Start with Adapt sound if your priority is clearer calls or media for your own hearing. Then compare Dolby Atmos and Equalizer options for the type of content you play. If sound is stronger in one ear, use Left/right sound balance; if you need both stereo channels in one earbud, turn on Mono audio.

There is no Samsung-published preset proven to make every Galaxy Z Fold sound clearer for every listener. The best result depends on your Fold generation, software, hearing profile, app, volume and output device. Use the settings below as a controlled starting point, keeping the option that improves speech intelligibility and tonal balance for you.

Which Galaxy Z Fold settings should you change first?

Change one control at a time and listen to the same short clip after each change. This prevents a louder or wider sound from being mistaken for clearer sound.

Goal First setting to try What it changes Important limitation
Personalized calls or media Adapt sound Tunes output to the profile or age group you select and the prompts you complete Some previews or hearing-test steps require connected headphones; menu availability varies by model and software
More spacious movie, music or game playback Dolby Atmos Applies content-oriented sound modes such as movie, music or voice It is an effect preference, not a verified universal clarity improvement
Too much bass, treble or a muddy voice range Equalizer Uses genre presets or frequency adjustments A setting that helps one recording or speaker can make another harsher or less natural
Uneven left and right output Left/right sound balance Moves the stereo image toward one channel It does not repair a damaged earbud, cable or speaker
Listening with one earbud Mono audio Combines the left and right channels into one signal It removes stereo separation
Sound going to the wrong device Separate app sound Routes a selected app to a chosen output device It changes routing, not the quality of the audio; the selected device must differ from the phone’s main output

Find the controls on your particular Fold

Samsung changes menu names and locations between Galaxy models and software releases. The Galaxy Z Fold6 manual places Adapt sound in Settings → Accessibility → Hearing enhancements → Adapt sound. Samsung’s broader Galaxy audio guide places it in Settings → Sounds and vibration → Sound quality and effects → Adapt sound. Both paths can be correct for different devices or versions.

#1 Best Overall
Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Use the settings search field and enter Adapt sound, Dolby Atmos, Equalizer, Mono audio or Separate app sound.
  3. If search returns no result, open the two menu paths above and check for Hearing enhancements or Sound quality and effects.
  4. Check your Fold’s model-specific manual if a control is absent. Do not assume that a menu shown on a Fold6 exists on an earlier or later generation.

Keep the phone’s software current when possible, but treat the labels shown on your device as authoritative. A feature can be renamed, moved or unavailable on a particular regional model.

Use Adapt sound for personalized clarity

Adapt sound is the strongest official starting point when calls or ordinary media are difficult to follow. Samsung describes it as optimizing sound for calls or media according to the profile you choose and the setup prompts you complete.

Set it up

  1. Open Settings → Accessibility → Hearing enhancements → Adapt sound, or use Settings search.
  2. Select the profile or age group offered by your Fold. Choose the option that most closely describes the listener rather than selecting a category simply because it sounds more powerful.
  3. Follow every on-screen prompt. The phone may offer a preview, hearing-test step or profile comparison.
  4. Connect headphones if the phone requests them. Samsung notes that some personalization previews or setup steps require connected headphones.
  5. Play a familiar conversation, podcast segment or video after setup. Keep the setting only if voices become easier to understand without uncomfortable brightness or distortion.

Adapt sound is a personalization tool, not a loudness boost that should be left on automatically for every person. If two people share the Fold, compare the result with the actual listener; a profile that helps one person can sound unnatural to another.

Choose the right test material

  • For calls, use a real or recorded conversation with ordinary speech, not music.
  • For media, use dialogue that you already know, with steady background sound.
  • Repeat the same passage before and after the change at the same volume.
  • Test the output you actually use: Fold speakers, wired headphones or a paired wireless device can produce different results.

Compare Dolby Atmos modes without chasing loudness

Dolby Atmos provides selectable sound effects intended for content such as movies, music and voice. On supported Galaxy phones, the available modes and labels can vary, so use the options displayed by your Fold.

  • 40 mm stereo drivers: Enjoy music, movies and spoken audio with stereo sound; the over-ear cushions provide passive sound isolation to help reduce surrounding distractions
  • Foldable for travel: Fold the headphones for storage between classes or commutes; 1.2 m braided cord for everyday use, with headphones and user manual included; carrying bag not included
  1. Open Settings → Sounds and vibration → Sound quality and effects.
  2. Open Dolby Atmos and note whether your phone offers modes such as movie, music or voice.
  3. Play one short, repeatable passage with Dolby Atmos off.
  4. Replay it with the mode that matches the content. Compare speech intelligibility, tonal balance, stereo width and any audible distortion or excess loudness.
  5. Leave the effect off if it makes dialogue less distinct, cymbals harsh or the sound artificially wide.

A wider or louder presentation is not automatically clearer. Spatial processing can be enjoyable for films or games while reducing the directness of a spoken voice. Judge it with the content you actually consume rather than with a generic demonstration clip.

Use Equalizer to correct a tonal problem

The Equalizer offers genre presets or frequency controls, depending on the Fold and software. It changes tonal balance; it does not identify a hearing profile or repair a faulty output device.

Compare presets

  1. Open Settings → Sounds and vibration → Sound quality and effects → Equalizer.
  2. Play a consistent clip and note the current setting.
  3. Try the available genre preset that matches the content, then compare it with Normal or the neutral option if available.
  4. Prefer the setting that keeps speech intelligible and instruments balanced at a comfortable volume.

Adjust frequencies carefully

If your Fold exposes individual bands, make small changes rather than moving every slider. A modest reduction in a boomy low range can uncover speech; excessive reduction makes music thin. A large boost in the high range can add apparent detail but may make sibilants and cymbals sharp. Because Samsung does not provide a controlled comparison showing one Equalizer curve is clearest for all listeners, record your own preferred position and reassess it with several recordings.

Fix one-sided listening with balance or mono

Left/right sound balance

Open Settings → Accessibility → Hearing enhancements and locate Left/right sound balance. Move the control only as far as needed to compensate for an uneven listening setup. Center it again when you return to normally balanced headphones or speakers.

Balance changes the relative level of the two stereo channels. It cannot correct a blocked earbud grille, a damaged cable, a poor Bluetooth connection or a failing phone speaker. Check those physical causes before making a large software adjustment.

Mono audio

In the same Hearing enhancements area, turn on Mono audio when you are using one earbud or need both stereo channels delivered through one side. Mono combines the left and right channels into one signal played through the headphone speakers. The trade-off is the loss of stereo separation, so turn it off for ordinary two-ear listening if you prefer a conventional stereo image.

Keep routing controls separate from quality controls

Separate app sound is useful when the right app is playing through the wrong output. It sends a selected app’s media to a chosen device while other audio follows the phone’s main output. Samsung specifies that the selected device must differ from the phone’s main audio output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings → Sounds and vibration → Separate app sound.
  2. Turn the feature on and choose the app whose media you want to route.
  3. Select the target device, such as a paired speaker or headphones, when offered.
  4. Make sure that target differs from the main audio output; otherwise the routing rule cannot provide a separate path.
  5. Play the app and confirm that sound is coming from the intended device.

This setting does not make a recording more detailed, remove distortion or improve the Fold’s speaker hardware. If the destination device itself sounds muffled, troubleshoot that device or connection after confirming the routing rule.

When wired headphones and UHQ upscaling matter

Samsung documents UHQ upscaling for wired headphone playback. It is therefore relevant only when your Fold and connected headset support the required path. A USB-C wired headset is optional: you do not need headphones to adjust the Fold’s core speaker settings, and their use does not establish that the built-in speakers will become clearer.

  • Verify that your specific Fold supports the connector and audio accessory you plan to use.
  • Connect the wired headset before opening the UHQ or personalization control if the phone asks for a connected device.
  • Compare UHQ on and off with the same passage and volume.
  • Keep the option that sounds cleaner to you; do not infer a universal improvement from the feature name.

If the headset is not detected, check the USB-C plug, remove debris from the port without forcing anything into it, try another compatible headset and confirm that the accessory is intended for digital USB-C audio rather than requiring a separate analog adapter.

A repeatable way to find your clearest combination

Use a short listening test instead of changing several effects at once. This method is practical listening guidance, not a Samsung-published laboratory protocol or a measured performance claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose a reference: select one speech clip, one music passage and, if relevant, one movie or game segment. Keep the files and apps unchanged.
  2. Fix the conditions: use the same Fold position, output device and volume. Disable any app-specific volume changes that would make one trial louder.
  3. Start neutral: note the current Dolby Atmos, Equalizer, Adapt sound, balance and mono states.
  4. Change one item: test Adapt sound first, then the content-appropriate Dolby Atmos mode, then Equalizer. Do not change balance or mono unless you have a one-sided listening need.
  5. Score what matters: write down speech intelligibility, tonal balance, stereo width, distortion or harshness and whether the setting behaves differently for calls and media.
  6. Repeat the winner: switch back to the neutral state and then to your preferred setting to verify that the difference is repeatable rather than caused by a volume mismatch.
  7. Save a practical profile: keep the combination that helps your normal listening, not the one that sounds most dramatic for a single demo.

Starting points for common listening situations

Situation Suggested order What to watch for
Calls are hard to understand Adapt sound; then compare neutral audio with any voice-oriented Dolby Atmos mode Voices should become easier to follow without artificial echo, sharpness or excessive volume
Dialogue in films is buried Adapt sound, then a movie or voice Dolby Atmos option; use Equalizer only for a specific tonal problem Check the same dialogue scene at the same volume; a wider soundtrack can mask speech
Music sounds muddy Compare Dolby Atmos music mode with off, then make small Equalizer changes Do not remove so much low end that the recording becomes thin; check several songs
One earbud is being used Mono audio; set balance only if the single-ear setup still favors one side Mono removes stereo separation but preserves both channels in one ear
An app plays through the wrong device Separate app sound Confirm the selected device differs from the main output; this is routing, not audio enhancement
Wired headphones are connected Adapt sound setup if offered, then compare UHQ upscaling on and off Some setup steps require headphones; verify USB-C compatibility

Troubleshoot when a setting is missing or ineffective

The menu path does not match

Search Settings for the feature name first. If it still does not appear, consult the manual for your exact Fold generation and software. Samsung’s Fold6 path and its general Galaxy path differ, so copying a path from another model can lead to a dead end.

The change sounds like it did nothing

  • Confirm that the setting is enabled rather than merely opened.
  • Use a clip where the effect should be noticeable and replay it at the same volume.
  • Check whether the active app or connected device has its own equalizer or sound mode.
  • Test the Fold speakers and your usual headphones separately; an effect can behave differently across outputs.

The result is harsher or less clear

Return Dolby Atmos and Equalizer to neutral, center balance and turn off mono unless you need it. Re-enable one option at a time. If the problem remains on every output, inspect the source recording and the phone’s volume level before assuming a setting is defective.

A setup prompt will not continue

Connect the headphones requested by the phone, confirm that the Fold recognizes them and restart the Adapt sound process. If the prompt still fails, use the available profile without the optional test and check the model’s manual for supported accessories.

Accessibility-first listening choices

For accessibility use, prioritize comfortable audibility and dependable speech understanding over spatial effects or genre presets. Adapt sound, balance and mono address different needs: Adapt sound personalizes the response, balance corrects channel level and mono combines channels. Use only the controls that solve the problem you actually have, and reassess the result whenever you change output devices or software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

For most listeners, the clearest path is to complete Adapt sound first, then compare Dolby Atmos and Equalizer with the exact content and output device you use. Use balance or mono for one-sided listening, Separate app sound when the destination is wrong, and UHQ only as an optional wired-headphone comparison. Because Samsung documents functions rather than a universal winning preset, your repeatable, comfortable listening result is the deciding test.
