For most people, start with Digital Earth Australia (DEA) Maps. It is Australia-focused, uses corrected and curated imagery, and lets you explore more than 30 years of landscape change in a browser. Choose Copernicus Australasia DISCOVER when you need to find or download Sentinel scenes, NASA Worldview when you want a fast visual comparison across dates and layers, and Google Earth Engine when you need repeatable, code-based analysis.

There is no single “best” portal for every job. The right choice depends on whether you are browsing, comparing dates, downloading source products, or calculating results from a large image collection.

Quick answer: which free tool should you use?

What you need to do Best starting point Why it fits
Explore Australian landscapes and long-term change Digital Earth Australia Maps Australia-specific curated imagery, an interactive map, and a stated history of more than 30 years of landscape imagery.
Find or download Sentinel products Copernicus Australasia DISCOVER Map-based search across the regional Sentinel archive, with download and API access. Registration is required for downloads.
Compare dates or layers visually NASA Worldview Browser time controls plus swipe, opacity, and spy comparison modes.
Run custom, repeatable analysis Google Earth Engine Cloud data catalog, browser code editor, and Python and JavaScript APIs. Free use is limited to academic and research contexts according to its product description; commercial use is offered separately.

This is a task-based recommendation, not a ranking of image quality. The official pages reviewed do not provide an apples-to-apples comparison of spatial resolution, revisit interval, accuracy, or processing speed. A portal with more layers or more frequent observations is not automatically better for a beginner.

What “viewing and comparing satellite images” can mean

Satellite portals serve different levels of work. A visual viewer may show a prepared image quickly, while an archive portal helps you locate an individual scene and download its files. An analysis platform may never look like a conventional map at all: it can expose a catalog and code environment so you can apply the same operation to thousands of images.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Visual inspection

You pan to a place, change the date or layer, and look for differences such as a new burn scar, flooding, vegetation change, or urban expansion. This is the fastest route for a one-off question and usually requires no programming.

Scene discovery and download

You search by location and time, inspect available Sentinel products, then download files for use in desktop GIS or another processing workflow. Metadata, registration, archive status, and product type matter more here than a polished map interface.

Reproducible analysis

You define an area, date range, filter, and calculation in code, then rerun it or apply it to many places. This is more powerful, but it requires learning the platform’s data model and APIs.

1. Digital Earth Australia Maps: the best Australia-first viewer

Geoscience Australia presents Digital Earth Australia (DEA) as a platform for detecting physical change across Australia. Its imagery is corrected and curated, and the agency makes the interactive DEA Maps products freely available. The DEA page describes more than 30 years of landscape imagery; that is a coverage-duration statement, not a claim that every location has an uninterrupted, cloud-free image for every day or that all products share the same resolution.

DEA’s intended users include environmental and agricultural practitioners, emergency managers, researchers, and government teams, but the map is also the most approachable option for a curious browser user. It is the strongest default when the place you care about is in Australia and your first question is, “What changed here over time?”

How to open and add a DEA product

  1. Open DEA Maps from Geoscience Australia.
  2. Choose Explore map data.
  3. Select a product that matches the question you are asking.
  4. Add the product to the map and navigate to your area of interest.
  5. Use the product’s date or layer controls to inspect the available observations and compare the landscape.

The exact controls can differ by product. Read the product description before interpreting a color ramp or index: a false-color composite, a vegetation measure, and a surface-water layer are not interchangeable views of the same phenomenon.

What makes DEA useful for Australian change detection

  • National focus: the service is designed around Australian landscapes rather than treating Australia as one region in a global browser.
  • Prepared imagery: Geoscience Australia says the imagery is corrected and curated, reducing the initial preprocessing burden for visual exploration.
  • Long historical perspective: the published description covers more than 30 years of landscape imagery.
  • A path beyond the map: analysis-ready imagery and datasets are available for download and through web services, so an advanced user can move from browsing to a GIS or automated workflow.

How to interpret the time history

“More than 30 years” describes the imagery history available through DEA’s platform, not a promise of identical observations at every point. Different products can have different date ranges, cloud handling, and processing methods. When comparing two dates, record the product name and the dates you used. If you are making a formal claim about an event, check the product documentation and metadata rather than relying on a visual impression alone.

A user reaction, properly qualified

Geoscience Australia displays this testimonial from Danielle Wright, Remote Sensing Analyst, Research and Development, Country Fire Authority: “It was at a remote sensing workshop that I heard a seminar by Dr Claire Krause from Geoscience Australia. She gave a presentation on the all the DEA data products, and I was just amazed.” It is a personal reaction published by the agency, not an independent accuracy test or comparative benchmark.

When DEA is not the right first stop

If you need the original Sentinel product files, a regional archive search, or a scripted calculation across a large collection, use DISCOVER or Earth Engine instead. DEA’s curated products are excellent for an Australia-specific view, but a curated map layer is not the same thing as a catalog of every source scene.

2. Copernicus Australasia DISCOVER: find and download Sentinel data

Copernicus Australasia DISCOVER is the practical choice when your work starts with a Sentinel product rather than a ready-made visual layer. The hub’s data-access information describes map search, downloads, and API interaction for Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, Sentinel-3, and Sentinel-5P across Australasia and nearby regions.

Downloads require registration. That account requirement is easy to miss if you are only looking for a public map, so create an account before planning a time-sensitive download.

A basic DISCOVER search workflow

  1. Open the current Copernicus Australasia DISCOVER portal.
  2. Use the map to define the Australian area you need, or search by place.
  3. Set a date range and choose the Sentinel mission or product family relevant to your question.
  4. Review the returned scenes and their metadata before selecting one.
  5. Sign in or register when the portal asks for download access.
  6. Download the product, or use the documented API route if you are building an automated workflow.

The best Sentinel family depends on the phenomenon. Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, Sentinel-3, and Sentinel-5P are different missions with different instruments and purposes. Do not compare their images as though they were identical camera photographs.

DISCOVER versus a quick visual viewer

Use DISCOVER when provenance, product files, and repeatable retrieval matter. Use DEA Maps or Worldview when you want an immediate visual answer without managing archive products. A downloaded scene may still require additional processing before it is suitable for a particular measurement.

The SARA migration caveat

The Copernicus Australasia information page says SARA remains available during migration, while the newer DISCOVER hub is the main access point for the migrated archive. It also says SARA is expected to be decommissioned after migration is complete. Because that status is time-sensitive, begin with DISCOVER and check the live portal’s instructions rather than building a new workflow around SARA.

3. NASA Worldview: the fastest visual date-and-layer comparison

NASA Worldview is a browser-based way to inspect NASA and partner imagery over time. Its current interface provides a time control, multiple image layers, and three especially useful comparison modes: swipe, opacity, and spy.

How to compare two views in Worldview

  1. Open Worldview and navigate to the Australian location.
  2. Use the time control to move to the date or period you want to inspect.
  3. Add the image layers that answer your question.
  4. Open the comparison control and choose swipe, opacity, or spy.
  5. Move the comparison boundary, change opacity, or use the spy window to inspect the same feature in both views.
  6. Note the layer name and date before drawing a conclusion.

Why Worldview is useful

  • Low friction: it is designed for immediate browser exploration.
  • Temporal interaction: the time control makes it easy to step through observations.
  • Direct visual comparison: swipe, opacity, and spy modes reveal differences that can be hard to see by toggling layers.
  • Broad coverage: you can inspect global and partner imagery, not only Australian-specific products.

Important limits

Worldview’s breadth does not mean every layer is a high-detail land image suitable for property-level inspection. Satellite products vary in spatial resolution, revisit frequency, processing, and purpose. Worldview also does not replace DEA’s Australia-specific curated products or offer the same stated historical depth. Treat it as a rapid visual browser, not as proof that every layer is directly comparable.

4. Google Earth Engine: the technical route for repeatable analysis

Google Earth Engine combines a large catalog of imagery and geospatial datasets with cloud analysis. Its product information describes a browser code editor and Python and JavaScript APIs. That makes it appropriate when you need to filter imagery, apply the same operation repeatedly, or create a workflow that another analyst can rerun.

What an Earth Engine workflow looks like

  1. Open the Earth Engine web code editor or connect through its Python or JavaScript API.
  2. Define the Australian area of interest as a geometry or imported asset.
  3. Choose an imagery collection and set date and location filters.
  4. Apply the masking, compositing, index, classification, or comparison logic your project requires.
  5. Inspect the result on the map, then export the output or continue processing it in the platform.
  6. Save the script and record the collection, date range, filters, and parameters so the result can be reproduced.

The exact collection identifier and code depend on the analysis. Earth Engine should not be treated as a no-code replacement for DEA Maps or Worldview: its advantage is control and repeatability, not the shortest path to a first image.

Is Earth Engine free?

Google says Earth Engine remains free for academic and research use and is available commercially under its commercial offering. It is therefore inaccurate to call it universally free for every commercial project. Check Google’s current eligibility and terms before committing a production workflow, especially if the work is for a business or client.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Earth Engine is worth the learning curve

  • You need the same calculation for many Australian regions.
  • You want a documented script instead of a manual sequence of clicks.
  • You need to combine imagery with other geospatial datasets in one cloud workflow.
  • You want to test date ranges, filters, or processing choices systematically.

For a single visual before-and-after check, the code editor is usually unnecessary overhead. Start with DEA Maps or Worldview and move to Earth Engine when the question becomes analytical or repetitive.

Choosing by task, data family, and account friction

Decision factor DEA Maps DISCOVER Worldview Earth Engine

Best for Exploring Australian landscape change Locating and downloading Sentinel scenes Fast date and layer inspection Repeatable, large-scale calculations
Data families identified in the reviewed material DEA corrected and curated products Sentinel-1, -2, -3 and -5P NASA and partner layers Large imagery and geospatial-data catalog
Download or API path Analysis-ready imagery and datasets via downloads and web services Downloads and API interaction; registration required for downloads Primarily an interactive browser view Python and JavaScript APIs plus browser editor
Programming needed for the first view No No for map search; useful for API automation No Usually yes for custom analysis
Published temporal figure More than 30 years of landscape imagery (Geoscience Australia page accessed 13 October 2026) Not stated on the reviewed access pages (accessed 13 October 2026) Not stated on the reviewed page (accessed 13 October 2026) Not stated on the reviewed product page (accessed 13 October 2026)

The table intentionally does not rank pixel size, accuracy, or revisit interval. Those values were not supplied as comparable figures by the official pages reviewed, and mixing products from different missions would produce a misleading scorecard.

A practical comparison method that avoids false conclusions

Whichever portal you choose, use the same discipline for every comparison:

  1. Define the question. “Did water cover this field after the storm?” needs a different layer from “How did the urban footprint grow?”
  2. Keep the area fixed. Compare the same coordinates or boundary, not two map views that are merely nearby.
  3. Record dates and product names. Write them down while you work; a layer label and a date are part of the evidence.
  4. Compare like with like where possible. A change seen between different missions or product types may reflect sensor and processing differences as well as a real landscape change.
  5. Inspect the whole scene. Clouds, shadows, smoke, haze, water glare, and seasonal conditions can look like change.
  6. Use the portal suited to the conclusion. A visual impression can guide investigation; a measurement or repeated report needs documented data and processing.
  7. Save your workflow. Keep screenshots for a one-off visual check, downloaded metadata for an archive workflow, or the script and parameters for Earth Engine.

Common problems and how to recover

“The two dates do not look comparable.”

Check whether you changed product, mission, band combination, or processing method. Return to the same layer or product family, note the acquisition dates, and inspect for clouds, smoke, seasonal vegetation, or different illumination.

“I can see a scene but cannot download it.”

On DISCOVER, download access requires registration. Sign in, complete the account process, and retry. If you are using an older SARA route, check the current migration notice and move the search to DISCOVER.

“The map has many layers, but none answers my question.”

Read each layer’s description rather than choosing by color or visual appeal. Worldview’s layer breadth includes products with different purposes, and DEA’s products are also designed for distinct environmental and operational uses.

“I need the same result for many places.”

Stop repeating manual map actions. Use DEA downloads or web services where a prepared analysis-ready dataset fits, or build a scripted workflow in Earth Engine when you need filtering and calculations across a larger collection.

“The portal interface has changed.”

These services evolve. The official pages were checked on 13 October 2026, and the Copernicus migration is specifically time-sensitive. Follow the live portal’s current labels and access instructions instead of relying on an old screenshot or bookmark.

A simple decision checklist

  • Choose DEA Maps if your priority is an Australia-first visual exploration with a long historical perspective.
  • Choose DISCOVER if you need Sentinel search, product downloads, or API access.
  • Choose Worldview if you want to move quickly between dates and use swipe, opacity, or spy comparison.
  • Choose Earth Engine if you need code, scale, or a workflow you can rerun; confirm whether your academic, research, or commercial use fits the current terms.

Starting with the simplest tool that can answer the question saves time. Move to an archive portal or analysis platform only when you need its additional control, files, or automation.
