Microsoft treats this as a title-level setting: free-to-play games, demos and betas can be configured to allow multiplayer for players who are not subscribers. Always open the individual Microsoft Store listing before installing, because account requirements, age ratings, regions, supported modes and publisher restrictions vary.

How Xbox subscription-free multiplayer works
Microsoft’s Xbox requirements allow a qualifying free-to-play title to enable online multiplayer for accounts without an Xbox Game Pass subscription. The rule applies to the specific game, not automatically to every product that appears in a free-games search.
- Free-to-play multiplayer: The base download and its online modes can be used without a subscription when the publisher has enabled that configuration.
- Paid games: A game that requires purchase does not become subscription-free simply because it has an online mode.
- Demos and betas: These can also be configured for no-subscription multiplayer, but access may end when the test period closes.
- Store verification: Check the game’s own listing for Xbox account, age, regional, publisher-account and mode restrictions before you install.
Free access does not mean every feature is free. Most of these games sell optional cosmetics, characters, currency, season passes, expansions or other in-game items.

The Microsoft Store’s current “Top free Online multiplayer Games on Xbox for Xbox Live” snapshot contains 147 items. The list changes, so treat it as a discovery tool rather than a permanent guarantee that every entry will remain available or keep the same modes.
Battle royale and large competitive matches
Fortnite
Fortnite is the broadest starting point for a group that wants a major free-to-play multiplayer game. The catalog includes Fortnite, Fortnite Battle Royale and Fortnite OG as separate entries, so select the version and modes your group actually wants. The Store page is the place to confirm the current Xbox edition and any account or age requirements.
Call of Duty: Warzone
Warzone is the free-to-play branch of the Call of Duty ecosystem and is suited to players who want a more traditional military-shooter battle royale. Its presence in a Store search does not by itself prove that every mode or feature is subscription-free; verify the current product page and the specific mode before downloading.

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is another battle-royale option in the free catalog. It favors a more deliberate survival match than arcade-style alternatives. Check the listing for the current Xbox version, supported modes and any account requirements.
Apex Legends
Apex Legends combines squad battle royale play with hero abilities. It is a good fit when your group wants team roles and fast movement, but the available characters, playlists and monetization can change as the live service is updated.
Battlefield REDSEC
Battlefield REDSEC appears among the Store’s explicitly free entries and targets players who prefer large combat spaces and squad play. Confirm its current availability and mode list in the Store because live-service products can change or leave a catalog.
Hero and arena shooters
Halo Infinite
Halo Infinite has the clearest platform documentation in this group. Xbox describes its multiplayer as “free-to-play” and lists online multiplayer for 2–24 players. The product page specifies Xbox cross-platform multiplayer and support for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Xbox Game Studios is the publisher, 343 Industries is the developer, and the listed release date is November 15, 2021.

You can therefore use Halo Infinite’s qualifying multiplayer without a subscription, while still checking the Store listing for the modes and account settings available to your console and region.
Marvel Rivals
Marvel Rivals is a hero-based team shooter in the Store’s free list. It suits groups that want character abilities and objective play rather than a traditional military loadout. Because hero rosters, playlists and platform support can change, use the current listing to confirm the version and any required publisher account.
Overwatch
Overwatch is listed among the catalog’s free-to-play multiplayer choices. It is built around team composition and hero roles, making it useful for a group willing to coordinate. The Store can show different product labels or Game Pass-related merchandising, so verify the individual free-to-play listing before assuming a particular mode is available.
The Finals
The Finals focuses on competitive objective matches and destructible arenas. It is a strong choice when your group wants short, high-action rounds. Match formats and progression systems are live-service features; check the current Xbox page for the modes offered in your region.

Destiny 2
Destiny 2 provides a free base experience with cooperative missions and competitive activities. Paid expansions, season passes and other optional purchases sit alongside that base access, so identify which content your group owns before planning a session.
Warframe
Warframe is a long-running cooperative action game with persistent progression. It works well for players who want repeatable missions and character development rather than isolated matches. The free download does not imply that every item or expansion is included.
Genshin Impact
Genshin Impact is a free-to-play action RPG with an explorable world and optional cooperative play. Online features can have progression or account requirements, and the game’s extensive optional purchases make it important to set spending controls for younger players.

The First Descendant

Trackmania
Trackmania is the racing pick for time-trial competition and repeatable courses. The Store listing should be your reference for the current Xbox version and which online events are included in free access.
Disney Speedstorm
Disney Speedstorm provides an approachable kart-racing option. It is a natural choice for mixed-skill groups, but check age ratings, current events and optional purchases before handing the controller to a child.
Social, party and family-friendly options
Roblox
Roblox is a platform containing many user-created experiences rather than one fixed game. That variety makes it easy to find social or competitive activities, but parents should review each experience’s age rating, chat controls and privacy settings.
Fall Guys and Stumble Guys
Fall Guys and Stumble Guys use short obstacle-course rounds and simple controls. They are good choices when players have different skill levels or only have time for a few matches. Current playlists and party limits can change, so verify the Store and in-game menus.

Fishing Planet
Fishing Planet offers a slower, activity-based multiplayer alternative. It suits friends who want to talk while playing rather than compete in rapid rounds. Check the listing for the current online features and any age or account restrictions.
Pool Blitz
Pool Blitz provides a straightforward cue-sports option for small groups. Confirm the supported multiplayer mode and any input requirements before inviting players on different devices.
More free entries worth checking
The same Store snapshot explicitly labels several other products as free: Delta Force, Vigor, MY HERO ULTRA RUMBLE, Pixel Strike 3D, Hamster Playground and Blindfire. They broaden the list with additional shooter, battle, arena and party styles. The catalog also includes It Takes Two – Friend’s Pass, but that product is companion access for a player joining the paid game; it is not the complete paid game itself.
Fishing Planet, Pool Blitz, 3on3 FreeStyle and Hamster Playground can be useful when your group wants something less demanding than a competitive shooter. Delta Force, Vigor, MY HERO ULTRA RUMBLE, Pixel Strike 3D and Blindfire are better suited to players specifically looking for combat-focused sessions. Use each title’s own listing to confirm its current modes and availability.

Start with the session length
For ten-minute rounds, choose Fall Guys, Stumble Guys, Pool Blitz or a racing event. For a longer evening with ongoing progression, Destiny 2, Warframe, Genshin Impact or The First Descendant are better fits.
Match the coordination burden
Hero shooters and squad battle royales reward voice communication and role awareness. Social games and party racers are easier to join without a fixed team strategy. Agree on that expectation before downloading a large game.

Check cross-play instead of assuming it
Halo Infinite is explicitly documented as supporting Xbox cross-platform multiplayer across Xbox and PC. Do not generalize that statement to every other title. If one friend is on PC or another Xbox generation, open the game’s current Store page and publisher documentation to verify cross-play.

Review input and accessibility needs
Look for the listing’s controller, keyboard, mouse and accessibility details if players use different setups. Support can vary by title and platform, and the free-to-play rule does not guarantee identical input options.
Set expectations about purchases
Free-to-play games commonly sell cosmetic items, characters, currency, season passes or expansions. Use Xbox family, privacy and spending controls where appropriate, and explain to children that downloading a game does not make every item inside it free.
Game Pass benefits are optional extras
Xbox Wire announced on March 26, 2025 that Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members would receive in-game benefits for selected free-to-play games. Examples named in that announcement include The Finals, Warzone, Enlisted, War Thunder, Overwatch 2, League of Legends, Valorant and Genshin Impact.
Those benefits can include cosmetics, characters, currency or progression advantages. They are separate from the platform rule that allows qualifying free-to-play multiplayer without a subscription. A Store result marked “Included with Game Pass” therefore should not be treated as proof that a subscription is required for the underlying free-to-play multiplayer; verify the individual title page.
Steps to start playing without a subscription
- Open the Microsoft Store on Xbox. Search for the exact game, not just a franchise or a similarly named companion product.
- Read the product page. Confirm that the base title is labeled free and inspect the online-multiplayer, age, region and account information.
- Install the correct edition. Avoid assuming that a beta, add-on or Friend’s Pass is the complete game.
- Sign in with the intended Xbox account. Child accounts may have communication, privacy or spending limits that affect matchmaking.
- Complete any publisher-account link. Some games require an additional account; the Store or the first launch screen should identify it.
- Review cross-play and party settings. Enable them only when they match your group’s devices and preferences.
- Launch an online mode. If the game asks for a subscription despite being listed as free-to-play, recheck that you installed the correct product and that the selected mode is included.
Common problems and fixes
The game asks for Game Pass
Check whether you selected a paid edition, an expansion or a mode that is not part of the free-to-play configuration. A “Included with Game Pass” label can describe catalog distribution rather than a requirement for the free base multiplayer. Return to the game’s own Store page and confirm its free listing.
A friend cannot join
Compare console generation, region, age settings, privacy permissions and publisher-account status. Cross-play is title-specific; Halo Infinite’s documented support should not be assumed for another game.
A mode has disappeared
Live-service games rotate playlists and events. Check the in-game announcements and current Store description before reinstalling or changing account settings.

Chat or invitations do not work
Review Xbox communication permissions, child-account restrictions and the game’s own voice-chat controls. Roblox and other social platforms may apply additional experience-level moderation or privacy settings.
The download is free but spending continues
Free-to-play access covers the qualifying game and online mode, not optional purchases. Set a purchase PIN or family spending limit and disable payment methods on accounts that should not buy content.
Catalog and availability caveats
The 147-item Store snapshot is dated and can change. A title may leave Xbox, alter its modes, change cross-play behavior, add a publisher-account requirement or impose a regional or age restriction. Use the individual listing immediately before installation, especially for live-service games and products shown under a Game Pass filter.
