The best free way to loop prerecorded video on YouTube Live is to run OBS Studio on a computer that stays on and connected to the internet. OBS is free and open-source, and YouTube supplies the server URL and stream key that connect it to your channel. The trade-off is that your computer and connection must keep the broadcast running. If you want the stream to run without a computer at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
Choose a method: free local streaming or cloud hosting
| Method | Cost basis | Where the stream runs | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio on your computer | OBS is free; electricity, internet, and hardware may still cost money. | Your computer sends the feed directly to YouTube. | No encoder subscription, but the computer and connection must remain available. |
| StreamNeo cloud streaming | One free day per account; paid periods are available. | StreamNeo runs the uploaded video from the cloud to YouTube. | Does not require a computer at home to stay on, but uses a paid service after the free day. |
| YouTube-listed Upstream | Current pricing and plan limits are not stated in YouTube’s encoder guidance; check with the provider. | Provider-managed cloud studio. | Could avoid running a local encoder, but current price, reliability, and service terms are not established by YouTube’s listing. |
For a genuinely free setup, start with OBS. If electricity, a home connection, or leaving a computer running makes that impractical, compare cloud services by recurring cost, source-video and playlist controls, interruption recovery, service limits, and archive handling. The cited official information does not establish a reliability ranking for cloud providers.

Check YouTube eligibility and prepare the stream
YouTube Help’s guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its general live-streaming guidance gives 16 as the minimum age to livestream. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so confirm access well before you plan to broadcast. These platform rules can change; check the current YouTube Help pages before starting.
- Confirm livestream access. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and check that the channel can create a live stream. Resolve any verification or eligibility issue before building the broadcast.
- Create or schedule a stream. Use the Live Control Room to create a stream or schedule one. For a scheduled event, YouTube’s encoder guidance says you still need to go live in the Live Control Room after the encoder feed is ready.
- Copy the connection details. Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; reset it in YouTube’s stream settings if you believe it has been exposed.
- Prepare the video source. In OBS, add your prerecorded video as a media source and enable its looping option for a single-video loop. For a sequence of videos, configure a playlist or media-source rotation using the controls in your current OBS build. Menu wording can vary by version, so verify the source’s loop or playlist behavior with a short test rather than assuming the next file will start automatically.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start streaming in OBS, then confirm the feed appears in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Check picture, sound, and the intended watch page before relying on a long broadcast.
OBS Project’s Help Portal describes OBS as free, open-source software developed by volunteer contributors, and explains that the stream is sent directly from the computer to the destination. OBS therefore avoids an encoder subscription, not the need for a working computer and internet connection.

Test before leaving a stream running
YouTube recommends testing a live stream and monitoring the Live Control Room preview. Its encoder tips recommend setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder 15 minutes before a scheduled event; these are operational recommendations, not requirements for every broadcast.
- Watch the preview long enough to confirm the video loops or advances to the next item as intended.
- Check audio levels and synchronization, and confirm that the live event opens on the expected watch page and devices.
- Leave the local computer awake, connected to power, and on a stable internet connection. Sleep, restarts, network outages, or encoder failure can interrupt a locally hosted stream.
- Monitor an extended broadcast. YouTube recommends continuous monitoring during an event; an unattended local setup has no guarantee of recovering from a problem by itself.
Plan for the live event, replay, and viewer controls
A continuous live broadcast and its replay archive are separate concerns. YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a longer, around-the-clock stream will produce one complete, permanent replay. If an archive matters, plan the broadcast length and verify YouTube’s current archive guidance rather than treating the livestream as guaranteed recording storage.

YouTube’s DVR setting can let viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream. The platform notes that lower latency may increase playback buffering; low latency matters less when a prerecorded stream is not interacting with viewers. Choose stream settings based on the viewing experience you need, and test them before a long run.

Use only material you have the right to broadcast
Looping a recording does not change its copyright status or exempt it from YouTube rules. YouTube says livestreams must comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and its stream settings include rights-management controls. Use video, music, artwork, and other material you own or are authorized to broadcast. YouTube may restrict or remove content that violates its rules.

Read YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and live stream settings and rights controls before broadcasting material whose rights are not straightforward.
Troubleshoot common problems
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification, livestream eligibility, and whether the channel has had a restriction within YouTube’s 90-day window. If live streaming was just enabled for the first time, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube shows no encoder feed: Confirm OBS is streaming, and check that its server URL and stream key match the current stream in the Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed or copied incorrectly, reset it in YouTube settings and update OBS.
- The video stops instead of repeating: Recheck the media source’s loop setting or playlist configuration in your OBS version, then test the transition between files before restarting a long broadcast.
- The broadcast drops when nobody is watching: A local encoder still depends on the computer, power, and network. Check for sleep settings, system restarts, network interruptions, and OBS status. YouTube’s cited guidance does not promise that a local encoder will automatically recover.
- Viewers report buffering: Inspect the encoder preview and connection stability, then consider YouTube’s latency trade-off. Its guidance notes that lower latency can mean more buffering.
- The stream runs longer than the replay: YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. Do not assume a longer continuous event will be saved as a single complete replay.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. It is for YouTube streams of uploaded video, not camera-based broadcasts.
