Picture

  1. Install or update the Steam desktop client and sign in to the account that owns your games.
  2. Select the Big Picture icon in the Steam window. In client versions that expose the traditional menu, the same command is available under View > Big Picture Mode.
  3. Connect an XInput-compatible PC controller before opening a game. Confirm that the controller appears in Steam’s controller settings and test the guide, menu and navigation buttons.
  4. From Big Picture, browse the Steam library and launch a title. Use Steam’s own controller and display settings to adjust button layouts, resolution and television scaling.

The important limitation

Big Picture organizes Steam. It does not, by itself, turn Epic Games Store, GOG, EA App, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net and Xbox PC purchases into one catalog. You can add some non-Steam programs manually, but that is not equivalent to the cross-store discovery and metadata provided by a library manager such as Playnite.

Choose Big Picture when

  • Most of your games are purchased through Steam.
  • You want the shortest path from a Windows desktop to a controller-friendly television interface.
  • You prefer Steam’s built-in updates, cloud features and controller configuration to a separate aggregator.

3. GOG GALAXY: a GOG-centered library with optional integrations

GOG’s official description presents GALAXY as a Windows game launcher. GOG users can add games through official and community-created integrations, making it possible to use GALAXY as a secondary aggregator when its current connectors cover the stores you care about.

What GOG games retain

For GOG games, GOG says features such as automatic updates, cloud saves, cross-play and rollbacks remain available. Those benefits apply to the GOG versions and should not be assumed for a game imported from another storefront.

Basic setup

  1. Install GOG GALAXY for Windows and sign in to your GOG account.
  2. Open the client’s integrations or connected-platform area and review the official and community options currently offered.
  3. Connect only the services you want in the same library, then allow GALAXY to synchronize titles and status information.
  4. Check several games manually. A connected platform can show a title without guaranteeing that every launch command, achievement, cloud-save state or multiplayer feature is exposed through GALAXY.

Its practical boundary

GALAXY is a sensible first stop for someone whose purchases are mainly on GOG. It can also reduce launcher switching when its integrations remain current. Verify the present integration list before promising yourself that it will cover every storefront in a mixed Windows 11 collection, and do not treat it as a guaranteed full-screen Xbox mode replacement.

4. LaunchBox and Big Box: choose this for retro and emulation collections

Playnite’s comparison documentation lists LaunchBox among comparable library managers and characterizes it as primarily focused on emulation and retro gaming. Its Big Box presentation adds themed, living-room browsing with extensive metadata and artwork options.

Where it excels

  • Organizing ROMs, emulators, platforms and regional game variants.
  • Displaying box art, screenshots, manuals and other metadata in a cabinet-style interface.
  • Using Big Box themes to create a console-like presentation for a television or arcade cabinet.

Where it is a weaker Xbox mode substitute

LaunchBox is not the default recommendation for a modern library divided among Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, EA App, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net and Xbox PC. Its identity is the retro and emulation workflow, not a universal PC-store account hub. Current pricing, premium feature boundaries and edition requirements should be verified on the official LaunchBox documentation before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan the import carefully

  1. Create a clear folder structure for ROMs, disc images, BIOS files and emulator installations before importing anything.
  2. Use LaunchBox’s import tools to select the platforms and files you actually own and are permitted to use.
  3. Review the matched metadata rather than accepting every result automatically; regional releases and similarly named games can be confused.
  4. Open Big Box and test controller navigation, emulator launch, exit commands and return-to-menu behavior on the display where the system will be used.

Which launcher combines Steam, Epic and Game Pass?

Among the options covered here, Playnite is the clearest fit because its official integration list includes Steam, Epic Games Store and Xbox PC. “Xbox PC” is the relevant category for Microsoft’s PC library; individual Game Pass titles can still depend on the Xbox app, Microsoft account authentication, licensing checks and the current integration’s capabilities.

Do not infer that an imported game has identical features in every front end. Achievements, cloud saves, play-time data, updates, overlays and multiplayer services are controlled by the underlying storefront and game. A launcher can provide one browse-and-launch screen without reproducing each client’s complete feature set.

How to build a Steam Deck-like launcher on Windows 11

A Steam Deck-like result comes from combining a full-screen front end, an XInput-compatible PC controller and sensible Windows startup behavior. The software choice depends on where your games live; the physical setup is broadly the same.

  1. Choose the front end: use Playnite Fullscreen for multiple storefronts, Big Picture for a Steam-dominant library, GOG GALAXY for GOG-first use, or Big Box for retro collections.
  2. Connect the controller: pair a wired or wireless XInput-compatible controller and verify it in the launcher before adjusting game-specific mappings.
  3. Prepare the display: set the Windows display resolution and scaling for the television or monitor, then select a readable fullscreen layout inside the launcher.
  4. Handle sign-in first: open each required store client once, complete authentication and allow pending updates. This prevents a couch session from stopping at a desktop login dialog.
  5. Configure startup: enable the launcher’s own start-with-Windows option where available, or place its shortcut in the Windows startup apps workflow. Keep normal Windows sign-in available for troubleshooting.
  6. Test the complete loop: start the PC, navigate without a mouse, launch a game, quit it with the controller and return to the library. Repeat with one title from each connected storefront.

This arrangement can feel console-like without claiming to be a literal replacement for Microsoft’s Xbox mode. The launcher remains a Windows program, and store clients may appear when a title needs them.

Controller, fullscreen and startup trade-offs

Need Best match Reason Trade-off
One library across several PC stores Playnite Fullscreen Its listed integrations span the major stores and Xbox PC Each integration can require sign-in, configuration and occasional maintenance
Steam games from a sofa Steam Big Picture Purpose-built for a TV and controller Other storefronts are not automatically combined
GOG ownership and rollback support GOG GALAXY GOG-specific cloud, update, cross-play and rollback features remain available for GOG games Third-party integration coverage can change

Common problems and fixes

A game appears but will not start

Open the game’s original store client directly. Complete any login, update, permission or first-run setup, then refresh the library in the front end. A launcher entry cannot bypass an expired session or a missing client dependency.

The controller works in menus but not in the game

Check whether the title expects XInput, DirectInput, keyboard input or a proprietary profile. Test the controller in the storefront’s own settings, disable conflicting remappers, and apply a per-game layout only after confirming the hardware is visible to Windows.

Artwork or titles are duplicated

Run the launcher’s library update, then merge or hide duplicate entries. Keep one canonical entry for a game when several storefront clients point to the same installation, and avoid deleting an entry until you know which client owns its launch command.

Fullscreen opens, but Windows is still visible

Confirm that the launcher itself is in fullscreen mode and that Windows display scaling is appropriate for the television. Also check whether a store client is configured to open a login or update window in front of the launcher; that behavior belongs to the client, not the fullscreen view.

Startup leaves the PC stuck at a login prompt

Temporarily disable automatic launcher startup, sign in to every required client from the desktop, and allow updates to finish. Re-enable startup only after each storefront can launch a test game without manual intervention.

Xbox mode is missing from Windows 11

Check the Windows version first: Microsoft lists Windows 11 24H2 or later as a requirement. Then check whether the feature has rolled out in your market. If either condition is not met, use one of the launchers above rather than changing system settings in an attempt to force an unavailable feature.

Decision guide

  • Choose Playnite Fullscreen if your purchases are split among Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, EA App, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net and Xbox PC, and you want one controller-friendly catalog.
  • Choose Steam Big Picture if Steam contains nearly everything you play and you value the shortest, most clearly documented TV-and-controller path.
  • Choose GOG GALAXY if GOG is your primary ecosystem and its current integrations cover the other services you want to see.
  • Choose LaunchBox with Big Box if the center of your collection is emulation, ROM management and retro presentation rather than modern PC storefronts.

Bottom line

Playnite Fullscreen is the most complete Xbox mode alternative for a mixed Windows 11 library because it combines the widest stated storefront coverage with a free, open-source and controller-oriented fullscreen interface. Steam Big Picture is the better low-maintenance answer for a Steam-only or Steam-dominant PC. GOG GALAXY is strongest when GOG features are the priority, while LaunchBox and Big Box belong in a retro-focused setup. In every case, keep the original store clients installed and authenticated, because the front end organizes launches but does not replace the services that own and operate the games.
