That order follows Games Workshop’s 2026 direction for Fyreslayers: a more elite force built around Hearthguard, Flameseekers, Magmadroths and supporting characters. Buy Vulkite Berzerkers only for Legends, narrative games or events that specifically allow them, because the 2026 update moves them to Legends despite their entries still appearing in the April Battle Profiles.
What changed for Fyreslayers in 2026?
Battletome: Khazalite Holds changes the sensible starting point for a new collection. Four infantry heroes, the Magmic Invocations and the Magmic Battleforge leave the current army, while Vulkite Berzerkers move to Legends. Games Workshop describes the result as a pivot toward a more elite force, with Hearthguard and Vulkyn Flameseekers providing the infantry and Magmadroths and characters supplying the heavy presence.

This matters when you are deciding which box to buy first. Older recommendations often begin with large units of Vulkite Berzerkers because they were the familiar core of Fyreslayers armies. That advice is no longer a safe assumption for current matched play. A new collection should instead establish a legal infantry core, then choose whether its identity is a bodyguard-heavy lodge, a Flameseeker-led force or a monster-focused Magmadroth army.

John, speaking for the Warhammer studio, says the new edition preserves the army’s central playstyle: “doughty duardin who hurl themselves across the battlefield, blazing with power and drinking deep of their god’s divinity at the right moment to carry them to a confident victory.” The practical expression of that idea is a compact elite force that protects key heroes while its hard-hitting units cross the table.

The best buying order for a new army
- Hearthguard Berzerkers: your first durable elite infantry purchase.
- Vulkyn Flameseekers: the current infantry foundation and a key part of the post-Vulkite direction.
- A Magmadroth-mounted hero: the centerpiece that determines whether your collection leans toward command, support or monster hunting.
- Auric Hearthguard: a second-wave specialist once the main infantry core is established.
- Battletome: Khazalite Holds: the current rules reference, bought in the language and edition you will actually use.
This is a buying sequence rather than a mandatory army list. Points, warscrolls and event packs can change, so check the latest official Battle Profiles before placing an order or submitting a roster.
1. Hearthguard Berzerkers: the safest first unit
Why they lead the list
Games Workshop calls Hearthguard Berzerkers the elite bodyguard of a magmahold’s royal family. Their defining rule, Duty Unto Death, grants a 5+ ward to the Berzerkers and their ward. That protection makes them the clearest first infantry purchase for a player who wants a resilient force organized around an important hero.
A ward is especially valuable on a small elite army: every surviving model represents a meaningful part of your combat power, and a bodyguard unit can keep an army’s command piece functioning for longer. The rule also gives the unit a clear job before you have learned every interaction in the battletome: keep the protected hero safe, occupy important ground and force an opponent to commit enough damage to remove them.

The April 2026 official Battle Profiles list both Hearthguard Berzerker weapon variants at 110 points for five models:
| Unit | Weapon option | Points | Profile context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hearthguard Berzerkers | Berzerker Broadaxes | 110 for five | General’s Handbook 2025–26 battlepack, April 2026 Battle Profiles |
| Hearthguard Berzerkers | Flamestrike Poleaxes | 110 for five | General’s Handbook 2025–26 battlepack, April 2026 Battle Profiles |
Because both listed options have the same points value, choose the weapon configuration according to the warscroll, your preferred battlefield role and the models you want to build rather than trying to save points. Confirm the current warscroll wording before assembly; the Battle Profile gives the matched-play cost, not a complete explanation of each weapon’s rules.
Who should buy them first?
- Players who want a dependable hero-and-bodyguard core.
- New collectors who prefer a compact elite force over a large model count.
- Anyone planning to add a Magmadroth hero and needing infantry that fits the army’s protective theme.
2. Vulkyn Flameseekers: the current infantry foundation
Why they are the second purchase
Vulkyn Flameseekers are explicitly part of the 2026 infantry direction. They give a new army a unit that is not tied to the Legends change affecting Vulkite Berzerkers, while keeping the aggressive, flame-driven identity associated with Fyreslayers.

The April 2026 profiles set Flameseekers at 160 points for nine models. That unit size makes them a substantial infantry investment after the smaller five-model Hearthguard entry. Buying them second creates a broader core without abandoning the elite emphasis introduced by Khazalite Holds.
Battleline and the Lofnir route
Games Workshop’s Lofnir material presents Vulkyn Flameseekers as Battleline in that Magmadroth-focused formation. If you already know that you want a monster-led collection, Flameseekers can therefore do more than fill space in the battleline: they connect the infantry purchase to the formation’s theme.
Do not assume that a Battleline designation in Lofnir automatically applies to every Fyreslayers army or every future edition. Formation rules are edition-sensitive. Use the current rules publication and the event’s roster requirements when deciding how many units you need.
When to buy them before Hearthguard
Hearthguard remain the better default first purchase because of their bodyguard rule. Flameseekers can move ahead of them if your priority is establishing the army’s current infantry identity immediately, or if your planned force is centered on Lofnir and Magmadroths. That is a theme-first choice, not evidence that Flameseekers are universally more efficient.
3. Magmadroth-mounted heroes: choose the centerpiece deliberately
The three current options
The April 2026 profiles include three Magmadroth-mounted heroes:
| Hero | Points | Collection emphasis |
|---|---|---|
| Auric Runefather on Magmadroth | 330 | Commanding lodge leader and army centerpiece |
| Auric Runesmiter on Magmadroth | 300 | Support-oriented centerpiece choice |
| Auric Runeson on Magmadroth | 250 | Monster-hunter emphasis |
The final column describes the broad emphasis associated with the variants in the current material; use the latest warscroll and the kit’s build options for the exact rules and equipment available to each model.

Why the Runefather is the default centerpiece
Games Workshop describes the Auric Runefather on Magmadroth as a lodge leader. Once per battle, his inspiration grants an extra attack to Fyreslayers wholly within 12 inches. That ability gives a new collection a straightforward plan: keep the main force close enough to benefit from the leader, then use the Magmadroth’s presence to pressure the opponent while the infantry advances.
At 330 points in the April 2026 profiles, the Runefather is the most expensive of the three listed Magmadroth heroes. That cost is justified only if you want the command effect and the model to define your army. A centerpiece should not be an automatic purchase simply because it is the largest kit; it should match how you intend to play.
When the Runesmiter or Runeson makes more sense
The Auric Runesmiter on Magmadroth costs 300 points and suits a collection that values support from its mounted hero. The Auric Runeson on Magmadroth costs 250 points and is the lower-cost route for a monster-hunter emphasis. Select between them after checking the current warscrolls and the kit’s assembly choices, especially if your local events use restrictions on named variants or battle formations.

4. Auric Hearthguard: add a second infantry role
Auric Hearthguard cost 110 points for five in the April 2026 profiles. They are best treated as a second-wave purchase: add them after Hearthguard Berzerkers and Flameseekers have established the army’s main infantry core.
The current material identifies Auric Hearthguard as a distinct infantry option but does not define a single universal battlefield niche that applies independently of the latest warscroll and event packet. Before buying several units, read the current rules to confirm how their weapons, abilities and unit size fit your planned list. Their value is in giving the collection another tool rather than simply adding more of the same bodyguard unit.
- Buy them when your core already has a durable bodyguard and a current infantry foundation.
- Use them to broaden the army’s roles instead of replacing the first Hearthguard purchase.
- Recheck the warscroll before committing to a large number of units, because their detailed battlefield job is rules-version dependent.
5. Battletome: Khazalite Holds is a priority purchase
The battletome is not a unit, but it is part of a sensible buying order because the 2026 update is framed around it. Buy the current edition rather than an older Fyreslayers book, and confirm the language and region when using a marketplace listing.

The book matters before you expand beyond a few units. It determines the army rules, warscroll wording, battle traits and any formation interactions that tell you whether a proposed purchase supports your plan. A model that looks attractive in isolation can become a poor investment if its rules have moved to Legends or if your chosen event uses a different legal roster.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are Vulkite Berzerkers still legal?
Games Workshop’s 2026 update says, “Vulkite Berzerkers are also moving to Legends.” That means you should not treat them as a safe first purchase for current matched play without checking the event’s legal roster.
The apparent contradiction is caused by the April 2026 Battle Profiles still printing Vulkite entries: Bladed Slingshields cost 140 points for ten, while Fyresteel Weapons cost 120 points for ten. A printed profile does not by itself guarantee that a unit is legal in every matched-play setting. The army update’s Legends designation takes priority for planning purposes unless the event rules explicitly allow Legends.

Choosing between Hearthguard and Flameseekers
| Question | Choose Hearthguard Berzerkers when… | Choose Vulkyn Flameseekers when… |
|---|---|---|
| Primary need | You want a durable elite bodyguard around a hero. | You want the current infantry foundation emphasized by Khazalite Holds. |
| Known rule hook | Duty Unto Death grants a 5+ ward to the Berzerkers and their ward. | They are presented as Battleline in the Lofnir Magmadroth-focused formation. |
| Current profile cost | 110 points for five, either listed weapon option. | 160 points for nine. |
| Best collection stage | First infantry purchase. | Second purchase, or first for a Lofnir-first plan. |
This is a decision framework, not a claim that one unit wins every matchup. The right choice depends on whether your first games need protection for a hero or a larger current infantry block.
Building a Magmadroth-focused collection with Lofnir
The Lofnir Army of Renown is the clearest thematic route for players who want Fyreslayers to revolve around powerful Magmadroths. Games Workshop describes it as pairing Fyreslayers with Magmadroths, making Vulkyn Flameseekers Battleline and allowing one Auric Runeson on Magmadroth as Battleline for every Vulkyn Flameseekers unit.
That structure gives you a concrete progression: begin with Flameseekers, add the Magmadroth hero that matches your preferred emphasis, then expand the monster-led elements as your collection and points allowance grow. The Runeson provision is particularly relevant if you want multiple mounted threats without treating every hero choice as an ordinary support character.
Lofnir rules are edition-sensitive. Read the current Army of Renown publication and the event’s army-construction rules before assuming a unit is Battleline or that a formation can be used in a particular battlepack.
How to plan purchases by army identity
Bodyguard-led elite force
Begin with Hearthguard Berzerkers, select a Magmadroth-mounted hero, and add Flameseekers to broaden the infantry. This route puts Duty Unto Death at the center of the collection and keeps the army’s visual identity focused on protecting a lodge leader.
Infantry-first current roster
Start with Hearthguard Berzerkers and Vulkyn Flameseekers before committing to a monster. This approach lets you learn the army’s infantry interactions and keeps the first purchases aligned with the 2026 update without requiring a large centerpiece model immediately.
Monster-led Lofnir force
Prioritize Vulkyn Flameseekers and then choose a Magmadroth hero. Check the Lofnir requirements before buying duplicates, because Battleline status and formation permissions depend on the current rules publication.
Existing collection with Vulkites
Do not discard the models. Mark them for Legends, narrative or event-specific games, then add current units for matched play. Hearthguard Berzerkers provide the most direct replacement for a durable core, while Flameseekers move the collection toward the current infantry plan.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Confirm that the event uses the General’s Handbook 2025–26 battlepack or identify the points document it requires.
- Check the latest Battle Profiles on the date you finalize your list; the April 2026 costs can change.
- Verify whether the event permits Legends units before treating Vulkite Berzerkers as legal.
- Read the current Hearthguard, Flameseeker and Magmadroth warscrolls rather than relying on older reviews.
- Decide whether your centerpiece is the Runefather’s command effect, the Runesmiter’s support emphasis or the Runeson’s monster-hunter route.
- Confirm the kit’s build options before assembly, particularly when choosing among mounted hero variants.
- Buy the current Battletome: Khazalite Holds edition in the language and region you need.
- If choosing Lofnir, verify its Army of Renown requirements in the current rules publication.
Bottom line for a first purchase
For most new players, buy Hearthguard Berzerkers first, add Vulkyn Flameseekers next and then choose a Magmadroth-mounted hero. Add Auric Hearthguard once you need another infantry role, and treat Vulkite Berzerkers as Legends or narrative models unless your event explicitly allows them. That sequence matches the 2026 Fyreslayers direction while leaving room to specialize into a protected elite lodge or a Magmadroth-heavy Lofnir army.
