Mixkit needs no signup or attribution. Motion Array has stronger filters for orientation, resolution and After Effects version. Both offer editable project files, but compatibility and license terms differ, so check each listing before you build on it.
This guide doesn’t claim a fixed number of templates. Both catalogs change often, so a count like “80+” would go stale quickly. Instead it covers what each source offers, how to match a template to your project, and what to verify before you publish.

Where to download free After Effects templates
Mixkit
Mixkit has a free After Effects template collection that includes slideshows, title treatments, transitions and logo reveals. Its page says no signup or attribution is required. It describes the templates as customizable, though how much you can change depends on the individual project. Mixkit also describes personal and commercial use for its video templates and links to its license.

Mixkit’s FAQ states: “The latest version of Adobe After Effects is required to use the Adobe After Effects templates available for free on Mixkit.” If you run an older release, expect some files not to open cleanly.

Motion Array (free collection)
Motion Array’s free collection is easier to filter. Its categories include logos, typography and titles, slideshows, lower thirds, intros, infographics, transitions, mockups, tools, animated letters and overlays. You can filter by orientation, resolution and software version. On the page we reviewed, the visible After Effects options were CC 2025, CC 2024 and CC 2023. Filter options can change, so check the live page.
Motion Array’s free assets are tied to its account system, and its terms add several restrictions (see the licensing section below).

Which type of template to pick
- Titles and typography: The easiest to customize. They usually need only text, color and font changes.
- Lower thirds: Good for interviews, tutorials and corporate video. They are short and easy to drop onto a timeline.
- Logo reveals and intros: Useful for branding, but they often depend on a clean vector or transparent logo.
- Transitions: Check whether they rely on adjustment layers or plugins you don’t have.
- Slideshows: They need the most media replacement, so check the number of placeholders.
- Overlays, infographics and mockups: Handy for social posts and explainers, but they vary a lot in how editable they are.
Match the template to your output format
Pick orientation and resolution before you browse. A 16:9 template cropped for vertical video can push text outside safe areas. Motion Array’s orientation and resolution filters make this easy to settle upfront. On Mixkit, check the preview and project settings after download. Choose a template at or above your delivery resolution, because scaling up a lower-resolution composition can soften text and shapes.

- Mixkit: Says its templates are free with no attribution required, and describes personal and commercial use for video templates. Read the linked license for the details.
- Motion Array: Says free assets can be used personally and commercially. Its commercial-use page, updated June 30, 2026, says most assets are cleared for commercial use. The exceptions include redistribution, completing or customizing templates as a service for third parties, and editorial-only content, which is not cleared for commercial use. Paid assets are not available under a free account.
In practice, using a template in your own video, including client work, is a different matter from reselling or sharing the file. Don’t repackage project files. For client deliverables, read the current license first and keep a record of where each template came from.

Practical tips for customizing templates
- Save a copy of the original project before editing.
- Collect files into a single folder so missing-footage links stay intact.
- Change text, colors and timing in the template’s controls first, and avoid restructuring precomps unless you need to.
- Keep branding consistent by reusing your fonts and palette across titles, lower thirds and transitions.
