Best Frosthaven Graphics Settings for Smooth Performance and Readable Text (PC, 1.0)

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the clearest Frosthaven experience, keep your monitor’s native resolution, use the largest comfortable UI/text scale, and start with the default or High preset. If frame pacing is uneven, lower shadows first, then ambient occlusion, effects, and post-processing. Keep an upscaler at Quality before trying Balanced, and cap the frame rate at a level your system can hold consistently.

That order protects card text, tooltips, and menus instead of trading legibility for a higher but unstable FPS counter. Frosthaven’s full PC 1.0 launch was announced for October 15, 2026, and the release notes describe optimization work intended to make the game run smoother. The developers have not published a Frosthaven-specific benchmark, per-setting FPS gains, or a GPU-tier table, so the reliable method is controlled, in-game testing rather than a universal preset.

A reliable starting profile

Use this as your first pass after installing or updating the 1.0 PC build. It is a visual-quality priority profile, not a claim about a particular graphics card.

  1. Set the game to your display’s native output resolution.
  2. Choose the largest UI or text scale that feels comfortable without hiding information.
  3. Start with the default or High graphics preset.
  4. Play a real scenario, inspect several cards and tooltips, and open the outpost interface before changing anything.
  5. If frame pacing is poor, reduce shadows.
  6. If that is not enough, reduce ambient occlusion, then effects, then post-processing, testing after each change.
  7. If an upscaler or render-scale control is available, select Quality first. Try Balanced only when Quality cannot sustain your target frame rate.
  8. Apply a frame-rate cap that your computer can maintain continuously: 60 FPS on a 60 Hz display, or a lower stable value when 60 is not realistic.

Change one control at a time and keep notes. This prevents a preset switch from hiding which adjustment solved the problem and makes it easy to return to the last readable configuration.

Why Frosthaven needs a readability-first approach

Frosthaven is a turn-based tactical RPG built around card selection, board positioning, and cooperative decisions. A few extra frames are less useful if a softened card description forces you to zoom, pause, or misread an ability. The best setting is therefore the one that keeps text and icons legible while delivering even frame times during movement, combat effects, and interface transitions.

Average FPS alone can mislead. A configuration that reports a high average but produces short stalls feels worse than a lower, steady cap. Evaluate four things together:

  • Text and UI sharpness: Can you read card names, action text, tooltips, and outpost labels at your normal viewing distance?
  • Frame-time stability: Does camera movement and card inspection remain consistent, without recurring hitching?
  • GPU load: Is the graphics processor spending most of its time rendering detail that you do not notice in a turn-based view?
  • Where the setting acts: Does it change the board, animated effects, menus, or all three?

Resolution and UI scale

Keep native output resolution whenever possible

Native resolution gives card lettering and interface edges the display’s full pixel grid. Lowering the game’s output resolution is a blunt performance control: it reduces the work for the GPU, but it also makes every menu and board element pass through a scaling step. Because Frosthaven presents information in small cards and tooltips, keep native output resolution while you test less disruptive options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the operating system or monitor’s actual panel resolution, not a marketing label such as “4K-ready” when the panel is running at another mode. If the game offers separate window, borderless, and exclusive-fullscreen choices, select the mode that behaves reliably on your system; the resolution rule remains the same.

Increase UI or text scale before changing resolution

If text is physically too small, enlarge the in-game UI or text scale first. The largest comfortable value is preferable to lowering resolution and then trying to compensate with blurry interpolation. Check the complete interface after scaling: card text, tooltips, character panels, combat logs, and the outpost screen should all remain usable without important buttons moving off-screen.

When a lower output resolution is justified

Use a lower output resolution only when you have already reduced the targeted quality controls and still cannot reach a stable frame-rate cap. Select an aspect ratio that matches the display, verify that the image is not being stretched, and re-check every card at normal zoom. If text becomes visibly soft, return to native output and accept a lower cap or a simpler quality profile instead.

Preset strategy and individual controls

A preset is a useful starting point, not a final answer. Start at Default or High, observe the game in a populated scenario, and then make targeted reductions. The table shows the practical order and the trade-off each control represents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Control First choice Effect on text and UI Typical performance role Where you will notice it
Overall preset Default or High Usually preserves the intended presentation; changing the preset may alter several controls at once. Can make a large change, but hides which individual option caused it. Board, effects, lighting, and sometimes menus.
Shadows Lower before touching resolution Card and menu lettering is normally unchanged. Often a sensible first reduction when the GPU is busy; the exact gain depends on the scene. Character, prop, and board shadows.
Ambient occlusion Reduce one step if needed Text remains at the same sampling resolution, although the board may look less grounded. Can reduce lighting-related GPU work and improve frame pacing in busy scenes. Contact shading around figures, walls, and objects.
Effects Reduce after shadows and ambient occlusion Static card text should remain sharp; animated ability visuals may become simpler. Useful when spell, attack, or environmental effects cause spikes. Combat animations, particles, flashes, and area indicators.
Post-processing Reduce after effects Some filters can change perceived crispness, contrast, or edge clarity; inspect cards after changing it. May help when screen-space filters or finishing effects are expensive. Whole-screen image treatment, bloom-like effects, and transitions.
Upscaler or render scale, if present Quality Usually retains more fine detail than Balanced; small type must be checked at every mode. Reduces internal rendering work while keeping the selected output resolution. Board and animated scenes; menus may or may not be scaled the same way.

The table describes a tuning order, not measured Frosthaven gains. Official materials do not provide per-setting FPS deltas, so treat each change as a test rather than a guaranteed percentage improvement.

Upscaling and render scale without blurry cards

An upscaler renders the scene internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs it for the display output. A render-scale slider does a similar quality-versus-load trade-off directly. Both can improve GPU headroom without changing the monitor’s output mode, but reconstructed pixels are most visible in small lettering, thin icon outlines, and diagonal card borders.

Use Quality before Balanced

Select Quality as the first upscaling mode. Enter a scenario, open a card inspection view, read a tooltip, and visit the outpost interface. Look for shimmer on text, halos around icons, or lettering that appears softer when the camera moves. If those defects are distracting, keep Quality and lower shadows or effects instead.

Balanced is a second-stage option for a system that cannot hold its cap at native resolution with Quality enabled. After selecting it, repeat the same card and menu checks. If the board becomes acceptable but interface text does not, the mode is a poor trade for Frosthaven even if the FPS counter improves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not stack several blur-producing changes at once

Aggressive render scaling combined with a lower output resolution makes it difficult to identify the source of softness. Change one control, inspect a fixed card, and only then test the next control. Keep screenshots or a short written note of the mode that remains readable so you can reverse a change quickly.

Choose a stable frame-rate target

Match the cap to a result your computer can sustain during the hardest scene you actually play. A 60 FPS cap is appropriate for a 60 Hz display when the system can hold it; otherwise choose a lower cap that does not fluctuate. The purpose of the cap is consistent frame delivery, not a particular number on the counter.

Why an uncapped result can feel worse

With no cap, the GPU may run at full utilization in a quiet board view, leaving less reserve for a sudden effect burst or interface transition. The counter can look impressive while frame times vary. A cap creates headroom and makes it easier to detect whether a graphics change solved the real problem.

How to pick the cap

  1. Start with the display’s refresh-aligned target, such as 60 FPS for a 60 Hz panel.
  2. Play a demanding encounter rather than an empty menu and observe the least stable moments.
  3. If the target is missed repeatedly, lower one setting or choose the next lower cap.
  4. Keep the first value that remains steady through board movement, effect-heavy turns, card inspection, and the outpost screen.

Do not infer a universal target from another player’s hardware. Frosthaven’s official notes say optimization work was made to help the game run smoother, but they do not establish a frame-rate guarantee for a particular CPU, GPU, resolution, or display.

A step-by-step tuning procedure

Step 1: Establish a readable reference

Load a saved scenario and record the current preset, output resolution, UI scale, upscaling mode, and frame-rate cap. Inspect a card with several lines of text, a tooltip with numbers, and the outpost interface. This reference tells you whether a later change affected clarity.

  • Players will delve into twenty new scenarios that take place after the events of the original Gloomhaven campaign. These new adventures will involve one new character class—the Aesther Diviner—and her attempts to prevent an approaching calamity. • Expansion also features seven new monster types (including three new bosses) and fourteen new items.
  • 1-4 players, Ages: 12+ 60–120 play time

Step 2: Test the difficult view

Move the camera across the board, select characters, open and close cards, and trigger a turn with visible effects. Include a short outpost visit. Menus alone are not enough: a setting can be inexpensive in the interface and costly during a busy combat effect.

Step 3: Confirm the symptom

Decide whether the problem is low average performance, inconsistent frame times, or image softness. Stutters call for a cap or targeted quality reduction; consistently low GPU-limited performance calls for lower rendering work; blurry text calls for restoring resolution, UI scale, or upscaling quality.

Step 4: Lower one control

Use the order shadows, ambient occlusion, effects, then post-processing. Apply the change, return to the same board area, and inspect the same card. If the frame-time problem is gone, stop rather than reducing another option for no benefit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: Test upscaling only if necessary

Choose Quality, repeat the fixed card and tooltip checks, and compare movement clarity. Select Balanced only when Quality cannot meet the chosen cap. Reject any mode that makes important text hard to read, regardless of the FPS increase.

Step 6: Set and verify the cap

Cap the game at the sustainable value and play a complete encounter. A setting is successful only when it remains readable and steady after several minutes, not merely during the first camera sweep.

Scenario test matrix

Use the same checks after every adjustment so your comparisons are meaningful.

Test What to do Pass condition If it fails
Card inspection Open a multi-line ability card at normal zoom. Letters and symbols are crisp without shimmer or reconstruction halos. Restore the previous upscaler mode, render scale, or output resolution.
Tooltip and combat log Hover an item or ability and read numerical details. Small type stays legible while the camera is still and moving. Increase UI scale or undo the change that softened fine text.
Board traversal Pan across the largest or most populated area. Camera motion is even, with no recurring hitch at the chosen cap. Lower shadows, then ambient occlusion, and retest.
Effect-heavy turn Observe a turn with several animations or particles. Frame delivery remains steady during the peak visual activity. Reduce effects, then post-processing if needed.
Outpost interface Open panels, lists, and descriptions. Menus remain as readable as the board. Prefer native output and Quality upscaling; adjust UI scale.

Three practical profiles

Readability-first

Keep native output resolution, use the largest comfortable UI scale, and retain Default or High quality. Use Quality upscaling only if needed, then cap at a level that never wavers. Lower shadows before considering any change that affects internal resolution. This profile suits players who spend more time reading cards and menus than watching effects.

Balanced

Keep native output and a comfortable UI scale. Start at High, reduce shadows and ambient occlusion one step, and use Quality upscaling when the cap is missed. Reduce effects only if combat scenes still produce spikes. This is the usual compromise when you want board detail and dependable motion.

Performance-first

Keep the output resolution and UI scale long enough to protect text, then lower shadows, ambient occlusion, effects, and post-processing in that order. Move from Quality to Balanced upscaling only after those targeted reductions fail. Select a modest cap that the computer can sustain instead of allowing large swings. Recheck every card after each internal-resolution change; performance is not a success if the game becomes difficult to read.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Text is blurry but movement is smooth

Check output resolution first, then the upscaler or render-scale mode. Return to native output and Quality upscaling, and verify that the UI scale has not been reduced. Do not lower shadows or effects to solve a text-sampling problem; those controls generally leave static lettering alone.

FPS is acceptable in menus but drops during combat

Test the effect-heavy turn described above. Reduce effects first, then post-processing, and keep a stable cap. If the drop occurs around shadows or busy board lighting, reduce shadows and ambient occlusion before changing resolution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The counter is high but the game feels uneven

Apply a cap and retest the busiest scenario. An uncapped GPU can produce variable frame times even when its average is high. Keep the lowest cap that remains steady and leaves enough rendering headroom for effects.

Menus are readable but the board looks soft

Inspect whether the upscaler or render scale affects only the 3D board while leaving interface elements untouched. If it does, keep native output and Quality mode, then recover performance through shadows, ambient occlusion, effects, or post-processing. If the softness persists, revert the internal-resolution change.

Changing the preset fixed performance but damaged clarity

Return to the previous preset and reproduce the result with individual controls. A preset can lower several options simultaneously, including one that affects image reconstruction. Target the expensive setting instead of accepting an across-the-board reduction.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Lowering output resolution first: this sacrifices every piece of text before you know whether shadows or effects were the actual bottleneck.
  • Judging from an empty menu: combat effects and a populated board are more revealing.
  • Changing multiple options together: you lose the ability to identify the useful adjustment.
  • Optimizing average FPS only: uneven frame times are visible during camera movement and effect bursts.
  • Leaving UI scale at a small default: increasing it can solve a readability problem without any GPU cost, provided the layout still fits.
  • Assuming another player’s numbers apply: resolution, display refresh, hardware, and scenario complexity all change the result.
  • Keeping a blurry upscaler because the counter rose: card-heavy play makes clarity a core performance requirement.

What the official release information establishes

The official product description calls Frosthaven “a turn-based tactical RPG” with deep mechanics based on the Frosthaven board-game rules. The 1.0 PC launch was announced for October 15, 2026. Steam’s official 1.0 notes say, “We made a number of optimizations that help the game run smoother.” Those statements establish the release context and the intent of the optimization work, not a guaranteed FPS result.
