For most observers, start with Heavens-Above or N2YO. They turn orbital data into pass predictions for a chosen location. Use CelesTrak SATCAT when you need catalog records or downloadable orbital elements, Gpredict for a desktop and amateur-radio workflow, and ESA’s MASTER and DELTA models for engineering-level debris and collision analysis. No single free tool does all of these jobs well.
Which free satellite tracker should you use?
The best choice depends on what you are trying to find out. Someone who wants to watch a bright spacecraft pass overhead needs a different interface from a developer building a ground-track map or an analyst estimating debris risk.

How satellite trackers actually work
Most public trackers predict from two-line element sets (TLEs) or related orbital elements. Those numbers describe an orbit at a particular epoch. Software propagates the orbit forward, converts the result to an observer’s latitude, longitude and altitude, and then calculates whether the object is above the horizon, in sunlight or illuminated for a possible visual sighting.

The familiar moving dot is therefore a model output. Prediction quality is usually best near the element epoch and degrades as atmospheric drag, manoeuvres and other perturbations change the orbit. Low-orbit spacecraft can shift noticeably over days, especially when solar activity increases drag. A long-range pass time should be treated as an estimate; refresh the elements before an important observation.
Why two trackers can show different answers
- Different element epochs: one service may have ingested a newer orbital solution.
- Different object identification: closely deployed spacecraft can be hard to distinguish. NASA notes that CubeSats deployed close together in space and time may be difficult for tracking radars to separate.
- Different propagation and horizon settings: atmospheric models, elevation masks and refraction assumptions affect rise and set times.
- Different visibility rules: a pass can be geometrically above the horizon but still too faint because the spacecraft is in Earth’s shadow or the sky is bright.
Heavens-Above: the easiest route to visible passes
Heavens-Above is designed around the observer’s question: “What can I see from here?” Set your location, select a date and choose a spacecraft or category. The service presents upcoming passes with rise, maximum elevation, set time and direction, which is the information needed to plan a visual observation.
Use it for
- Bright, naked-eye satellite passes.
- Pass tables for a particular observing site.
- Planning around darkness, elevation and direction.
- Checking well-known crewed spacecraft and other prominent objects.
Practical workflow
- Set the observing location as precisely as practical. A nearby city can move the predicted horizon crossing by minutes compared with a rural site.
- Open the pass list for the date and object category you care about.
- Favor passes with a high maximum elevation and a bright-magnitude estimate when available.
- Check whether the spacecraft is illuminated and whether the Sun is sufficiently below your horizon.
- Refresh the prediction close to the observation if the pass matters; newer orbital elements can shift the track.
Heavens-Above is an observer interface, not a complete debris catalogue. It is the wrong tool when you need every catalogued fragment, raw element files or statistical collision modelling.

N2YO combines a web map with object categories, future positions and ground-track views. It is useful when you want to select a class of spacecraft, follow one object interactively or compare where an orbit will travel over Earth.
Web tracking
Choose an object or category, set the observer location and inspect the current position, next passes and ground track. Category filters help separate broad groups such as weather, navigation, communications or science spacecraft. The map is convenient for orientation, but the same caveat applies: the displayed position is propagated from orbital data and is only as current as the feed.
N2YO API for small projects
The N2YO documentation describes a free API that requires registration for a license key. It provides future positions, ground tracks and category filters, making it suitable for a lightweight script, dashboard or educational project.

CelesTrak SATCAT is the better starting point when the question is “What is this object?” rather than “What will I see tonight?” Its catalog records and grouped data help you look up objects, relate names and identifiers, and obtain orbital-element feeds for further analysis.
What SATCAT is good at
- Searching for an object by catalog number, international designator or name.
- Separating active payloads, rocket bodies, debris and other catalog categories.
- Downloading current orbital-element data for use in propagation software.
- Checking live object and debris statistics.
CelesTrak’s counts are live values. They should be quoted as current only at the time you checked them, not as a permanent total. A catalog can grow when a launch adds objects, when a breakup is characterized, or when previously untracked objects receive records.
Using SATCAT with another tracker
A practical workflow is to identify an object in SATCAT, obtain its latest elements, and then load those elements into a visual or desktop tracker. Keep the object’s identifier with your notes: names can be reused or abbreviated, while catalog identifiers provide a more stable reference.
Gpredict: desktop tracking and amateur-radio operations
Gpredict is free desktop software for real-time tracking and orbit prediction. It is particularly useful for amateur-radio operators who need a persistent local display, pass times and antenna-oriented information rather than a browser tab.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why choose a desktop application?
- It can keep a local list of satellites and observation locations.
- A desktop view is convenient during a radio contact or an extended observing session.
- Its real-time tracking and prediction functions are organized around repeated use, not a one-off web lookup.
- It can be paired with current orbital-element updates before a session.
Gpredict does not replace a catalog. You still need reliable orbital elements and should update them when accuracy matters. For a casual visual pass, a web service is usually quicker; for repeated radio work, the desktop workflow can be more useful.

ESA MASTER and DELTA: technical debris analysis
ESA’s MASTER (Meteoroid and Space Debris Terrestrial Environment Reference) and DELTA resources address a different class of problem from pass prediction. They are intended for debris-environment, impact-flux, long-term-evolution and collision-risk analysis. ESA makes MASTER available free through the Space Debris User Portal and describes DELTA as a modelling tool for analysing the debris environment and its evolution.
What these models answer
- How debris is distributed by size, altitude, inclination and source.
- Expected impact flux for a spacecraft or protected surface.
- How fragmentation and launch activity affect the long-term environment.
- How mitigation or removal scenarios could change future risk.
They are not substitutes for a live “what is overhead?” map. Their strength is statistical and engineering analysis, where a population model is more informative than following one catalog object.
What public catalogs can and cannot show
A satellite map can look comprehensive while still omitting most small debris. ESA’s Space Debris FAQ says routine ground-based radar and optical measurements can track and catalogue objects larger than about 5–10 cm in low orbit and larger than about 0.3–1.0 m in geostationary orbit, roughly 36,000 km above the equator. Smaller fragments may exist without an individual public catalog record.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThis detection threshold explains why a “debris tracker” cannot display every dangerous particle. A catalog object is one that has been detected, identified and maintained well enough for an orbit solution; it is not a complete census of everything in space.
Historical scale of the debris problem
ESA reports more than 290 in-orbit fragmentation events, more than 2,000 solid-rocket-motor firings and 16 reactor-core ejections in its debris-environment analysis. These are historical event totals cited by ESA, not a count of currently tracked objects.
ESA also states that, as of 2021, more than 6,000 launches had placed around 10,000 satellites into orbit; about 6,000 remained in space and roughly 3,900 were still operational. Those figures provide historical context and should not be confused with a current SATCAT total.

How to choose by job
“I want to see satellites from my backyard.”
Use Heavens-Above first, with N2YO as a second opinion. Set the exact location, select a date, and prioritize high-elevation evening or morning passes. Confirm darkness and illumination conditions rather than relying on a pass time alone.
“I need to identify an object on a map.”
Use N2YO for an interactive view, then verify the identifier and orbital record in CelesTrak SATCAT. This two-step check reduces the chance of confusing similarly named or closely deployed spacecraft.
“I am writing a script.”
Use the N2YO API when you need an application-friendly response containing future positions or ground tracks. Use CelesTrak feeds when your program needs catalog-oriented orbital data. Save retrieval timestamps and object identifiers with every result.
“I operate an amateur-radio station.”
Use Gpredict for a persistent desktop display and orbit predictions, with freshly updated elements. Keep a browser tracker available for a quick cross-check when a pass appears early or late.
“I need debris or collision analysis.”
Use ESA MASTER and DELTA, not a consumer pass map. Their modelling approach is intended for environment and impact-flux questions that cannot be answered by following one visible object.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Define the observer: enter latitude, longitude and, where supported, altitude.
- Identify the object: record the catalog number or other unambiguous identifier.
- Check element age: note when the orbital data were issued or retrieved.
- Set the visibility criteria: choose a minimum elevation and account for daylight, shadow and sky brightness.
- Compare when stakes are high: check the result in a second service using the same location and date.
- Refresh before acting: update elements shortly before an observation, radio contact or automated display.
Common failure modes and fixes
The predicted pass is early or late
Refresh the orbital elements and verify the observer location. A stale element set, a rounded city location or atmospheric-drag changes can move a low-orbit prediction.
Best Value
The object appears under the wrong name
Use the catalog identifier, not only the popular name. Check the record in SATCAT and compare the orbital period and inclination with the object you intended to follow.
The map shows an object that cannot be seen
Geometric visibility is not visual visibility. Check whether the object is sunlit, whether your sky is dark enough and whether its predicted brightness is adequate for unaided eyes or your equipment.
Two services disagree about a CubeSat
Closely deployed CubeSats can be difficult for tracking radars to distinguish, according to NASA. Compare identifiers, element epochs and the time of the deployment before deciding that one map is necessarily wrong.
You cannot find a small debris fragment
The fragment may be below routine detection thresholds or not yet assigned a maintained public orbit. ESA’s size limits explain why a public catalog does not represent every piece of debris.
Freshness, uncertainty and responsible use
Always attach a date and time to a prediction. “Current position” is meaningful only relative to the element set and propagation time. For an educational map, a modest refresh interval may be adequate. For radio operations, optical campaigns or any safety-related analysis, use the newest available data and make the uncertainty visible to users.
Do not interpret a public tracker as an operational collision-warning service. Collision assessment requires specialized data, covariance information, screening processes and expert interpretation beyond a consumer map. MASTER and DELTA can support environment-level studies, while individual conjunction decisions belong to organizations with authoritative tracking and mission data.
Bottom line
Use Heavens-Above or N2YO for seeing what may pass over your location. Use CelesTrak SATCAT for the underlying catalog and orbital elements, the N2YO API for a small tracking application, and Gpredict for desktop or amateur-radio work. Turn to ESA MASTER and DELTA when the question is debris populations, impact flux or long-term collision risk. Check data age and object identity every time: a tracker predicts from an imperfect, changing catalog, and public records cannot include every small fragment.
