OBS Studio is the best free starting point for looping a sermon recording on a 24/7 YouTube stream: use a Media Source for one file, or a VLC Video source for an ordered playlist. The trade-off is that your computer, power and internet connection must stay available for the broadcast. If you want the stream to run without a computer at church left on, StreamNeo is a cloud option for uploaded videos.
Which free tool should you use?
- One recording: OBS Studio’s Media Source, with Loop enabled.
- A rotation of recordings: OBS Studio’s VLC Video source, with playlist looping enabled. VLC must also be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
OBS is free and open source under GPLv2, with no watermark or usage limitation according to the OBS Project. YouTube also lists OBS among no-charge encoder software options. OBS is the clearest free recommendation here because its documentation describes the file-looping controls directly.
Set up a sermon loop in OBS
Loop a single sermon recording
- Install OBS Studio. Open the OBS Help Portal if you need its setup or troubleshooting guidance: OBS Help Portal. The Auto Configuration Wizard is a reasonable starting point for basic settings.
- Add the file as a Media Source. In the OBS Sources panel, select the add button, choose Media Source, and create a new source. Browse to the sermon recording. OBS documents support for formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI and WebM.
- Enable looping. In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. Check that the video and any audio play as expected before going live.
Rotate several recordings
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. Match architectures: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add a VLC Video source. In OBS Sources, add VLC Video and add the sermon recordings to its playlist in the order you want them played.
- Check playlist looping and transitions. OBS documents Loop Playlist as enabled by default. Preview each item and transition; do not assume a playlist is ready until you have checked every file.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes these controls; it is dated January 11, 2022. Consult the current OBS interface if a label or option has changed: OBS Media Sources.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Prepare the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live stream. For a channel’s first live stream, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours, so allow time before a service or event.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. In the broadcast’s encoder settings in Live Control Room, copy the connection details.
- Enter them in OBS. Open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream URL and key if the selected connection flow asks for them.
- Start the encoder and verify the feed. Start streaming from OBS, then confirm the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before relying on the broadcast.
Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it in a screen share, recording or public post. YouTube’s current connection instructions and encoder listings are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Settings and checks that matter
Do not copy a bitrate number from an old tutorial as if it were universal. YouTube’s recommended encoder settings can change and depend on the resolution and connection you intend to use. Check YouTube’s current guidance for your chosen output, and confirm that the church’s upload connection can sustain it. OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard can help establish a starting configuration, but verify the result in YouTube’s preview.
- Play every file from beginning to end, including the end of one recording and start of the next.
- Check that audio is audible, synchronized and not unexpectedly silent between items.
- Keep backup media available and monitor stream health, especially during the first full playlist cycle. These are workflow checks recommended by the Looping Stream guide, not guarantees of uninterrupted operation.
- Disable sleep or automatic restarts on the host computer if they would interrupt the broadcast, and ensure the network path and power remain available.
Free alternatives and the local-versus-cloud choice
Other no-charge encoder options
YouTube’s encoder page also lists PRISM Live Studio as a no-charge option with streaming features, and Streamlabs with no-charge features such as alerts, shortcuts, tipping and overlays. The cited listings do not document a specific 24/7 prerecorded-sermon looping workflow for either, so OBS remains the better-supported choice for this use. YouTube’s page also lists Gyre as a cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded-stream service, but does not identify it as free; check its current pricing and plan limits before choosing it.

What changes when OBS runs locally
| Approach | Where encoding runs | Computer at church must stay on? | Cost information established here |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS with Media Source or VLC playlist | Your computer | Yes; the computer, power and internet connection must remain available. | OBS is free to use under GPLv2, with no watermark or usage limitation, according to the OBS Project. |
| Cloud-hosted 24/7 streaming | A provider’s cloud service | No, once the stream is configured with a hosted service. | Pricing and free-plan limits for other providers are not established by the cited sources. |
A dedicated computer is optional, not a requirement: an existing suitable machine can run OBS if the church is willing to keep it available. No particular PC model or specification is established here.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The stream continues from the cloud, so nothing at home or church has to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded video; it does not broadcast a camera feed.

Confirm rights before broadcasting
A church setting does not automatically clear rights to music, images or other third-party material in a sermon recording. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches; it may replace a stream with a placeholder and may interrupt or terminate it if identified material remains. Even licensed material can be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Review the rights for the sermon recording and every embedded work before streaming. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Do not count on one complete archive of a 24/7 stream
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a longer broadcast will be archived in full, so do not treat one continuous 24/7 stream as a guaranteed complete recording. If an archive matters, plan a separate recording or shorter broadcasts.

Fix the usual setup failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The sermon does not repeat. | Media Source Loop is off, or the wrong source type is being used. | For one file, check the Media Source’s Loop property. For multiple files, use VLC Video and check its playlist loop setting. |
| VLC Video is missing in OBS. | VLC is not installed or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC; use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. |
| YouTube does not show an incoming feed. | The stream URL or key is incorrect, or the channel is not yet activated for live streaming. | Recheck the encoder details in Live Control Room and OBS. For a first activation, allow up to 24 hours per YouTube’s stated setup allowance. |
| The broadcast stops unexpectedly. | The local computer slept, restarted, lost power or lost internet; YouTube may also interrupt a stream over identified third-party content. | Check the computer’s power and sleep settings, connection and YouTube stream health. Review copyright notices and resolve rights issues. |
| The stream is live but the playlist stalls or a file fails. | A source file or transition may not behave as expected. | Test every file and transition in OBS before the service, keep backup media available, and monitor the first complete playlist cycle. |
