Short answer: choose SameBoy on Windows when you want accurate, focused Game Boy and Game Boy Color emulation. Choose mGBA if your library also includes Game Boy Advance games. On Android, RetroArch is the most flexible option, while Pizza Boy GBC is the simpler standalone choice. On iPhone or iPad, use SameBoy for a dedicated Game Boy app or Delta for an all-in-one emulator. RetroArch is also available on iOS, although store builds can expose different capabilities.
Your first decision is not the operating system; it is the software library. Original Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles need a GB/GBC-focused emulator. Game Boy Advance titles require GBA support, which makes mGBA or a suitable RetroArch core the better fit. Save states, rewind, controller mapping, link features, and netplay are core-dependent, so do not assume every RetroArch setup behaves identically.

Best picks at a glance
| Platform | Best focused choice | Best for GBA or broader libraries | Easiest alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows | SameBoy for GB/GBC | mGBA for GB, GBC, and GBA; RetroArch for multiple systems | SameBoy |
| Android | RetroArch with a Game Boy core | RetroArch with mGBA for GBA support | Pizza Boy GBC for a standalone GB/GBC app |
| iPhone/iPad | SameBoy for focused GB/GBC play | Delta for an all-in-one setup; RetroArch for a multi-system frontend | SameBoy |
SameBoy is the focused recommendation for Windows and iPhone/iPad in the comparison. RetroArch is the flexible route when you want one frontend across systems or devices. mGBA is the practical choice when Game Boy Advance matters, but its own project documentation says it has no official Android or iOS port; on mobile, use its libretro core through RetroArch instead.

What to decide before installing an emulator
Which Game Boy generations do you need?
Game Boy software is split into three useful compatibility groups:
#1 Best Overall

- Game Boy: the original monochrome system.
- Game Boy Color: GB/GBC software, including titles designed for the Color hardware.
- Game Boy Advance: a later platform with a different hardware target and a larger software library.
SameBoy is aimed at original Game Boy and Game Boy Color play. mGBA supports GB, GBC, and GBA files, so it is the more versatile single emulator when your collection spans generations. RetroArch can cover the same range by loading an appropriate core, but the exact feature set belongs to the selected core, not to RetroArch as a whole.
Do you want a standalone app or a frontend?
A standalone emulator opens a focused application with fewer layers between you and a game. A frontend such as RetroArch manages cores, playlists, shaders, remapping, and multiple systems from one interface. The trade-off is setup complexity: a frontend gives you more control but requires you to choose and install the correct core for each system.
Will you use touch controls or a controller?
All three target platforms can be used with on-screen controls, but a Bluetooth controller is a useful optional accessory if touch buttons feel cramped. The mGBA and Gearboy core documentation lists controller input and remapping support. RetroArch also provides a common place to configure controls, although the available options can vary by core and by the platform build.

SameBoy: the focused GB and GBC recommendation
SameBoy is the best fit when your Windows library is limited to original Game Boy and Game Boy Color software. Its narrow focus is an advantage: you do not need to configure a broader multi-system environment simply to play GB and GBC titles.
Choose SameBoy when you value a dedicated experience, want to keep setup simple, or do not need Game Boy Advance support. It is not the recommendation for a library centered on GBA because the comparison positions mGBA as the better fit for that generation.
mGBA: the Windows choice for GB, GBC, and GBA
mGBA is a strong desktop option when one application must handle all three generations. Its documented file support includes .gb, .gbc, and .gba. The project describes itself as a new-generation Game Boy Advance emulator while also providing good Game Boy and Game Boy Color emulation.
mGBA officially supports Windows 7 and newer according to its FAQ. Its documented feature table marks battery saves, save states, rewind, controls, remapping, and rumble as supported. Netplay is marked unsupported for the mGBA core, so do not select it expecting built-in online link play.

RetroArch: best when Windows is one of several systems
RetroArch is preferable when you want a single interface for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and other systems. You install a suitable libretro core, then load your game through the frontend. The current stable version listed on RetroArch’s platform page is 1.22.2.
RetroArch is more involved than a focused emulator because you are managing both the frontend and the core. It becomes worthwhile if you want common playlists, shaders, controller profiles, remapping, or a consistent workflow across several consoles. For a small GB/GBC-only library, SameBoy is usually the less complicated path.
Best Game Boy emulators for Android
RetroArch: the flexible Android recommendation
RetroArch officially supports Android and can run Game Boy-capable cores such as Gearboy and mGBA. This makes it the strongest choice when you need flexibility, multiple systems, shaders, remapping, or a setup that can grow beyond Game Boy.
For GB and GBC software, Gearboy is a particularly relevant core. Its documented system coverage includes Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Super Game Boy content. It also lists link-cable support, battery-backed saves, save states, rewind, run-ahead, netplay, controls, and remapping.
Use the mGBA core instead when GBA support is the priority. The mGBA core loads .gba as well as .gb and .gbc files, but its documented feature table marks netplay unsupported. If online or link-style features are central to your plan, Gearboy’s documented capabilities are the closer match for GB/GBC use.
Pizza Boy GBC: the simpler standalone Android option
Pizza Boy GBC is the standalone Android alternative named in the comparison. It is a better fit for someone who wants a dedicated Game Boy Color application rather than a multi-system frontend with separately managed cores.
The practical distinction is workflow. A standalone app reduces the number of decisions during installation. RetroArch gives you more room to customize and expand, but you must select a core and understand which features that core provides.

Why mGBA itself is not the Android answer
mGBA’s official FAQ states that there is no official Android or iOS port. That does not prevent you from using mGBA technology on Android: install RetroArch and use the mGBA libretro core. It does mean you should not search for an official first-party mGBA mobile app as your primary setup.

SameBoy: the focused iOS choice
SameBoy is listed as an App Store option for focused Game Boy and Game Boy Color emulation. It is the straightforward recommendation if you want a dedicated GB/GBC app and do not need a broad multi-system environment.
Delta: the all-in-one alternative
Delta is the alternative for readers who want an all-in-one iPhone or iPad emulator rather than a Game Boy-only application. The comparison names it as the broader option; choose it when consolidating several supported systems is more important than using a narrowly focused GB/GBC app.
RetroArch on iOS
RetroArch’s official platform information lists iOS support. However, its store builds can differ from other releases to comply with platform-store policies. If a feature appears in documentation or in another RetroArch build but is missing from the version you installed, check the capabilities of that specific store build instead of assuming your configuration is faulty.
Feature comparison: saves, rewind, link play, BIOS, and controls
| Feature | mGBA core | Gearboy core | What it means for your choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game Boy support | Yes; loads .gb |
Yes | Both can handle original Game Boy software. |
| Game Boy Color support | Yes; loads .gbc |
Yes | Either core suits a GB/GBC library. |
| Game Boy Advance support | Yes; loads .gba |
Not established in the documented feature list | Use mGBA when GBA is required. |
| BIOS requirement | Optional | Boot ROM files optional | Both documented cores can start without mandatory BIOS files. |
| Battery-backed saves | Supported | Supported | Normal in-game saves are available in both documented core profiles. |
| Save states | Supported | Supported | You can preserve a point-in-time state in addition to the game’s own save system. |
| Rewind | Supported | Supported | Useful for correcting a recent mistake; performance depends on device and settings. |
| Run-ahead | Not stated | Supported | Gearboy documents run-ahead; do not assume it is available in every core. |
| Controller input and remapping | Supported | Supported | Both are suitable for external controllers and custom layouts. |
| Rumble | Supported | Not stated | mGBA explicitly documents rumble support. |
| Link or netplay features | Netplay unsupported | Link cable and netplay supported | Gearboy is the better-documented choice for connected GB/GBC play. |
“Not stated” means the documented feature list does not establish support; it is not a claim that the feature can never work. In RetroArch, the selected core determines these capabilities.
Do you need a BIOS?
For the documented mGBA and Gearboy cores, BIOS files are optional. You can therefore begin with the emulator and your game file without treating a BIOS as a mandatory prerequisite.
A BIOS or boot ROM can still matter for a particular compatibility goal, startup behavior, or hardware-authentic presentation. If an emulator asks for one, use only a file you are legally entitled to possess and follow that emulator’s instructions. Do not download random BIOS files from unverified sources.

How to set up a Game Boy emulator
Windows with SameBoy
- Download SameBoy from its legitimate project or distribution source and install the Windows build.
- Keep your legally obtained
.gband.gbcfiles in an organized folder. - Open the emulator, choose the command for opening or loading a game, and select a file.
- Open the input settings and map the keyboard or a connected controller.
- Test an in-game save before relying on save states. Keep normal battery saves and emulator save states as separate recovery options.
Windows with mGBA
- Install the Windows version of mGBA; the project lists Windows 7 or newer as supported.
- Place GB, GBC, and GBA files in folders that identify their system.
- Load a file with the matching extension:
.gb,.gbc, or.gba. - Configure controls, remapping, rewind, and any supported rumble device in the input or emulator settings.
- Create a test save state, close the emulator, and reload it so you know where state files are written before starting a long game.
Android with RetroArch
- Install RetroArch from a legitimate Android distribution.
- Install a Game Boy-capable core. Choose Gearboy for documented GB/GBC link and netplay features, or mGBA when GBA support is needed.
- Use RetroArch’s core-loading function, then load your legally obtained game file.
- Open the input settings to map touch controls or a Bluetooth controller. Save a core-specific or game-specific remap if you need a custom layout.
- Verify save, save-state, and rewind behavior with a test game before importing your entire library.
iPhone or iPad
- Install SameBoy, Delta, or RetroArch from an available legitimate distribution.
- Import only game files you are legally entitled to use through the app’s supported file-import workflow.
- For RetroArch, install and select the core that matches the generation you want to play.
- Pair a controller if touch controls are uncomfortable, then check the app’s input mapping.
- Test both an in-game save and a save state. Store backups according to the app’s documented file-management options.
Legal and file-safety considerations
Use game files obtained from cartridges you own or from downloads you are legally entitled to use. The technical documentation for these emulators does not establish a universal legal rule for ROM dumping or downloading because laws differ by jurisdiction. Check the rules that apply where you live instead of assuming that one country’s practice applies everywhere.
Keep original files unchanged and make working copies for emulator use. Avoid executable “ROM installers,” suspicious BIOS packages, and downloads that bundle unknown software. An emulator should need a game file, not a third-party launcher that asks for unrelated permissions.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The game opens with the wrong colors or generation
Check the file extension and selected core. A .gbc file should be loaded with a GB/GBC-capable core, while a .gba file needs GBA support such as mGBA. In RetroArch, confirm that you did not launch the file with a core intended for another system.
The app asks for a BIOS
For mGBA and Gearboy, the documented BIOS or boot ROM requirement is optional. Look for a setting that allows the built-in startup path, then test the game. If you deliberately add a BIOS, use a legally obtained file and place it exactly where the emulator’s own documentation specifies.
Save states work but the game’s normal save disappeared
Save states and battery-backed saves are different files and different mechanisms. Return to the game’s own save menu, allow the write to finish, and confirm the emulator has permission to write to its storage location. Do not overwrite your only copy of a working save while troubleshooting.
A controller is detected but buttons are wrong
Open the input-mapping screen, select the correct controller profile, and remap each button manually if necessary. Save the mapping for the selected core or game. RetroArch profiles can be core-specific, so a mapping that works in one core may not automatically apply to another.
Netplay or link play is missing
Check the core, not just the frontend. Gearboy documents link cable and netplay support, while the mGBA core’s feature table marks netplay unsupported. A different RetroArch core can therefore change the available networking options without any change to the frontend itself.
RetroArch on iPhone lacks an option shown elsewhere
Store builds may have different capabilities because of platform-policy requirements. Confirm the exact iOS build and its available menus before changing files or reinstalling. Missing functionality can be a build limitation rather than a configuration error.
Which emulator should you choose?
- Choose SameBoy on Windows if you want the simplest focused GB/GBC experience.
- Choose mGBA on Windows if your library includes GBA or you want one desktop emulator for GB, GBC, and GBA.
- Choose RetroArch on Windows if one multi-system frontend matters more than minimal setup.
- Choose RetroArch on Android for cores, shaders, remapping, controller flexibility, and expansion to other systems.
- Choose Pizza Boy GBC on Android when you want a standalone GB/GBC app with fewer frontend decisions.
- Choose SameBoy on iPhone or iPad for focused Game Boy play.
- Choose Delta on iPhone or iPad when an all-in-one emulator is more useful than a dedicated GB/GBC app.
For most readers, the final decision is straightforward: SameBoy for focused GB/GBC emulation, mGBA for desktop GBA support, and RetroArch when flexibility or multi-system coverage outweighs setup simplicity. Whichever route you take, select the core deliberately, test both kinds of saves, and use only game files you are legally entitled to use.
