It is free on Steam, supports VR, and can be played alone or in online co-op. For a shorter, focused PC-VR scare, try Propagation VR. If you already own the underlying PC game, Half-Life 2: VR Mod is another no-cost route. Steam’s free-VR listings also include smaller experiments such as Haunt Out VR, Lights Out Vr, Delirium, Memento Mori and The Creature Zone VR.
Rustmourne is not released yet: its official listing points to Steam and an early-2027 launch window. The choices below are therefore practical games and experiences you can check today, with platform and ownership caveats clearly separated so “free” does not become a surprise purchase.

1. SCP: Labrat — the strongest all-round choice
SCP: Labrat is the clearest recommendation when you want one free VR horror game that can occupy more than a single short session. Steam lists it as Free to Play and VR Supported. It also supports both single-player and online co-op, so the same download can work for a solo horror night or a session with friends.

What you do
The premise is an escape from an underground SCP research facility after a containment breach. You are moving through a compromised research environment rather than entering a sequence of unrelated haunted-house scenes. That setup naturally supports searching rooms, reading the situation, deciding where it is safe to move and reacting when containment fails.
Why it fits a Rustmourne waiting list
- Survival-horror exploration: the facility setting puts navigation and uncertainty at the centre of the experience.
- Procedural elements: the game is a better match for players who want some variation between attempts instead of a completely fixed path.
- Flexible group size: explicit single-player and online co-op support lets you choose between isolation and shared panic.
- No entry price: Steam’s Free to Play listing means you can test the concept without buying a game first.
Who should start here
Choose SCP: Labrat if you want the closest match to a conventional survival-horror game among these free options, or if you are not sure whether you will play alone. It is also the safest first download when your priority is more than a brief VR demonstration.
What to verify before launching
Open the current Steam page to check the supported headset mode, system requirements and the present state of online features. VR Supported means the listing recognises VR compatibility; it does not guarantee that every headset, controller layout or PC will perform identically. If you plan to use co-op, confirm that the current build still exposes the multiplayer option and that everyone is installing the same version.
2. Propagation VR — a focused free PC-VR scare
Propagation VR appears in Steam’s current free-to-play VR search as Free and VR Only. Those two labels answer the most important compatibility question: this is intended to be played in a headset, not as a conventional flat-screen game with optional motion support.
Why choose it
Propagation VR is best treated as a concentrated horror experience rather than a broad recommendation for a long campaign. That makes it useful when you want to demonstrate VR horror to someone, fit a session into a short evening or move straight from the Rustmourne-style premise you are waiting for into an immediate headset experience.

Check the PC requirement first
Steam’s free search label does not tell you whether your computer meets the current performance requirement. Read the individual store page before installing, especially if you are using a laptop, an older graphics card or wireless PC-VR streaming. Confirm the required headset connection method and the listed operating-system and hardware requirements on that page.
Best use case
Pick Propagation VR when your decision is, “I want a free PC-VR horror game that starts quickly.” Pick SCP: Labrat instead when you need co-op, a larger exploration loop or a game you can return to repeatedly.

3. Half-Life 2: VR Mod — free software with a base-game condition
Half-Life 2: VR Mod is identified by VR.org’s 2026 guide as a free PC-VR horror option, but it is not a standalone game purchase. The mod depends on the underlying PC game, so check the current ownership and installation requirements before treating it as a no-cost download.
Understand the cost correctly
There are two separate items: the VR modification and the original PC game it modifies. The mod can be free while the required base game is not included. If you already own the underlying game, the marginal cost of trying the VR version may be limited to the download and your existing PC-VR setup. If you do not own it, calculate that purchase before choosing this option.
Why it remains worth considering
A mod built around an established campaign can offer a longer, more structured commitment than a short horror attraction. It is a sensible choice for players who prefer progressing through a full game world rather than sampling several small experiments. The trade-off is setup complexity: you must follow the mod’s current instructions, keep the required base game installed and confirm that your headset and controllers are supported.

Installation checklist
- Confirm that you own the required underlying PC game and that it is installed in the location expected by the current mod instructions.
- Read the latest installation directions from the mod’s official distribution page rather than relying on an old guide or a copied file list.
- Check the supported headset, controller and PC requirements before downloading large files.
- Launch the mod once in a stationary area, verify that your controllers are mapped correctly and only then change comfort or movement settings.
If any of those prerequisites is unclear, choose SCP: Labrat or Propagation VR first; their Steam listings provide a more direct starting point.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →4. Smaller Steam discoveries to try next
Steam’s free VR search also surfaces Haunt Out VR, Lights Out Vr, Delirium, Memento Mori and The Creature Zone VR. These entries are useful as a discovery queue, not as a promise that every title is a complete, currently free game.
How to evaluate each entry
- Check the product type: identify whether the page describes a full game, prologue, demo or short experience.
- Check the headset mode: distinguish VR Only from VR Supported and look for the specific headset or input requirements.
- Check current pricing: a search result can change after a promotion, update or delisting.
- Check maintenance: an older experiment may launch but lack support for newer drivers, controllers or operating systems.
Because these are smaller and more variable releases, they are ideal for a “try next” list after the three primary recommendations. Do not assume that a title’s presence in a free search guarantees a full-length campaign or native support for a standalone headset.
Quest standalone versus PC SteamVR
“Free VR horror game” describes two different buying paths. Quest standalone games run on the headset itself. SteamVR games run through a Windows PC and a compatible wired or wireless connection. The shortlist above is anchored in Steam and PC VR, so you should establish which path you are using before downloading anything.
Quest 3 as a hardware route
Quest 3 is a current VR platform, but owning a Quest 3 does not automatically make every Steam VR title a standalone download. To play a PC VR game, the headset must connect to a capable gaming PC using a compatible connection method. A game can therefore be free on Steam while still requiring a substantial PC and the appropriate cable or wireless network.

Use this platform checklist
- Standalone Quest: No native Quest versions are established for the three primary recommendations, so verify each title rather than assuming compatibility.
- PC SteamVR: check the Steam page, install the required VR runtime and confirm that your PC meets the listed graphics and connection requirements.
- Cross-buy or cross-play: never assume that buying or downloading one edition unlocks another. Storefront editions and multiplayer support can differ.
- Storage and updates: leave room for the game, mod files and subsequent patches, particularly for a campaign-sized installation.
Choose by the kind of horror you want
| Your priority | Start with | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One game with the broadest feature mix | SCP: Labrat | Free Steam listing, VR support, solo play and online co-op |
| A short, direct PC-VR experience | Propagation VR | Steam identifies it as Free and VR Only |
| A longer campaign and you already own the base game | Half-Life 2: VR Mod | Free mod with an underlying PC-game requirement |
| Experimental or brief experiences | The additional Steam discoveries | Search broadly, then verify whether each result is a demo, small game or full release |
| Playing entirely without a gaming PC | Verify native Quest listings first | Steam VR compatibility alone does not establish standalone Quest support |
How to install and test a free Steam VR horror game
Use the following process for SCP: Labrat, Propagation VR and any other Steam entry. It prevents the most common mistake: downloading a title before confirming that its headset mode matches your setup.
- Identify your play path. Decide whether you are using a standalone headset or connecting to a PC. If you are using PC VR, confirm that the computer is connected to the headset by a supported wired or wireless method.
- Open the current store page. Read the VR labels, system requirements, supported input notes and whether the page says Free to Play, Free or something else. Do not rely on a search snippet alone.
- Check the commitment. Look for words such as demo, prologue, mod or experience. A free listing can describe a short sample rather than a complete game.
- Install the required runtime. For PC VR, install and update the VR software requested by your headset and the game. Start the headset connection before launching the title so the correct display mode is detected.
- Run a seated or stationary test. Confirm that the image is stable, the controllers track correctly and the game starts in the headset. Adjust comfort settings before attempting artificial locomotion.
- Test audio and multiplayer. Horror depends on positional sound, while co-op depends on current online functionality. For SCP: Labrat, test the single-player launch first, then invite other players after everyone confirms the same version.
- Stop if performance is poor. Stuttering, image drops or tracking problems can cause discomfort. Lower the game’s graphics settings, improve the connection or stop the session until the problem is fixed.
Common problems and practical fixes
The game opens on the monitor instead of in VR
Close it, start the headset and its PC-VR runtime first, then launch the game again. Re-read the store page for the supported headset mode. A title marked VR Only should not be treated as a normal flat-screen fallback, while VR Supported may expose more than one launch mode.
The headset is detected but controllers do not work
Check the game’s current controller notes and restart with the controllers already paired. Mods can require a particular binding profile, so follow the mod’s current instructions rather than importing an old community layout.
The game runs but feels uncomfortable
Begin seated or in a stationary play area, reduce movement speed, enable snap turning if available and take breaks at the first sign of eye strain or motion sickness. A free game is not worth pushing through discomfort.
Co-op cannot find a session
Confirm that the title still advertises online co-op, that every player is on the same version and that network permissions are not blocking the connection. SCP: Labrat explicitly supports online co-op, but live matchmaking and server behaviour can change with updates.

A mod refuses to install
Recheck the underlying game ownership requirement, installation path and current mod instructions. Do not copy files from an outdated guide into a different edition of the base game; that can create a broken or incomplete installation.
What “free” means in this list
The word free covers several different situations:
- Free to Play: the store allows the game download without an upfront purchase, as with SCP: Labrat’s Steam listing.
- Free listing: Steam’s free-VR search currently labels Propagation VR as Free, but you should still open the page to confirm its present status.
- Free mod: the software costs nothing, but a required underlying game may be separately owned, as with Half-Life 2: VR Mod.
- Free demo or experiment: a short release may have no price while offering only a limited slice of gameplay.
Checking this distinction before installation keeps your expectations realistic and prevents an apparently free recommendation from becoming an unexpected purchase.
A sensible order for your first weekend
- Start with SCP: Labrat. It covers solo and online co-op and gives you the broadest test of whether this kind of facility-based survival horror suits you.
- Use Propagation VR as a shorter second session. Its Free and VR Only labels make it a straightforward PC-VR experiment, provided your computer meets the current requirements.
- Try Half-Life 2: VR Mod only after checking ownership. It is the best fit when you already have the base game and want a more substantial mod setup.
- Browse the additional Steam discoveries. Use Haunt Out VR, Lights Out Vr, Delirium, Memento Mori and The Creature Zone VR as a rotating queue, verifying the current product type and headset mode for each one.
This order moves from the least ambiguous download to the most conditional option, then leaves room for shorter experiments once you know what your headset and PC handle well.

Bottom line
Download SCP: Labrat first if you want the most complete free VR horror option: it is free on Steam, VR supported, playable solo and supports online co-op. Choose Propagation VR for a focused PC-VR scare. Choose Half-Life 2: VR Mod when you already satisfy its underlying-game requirement. Treat the remaining Steam results as experiments, and always verify current pricing, headset mode, requirements and whether the listing is a full game or a demo before pressing Install.
