OBS Studio is the best free option for looping a prerecorded video into a YouTube Live stream from your own computer. Use its built-in Media Source with Loop enabled for one file; for a playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video Source with Loop Playlist enabled and install VLC. OBS is free, open-source software with no watermark or usage limits, but a local setup still depends on your computer, power and internet staying available.
Which free software should you use?
OBS Studio for a single video
OBS Studio is the clearest fit when you want to broadcast a prerecorded file at no software cost. OBS describes the software as open source under GPLv2 and free to use for any reason, without watermarks or usage limitations. Its Media Source can play video and audio files and includes a Loop control that restarts a file after playback. OBS Media Sources and OBS licensing
OBS with VLC Video Source for a playlist
If you want several files to play in sequence, add a VLC Video Source in OBS and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed separately; on 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. This is a different playback path from Media Source, which is suited to a single file. OBS lists supported common media formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV. Check your selected file in OBS before going live, since an extension alone does not guarantee a particular file will play correctly.
What you need before starting in India
- A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
- You must meet YouTube’s minimum age requirement to livestream: 16 years old. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
- OBS Studio, the video file or files you intend to play, and VLC if you are using a VLC Video Source playlist.
- A stable local computer and internet connection for the full broadcast. The loop setting repeats playback; it does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
- Permission to use the video and audio. Your stream must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
How to loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live with OBS
- Enable livestreaming. In YouTube Studio, follow the live-streaming setup instructions and wait for activation if this is your channel’s first time. YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Add the playback source in OBS. For one file, add a Media Source, select the file and enable Loop. For a playlist, add VLC Video Source, select the files and enable Loop Playlist. Install VLC first if it is not already installed; match its 64-bit version to 64-bit OBS.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Choose YouTube as the service, then enter the stream URL and stream key from the Live Control Room, following the fields available in your OBS version. OBS’s streaming workflow and YouTube’s encoder setup are documented in YouTube’s encoder help.
- Check the picture and sound before broadcasting. Start the encoder from OBS, then inspect the Live Control Room preview. Confirm the correct source is playing, audio is present at a sensible level, and the image is not blank or frozen. Start the public broadcast from YouTube Studio when the preview is ready, if the stream is configured to require that step.
- Monitor while live. Keep OBS and the YouTube Live Control Room available and check audio and video quality during the broadcast. A looping source does not by itself keep a stream alive if the computer loses power, OBS closes or the connection fails. YouTube recommends monitoring the stream’s audio and video quality. Choose settings for the file you have
For this workflow, the essential configuration is the playback source and YouTube’s stream URL and key. The supplied official guidance establishes the loop and connection steps, but does not give a single bitrate, resolution or keyframe setting that is right for every file and connection. Avoid copying a bitrate blindly: the required upload capacity depends on the output resolution and frame rate, and your internet connection must sustain the encoder’s outgoing feed.

- Use the file’s intended playback orientation and resolution; inspect the YouTube preview rather than assuming OBS is sending the expected image.
- Set OBS output and video settings to match what your computer and connection can sustain. If the preview stutters or YouTube reports an unstable connection, reduce output demands or improve the connection before relying on a long broadcast.
- For file playback, a webcam and microphone are not necessary unless you want to add live production elements. YouTube supports software encoders as well as standalone hardware encoders; dedicated hardware is not required for the OBS local-file method.
Copyright, archives and YouTube rules
Use material you are allowed to stream
Looping a video does not change its copyright status. Make sure you have permission or a valid license for both the visual material and all audio, including music. YouTube requires streams to follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. A claim or restriction can affect a live broadcast or its replay, so do not assume that a file is safe because it is already on your computer.
Plan around YouTube’s archive window
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you plan to stream for 12 hours or longer, check the current Live Control Room guidance rather than assuming a complete replay will be saved. YouTube live streaming help

Common problems and fixes
- Livestreaming is unavailable: verify the channel and enable live streaming. Check whether the channel has had a live-streaming restriction during the previous 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- The YouTube preview is blank: confirm the correct Media Source or VLC Video Source is selected, the file path is still accessible and the file plays in OBS. Re-select the file if it was moved.
- The video stops instead of repeating: open the source properties and enable Loop for Media Source, or Loop Playlist for VLC Video Source.
- A playlist source is missing or will not load: install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: check that OBS is configured with the stream URL and current stream key shown in the correct Live Control Room stream. If you regenerate the key, update OBS with the new one.
- The stream is unstable or the quality drops: check the YouTube preview and OBS status, then reduce output demands or address the computer or connection bottleneck. The local workflow relies on the machine and network remaining available.
- Audio is missing or unexpectedly loud: inspect the source’s audio and OBS mixer meters, then verify the sound in the YouTube preview before starting the public broadcast.
