DW, FRANCE 24 and Sky News are the strongest broadly documented free alternatives to the Al Jazeera app for live news. DW is the best multilingual option if you need English, Spanish, Russian or Arabic. FRANCE 24 adds French to a similar four-language mix. Sky News is the simplest choice for a free mobile app and live stream. BBC News is useful only where BBC’s current guidance supports live-channel access—specifically the USA and Australia in the cited help page.
“Free” describes the broadcaster or app-store offer, not a promise that a live channel works in every country, on every device or without changing rights. Check your local app store and the live stream itself before relying on any service.

What “free” means for a live-news app
A free download and a free live channel are different things. A broadcaster can offer an app at no charge while limiting its live feed by territory, platform, rights window or account type. An app may also provide free clips and on-demand reports while the continuous channel is unavailable where you live.

- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
For that reason, evaluate each option in this order:
- Country: confirm that the service is intended to stream live news in your location.
- Device: check the exact phone, tablet, smart-TV operating system or set-top box you plan to use.
- Language: verify that the live feed—not only the article library—uses your preferred language.
- Live access: open the channel or live-feed screen and confirm that a current broadcast starts.
- Account terms: note any sign-in or subscription message before treating the service as a dependable free replacement.
Availability changes as broadcasters renegotiate distribution and app stores update listings. The dates below are the dates shown in the cited listings or announcements, not a guarantee that the same rights will remain unchanged.
DW: the strongest multilingual alternative
What you get
DW’s official app listing describes around-the-clock live TV in English, Spanish, Russian and Arabic. It also says the app is free with no subscription and includes on-demand reporting. That combination makes DW the clearest first choice for readers who want a continuous live channel and need more than English.

- Russian is explicitly listed: this is a meaningful differentiator among the options documented here.
- Four named languages: English, Spanish, Russian and Arabic cover a wide range of multilingual viewing needs.
- Live plus catch-up: when you miss a broadcast, on-demand reporting is available in the same app listing’s feature description.
- No-subscription wording: the listing reviewed describes the app as free with no subscription.
Device and availability check
The listing reviewed is the Android TV version, with an update date of August 28, 2026. Do not assume that an Android TV listing proves identical availability on your phone, tablet, smart-TV store or set-top box. Search your device’s official store for the DW app, confirm the publisher, then look for the live-TV control after installation.

FRANCE 24: four languages and 24-hour world news
What you get
FRANCE 24’s free-app listing describes 24-hour world-news coverage, live feeds, on-demand programmes and content in English, French, Spanish and Arabic. It is a particularly good fit if French is essential or if you want both a live channel and a programme library for later viewing.
Why choose it
- French is included: FRANCE 24 is the clearest pick in this shortlist for French-language live news.
- Arabic, English and Spanish are also listed: you can switch the service’s language focus without changing broadcasters.
- On-demand programmes: the listing specifically mentions catch-up material rather than only a rolling stream.
- Continuous coverage: the description refers to 24-hour world-news coverage and live feeds.
Device and availability check
The cited listing is an official Google Play app listing, updated September 22, 2026. That confirms the described Android distribution at the time of the listing; it does not establish that the app or every live feed is available in every country or on every television platform. Check your local store and test the live feed before depending on it.
Sky News: the straightforward free mobile route
What you get
Sky’s official mobile-app page says its iOS and Android apps are free and that viewers can stream Sky News live for free. The same page describes breaking-news alerts and video and audio coverage, so the app is useful both for a continuous stream and for quick updates when you do not want to keep video running.
Why choose it
- Simple phone setup: the cited page directly names iOS and Android apps.
- Live stream plus alerts: you can follow breaking developments without watching continuously.
- Video and audio: the service is not limited to a single live-video mode.
What is not established
The cited Sky page does not specify a language-selection list or publish a territory-by-territory rights map. Treat it as a strong mobile candidate, not as proof of universal access. Install the official app from your local iOS or Android store, open its live-news area and confirm that the stream is playable where you are.

BBC News: a useful regional option, not a universal replacement
Where the live channel is documented
BBC Help says the BBC News Channel live stream is available on BBC.com and in the BBC app for viewers based in the USA and Australia. If you are in one of those regions, BBC News can be a practical additional source to check alongside the three more broadly documented options.
Why the subscription caveat matters
BBC guidance also says US users who do not subscribe have limited access, while subscriber access includes the livestream. Canada’s access rules differ. Therefore, do not describe BBC News as a universally free live stream or assume that seeing the app in your store means the channel will play without restrictions.
How to verify it
- Open BBC.com or the BBC app from the country where you will watch.
- Look specifically for the BBC News Channel live option, not only articles or short clips.
- Check whether the service presents a regional or subscription notice.
- Start the stream before relying on it for a scheduled event or breaking story.
Keep Al Jazeera if the problem is the screen, not the broadcaster
Switching apps is not always necessary. Al Jazeera’s own stay-connected information lists live and on-demand video, plus viewing on smart TVs and set-top boxes. If your issue is an awkward phone app, try the broadcaster’s supported television route first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAl Jazeera’s January 19, 2026 announcement says its English FAST channel on Samsung TV Plus launched on November 12, 2025 in the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt. Those are the named launch markets. The announcement does not establish access outside them, so do not infer that Samsung TV Plus carries the channel in every country.

Phone or tablet
Sky News has the clearest documented phone path because its official page names both iOS and Android. DW and FRANCE 24 are also worth checking in your phone’s official store, but the cited evidence here comes from particular app listings and does not create a universal device matrix.
Smart TV or Android TV
DW’s reviewed listing is specifically for Android TV, making it the most directly documented television-app option in this comparison. Al Jazeera also lists smart-TV and set-top-box viewing. For any other television platform, search the built-in store and verify that the live channel appears after installation.

Web browser
BBC’s cited guidance explicitly names BBC.com for live-channel access in the USA and Australia. The other services may have web destinations, but the evidence summarized here supports their app or broadcaster descriptions rather than a complete browser-access inventory. Use the official broadcaster page for your region and look for a live control.

Installation and verification checklist
- Record your location and device. Rights can differ even between a phone and a television in the same home.
- Use the official app store or broadcaster domain. Match the publisher name and avoid unofficial streams that may disappear or carry unwanted software.
- Read the current listing. Check the wording around “live,” “free,” languages and subscriptions, plus the listing’s update date.
- Install and open the app. Find the live-TV, live-feed or channel section rather than relying on a clip that happens to be current.
- Test playback on your normal connection. Confirm that video starts, audio is in the intended language and the stream is not blocked after a short preview.
- Check the fallback. If the app is unavailable, see whether the broadcaster offers its official website or a supported television route in your region.
- Recheck before major events. Rights and app availability are volatile; a stream that worked previously can change after an update.
Common failure modes and fixes
The app does not appear in your store
Store catalogues are regional. Confirm that your account’s store country and the device operating system match the service’s supported distribution. Do not install a third-party package simply to bypass a missing listing; first try the broadcaster’s official website or another service whose app is offered locally.
The app installs but no live channel appears
Look for a separate Live, Live TV or Channels area. If only clips and on-demand programmes are visible, the continuous feed may be restricted in your territory or on that device. Check the service’s current help page and test another device before assuming the broadcaster has discontinued live coverage.
A stream asks for a subscription
Read the notice carefully. It may apply to a particular country, account tier or premium feature rather than every piece of content. BBC’s US guidance is the clearest example: non-subscribers have limited access while subscriber access includes the livestream. If the required tier is not acceptable, choose DW, FRANCE 24 or Sky News only after confirming their local live access.
Video works but the language is wrong
Check whether the app offers separate language channels rather than an audio selector inside one stream. DW lists English, Spanish, Russian and Arabic live TV; FRANCE 24 lists English, French, Spanish and Arabic. If your preferred language is not shown in the live section, do not assume that translated articles mean a translated channel is available.
The stream stops or quality changes
First determine whether the problem is local: try the same service on another connection or device, update the official app and restart playback. If multiple devices fail while other services work, treat it as a service or rights issue and use your verified backup rather than relying on an unlicensed mirror.
Which one should you start with?
- Start with DW if you need the widest documented language choice, especially Russian, or want Android TV live television plus on-demand reporting.
- Start with FRANCE 24 if French matters, or if a 24-hour service with live feeds and on-demand programmes fits your routine.
- Start with Sky News if you mainly watch on an iPhone, iPad or Android device and want a free live stream with breaking-news alerts.
- Check BBC News if you are in the USA or Australia and its current access terms suit you; do not treat it as a globally open replacement.
- Keep Al Jazeera and change the viewing route if your broadcaster preference is unchanged but the app or screen is the problem. Its documented smart-TV, set-top-box and selected Samsung TV Plus routes may solve that specific issue.
No single service wins for every country, language and screen. The practical winner is the first app that satisfies all four checks—your location, your device, your language and a currently playable live channel—without an access condition you are unwilling to accept.
