Best Free Tools for Designing Custom Gift Vouchers and Tickets

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adobe Express is the best first stop for most free voucher and ticket projects. It has dedicated gift-certificate and ticket makers, lets you begin with a template or blank canvas, and documents editing, downloading, printing and online sharing. Open Adobe Express’s gift certificate maker for vouchers or its ticket template collection for admission-style designs.

Canva is a strong ticket-focused alternative, VistaCreate is a broader free design editor, and VistaPrint is an optional paid route when you need finished physical copies. “Free” applies to the starting service or workflow, not necessarily every template, image, font, export option or print order, so check the selected elements and current plan terms before you finish.

Which free tool should you use?

Choose the tool according to the thing you need to produce, not simply the size of its template library. A one-off birthday voucher, a set of branded certificates, a phone-friendly event ticket and a professionally printed batch have different requirements.

Tool Best fit What the provider documents Important qualification
Adobe Express Gift vouchers and tickets in one service Dedicated gift certificate maker; ticket templates; template or blank-canvas start; editable text and visual elements; download; ticket printing and online sharing The pages do not establish current file-format, resolution, free-asset or free-tier limits.
Canva Ticket designs with drag-and-drop editing Ticket templates; changes to colors, fonts, images and other elements; download or sharing; a barcode generator is described A generated barcode is not automatically a validated admission-control system. Asset and export restrictions depend on the current interface and plan.
VistaCreate Adapting a general-purpose design editor Free Starter tier, template-based editor and selected print formats that can be sent to VistaPrint The surfaced information is a general overview, not a dedicated voucher or ticket workflow.
VistaPrint Ordering finished physical vouchers or tickets Customizable gift cards, tickets and vouchers; choose a template or upload your own design This is a paid physical-production option, not a free design tool.

No like-for-like test establishes which service is fastest, produces the sharpest files or offers the most generous free tier. The comparison above reflects each provider’s own documented workflow. Before investing time in a design, verify the current plan, asset licensing, export choices and dimensions shown in your account.

Adobe Express: the most complete free starting point

Adobe Express is the clearest match when you want both a gift voucher and a ticket without learning two different editors. Its gift-certificate page describes a free maker that starts from a template or blank design. You can replace the wording, adjust visual elements, add branding and download the finished certificate. Its ticket pages describe editable ticket templates and a free ticket maker, with options to download, print or share online.

Make a gift voucher

  1. Open the gift certificate maker and decide whether a ready-made template or a blank canvas gives you the right starting structure.
  2. Replace the sample copy with the actual offer: recipient name, what the voucher covers, value or quantity, issuing business or person, redemption instructions and any expiry or booking details that apply.
  3. Adjust colors, typography, images and other visual elements so the important terms have clear hierarchy. Add a logo or other branding only if you have permission to use it.
  4. Read the design at the size in which the recipient will see it. Check spelling, dates, currency symbols, contact details and every condition before exporting.
  5. Download the design using the export choices currently offered in your account. Keep an editable master if you expect to issue the same voucher again.

The tool creates the artwork; it does not define your redemption policy. If a business issues the voucher, separately decide whether it is transferable, whether unused value is refundable, how customers book, and which legal or consumer disclosures apply in the relevant jurisdiction.

Make a ticket

  1. Open the ticket template collection and select a layout that leaves enough room for the event name, date, time, location, holder information and instructions.
  2. Edit the text and visual elements. Keep the most important entry information together rather than hiding it in decorative copy.
  3. Choose the delivery method before finalizing the canvas. Adobe documents downloading, printing and online sharing, but the exact file type, dimensions and resolution available to you should be confirmed in the export panel.
  4. For a digital ticket, view the result on a phone at ordinary brightness and zoom. For a home-printed ticket, print one proof and check that text remains legible after trimming or folding.
  5. Distribute the downloaded file or printed copy using the channel you selected. Keep a source file separate from any version that contains an individual ticket number.

Canva: a practical choice for ticket layouts

Canva’s dedicated ticket maker is documented as a template-based workflow with drag-and-drop editing. It lets you change colors, fonts, images and other design elements, then download or share the result. That makes it particularly convenient when the main job is arranging an event ticket rather than writing a formal gift-certificate document.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ticket workflow

  1. Open the ticket maker and choose a template whose proportions and information areas resemble your event.
  2. Drag in the elements you need, then replace the sample colors, fonts, images and wording. Keep the event identity visually distinct from the practical entry instructions.
  3. Check every selected element for a paid marker or other plan restriction before you commit to the layout. A design can begin in a free editor while still containing an asset that requires payment or changes the export experience.
  4. Use the download or sharing controls shown for your account. Confirm the resulting size and quality against the way guests will receive the ticket.

What the barcode option does and does not mean

Canva’s page mentions a barcode generator. Treat that as a design feature unless you have separately connected the code to an event-registration or point-of-sale system. A barcode printed on a ticket is not proof that the ticket is unique, cannot be copied or will scan at the door. If entry control matters, choose the numbering, database, scanner and duplicate-use rules first, then test the complete process with the device and software used at the event.

VistaCreate: a flexible general design editor

VistaCreate presents a free Starter tier and a template-based graphic-design editor. It can be useful when you want to adapt a general design service for a voucher, invitation or ticket, especially if you already use its editor for other materials. The information available for it is a broad product overview rather than a dedicated voucher or ticket-maker guide, so confirm that the current template search and export controls support the exact layout you need.

How to evaluate it for your project

  1. Start in the free Starter tier and search the current templates for the format closest to your voucher or ticket.
  2. Check whether the individual template, fonts, photographs and illustrations are included in that tier. Do not infer that every result is free from the existence of a free plan.
  3. Build a small test design before recreating a complex branded set. Confirm that the text areas, imagery and export settings behave as expected.
  4. If you want a print order, note that VistaCreate describes sending selected print formats to VistaPrint. Review the order price and proof separately; sending a design to a printer is not part of the free design service.

VistaPrint: when you need physical copies

VistaPrint is relevant after the design stage. Its page for custom gift cards, tickets and loyalty cards says you can choose a template or upload your own design, then order physical pieces. That is useful for a business or event organizer who does not want to print and cut every copy at home, but it is not a free alternative to the design editors above.

You can create the artwork in Adobe Express, Canva or another editor, then compare the printer’s current specifications with your file before uploading. Check the required dimensions, acceptable file type, proofing process, quantity and delivery cost in the order flow. The cited product page does not establish a universal price, turnaround time, paper stock or finish, so those details must be confirmed for your location and order.

Phone or mobile wallet-style sharing

  • Use a layout that remains readable on a narrow screen without requiring constant zooming.
  • Put the event name, date, time and redemption instruction near the top so a recipient can find them quickly.
  • Preview the exported file on more than one screen size if the design will be shared broadly.
  • Keep a plain-text backup of the essential details in the delivery message. A decorative design should not be the only copy of a booking time or address.

Email or messaging attachments

  • Confirm the export produces a file that your recipients can open on their devices.
  • Use a descriptive filename and, for individualized vouchers, keep the recipient or internal reference in your own records rather than exposing unnecessary personal information in the filename.
  • Send a test to yourself before issuing a batch. Check that the attachment is present, the text is not clipped and links or contact details, if used, are correct.

Home printing

  • Print a proof at the intended physical size rather than judging only the editor preview.
  • Check margins, contrast, folding or cutting lines and the legibility of small conditions.
  • Adobe documents ticket printing, but it does not prescribe a particular paper weight, printer, finish or cutting tool. Select supplies based on your printer and the physical result you need.

Professional printing

  • Ask the printer which dimensions, file formats, color settings and bleed requirements it accepts before you export.
  • Review a proof and total delivered cost, including shipping and any minimum quantity.
  • If you use VistaPrint, either select one of its current templates or upload your finished design, then follow the product-specific proofing and ordering steps.

What “free” really covers

A free entry point does not establish that every component is free. Template collections commonly mix included and paid items, and the available download options can change with the plan, account type or selected asset. Exact current limits for the services in this article are not stated on the cited pages, so check the interface at the moment you export.

  • Look for a paid or premium indicator on every image, font, illustration, template and effect you keep.
  • Make a copy and replace any restricted element before spending time on fine alignment.
  • Confirm whether the export you need is available without a watermark or payment prompt.
  • Read the asset license for commercial use, especially when a business will sell or honor the voucher.
  • Recheck the plan and asset status if you return to the design later; a template or feature can be subject to current product terms.

These checks are more reliable than assuming that a service described as free includes unlimited projects, every format or unrestricted commercial rights.

Build the information into the design

A polished voucher or ticket still fails if the recipient cannot tell what it is or how to use it. Before opening an editor, write the content in plain text and group it by priority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gift voucher content checklist

  • Clear name of the experience, product or service.
  • Recipient or “to” line, if the voucher is personal.
  • Value, quantity or specific entitlement.
  • Issuing person or business and a contact method.
  • How to redeem, including booking or reservation instructions.
  • Expiration date or statement that no expiry applies, where relevant.
  • Restrictions such as blackout dates, exclusions, transferability or partial redemption, if you impose them.
  • Internal reference or serial number if you need to reconcile redemptions.

The design tool cannot decide whether those terms are lawful or enforceable. Have the issuer review the wording for the country or state where the voucher will be sold or honored.

Ticket content checklist

  • Event or venue name.
  • Date, start time and any door-opening time.
  • Location and entry instructions.
  • Ticket type, section, seat or admission category when applicable.
  • Holder name or order reference if you use one.
  • Contact information for changes, cancellations or accessibility questions.
  • Numbering or a validated code only when your admission process can use it.

Make tickets usable without pretending they are secure credentials

A visual ticket is an invitation or proof-of-purchase layout, not automatically a security system. A copied PDF, screenshot or printed duplicate can look identical to the original unless your event process checks identity, order data or a one-time code.

If you need controlled entry, define the operational rules outside the editor: how each ticket receives a unique identifier, where identifiers are stored, which device scans or checks them, what happens after first use, and how staff handle a failed scan or a duplicate. Test several legitimate tickets, an already-used ticket and an intentionally invalid code before the event. Only describe a ticket as scannable or validated if that complete workflow has been implemented and tested.

A repeatable workflow for a branded set

  1. Write the rules first. Decide the offer, dates, redemption method, refund or transfer policy and the information staff must see.
  2. Select the destination. Choose mobile, email, home print or a professional print order, then identify the size and export requirements.
  3. Pick the editor. Use Adobe Express for a directly documented voucher-and-ticket workflow, Canva for a ticket-centered drag-and-drop layout, VistaCreate for a general editor, or a paid printer when production is the main need.
  4. Create one master. Keep essential text editable and separate decorative elements from terms that may change.
  5. Replace restricted assets. Check each template component, font, image and export control before duplicating the design.
  6. Proof at the destination. View a phone version on a phone, open an attachment from a test account, or print a physical proof. For professional production, obtain the printer’s proof.
  7. Personalize and track. Add recipient names, references or validated identifiers only after the master is approved. Maintain a private issuance list if the voucher or ticket has monetary value.
  8. Distribute safely. Send each recipient the correct file, protect internal records and provide a contact route for corrections.

Troubleshooting common problems

A supposedly free design asks for payment

Identify the exact object triggering the prompt. Replace that template, image, font or effect with an item marked as included in your current plan, or remove it and retest the export. Do not assume that paying for one element is the only way to keep the rest of the project free; rebuild the affected portion if necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The printed result is clipped or hard to read

Return to the output size specified by your printer or intended paper. Move critical text inward, enlarge small conditions, increase contrast and print another proof. If you are ordering physical copies, use the printer’s required dimensions and proofing process instead of relying solely on the editor preview.

The file looks fine in the editor but not on a phone

Open the downloaded file on the smallest common screen you expect. Simplify crowded areas, enlarge the event or redemption details and reduce decorative text. Send a test attachment through the same channel recipients will use.

A barcode will not scan

First establish whether the code encodes valid data and whether the scanner or service recognizes that format. Then test the printed or displayed version under the lighting and distance used at entry. A barcode generator inside a design editor does not provide the database, uniqueness checks or scanner integration needed for admission control.

Several vouchers have inconsistent branding

Return to one approved master, duplicate it inside the editor and change only the variable fields. Keep a record of the version used for each issue. This prevents late edits to colors or terms from producing a mixed batch.
