Short answer: current evidence does not establish five genuinely free VPN plans that allow peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic. PrivadoVPN is the strongest provisional candidate: its free plan supplies 10 GB of uncapped-speed data each month, and 2026 independent comparisons report P2P access, but its own plan page does not expressly confirm torrenting. Windscribe Free and Proton VPN Free are not free torrenting plans under their current provider documentation. Hotspot Shield Basic and paid subscriptions offered with refund periods require direct verification and should not be presented as free VPNs.
That distinction matters. A provider can allow torrenting on its paid network while blocking it on free servers. Before opening a torrent client, confirm P2P permission for the exact plan and server, enable a kill switch or firewall, and bind the client to the VPN interface where supported.

What counts as a free P2P VPN?
For this guide, a free P2P VPN must meet all of these conditions:
- It has an ongoing free tier rather than a temporary trial or a paid subscription that can later be refunded.
- The provider allows P2P on the free tier itself, not merely on paid servers.
- The permission applies to the server locations available to free users.
- The plan’s data, speed, device and location limits are disclosed clearly enough to judge whether torrenting is practical.
A refund period is not the same thing as a free plan. You still create a paid subscription, may need to pay upfront, and must comply with the provider’s cancellation terms. Likewise, unlimited VPN data does not imply unlimited torrenting: a provider can block BitTorrent while allowing ordinary web traffic.

2026 comparison: five commonly mentioned options
| Service | Ongoing free tier | P2P status on free access | Limits reported for 2026 | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PrivadoVPN Free | Yes | Independent 2026 reviews report P2P on free locations; the provider’s current free-plan page does not explicitly confirm it. | 10 GB per month at uncapped speed, then Lite Mode; one device at a time reported by Gizmodo. | Strongest provisional candidate. Verify current P2P permission and whether Lite Mode permits P2P. |
| Windscribe Free | Yes | Not supported. Windscribe’s help page says P2P is disabled on free servers. | 2 GB per month by default or 10 GB after email confirmation. | Useful for general VPN browsing, not a free torrenting plan. |
| Hotspot Shield Basic | Reported as ongoing free by Gizmodo | Gizmodo reports P2P capability, but current provider confirmation was not established. | 500 MB per day at full speed, then 2 Mbps; US-only servers, according to Gizmodo. | Do not rely on it for torrenting until its current terms confirm P2P. |
| NordVPN | No ongoing free tier established | Gizmodo reports P2P support on its paid network. | 30-day refund period described by Gizmodo; current price and terms require confirmation. | Paid VPN with a refund policy, not a free VPN. |
| Proton VPN Free | Yes | Not supported. Proton lists BitTorrent as a paid feature and directs P2P users to paid P2P servers. | Unlimited time and data on the free plan. | Excellent for unlimited ordinary VPN use, but not free torrenting. |
Gizmodo’s September 4, 2026 comparison says it examined more than 40 free plans, selected three ongoing free options and two paid options with refund periods. Its Windscribe conclusion conflicts with Windscribe’s own documentation dated October 23, 2025 and July 30, 2026; the provider documentation is the more specific evidence for free-server behavior.
1. PrivadoVPN Free: the leading but unconfirmed candidate
PrivadoVPN is the closest match to the search for a best free VPN for torrenting, but the recommendation must remain provisional. Its current free-plan page advertises 10 GB of uncapped-speed data every month. After that allowance, the account continues in Lite Mode rather than stopping completely. That is useful for light browsing, but a torrent user must confirm whether Lite Mode still permits P2P and what speed is available.
Gizmodo’s September 2026 comparison and Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison report that PrivadoVPN’s free locations support torrenting. Those reports do not replace an explicit current provider rule. The official plan material establishes the allowance, not P2P permission. Check the provider’s support documentation or obtain written confirmation before transferring files.

What the allowance means for torrenting
The 10 GB is a monthly total, not a one-time download allowance. Download traffic counts, and upload traffic from seeding also consumes the allowance. A 7 GB torrent can therefore leave little room for protocol overhead, verification traffic and seeding. Once the uncapped-speed allowance is exhausted, Lite Mode may be too slow for practical transfers, and its P2P eligibility is not established here.
Device and privacy considerations
Gizmodo reports one device at a time for the free account. PrivadoVPN’s own page states a zero-logs policy. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 review says that policy had not been independently audited at the time of its review, so treat “zero logs” as a provider claim rather than proof of anonymity.
2. Windscribe Free: generous browsing allowance, no free P2P
Windscribe Free provides 2 GB per month by default. Confirming an email address raises the allowance to 10 GB per month. Those limits can cover occasional browsing through a VPN, but Windscribe’s help article by Winder S, dated October 23, 2025, states plainly: “P2P is disabled on our free servers at this time.” That rule means the free plan does not qualify as a VPN that allows P2P, even though paid Windscribe locations may have different policies.

Gizmodo’s 2026 comparison reportedly marked Windscribe as P2P-capable, but the provider’s current free-server documentation resolves the conflict. Do not start a torrent on a free server simply because a third-party list labels the service “torrent friendly.”
What Windscribe Free is still good for
- Protecting ordinary web traffic on public Wi-Fi within the 2 GB or 10 GB monthly allowance.
- Testing a VPN client, firewall behavior and connection stability without paying.
- Using paid P2P locations if you later choose a subscription, subject to the provider’s current terms.
Windscribe’s marketing claims a no-identifying-logs policy. That is a provider statement, not independent verification, and it should not be translated into a promise of anonymity.
3. Hotspot Shield Basic: a reported option that needs verification
Gizmodo reports that Hotspot Shield Basic remains an ongoing free option and supports P2P. The same comparison reports a daily allowance of 500 MB at full speed, followed by 2 Mbps, with US-only servers. This combination is restrictive for large torrents: the high-speed allowance resets daily, while the fallback speed can make downloading and seeding impractical.
Current provider confirmation of P2P eligibility, the exact free-server list and the treatment of uploads were not established. Until those terms are checked, regard Hotspot Shield Basic as an unverified candidate rather than a recommendation. A P2P label in an older comparison may describe a paid tier or a policy that has since changed.
Questions to ask before using it
- Does Basic explicitly permit BitTorrent on the US free locations?
- Does the 500 MB figure cover upload and seeding as well as downloads?
- Does the 2 Mbps fallback continue to allow P2P, or is P2P stopped after the daily allowance?
- Is a kill switch available on the operating system and client version you use?
4. NordVPN: paid service with a refund period
NordVPN is not an ongoing free VPN in the evidence available for this comparison. Gizmodo reports P2P support across its paid network and describes a 30-day refund period. That arrangement can reduce the financial risk of a short evaluation, but it remains a paid subscription: you may have to pay first, and eligibility depends on the provider’s current billing and cancellation terms.
Do not describe a refund window as a “free trial” or include it in a list of free P2P VPNs. Verify the current price, renewal date, refund exclusions and P2P server requirements directly before subscribing.

5. Proton VPN Free: unlimited data, BitTorrent excluded
Proton VPN’s free plan is attractive for ordinary VPN use because Proton states: “We don’t impose any time, speed, or data limits if you’re on the Proton VPN Free plan.” That unlimited allowance does not make it a free torrenting VPN. Proton’s plan comparison lists BitTorrent as a paid feature and identifies P2P-optimized servers in paid plans.
In practical terms, unlimited data removes one common free-plan problem but not the decisive one: the free servers do not provide the permission required by a torrent client. A paid Proton plan may support P2P and may have a refund window, but that is a separate paid product and should be evaluated under its current terms.
How to verify that a free plan allows P2P
Policies can differ by account type, server and client version. Use this checklist immediately before transferring data:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the provider’s current help or acceptable-use documentation and search for “P2P,” “BitTorrent” and “free servers.”
- Confirm that the wording applies to the free tier, not just the paid network.
- Check the exact locations shown in your free account. A location marked P2P on a paid map may be unavailable or blocked for free users.
- Confirm whether the allowance includes uploads, seeding and protocol overhead.
- Check the device limit and whether another active session will disconnect your torrent client.
- Read the logging and copyright sections. A privacy policy does not legalize infringement or guarantee anonymity.
- Run a harmless test torrent, such as a legitimate Linux distribution, and check the public peer IP before downloading anything sensitive.
If the provider does not expressly answer whether free servers allow P2P, classify the plan as unconfirmed rather than assuming permission.
Safe torrent setup: kill switch first, binding second
A VPN changes the route and the IP address that peers normally see, but a brief VPN drop can send the torrent client back through your regular connection. Configure the network protection before starting the client.
Generic setup sequence
- Install the provider’s current desktop app and sign in to the account that actually has the free allowance.
- Enable the app’s kill switch, firewall or equivalent “block connections outside the VPN” setting. Prefer an always-on mode when available.
- Connect to a server that the provider explicitly identifies as P2P-capable for your plan.
- Open the torrent client only after the VPN shows a protected connection.
- If the client supports interface binding, select the VPN adapter rather than a generic “any interface” setting.
- Pause or exit the client before disconnecting the VPN. Reconnect first if you need to continue seeding.
- Test the configuration with a legal torrent and a known IP-check torrent. Stop immediately if the peer address shows your normal connection.
Windscribe’s provider-specific Windows guidance
Windscribe’s July 30, 2026 guide for uTorrent Classic on Windows recommends enabling its Firewall in Always On mode, connecting to a location marked as P2P-capable before starting uTorrent, and exiting uTorrent before disconnecting. The guide warns that adapter IP bindings can change, so interface binding is a secondary safeguard rather than a replacement for the firewall. These exact instructions are specific to Windscribe’s client and uTorrent Classic; other VPNs and torrent clients may use different labels.

Data, speed and seeding: why “free” runs out quickly
Free plans are usually designed for occasional browsing, not continuous downloading. A 10 GB monthly cap can disappear through one medium-sized game image, a few high-bitrate videos or several days of seeding. Uploads count on many metered plans, so leaving a torrent active overnight can consume the allowance even when no new file is being downloaded.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallDaily caps create a different constraint. Hotspot Shield Basic’s reported 500 MB full-speed allowance resets by day, but a torrent that exceeds it may continue at 2 Mbps. That is roughly 0.25 megabytes per second before protocol overhead, so a 10 GB transfer would take many hours even if the connection remained stable. The figure is a practical illustration of the reported speed ceiling, not an independent benchmark.
When comparing plans, record four separate limits instead of one headline number:
- Allowance period: monthly, daily or unlimited.
- Speed mode: uncapped until a threshold, permanently capped or reduced after the threshold.
- Direction: whether uploads and seeding consume the same quota as downloads.
- Scope: whether the limit applies per account, device or server session.
Privacy, logging and copyright boundaries
A VPN can conceal your home IP address from ordinary peers while the tunnel is active, but it does not make you anonymous. The provider can still process account, payment, diagnostic or connection information according to its policy, and a misconfigured client can expose your address.
Use precise language when evaluating logging claims. PrivadoVPN states a zero-logs policy; Tom’s Guide reported that the policy had not been independently audited at the time of its 2026 review. Windscribe advertises a no-identifying-logs policy, but its product page is not independent verification. Unless an applicable audit or primary evidence is available, describe these as provider policies rather than proven anonymity.

Which option fits your situation?
You need occasional legal torrenting without paying
Start with PrivadoVPN only after obtaining current confirmation that its free locations permit P2P. Budget the 10 GB monthly uncapped-speed allowance, and treat Lite Mode as a separate, potentially unsuitable fallback until its P2P behavior is confirmed.
You need unlimited VPN data but not torrenting
Proton VPN Free is the clearest fit for ordinary browsing because its plan has no stated time, speed or data limits. Its free plan still excludes BitTorrent, so select a paid P2P plan if torrenting is essential.
You want a free VPN for public Wi-Fi and general browsing
Windscribe Free’s 2 GB default allowance, or 10 GB after email confirmation, can serve that purpose. Do not use its free servers for P2P because the provider explicitly disables it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou are considering a paid service temporarily
NordVPN’s reported 30-day refund period is a paid-subscription route, not a free plan. Confirm the current refund conditions and price before purchase, and cancel according to the provider’s stated process if you do not intend to renew.
You are evaluating an unconfirmed free candidate
Hotspot Shield Basic should remain on a watch list until its current terms confirm P2P, the daily quota behavior and the available safety controls. A third-party comparison alone is not enough for a privacy-sensitive transfer.
Bottom line for 2026
There is no evidence here for five confirmed free P2P VPNs. PrivadoVPN Free is the only plausible starting point, and even it needs direct confirmation of free-tier P2P permission and Lite Mode behavior. Windscribe Free blocks P2P on free servers; Proton VPN Free excludes BitTorrent despite unlimited data; Hotspot Shield Basic is reported as P2P-capable but unverified; and NordVPN is a paid service with a reported refund period. Verify the exact policy, protect the torrent client with a kill switch or firewall, bind its interface where supported, and use the connection only for lawful sharing.
