Best Free Astro Themes by Site Goal: Docs, Blogs and Landing Pages

The best free Astro theme depends on the job your site must do. Start with Astro’s official theme directory, filter by category, technology and price, then inspect the project repository before you commit. Starlight is a documentation-focused choice; AstroPaper and Cactus suit blogs or personal publishing; AstroWind targets landing and marketing pages. Those are fits suggested by current listings, not a universal ranking.

Choose by the work your site needs to do

A theme is useful only when its content model, navigation and components match your project. A documentation site has different requirements from a personal blog, portfolio or product launch page. Use the shortlist below as a starting point, then verify each project’s current state.

Site goal Candidate Why it may fit Verify before adopting
Documentation Starlight Presented as Astro’s documentation framework, with full-text search, internationalization, sidebar navigation and dark mode. Current Astro compatibility, integrations and how much you need to customize the docs structure.
Blog or personal publishing AstroPaper A dated review describes search, light and dark modes, archives, tags and RSS in a blog-oriented setup. Repository activity, license, styling stack and whether its publishing features match your workflow.
Lightweight personal site or blog Cactus Described with content collections, MDX, search and RSS. Current repository status and whether its deliberately small feature set is sufficient.
Marketing or launch page AstroWind Positioned as a landing and marketing starter. A June 2026 repository check reported Astro v6 and Tailwind CSS v4. Current versions, repository destination, license and whether its page structure fits your funnel.
Portfolio, business, store or another category Astro’s official directory Listings cover blogs, docs, e-commerce, landing pages, portfolios, UI kits and starter projects. Inspect the linked project itself; directory presence does not establish quality, maintenance, licensing or fit.

What counts as a free Astro theme?

“Free Astro theme” is used broadly. Some listings are complete visual themes, while others are documentation frameworks, starter repositories, UI kits or component collections. A free download does not necessarily include free hosting, support or permission for every type of client work. Treat the label as an invitation to inspect the project, not as a guarantee of a finished website.

Astro’s official theme directory supports filters for category, technology and pricing, including free and paid listings. Because listings change, the filter result is a current catalog view rather than a permanent compatibility statement. A separate third-party catalog, Get Astro Themes, reported 362 free resources in its complete collection in August 2026. That number belongs to that catalog and date; Astro did not independently verify it.

How to narrow the directory without wasting time

  1. Define the site’s primary job. Decide whether visitors will read long-form posts, browse documentation, inspect work samples, sign up for a product or complete a purchase. Secondary pages can be added later, but the primary flow should determine the starting template.
  2. Filter by category and technology. Use the official directory’s category, technology and pricing controls. Technology filters matter when you already know whether you need MDX, Tailwind CSS, a particular content approach or an integration.
  3. Open the project repository. Read the README, package requirements, issue tracker, releases and license file. A polished demo can conceal an old dependency stack or a project that is no longer maintained.
  4. Compare the actual file and page structure. List the pages, layouts, content collections, search, feeds, forms and integrations included. Identify what must be removed or rewritten before launch.
  5. Test the project in a throwaway branch. Follow the repository’s own installation instructions and check that the package requirements work with your intended Astro version. Do this before moving your content or changing the visual system.

Four free projects that fit common goals

Starlight for documentation

Starlight is positioned as Astro’s documentation framework rather than a generic blog skin. Its described feature set includes full-text search, internationalization, sidebar navigation and dark mode. Those capabilities address the hard parts of a docs site: finding information, moving through a hierarchy and serving readers in more than one language.

Choose it when documentation is the product’s primary experience. Before adoption, confirm the current Astro release it supports, the search and translation integrations you need, and whether its navigation model can represent your information architecture. A docs framework can be a poor fit for a marketing site whose main goal is a short conversion path.

AstroPaper for a feature-rich blog

AstroPaper is described in a dated review as a blog-focused project with search, light and dark modes, archives, tags and RSS. That combination is useful for writers who need more than a chronological list of posts. Tags and archives help readers browse; RSS supports subscribers who use feed readers; search reduces friction as the catalog grows.

Check the repository’s current activity, license and styling approach before building on it. Confirm how posts are modeled, whether the search implementation fits your content volume and which visual elements are easy to change without replacing the underlying layouts.

Cactus for a minimal personal site

Cactus is described with content collections, MDX, search and RSS. It may suit a personal site where the author wants a restrained starting point and prefers to add only the components that are needed. MDX can be valuable when posts need embedded components, but it also adds a content workflow that should be understood before migration.

Its smaller stated feature set is a selection question, not a measured performance claim. Verify the current repository status, the license and the exact content-collection setup. If you need memberships, complex navigation or a large component library, calculate that customization work rather than assuming the demo includes it.

AstroWind for marketing and launch pages

AstroWind is presented as a landing and marketing starter. A repository check made in June 2026 reported Astro v6 and Tailwind CSS v4 at that time. This makes it a candidate for a home page, product explanation, campaign or launch funnel where reusable sections and calls to action matter more than an editorial archive.

Version information is time-sensitive. Recheck the current package files, repository destination and license. Then compare the starter’s sections with your funnel: headline, proof, feature explanation, pricing or signup, FAQ and contact paths. A marketing starter may still require substantial work for forms, analytics, consent and backend services.

Checks that matter more than a polished demo

Astro and dependency compatibility

Theme listings and screenshots can outlive the Astro generation they were built for. Read the project’s package manifest and release notes, then install it in an isolated branch using the documented process. Confirm that the required Astro version, adapter, CSS framework and content tools fit your deployment target. Do not treat a directory description as a durable compatibility guarantee.

License and intended use

Open the repository’s actual license file. Check whether it permits modification, redistribution and client or commercial use, and note obligations such as preserving notices. A “free” listing describes access or price; it does not replace the legal terms attached to the code and assets.

Maintenance signals

Inspect recent commits, releases, issue responses and documentation changes. A July 6, 2026 review reported recent pushes for AstroPaper, Starlight and Cactus, while Astro Nano’s last push was June 16, 2025. Those are historical observations, not guarantees of support, security or quality, and they should be refreshed before publication or adoption.

Real feature coverage

Separate what is included from what is merely shown in a screenshot. Look for source files for navigation, search, feeds, forms, internationalization, content collections and responsive states. A long feature list can increase dependencies and customization work; a smaller starter can be easier to adapt. No standardized benchmark establishes a universal complexity ranking among these projects.

Accessibility and content fit

Review heading hierarchy, keyboard navigation, focus states, color contrast, alt-text handling and reduced-motion behavior in the source. Also check whether the content model supports your real publishing needs: drafts, taxonomies, authors, dates, code blocks, images and redirects. A visually attractive demo is not evidence that every accessibility or editorial requirement is solved.

A practical comparison framework

When two or more candidates appear suitable, score them against the same questions instead of choosing by popularity:

  • Purpose: Does the project’s information architecture match a blog, docs site, portfolio, store or marketing funnel?
  • Content model: Can you represent the pages and metadata you actually publish?
  • Version stack: Are Astro, adapters, CSS tools and integrations current enough for your planned build?
  • License: Is the intended personal, client or commercial use permitted?
  • Maintenance: Are commits, releases, issues and documentation showing recent attention?
  • Included components: Which pages and integrations are ready, and which must be rebuilt?
  • Customization cost: How much demo content, styling and navigation will you remove or rewrite?
  • Accessibility: Can you meet your keyboard, contrast, semantic and motion requirements without fighting the template?

The available sources do not provide a standardized speed, accessibility or popularity benchmark. Avoid declaring one theme objectively fastest, most accessible or best without separate testing.

What “free” does—and does not—cover

These are digital resources. Downloading a theme does not provide a domain, hosting, deployment pipeline, email service, database or third-party API. Hosting and deployment are separate services. The official directory includes an Astro Cloudflare Starter for Cloudflare Pages, but its listing alone does not establish current service terms or make it a universal hosting recommendation.

Budget for the work around the theme: content migration, image processing, redirects, analytics, forms, accessibility review, dependency updates and ongoing maintenance. A free starting point can still have a real implementation cost in time or contracted development.

A maintenance plan after launch

  1. Record the Astro version, adapter, CSS framework and major integrations used by the project.
  2. Watch the repository’s releases and issue tracker for breaking changes.
  3. Test dependency updates in a branch before deploying them to production.
  4. Recheck search, RSS, navigation, forms, language switching and dark mode after upgrades.
  5. Keep the license notices and attribution required by the project’s terms.
  6. Revisit the theme when your content model changes; replacing a poor fit is often safer than accumulating patches.

Bottom line: pick the fit, then verify the facts

For documentation, begin with Starlight; for a blog, examine AstroPaper; for a lighter personal site, examine Cactus; and for a marketing or launch page, examine AstroWind. Use Astro’s official directory to discover alternatives in portfolios, business, e-commerce and other categories. Before committing, verify the repository’s current Astro support, license, maintenance activity and actual components. “Free” lowers the entry price, but the right choice is the project that minimizes mismatch and future rework.
