Best Free Ubuntu Games: Open-Source Picks and Free-to-Play Options That Actually Work

The strongest fully documented choice is 0 A.D., a native Linux, open-source real-time strategy game with no advertising or freemium mechanics. Ubuntu users can also reach free-to-play catalogs through Steam, and use Heroic or Lutris for libraries bought or claimed elsewhere—but those tools do not make paid games free and compatibility remains title-specific.

“Free” means three different things on Ubuntu

Before choosing a game, identify which kind of free you want. Ubuntu’s Community Help Wiki separates these categories, and the distinction affects licensing, installation and long-term cost.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Meaning What you receive Typical Ubuntu route What to check
Free and open source The game can be used without a purchase, and its source code is available under a free-software license. Artwork and code may have different licenses. Project download, Ubuntu repository, Flatpak, Snap or AppImage. License for code and assets, current Linux build, multiplayer services and update method.
No-cost proprietary You can download and play without paying, but the publisher may not grant the freedoms associated with open-source software. Official publisher or supported store. Distribution rights, account requirements and whether the download is still maintained.
Commercial free-to-play The game is free to download and play, usually with optional purchases, online accounts or other restrictions. Steam or another supported store, sometimes through a Linux launcher. Linux or Proton compatibility, account limits, paid items, anti-cheat and service availability.

The Ubuntu Community Help Wiki describes games in the Main or Universe repositories as conforming to Ubuntu’s free-software philosophy. That page was last edited in 2021, so use it for terminology rather than as a current catalogue or proof that an individual package is still available.

Best verified open-source choice: 0 A.D.

Why it stands out

0 A.D. is a free, open-source real-time strategy game about ancient warfare from Wildfire Games. Its official site announced Release 28, “Boiorix,” on February 18, 2026. Linux downloads are available directly from the developers, making it a straightforward first choice when you want a game that is both no-cost and open source.

#1 Best Overall
8Bitdo Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller for Windows PC and Android, with 1000 Hz Polling Rate, Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers, and Remappable L4/R4 Bumpers (Green)
  • Compatible with Windows and Android.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

The project identifies the game code as GPL v2 and the artwork as CC BY-SA 3.0. Those are separate permissions: the source-code license does not automatically describe every art asset, so users who modify or redistribute the game should read the project’s licensing information carefully.

No freemium layer

Wildfire Games describes its model plainly: “No ‘freemium’ model, no in-game advertising, no catch.” You can download the game directly without an ongoing subscription, an item shop or advertising interrupting play. That makes 0 A.D. different from a commercial free-to-play title even though both can be downloaded for zero cost.

Release and installation notes

Release 28 is the project’s first release without the Alpha label. That change signals a milestone, not a promise that every system will be bug-free. The release notes mention improved Linux distribution support and an official-release AppImage. Snap and Flatpak maintainers were working toward current releases, so the project’s own download page is the safest place to select the package that matches your Ubuntu installation.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
  1. Open the official 0 A.D. download page and choose the Linux package listed for your system.
  2. For an AppImage, make the downloaded file executable in its file properties, then launch it. If Ubuntu blocks execution, check the file’s permissions rather than downloading an unverified replacement.
  3. If you prefer Snap or Flatpak, confirm that the listing identifies Release 28 or a newer supported build and that the maintainer is current.
  4. Start a single-player match first. This verifies graphics, audio and input before you troubleshoot multiplayer connectivity.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it for historical real-time strategy and a fully open-source project.
  • Choose it when avoiding ads, subscriptions and in-game purchases matters more than accessing a large commercial catalogue.
  • Do not choose it expecting a modern competitive shooter or a universal replacement for every Windows strategy game; its appeal is its own ancient-world strategy design.

Other open-source and no-cost candidates

Xonotic for arena-shooter fans

The official Xonotic homepage describes it as a free, fast arena shooter. It is a natural candidate if you want action rather than a strategy campaign. Current package availability, release numbers and detailed Ubuntu support were not established in the available material, so check the project’s current download instructions before committing to an installation method. Treat the official page—not an old package listing—as the authority for supported Linux builds.

OpenTTD as a project to verify

OpenTTD’s official homepage is another first-party candidate for Ubuntu players, but current version, package and feature details are not established here. If transport or management simulation is your priority, inspect its official download and Linux instructions, then confirm that the package is maintained for your Ubuntu release.

Why the list is deliberately short

Game catalogues and distribution packages change quickly. A title can remain famous while its repository build becomes obsolete, its multiplayer service closes or its launcher stops supporting Linux. It is better to label an unverified candidate honestly than to promise native Ubuntu support based on an old list. The Ubuntu Community Help Wiki’s catalogue is useful historical context, not a freshly maintained “best games” ranking.

Free-to-play games on Ubuntu: what you are really agreeing to

Steam Support defines free-to-play games as downloadable and playable without a subscription or credit card. That does not mean every feature is permanently free. Steam Wallet purchases may unlock supported items or content, and individual games can impose their own rules.

  • Optional purchases: cosmetics, expansions, boosts or other items may be offered. Steam says you are not obligated to buy in-game items to play and progress, but the design of each game determines how prominent those offers are.
  • Account restrictions: Steam may apply limited-account rules, while a particular game may require a separate publisher account.
  • Online dependence: a free download can still require persistent internet access, an authentication service or servers that may eventually be retired.
  • Linux support: a store page can list a game even when its Linux build is absent or its Windows build works only through Proton. Check the game’s current compatibility information rather than assuming the store listing guarantees playability.

For a specific title, read its current store page for operating-system notes, anti-cheat requirements, purchases and account conditions. “Free-to-play” describes the payment model, not guaranteed Ubuntu compatibility.

How to play free games through Steam on Ubuntu

Install the documented Steam package

Canonical’s Steam documentation says the Steam client is available to Ubuntu users as a Snap on systems that support snapd, including Ubuntu. The documentation was last updated May 27, 2026.

  • Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
  1. Install Steam from Ubuntu’s App Center by searching for the official Steam package, or use the Snap installation command documented by Canonical: sudo snap install steam.
  2. Launch Steam and sign in. You can browse free-to-play titles without entering a credit card, although a particular game may request a separate account.
  3. Open a game’s store page and inspect the operating-system section, recent player reports and any anti-cheat notice before installing.
  4. Install the title, then test it in a low-stakes session. Record whether the launcher, video settings, controller and online connection all work.

Native Linux versus Proton

Some Steam games include a Linux build; others are Windows games run through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer. Proton translates selected Windows components for Linux, but it cannot make every game work. Anti-cheat, launchers, video codecs, digital-rights systems and unusual input devices can all cause failures.

Canonical separates Steam Play/Proton, controller setup, dedicated-GPU configuration, Mesa, MangoHud and troubleshooting in its Ubuntu guidance. Use those title-specific and hardware-specific sections when a game launches incorrectly. Do not infer that one successful Proton game proves another will run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common Steam failure branches

  • The game does not start: verify that Ubuntu’s graphics driver is active, try the Proton version recommended for the title, and disable unnecessary launch options before changing several variables at once.
  • Black screen or missing textures: check the dedicated-GPU and Mesa guidance, then test a different graphics API or Proton version if the game documents one.
  • Multiplayer refuses connection: inspect anti-cheat and game-server requirements. A single-player launch test does not prove that online services are supported.
  • Controller is not detected: connect the device before launching the game, check Steam Input settings and test with a known-supported title.

Heroic and Lutris: useful tools, not free-game machines

Heroic Games Launcher

Heroic is a free, open-source launcher for Epic, GOG and Amazon Prime Games on Linux, Windows and macOS. The project provides Linux Flatpak and AppImage downloads, identifies its code as GPLv3 and includes a controller-friendly console mode.

Best Value
GameSir G7 SE Wired Controller for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One & Windows 10/11, Plug and Play Gaming Gamepad with Hall Effect Joysticks/Hall Trigger, 3.5mm Audio Jack (White)
  • Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
  • Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
  • Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
  • Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
  • Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.

Heroic can help you access games you legitimately claim or buy from those stores, including free offers. The launcher itself does not change a game’s price, ownership requirement or license. A paid game remains paid, and a Windows-only game can still fail under its compatibility layer.

  1. Choose the Flatpak or AppImage listed on Heroic’s official page.
  2. Sign in only through the launcher’s supported store flow; do not enter credentials into an unofficial download.
  3. Claim or purchase the game from the store account that owns it.
  4. Select the Linux or compatibility settings recommended for that title, then test the game before adding controller mappings or performance tweaks.

Lutris

Lutris is an open gaming platform for Linux built with open-source technology. It can integrate libraries and launchers including Steam, Epic Games Store, EA App, Ubisoft Connect, GOG and Humble Bundle. Its FAQ is explicit that Lutris does not sell commercial games; it helps install and play titles purchased from game stores.

Use Lutris when you need one library view or installation scripts for games you already own. It is not a storefront, does not remove account requirements and cannot guarantee that a particular installer or game will continue working after a publisher changes its launcher.

Native packages, Flatpak, Snap, AppImage or a launcher?

Route Best for Advantages Trade-offs
Ubuntu Main or Universe Games maintained for Ubuntu’s repositories. Integrated updates and familiar package management. Versions may lag behind the project’s current release; the 2021 community list does not prove present availability.
Official AppImage Projects such as the Linux build offered for 0 A.D. Release 28. Portable package supplied directly by the project. You must manage permissions and updates yourself.
Snap Software distributed through Ubuntu’s Snap system, including Steam. Convenient installation and an integrated update channel. Confinement or integration issues can affect some games and peripherals.
Flatpak Projects that publish current desktop builds, including Heroic. Bundled runtime can provide a newer application than a distribution repository. Permissions for files, controllers or external drives may need adjustment.
Heroic or Lutris Libraries spread across multiple commercial stores. Centralized accounts, installers and compatibility settings. They do not provide ownership, remove purchase costs or guarantee compatibility.

Prefer the project’s own download instructions when a game offers a current native build. Prefer a maintained distribution package when it is clearly current and supported. Avoid random scripts or repackaged binaries that obscure who supplies updates.

Hardware and controller expectations

No universal hardware requirement can be stated for this list because no reproducible benchmark or compatibility matrix was provided. Ubuntu version, desktop environment, graphics driver, GPU architecture, memory and the game’s renderer all affect results.

  • Install current security and graphics-driver updates for your Ubuntu release before diagnosing a game.
  • Check whether your system uses integrated or dedicated graphics and select the appropriate GPU in the game or driver settings.
  • Start with the game’s default quality preset. Increase resolution or effects only after a stable baseline.
  • For couch or competitive play, a generic USB or Bluetooth PC game controller compatible with Linux is optional. Compatibility depends on the device, connection and game; it is not required for keyboard-and-mouse titles.

A practical selection guide

If you want… Start with… Why Important qualification
Open-source real-time strategy 0 A.D. Current Release 28 Linux download, GPL v2 code, CC BY-SA 3.0 artwork and no freemium or advertising model. Release 28 is a milestone, not a bug-free guarantee.
A fast arena shooter Xonotic The official homepage describes it as free and fast. Verify the current Linux package, release and online support before installing.
Transport or management simulation OpenTTD The official homepage is a first-party candidate for Ubuntu users. Current version and package details are not established here; confirm them on the project page.
A commercial game with no upfront price A Steam free-to-play title that passes the Linux/Proton check. Steam permits free download and play without a subscription or credit card. Optional purchases, account limits, anti-cheat and server requirements vary by title.
Games claimed from several stores Heroic or Lutris Both organize external libraries and help install compatible games. You still need ownership where required, and neither tool guarantees that a game runs.

Checklist before you install

  1. Decide whether “free” means open-source, no-cost proprietary software or free-to-play.
  2. Open the project or store page and confirm a current Linux build or a documented Proton path.
  3. Check the required Ubuntu version, graphics driver, storage space and account requirements.
  4. Read the purchase, anti-cheat and online-service notes for free-to-play games.
  5. Choose one installation route and keep its update mechanism enabled.
  6. Launch in single-player or training mode first, then test multiplayer and controller support.
  7. If the game fails, change one variable at a time and use the project’s or Canonical’s troubleshooting guidance.

What changes over time

Ubuntu packages, Proton versions, launcher integrations, store catalogues and game servers are moving targets. A title that works today can require a different Proton release after an update, while a repository package can remain installable but fall behind the upstream project. Recheck the official download page and the game’s current store information immediately before installing, especially for competitive multiplayer or games dependent on third-party launchers.
