Best Free Windows Alarm and Focus Apps for Building a Daily Routine (2026 Guide)

Windows Clock is the best first choice for most people. It combines scheduled alarms, one-off timers and Focus sessions in a free app already included with Windows. It can continue to operate when its window is closed or the device is locked, but the computer must be awake when the notification is due. If you need adjustable Pomodoro sequences, Pomro is a focused alternative. PowerToys Awake is useful only as a supporting keep-awake utility; it is not an alarm or focus timer and cannot keep a PC awake at the lock screen.

This guide separates those jobs, gives setup steps, and explains the power, account and operating-system limits that determine whether a routine works in practice.

Quick recommendations

App Best for What it provides Important limitation
Windows Clock One built-in routine hub Alarms, timers and Focus sessions; optional task and audio integrations Notifications require the computer to be awake; some integrations need accounts and may vary by region
Pomro Custom Pomodoro cycles Preset and user-created focus/break sequences, activities, compact always-on-top timer Features and Microsoft Store availability are publisher claims that should be checked at installation
PowerToys Awake Preventing sleep during a task Keep-awake modes for an interval, indefinitely, or until an expiration time Does not work at the lock screen and does not create alarms or focus sessions

Choose by the task rather than by the word “timer.” An alarm is a scheduled notification, a timer counts down from a duration, and a focus session reserves a bounded work block while suppressing selected interruptions.

What kind of routine do you need?

Scheduled alarms

Use an alarm for an event tied to a clock time: getting up, starting a class, taking a break at a fixed hour, or ending a workday. An alarm can repeat according to the options offered in Clock. It is not a substitute for a timer when the start time changes each day.

  • Digital alarm clock with a 0.7-inch green LED display for easily checking the time at a glance
  • Built-in nightlight gently illuminates a dark room
  • Repeating snooze function makes it possible to sleep a little longer
  • AC powered with integrated power supply. Batteries may be used as a backup power source to ensure time and alarms are retained in memory for 8 hours (refer to User Manual for details)
  • Measures 4.5 x 3.5 x 2.4 inches (LxWxH); weighs 0.4 pounds (6.6 oz) Note: Batteries are not included

One-off or repeatable timers

A timer measures a duration, such as 20 minutes for email or 45 minutes for exercise. It is useful when you begin whenever you are ready and want an audible or visual endpoint. Clock lets you select a preset timer or create one.

Focus sessions

A Focus session is a bounded work period with optional breaks. Clock displays the session timer, can enable Do Not Disturb automatically, and can hide taskbar app badges and flashing. It is designed to reduce interruptions during the block; the documented features do not establish that it improves productivity for every person.

Windows Clock: the best starting point

Microsoft documents Clock alarms and timers for Windows 11 and Windows 10. The app is the practical first stop when you want all three routine tools without installing a separate product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set an alarm

  1. Open Clock from the Start menu.
  2. Open the Alarm section.
  3. Choose an existing preset or create a new alarm.
  4. Set the time and the repeat or sound options presented by your Windows build, then save it.

Clock can run alarms while the app window is closed or the device is locked. That does not mean it can alert while the computer is asleep. If the machine enters sleep before the alarm, Windows may not deliver the notification at the intended time.

Create a timer

  1. In Clock, open Timer.
  2. Select a preset or choose the control to create a timer.
  3. Enter the duration, give it a recognizable name if your build offers that field, and start it.
  4. Leave the PC awake, with notification access and sufficient volume, until the timer ends.

Start a Focus session

  1. Open the Focus sessions area in Clock.
  2. Choose the session length and decide whether to include breaks.
  3. Optionally enable the setting that shows the timer in Clock.
  4. Choose whether to hide taskbar badges and flashing, and enable or disable automatic Do Not Disturb.
  5. Start the session. The timer remains visible, while the selected interruption controls apply for its duration.

Focus settings are separate from an alarm schedule. Use an alarm to tell you when to begin and a Focus session to control the work period itself.

Optional task and audio connections

Clock can connect to Microsoft To Do so you can select a task before beginning a session. It can also connect to Spotify for music, playlists or podcasts. Spotify requires its own account. Microsoft notes that syncing requires a Microsoft account and that feature availability can vary by region. These connections are optional; the basic session timer does not require them.

Make Windows Clock deliver alerts reliably

Microsoft’s instructions include a warning that alarms and timers show notifications only while the computer is awake. Treat “app closed” and “device locked” as different from “asleep.” Before depending on an alert, check the following:

  • Sleep settings: If Clock warns that notifications appear only while the device is awake, adjust the Windows power and sleep settings so the PC remains awake through the event.
  • Power: Keep a laptop plugged in for an overnight or long session. Battery-saving behavior can otherwise put it to sleep.
  • Volume: Set the system volume high enough to hear the selected sound, and verify that mute or a disconnected audio device is not masking it.
  • Notification controls: Confirm that Windows notifications and the relevant Clock notifications are enabled. Do Not Disturb is useful during work, but check its schedule if you expect an alert during a quiet period.
  • Locking: Locking the screen is not the same as sleep. Clock is documented to work when the device is locked, provided the session remains awake and notifications are allowed.

Run a short test timer before using an alarm for an important appointment. That test checks your actual sleep, volume and notification configuration rather than assuming the defaults are correct.

Pomro: for adjustable Pomodoro routines

Pomro’s publisher describes it as a free Pomodoro focus timer for Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is a conditional recommendation for people who want a repeatable focus-and-break sequence with more control than a single countdown.

Published presets

Preset Focus period Short break Long break
Balanced 25 minutes 5 minutes Publisher describes short and long breaks; the exact long-break duration is not stated
Deep work 50 minutes 10 minutes Publisher describes short and long breaks; the exact long-break duration is not stated
Sprint 15 minutes 3 minutes Publisher describes short and long breaks; the exact long-break duration is not stated

You can create and save your own sequences instead of using those presets. Pomro also lets you associate sessions with activities and provides a compact timer that stays above other work, according to the publisher.

  • BEDROOM CLOCK WITH DIMABLE LED DISPLAY: The compact digital clock (6.2" x 3" x 2.8") has a 48mm blue bold font for easy time viewing from a distance. Data and connectivity claims

The publisher says Pomro works offline without an account, stores settings, activities and focus history locally, and has no ads. Those are product claims rather than results from an independent installation or privacy audit. Confirm the current Microsoft Store listing, Windows requirements and permissions when you install, because listings and capabilities can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Pomro is the better fit

  • You want a saved sequence that alternates focus and breaks automatically.
  • You use different cycle lengths for different activities and do not want to rebuild them each time.
  • You prefer a small timer window that remains visible over your work.
  • You need an offline workflow and are comfortable relying on the publisher’s local-storage description.

Pomro does not replace Clock’s scheduled-alarm role. You can use Clock for a fixed start time and Pomro for the work cycle, but that creates two separate configurations to maintain.

PowerToys Awake: a power-state helper, not an alarm

PowerToys Awake keeps a computer awake indefinitely, for a chosen interval, or until a selected expiration time. It is relevant when a long-running task must continue without sleep or when you need the desktop available for a timer. It does not schedule an alert, create a focus cycle or suppress notifications.

Display and lock-screen behavior

Awake can allow the display to turn off by default. A separate option keeps the display on. The utility runs in the user session and does not work while the lock screen is displayed. Therefore, it cannot guarantee that an alarm notification will appear while the PC is locked. Microsoft directs users who need a computer to remain awake at the lock screen to configure the Windows power plan instead.

Supported systems and installation routes

Microsoft’s developer documentation states that PowerToys runs on Windows 11 and Windows 10 version 2004 or later on x64 and Arm64 PCs. Installation options include the Microsoft Store, WinGet and GitHub. A Microsoft page updated in 2026 describes PowerToys as containing “30+ tools” and says the number is rounded down; that breadth says nothing about alarm quality or routine effectiveness.

Use Awake safely with a routine

  1. Install PowerToys from one of Microsoft’s documented channels.
  2. Open Awake and choose Keep awake indefinitely, a duration, or an expiration time.
  3. Decide separately whether the display should remain on.
  4. Keep the user session unlocked if you need a notification to arrive through Awake.
  5. Return to your normal power plan or turn Awake off when the task ends, especially on a laptop.

Do not turn on indefinite mode as a blanket solution for overnight alarms. It can prevent expected sleep and consume more battery or energy; use the shortest interval that covers the task.

Build a daily routine with the right combination

Fixed start and end times

  1. Use Clock alarms for the start and end of the recurring block.
  2. At the start alarm, launch a Clock Focus session with the desired duration and break setting.
  3. Enable Do Not Disturb and taskbar badge or flashing controls if interruptions are a problem.
  4. Use a separate Clock timer when a subtask has a shorter, independent deadline.

Flexible start, repeated work cycles

  1. Open Pomro when you are ready to work.
  2. Choose Balanced, Deep work or Sprint, or select a saved custom sequence.
  3. Link the session to an activity if you want the publisher-described local history to distinguish tasks.
  4. Keep the timer visible and take the breaks the sequence specifies.

Long-running task that must not sleep

  1. Start the task and any Clock timer or Focus session.
  2. Set Awake for the task’s expected duration, adding a small margin rather than selecting indefinite mode by default.
  3. Do not lock the PC if you require a notification, because Awake cannot operate at the lock screen.
  4. Restore your ordinary sleep behavior after the task.

Troubleshooting branches

The alarm did not sound

  • Check whether the PC was asleep at the scheduled time. If it was, change the sleep schedule or use a device that remains awake for critical alerts.
  • Check volume, mute state and the active output device.
  • Check Windows notification permissions and any Do Not Disturb schedule.
  • Run a two-minute test timer while watching the power state before relying on the setup.

The focus session is too distracting

  • Enable automatic Do Not Disturb.
  • Hide taskbar badges and flashing in Focus settings.
  • Disconnect optional task or audio integrations if they add prompts you do not need.

The PC sleeps despite Awake

  • Confirm Awake is running in the same user session as the task.
  • Check whether the lock screen appeared; Awake does not work there.
  • If the machine must stay awake while locked, configure the Windows power plan as Microsoft recommends instead of relying on Awake.

Pomro is unavailable or different from the description

Check the current Microsoft Store listing and the publisher’s current requirements. Store availability, supported Windows versions and feature details can change, and the published claims have not been independently verified here.

Windows version and support context

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Under standard support, Windows 10 no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes. Clock documentation still describes alarms and timers for Windows 10, and Pomro’s publisher describes support for Windows 10 and 11, but feature compatibility is not the same as security support. For a new routine setup, use a currently supported Windows version whenever your hardware and organization allow it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PowerToys’ documented minimum for Windows 10 is version 2004 or later, on x64 or Arm64 hardware. Check your exact edition and architecture before installing it.

Which app should you choose?

  • Choose Windows Clock if you want the fewest moving parts, scheduled alarms, ordinary countdowns and a built-in focus mode.
  • Add Pomro if your main requirement is customizable Pomodoro sequences, saved activities and an always-visible compact timer.
  • Add PowerToys Awake only when needed to prevent sleep during a defined task. It is not a replacement for either timing app and cannot solve lock-screen delivery.

For most routines, start with Clock, test the alert while the PC is awake, and add another utility only for a specific gap. This keeps the schedule, notification controls and power behavior understandable instead of scattering one routine across several overlapping timers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Windows Clock alarms work when the app is closed?

Microsoft documents alarms and timers working while the Clock app is closed or the device is locked. The computer still has to remain awake, and notifications, volume and power settings must permit the alert.

Can I use PowerToys Awake to make an alarm work while the PC is locked?

No. Awake runs in the user session and does not work at the lock screen. Configure the Windows power plan if the computer must remain awake while locked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Pomro require an account or internet connection?

Pomro’s publisher says it works offline without an account and stores settings, activities and focus history locally. Verify the current listing and permissions because those are publisher claims that may change.

What is the difference between a timer and a focus session?

A timer counts down a duration and ends with an alert. A Focus session is a bounded work block that can include breaks and automatically control Do Not Disturb, taskbar badges and flashing.

Is Windows 10 still supported for these apps?

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025 under Microsoft’s standard support terms. Some app documentation still lists Windows 10 compatibility, but that does not provide current operating-system security support.
