What “free” means in these app categories

Scanning ordinary documents with Adobe Scan
What it is designed to capture
Adobe Scan turns a supported phone or tablet into a PDF scanner. Adobe specifically describes use cases such as receipts, forms, notes, and whiteboards. Automatic boundary detection helps frame a page, and OCR (optical character recognition) creates searchable text from a captured document. This is the right fit when the output you need is a clean PDF rather than a photograph left in your camera roll.
Adobe lists compatibility with iOS 15 and later and Android 8.0 and later. If your device is older, check the store listing before planning a workflow; installing a different scanner app will not make an unsupported operating system compatible.
A reliable first scan
- Install Adobe Scan from your device’s official app store and open it. Grant camera access when prompted; without it the app cannot capture a page.
- Place the document on a contrasting, reasonably flat surface under even light. Remove clips or objects that cover text.
- Choose the document capture mode and hold the phone above the page. Let automatic boundary detection find the edges, then capture. If the outline is wrong, retake the page rather than accepting a crop that cuts off a margin.
- Review every page in the thumbnail strip. Rotate pages, reorder them, or recapture pages with glare, shadows, or missing corners before exporting.
- Use the app’s text-recognition option when you need searchable or selectable text. OCR can misread handwriting, decorative type, low contrast, and numbers, so compare important names, totals, and dates with the original.
- Save or share the result as a PDF. Adobe’s free-download statement does not mean that every Acrobat editing or conversion feature offered after export is free; read the upgrade prompt before confirming a paid plan.
Quality checks that prevent a bad archive
- Edges: Make sure all four corners are visible. Automatic detection is helpful, but it is not a guarantee that a curled or dark page was cropped correctly.
- Legibility: A brighter light placed to the side usually works better than a harsh overhead reflection. Avoid casting the phone’s shadow across the text.
- Order: For a multi-page form, check the page sequence before sharing. A correctly recognized page in the wrong order is still an unusable submission.

When you actually mean sheet-music scanning

A sensible score workflow
- Install PlayScan from Google Play and check the current in-app explanation of free scans and Pro functions.
- Photograph or scan one clear page of music with the staves square to the camera. Keep the entire page in frame, including clefs, key signatures, time signatures, and repeat marks.
- Run recognition and inspect the rendered notation. Correct obvious interpretation errors before relying on playback; a misread accidental or rhythm changes the music.
- Use the player on the free allowance to test whether the tempo and instrumentation are suitable for practice.
- If you need a complete multi-page work or PDF import/export, compare the displayed Pro cost and limits with your needs before subscribing.

- Install the mobile app from your local store and read the permissions screen. Location access can make the simulated sky match your observing site; if you decline it, enter or select a location manually if the app offers that option.
- Confirm the device date and time. A wrong clock produces a convincing but incorrect sky, especially when you are comparing a visible planet or Moon with an event time.
- Open the real-time identification view and point the phone toward the area of sky you want to investigate. Select a labeled object to read its name and details supplied by the app.
- Use the date, time, and location controls to rehearse an observing plan. Test tomorrow night, a past date, or a different location rather than waiting outside to discover that an object has already set.
- Check the store page for the current free/paid boundary before depending on a catalog, simulation control, or additional visualization. The listing’s in-app-purchase notice means that availability is not uniform across all features.

Starting a first practice session

Common problems and fixes
The scan has crooked edges or missing text
Retake the page with all corners visible, better contrast, and light from the side. Inspect the crop manually instead of assuming automatic boundary detection is correct. If OCR is wrong, keep the PDF image but verify critical text against the paper; changing fonts or export settings cannot recover characters that were never captured.

The sheet-music app will not scan a whole book
Check the PlayScan listing’s current allowance. The documented free tier limits scans, while unlimited scanning and multi-page import are Pro functions. You may need to scan only a short excerpt, use a different legal copy of the score, or decide that the paid tier is justified for your workflow.
Stellarium shows the wrong object
Verify the phone’s date, time, and selected location, then repeat the identification with the device pointed steadily at the target area. Compare the simulated position with what is actually above your horizon. A label is not proof that the object is visible through clouds, trees, buildings, or heavy light pollution.
Music feedback jumps between correct and incorrect
Move the device closer without blocking the instrument, reduce background audio, and repeat the app’s listening or calibration step. Play one note or chord at a time to isolate the problem. If recognition remains unreliable, use the lesson sequence and a metronome-like count as practice structure rather than treating the score as an authoritative measurement.
A free trial becomes a subscription
Record the trial end date when you start it. Open the subscription-management screen for your app store, read the renewal price and interval, and cancel before the stated deadline if you do not want to continue. A “free to try” label is not the same as a permanently free account.
A simple decision checklist
- Name the output you need: a searchable PDF, playable notation, an identified sky object, or a lesson plan with playing feedback.
