Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The best free MCP server depends on what you want an AI application to do. For local files, start with a scoped Filesystem server; for repository work, consider GitHub MCP; for browser interaction, consider Playwright MCP. For databases and web search, Postgres-oriented servers and Brave Search MCP are candidates. These are starting points, not a tested ranking: check each project’s current documentation, permissions, maintenance, and any account or usage costs before connecting it.
What an MCP server does—and what “free” means
Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers connect AI applications to external tools and data through a client-server interface. A server can give an AI client access to a defined set of capabilities, such as searching the web, inspecting files, or working with a repository. What it can actually do depends on the server, its configuration, the client, and the permissions you grant.
“Free” is not one pricing model. It may mean free software you run locally, a hosted service that does not require a key, or a free account tier with limits. Even when the server software is free, its connected service may require an account, API key, or paid usage. Confirm the current terms and limits for both the server and the underlying service before relying on it.
Best free MCP servers by task
Choose by the work you need the AI client to perform, rather than by a directory label or a general-purpose “best” ranking. The candidates below are identified in third-party comparison material and a curated catalog; they have not been verified here through hands-on installation or current vendor-by-vendor checks.
#1 Best Overall
Scoped access to local files: Filesystem MCP
The official Filesystem reference server is described as accepting allowed directories as launch arguments. That lets you define which paths it may access. Check the current project instructions and your MCP client’s configuration format, then allow only the directories needed for the task—not an entire home directory or drive by default.
Before connecting it, verify how the current version handles path boundaries, symbolic links, and write operations. The available sources do not establish those implementation details for every release or client configuration. If file changes are unnecessary, keep access read-focused where the server and client support that restriction.
Repository, issue, and pull-request workflows: GitHub MCP
GitHub MCP is a candidate for work involving repositories, issues, and pull requests. Its practical cost and risk depend on the authentication method and permissions required by the current setup. Review the OAuth or token flow in the official documentation, and grant only the repository and action scopes the task needs. Avoid giving an agent broad organization access merely for convenience.
Before use, check whether the server supports the exact operations you need and whether those operations can modify code, branches, issues, or pull requests. A repository integration is not automatically read-only just because the initial task is to inspect code.

Database inspection and queries: Postgres-oriented MCP servers
A Postgres-oriented server may suit schema inspection and read-focused queries. The comparison source warns that enabling writes changes the risk profile. Confirm which database, schemas, and operations the current server exposes; use a least-privilege database role, and prefer a separate read-only role when the AI only needs to answer questions about data.
Rank #2
Do not connect production credentials until you understand whether the server can execute arbitrary SQL, how it handles query errors, and what data the client can see. Those details vary by implementation and are not established uniformly by the available comparisons.
Browser interaction: Playwright MCP
Playwright MCP is a candidate when an agent needs to interact with a browser rather than only retrieve text. Local browser automation uses the machine’s resources and may reach websites through a logged-in browser session. Treat that session as sensitive: decide which sites the agent can visit, what accounts are signed in, and whether it can submit forms or trigger actions.
If your need is a static website screenshot rather than interactive browsing, an API can be simpler than running browser automation. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, with tools for taking screenshots, getting page information, and capturing PDFs. Its clean-shot workflow accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. It is an alternative to try first for screenshot capture—not a replacement for general browser automation.

Brave Search MCP is one candidate for web-search access. Before calling it free for your intended volume, check whether the current integration needs a separate API account or whether its usage allowance is limited. A free server package does not establish that search requests themselves are unlimited or free.
Other candidates in comparison lists
Third-party guides also list Context7, Supabase MCP, Sentry MCP, Exa MCP, Notion MCP, and Zapier MCP. Their inclusion in a list does not establish their present price, credential requirements, supported operations, maintenance status, or suitability for a particular client. Use the project or vendor documentation to verify those details before adoption.
How to compare MCP servers before connecting one
Use the same criteria for every candidate. This makes it easier to compare a local server with a hosted integration without mistaking “free to install” for “free to operate.”
| Check | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Task fit | Does it expose the specific actions or data your workflow needs, rather than a vaguely similar category? |
| Tool coverage | Are the needed operations available, and can you distinguish read-only actions from actions that change data or trigger external effects? |
| Maintenance | Check recent releases, issue activity, and whether the project or vendor still supports the integration. A catalog listing alone is not proof of ongoing maintenance. |
| Setup and permissions | Are authentication, scope, and client configuration explained clearly? Can access be limited to particular paths, repositories, databases, or services? |
| Stability | Look for documented compatibility and known limitations for your client and environment. A third-party reliability score is not proof of safety or performance. |
| Safety and secrets | Determine how credentials are stored, what the agent can access, and whether write-capable tools can be disabled or constrained. |
| Execution and full cost | Find out whether it runs locally or remotely, what data leaves your machine, whether an account or API key is needed, and what usage limits or service charges apply. |
This framework resembles a five-factor guide that considers maintenance, tool surface, documentation, stability, and safety. It is one guide’s methodology, not a protocol-wide standard. Apply it as a checklist, not as a claim that any candidate has passed an independent audit.
Safer setup: a practical checklist
- Start with the smallest task. Identify the exact data or operation the agent needs. Pick a server that covers that need, not the broadest integration available.
- Find the authoritative setup instructions. Follow the current repository or vendor documentation for the server and your MCP client. Client configuration formats and server requirements can change; do not copy an old configuration snippet without checking it.
- Review authentication and scope. Confirm whether you need an account, API key, OAuth grant, or local credentials. Restrict access to the relevant directories, repositories, database role, or service wherever possible.
- Check write capabilities. Know whether a tool can edit files, change database records, create pull requests, submit forms, or otherwise affect an external system. Disable or limit those actions if the task is read-only.
- Test with non-sensitive data. Confirm the expected tools and permissions in a low-risk environment before granting access to private or production data.
- Recheck after updates. Revisit release notes, permissions, and service terms when the server or client changes. Revoke credentials you no longer need.
Screenshot alternative: capture a page without setting up browser automation
If your requirement is to save a page as an image or PDF, a screenshot API avoids configuring and operating a browser automation stack. ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one GET request and can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output. Its MCP server also lets AI agents—including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients—use screenshot tools.
The API has additional capture controls for full-page screenshots with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device and viewport settings, retina scale, PDF paper size and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, selector waits, delays or network-idle waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agent, timezone, geolocation, caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs, bulk capture, and usage reporting. Check the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the current request parameters and options.
Or skip the browser setup
One GET request can save a screenshot. This cURL example writes a WebP file:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL as needed. The same endpoint can return other supported image formats or a PDF when configured accordingly; consult the API documentation for parameters.

Cost, access, and reliability checks
Calculate cost across the whole workflow, not only the server download. A local open-source package may still call a paid API; a hosted integration may require a service account; a free tier may cap requests or capabilities. Confirm current plan terms with the provider because the comparison material does not establish current prices or limits for the candidates listed here.
Local execution and hosted execution have different trade-offs. Local browser or filesystem tools may access resources available to the machine; hosted services may require sending requests or data to a provider. Establish where credentials and content go before using sensitive material. For community projects, review recent releases and issues and inspect the code where the risk warrants it. Prefer a credible official integration when one exists, but still examine its scopes and terms.

The client does not show the server’s tools
Check that you followed the current configuration instructions for your specific client, that the server can start in its required environment, and that the client has been restarted or refreshed if its instructions require it. Verify the configured executable, arguments, and environment variables against the project documentation rather than borrowing settings for another client.
Authentication fails or access is denied
Check whether the integration requires an account, API key, OAuth authorization, or particular permission scopes. Confirm that the credential is current and belongs to the intended account. If authorization is too broad, create a narrower credential rather than reusing an administrator token.

A file, repository, or database resource is unavailable
Confirm that the server was granted the right path, repository, or database permissions and that the resource is reachable from the server’s execution environment. For local files, compare the allowed directory with the path the agent is requesting. For databases, verify the role and schema access independently of the AI client.
The agent can read data but cannot make a change
That may be intentional: the integration, account, or database role may be read-only, or the requested write operation may not be exposed. Check the current tool list and permission configuration. Do not broaden access until you have confirmed the task truly requires writes and have considered the consequences.
A web search or hosted tool unexpectedly requires payment
Recheck the service’s current account and usage terms. The server may be free while the underlying API is metered, or a free allowance may not cover your volume. Treat pricing in older comparison articles as unverified until confirmed by the provider.

Browser automation reaches a logged-in account
Stop the task if the agent can access more than intended. Review the browser profile and session, sign out or use a separate profile for automation, and limit reachable sites and available actions. Local automation can use the access available to its browser environment.
Final choice
For tightly scoped local files, investigate Filesystem MCP; for repository tasks, GitHub MCP; for database inspection, a carefully permissioned Postgres-oriented server; for interactive websites, Playwright MCP; and for web search, Brave Search MCP. None is universally best or established here as a definitive winner. Select by required capabilities, restrict access, and verify current setup, maintenance, and total cost with the project or service provider.
