Choose a Game Boy Color screen upgrade by its viewing window, shell fit and installation requirements—not by a “drop-in” label alone. Larger laminated panels may need a matching shell or extensive cutting, while original-window kits can preserve the stock opening. USB-C charging is a separate, more involved modification; a screen kit does not add it automatically.
Choose the screen by viewing window and shell fit
First decide whether you want a larger viewing area or want to keep the original screen opening. That choice affects which panel, lens and shell will fit, and whether the original shell needs to be cut. A screen advertised for a Game Boy Color should not be assumed to fit a Game Boy Pocket, original Game Boy or Game Boy Advance.

Game Boy Resource’s fitment notes describe these relevant GBC options:
Recommended Free Tools
| Kit | Fit and installation details | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| FunnyPlaying GBC 2.0 Q5 laminated IPS | The viewing area is larger than the stock window. Use a matching shell or cut the original shell extensively. Kits sold after Summer 2022 can operate without soldering for basic installation; soldering is needed for higher brightness and logo-color control, according to Game Boy Resource. | Confirm the revision and shell fit. Decide whether you want the features that require soldering. |
| Cloud Game Store 2.6-inch IPS | The larger viewing area requires a matching lens. The original shell needs cutting; a shell made for the panel avoids that cutting. Soldering is required for power. | Check whether the listing includes a compatible shell and lens, and whether you can solder the power connection. |
| Cloud Game Store 2.45-inch original-window kit | The standard kit fits the original screen opening without shell cuts, but requires one power solder point. Its laminated variant requires cutting. | Verify whether the listing is for the standard or laminated version. |

Check the exact product and its instructions
Kit names and product families do not tell you every revision’s requirements. Hispeedido’s catalog lists GBC screen kits, including full-size eight-palette IPS backlight kits with pre-cut shells. Its installation page provides separate materials, including a GBC OLED tutorial and a manual for its 2.8-inch laminated GBC LCD. Use the instructions for the exact product and revision you plan to buy, rather than assuming one GBC manual applies to another.
Hispeedido says its retail products are sold through its official site, AliExpress, eBay, Amazon and other mainstream platforms. That vendor-wide statement does not confirm a particular Amazon listing, its current stock or whether a specific listing includes every part you need. Check the live listing before ordering. Hispeedido’s shop and installation materials are starting points for matching a product to its documentation.

Also distinguish a screen upgrade for an original GBC from FunnyPlaying’s FPGBC. The FPGBC is a full replacement-console kit with its own dedicated housing and lithium battery requirements, not a screen kit for the original console. See FunnyPlaying’s FPGBC product information if you encounter that name while comparing options.
Confirm what the kit includes and what work it needs
A listing may be for a screen alone or bundle a shell, lens, battery or other hardware. Confirm each item rather than inferring it from product photos or a broad product title. For an original shell, look for explicit instructions about cutting; for a larger display, confirm that the lens opening matches the panel.
- Check that the kit is specifically for Game Boy Color.
- Confirm the panel’s viewing-window size and whether it is laminated.
- Verify whether a shell is included and whether it is designed for that panel; if keeping the OEM shell, check the documented cut requirements.
- Confirm that the lens is included and fits the display opening.
- Read the exact revision’s manual and check soldering requirements for the features you intend to use, not just basic display operation.
“No soldering” can refer only to basic use on a particular revision. It does not mean every feature is solder-free, and requirements vary among kits.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Treat USB-C charging as a separate modification
A USB-C charging board is not simply a replacement port. The documented Giltesa USB-C Charging Kit Pro replaces the GBC’s DC jack and original DC-DC board, is incompatible with OEM screens, and calls for substantial soldering and case modification. Battery choice also depends on modification to the battery compartment.
Before combining this charging mod with a screen upgrade, verify that the screen is compatible with the charging board and check the kit’s battery and case-work requirements. The documented incompatibility with OEM screens makes this especially important if you have not yet chosen a display. This is an advanced modification, not a default add-on for a screen replacement.
Quick Recap
Make the buying decision
- Identify the console: confirm that it is a Game Boy Color, not another Game Boy model.
- Pick the window: decide between a larger viewing area and an original-window replacement.
- Match the shell and lens: choose a shell designed for the panel or confirm the original-shell cutting needed; check that the lens is included and compatible.
- Check soldering by feature: use the manual for the exact revision and account for any soldering needed for power, brightness or controls.
- Review the full contents: confirm whether the listing includes a shell, lens, battery or charging hardware, rather than assuming a bundle.
- Plan USB-C separately: check screen compatibility, battery requirements, case work and charging-board instructions before combining modifications.
