Windscribe Free is an alternative if you want a stated choice of 10 country locations and can stay within its monthly data allowance. PrivadoVPN Free also appears in a September 2026 editorial comparison, but its current terms need checking with the provider before relying on a specific allowance or feature.
These plans are not interchangeable: data limits, available locations, device rules and the strength of privacy evidence all matter. The details below distinguish provider specifications from a third-party publication’s assessment; no hands-on installation, speed, leak or streaming tests are claimed here.

Which free VPN fits your Windows use?
Choose Proton VPN Free for uncapped data
Proton’s Windows free-plan page advertises unlimited data and no speed limits, making it the most straightforward option here for browsing without tracking a monthly data bucket. Those are the provider’s statements, not a guarantee of a particular real-world speed or reliability. Its page names Windows 10 and 11 and a separate ARM build.

Choose Windscribe Free if its allowance and locations suit you
Windscribe states that its free plan provides 10 GB monthly after email confirmation, or 2 GB monthly without it, plus 10 country locations and unlimited device connections. This can be useful if you need a stated location choice or want to use the account across devices, but the allowance makes it a poor match for heavy video use. Check the provider’s current terms before signing up because free-plan limits can change.
Consider PrivadoVPN only after confirming current terms
Tom’s Guide’s September 2, 2026 comparison recommends PrivadoVPN Free and compares its allowance, post-cap use, streaming, locations and device count with the other services. Those rankings and performance observations are that publication’s editorial assessment, not tests reproduced here. Consult PrivadoVPN’s own plan details to confirm what is currently included.

What the comparisons do—and do not—tell you about privacy
A VPN routes traffic through a VPN provider rather than directly through your internet connection. That can help protect traffic on the path between your device and the VPN server, but it does not make you anonymous or prevent tracking by accounts, cookies, browser fingerprinting or malware.
Provider statements about features such as a kill switch or leak protection are not equivalent to independent verification of a no-logs policy. The cited Proton page describes kill-switch and DNS/IPv6 leak-protection features. The Windscribe page lists firewall and other Windows features. These product descriptions alone do not establish the scope of either provider’s logging practices or independently audited privacy performance; the available information does not establish a like-for-like review of full policies or audit reports.

Streaming and locations are not guarantees
The Tom’s Guide comparison evaluates streaming alongside data, locations and device limits, but streaming access can change as services and VPN providers update their systems. A publication’s result on September 2, 2026 is a dated editorial test, not a promise that a particular service will work for you now, in every country or with every streaming account.
Likewise, a listed country location does not establish that you can choose every city or individual server in that country. If accessing a particular region is essential, check the provider’s current free-plan server list before creating an account.

Install the right Windows app safely
- Check your Windows version and device architecture. Proton’s cited page specifies Windows 10 and 11 support and offers a special ARM build; use the installer that matches your device.
- Open the provider’s official Windows or free-plan page, rather than a third-party download site: Proton VPN or Windscribe.
- For Proton, the provider’s setup sequence is to create or use a Proton account, download and install the app, sign in, and connect. Follow the provider’s current on-screen prompts.
- For any free plan, confirm the current data allowance, locations, device rules and required signup details before relying on it. Disconnect or change servers through the app when finished.
How to make the final choice
- Prioritize unlimited advertised data: Proton VPN Free is the clearest match among the plans with specific terms established here.
- Prioritize stated free locations and multi-device use: Windscribe lists 10 country locations and unlimited device connections, with a monthly data cap.
- Prioritize a broader shortlist: PrivadoVPN is included in Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison, but confirm its current official terms rather than assuming the comparison’s figures remain valid.
- Prioritize verifiable privacy evidence: Read each provider’s current privacy policy and audit information directly; feature lists and editorial recommendations are not substitutes.
