PrivadoVPN Free is the clearest choice if you need to select a Mexican IP address at no cost: Gizmodo’s October 2026 comparison reports that its tester manually connected to Mexico City, with a 10 GB monthly data allowance. If you care more about unlimited data than choosing Mexico on demand, Proton VPN Free is an alternative—but its free app assigns your server automatically, so Mexico’s presence on the location list does not mean you can select it.
Which free VPN lets you choose a Mexican server?
In Gizmodo’s October 2026 comparison, PrivadoVPN Free was the tested free plan that let the reviewer manually select a Mexico City server. The comparison reports a 10 GB monthly cap. That makes it a better fit for occasional browsing or limited use than for sustained video streaming.

Why a Mexico location listing may not be enough
A VPN can list Mexico as a location without giving free users a control to choose it. Proton’s official information lists Mexico among its free-server countries, while its support documentation says the app connects free users to a fast free server automatically and limits location changes. That is useful if you mainly want a VPN connection with no data cap, but it does not meet a requirement to obtain a Mexican IP address whenever you choose.
Windscribe’s Mexico page names a Querétaro server, but the page does not show that the endpoint is part of its free tier. Gizmodo’s test comparison says Windscribe Free did not provide Mexican servers. Treat a country or city appearing on a general server page as insufficient proof of free-tier access.

Will a free Mexican VPN work for streaming?
There is no dependable yes-or-no answer based on the available tests. Gizmodo reports that its PrivadoVPN Free connection opened ViX, TUDN, and Netflix Mexico. Top10VPN, reviewing PrivadoVPN’s free service, reports that it could not access TV Azteca, TUDN, Netflix Mexico, or Claro Video. The disagreement—on TUDN and Netflix Mexico in particular—shows why a test result should not be treated as a continuing promise.

PrivadoVPN’s reported 10 GB monthly allowance is also a practical constraint for watching video. Proton says streaming access is not guaranteed on its free tier, and its automatic server assignment makes it a poor match when you specifically need a selectable Mexican exit.

How fast was the tested Mexico City connection?
Gizmodo reports a PrivadoVPN Free download speed of 126.39 Mbps and upload speed of 13.72 Mbps from Mexico City in its October 2026 comparison. Its test used a Windows 11 PC in Europe, where the no-VPN baseline was 190.36 Mbps. These are measurements from that setup, not typical-speed promises for other locations, devices, or times.
For context, the same comparison reported 76.78 Mbps for Proton VPN’s paid plan, 178.08 Mbps for NordVPN, and 147.51 Mbps for ExpressVPN. These are paid-plan results in Gizmodo’s test, not free alternatives or like-for-like guarantees. The comparison also reported 30 Mexican servers for NordVPN and one Mexican location for ExpressVPN.

Choose based on what you need the Mexican IP for
For occasional browsing from abroad
PrivadoVPN Free is the most direct option in the cited test if you need to choose Mexico City yourself and can stay within its reported monthly allowance. Check that the free app still offers the endpoint and that your intended service accepts it before relying on it.
For unlimited general VPN data
Proton VPN Free is the stronger fit when the priority is using a VPN without a data or time limit. Its free server assignment is automatic, however, so it is not a reliable way to request a Mexican IP on demand.

For regular Mexican streaming
Do not choose solely from a reviewer’s successful playback result. The published PrivadoVPN findings conflict, while the free plan’s reported data cap limits extended viewing. If a service must work consistently or you must select Mexico every time, a paid plan with manual Mexican server selection may be necessary; confirm current server access and terms with the provider before subscribing.
What a VPN does—and does not—change
A Mexican VPN exit changes the IP address a website or app sees. It does not change your phone’s GPS position or SIM registration, and it does not make you anonymous or stop every form of tracking. Using a VPN also does not override a streaming service’s terms or guarantee access to content.
