There is no single winner for every workflow. Decide whether you mainly need a fast image, a long webpage, searchable text, redaction, video, or a share link. “Free” can mean included forever, free for personal use, a limited tier, or a trial, so check the current license before installing a third-party app.
Apple Screenshot: the dependable free default

Capture the entire screen

Capture a window
- Open the Screenshot toolbar.
- Select Capture Selected Window.
- Move the pointer over a window and click.
macOS generally includes the window’s shadow. Hold Option while clicking if you want to suppress the shadow.
Capture a region
- Choose Capture Selected Portion.
- Drag the frame around the area.
- Drag its edges to refine the selection, then click Capture.
For a one-step selection without opening the toolbar, press Shift–Command–4. Press Escape before releasing the mouse or trackpad to cancel.
Record the screen
The same toolbar offers Record Entire Screen and Record Selected Portion. Open Options to choose a microphone, show the pointer, set a timer, and select the save location. Click the stop button in the menu bar (or press Command–Control–Escape) to finish.
Use the floating thumbnail
After a capture, a thumbnail appears briefly in the lower-right corner. Drag it into a document or message before it disappears, or click it to crop, rotate, mark up, and share. Control-click the thumbnail for additional save and delete actions. To disable it permanently, open the toolbar’s Options menu and turn off Show Floating Thumbnail.

Change format, destination, and timer
In Options, choose Desktop, Documents, Clipboard, Mail, Messages, Preview, or another location under Save to. You can also set a five- or 10-second timer and toggle the pointer. For file format and compression, open the saved image in Preview and export as PNG, JPEG, or another supported format.
Where Apple Screenshot is limited
- Annotation: Markup is available after capture, but it is not a persistent, screenshot-focused workspace.

Troubleshooting common Mac screenshot problems
The shortcut does nothing
Open System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → Screenshots and re-enable the commands or assign unused shortcuts. A managed Mac may enforce different shortcuts through an administrator profile.
The image is saved somewhere unexpected
Press Shift–Command–5, open Options, and inspect Save to. If you chose Clipboard, paste into Preview or an editor and save manually.

Bring the window to the front, wait for its contents to finish drawing, and capture again. For protected video or other content that intentionally blocks capture, use the provider’s export feature; do not attempt to bypass content protection.
Scrolling capture is incomplete
Use Shottr or CleanShot X for a dedicated scrolling mode, and let lazy-loaded content finish before capturing. Fixed headers, infinite-scroll feeds, and cross-origin frames can still require several shorter captures or the site’s print view.

OCR is inaccurate
Capture at native or Retina resolution, avoid scaling text down, and crop away decorative backgrounds. Check the result against the original before using extracted text in a record or specification.
