Which free Photoshop alternative should you choose?
Start with the work you need to do, not with a claim that one app is the closest Photoshop clone. An application can be a good alternative for one of those jobs and a poor fit for another.

For general image manipulation on a desktop, GIMP is the most directly aligned option in this group. Affinity by Canva is worth considering if photo work is only one part of a broader desktop design practice. Its combination of photo editing, vector design and page layout may reduce the need to switch applications for those different kinds of creative work. The cited comparison says it does not provide photo cataloguing, however. If you need a system for organizing a large photo collection as well as editing individual images, that is a meaningful gap rather than a minor feature difference.
Creating composites or exchanging layered files
Layer-based projects depend on more than whether an application can open an image. The receiving editor may interpret layers, masks, effects, text or other project elements differently, and the available evidence does not establish format-by-format compatibility for these four applications. Photopea is specifically relevant to PSD-related work, but confirm that your exact file and the features it uses work as expected. For GIMP, Affinity or Krita, test an actual project handoff rather than assuming that a shared file extension means an identical editable result.

A useful handoff test is to open a copy of a representative project, inspect the elements you would need to keep editing, make a small change, save it and reopen it in the application that will receive the file. Check the layers or other editable components that matter to you. If the project is for a client or collaborator, agree in advance which application will be the source of truth and whether a flattened export is acceptable. This is a practical check, not a claim that any one tool supports every Photoshop document feature.
Painting and illustration
Krita is the strongest match here when the task is drawing or painting rather than conventional photo retouching. Its identity as a digital painting and illustration application is central to its fit: artists should evaluate its brush and drawing workflow, while photographers should not treat it as a full-featured substitute for a photography-centered editor. If a project combines painting with photo cleanup or graphic layout, consider whether one application can cover the whole job or whether a second tool will be needed.

If your work moves between image editing, vector artwork and page layout, Affinity by Canva has the broadest stated scope among these choices. GIMP is an image editor, Photopea is a browser-based editor, and Krita is painting-focused; none is presented here as the same kind of combined suite. How to evaluate an alternative before switching
A short, representative trial is more informative than choosing by a feature list. Use a copy of a real project, and test the tasks that would make the switch succeed or fail.

- Write down the actual job. Identify whether you mainly retouch photos, combine images, paint, create vector assets, lay out pages or perform several of those tasks.

“Closest” depends on what Photoshop does for you.
