Best FPS Settings for Tracking Ammo, Cooldowns, and Other Limited Resources

The best resource-tracking setup is deliberately boring: keep ammunition, equipment, and ability readouts permanently visible; enlarge and reposition them until they can be read in a quick glance; enable persistent prompts when the game offers them; and use color-blind or custom color controls when threats blend into the scene. Then add a second cue—an icon, label, outline, prompt, or sound—so color is never carrying the whole message.

Use performance and network overlays only while diagnosing a problem. During normal matches, hide anything that competes with the ammo or cooldown information. The exact labels differ by game, platform, mode, region, and version, so treat the configurations below as a starting framework and verify the current in-game menu after every major update.

The resource-tracking settings to change first

Before adjusting advanced graphics or sensitivity, make the information that prevents a resource mistake easy to see. A reliable baseline for most first-person shooters is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Ammo and equipment counts: Enabled, fully opaque, and large enough to read without leaning toward the screen. Keep the current magazine, reserve ammunition, firing mode, and tactical or lethal equipment counts visible when the game supports those fields.
  2. Ability or cooldown prompts: Persistent rather than interaction-only, if that option exists. A prompt that remains on the HUD is more dependable than waiting for a brief notification to reappear.
  3. HUD bounds: Adjust horizontal and vertical margins so the resource cluster is inside your normal field of view, not pressed against an edge or hidden by overscan.
  4. HUD scale and opacity: Increase size until the smallest number is readable at your normal seating distance. Use high opacity for numbers and icons; reduce only decorative or nonessential panels.
  5. Color: Select a color-blind mode or custom ally, enemy, and party colors if the default palette disappears against a map.
  6. Redundant cues: Keep text, symbols, outlines, or audio cues active alongside color wherever the game provides them.
  7. Automatic behavior: Decide whether empty-magazine weapon switching or auto-cycle-on-empty helps your play. Automation can prevent a dead trigger pull, but it can also move you to an unintended weapon.

This order matters. A perfect color choice cannot compensate for a counter that is too small, and a large counter is not useful if a performance graph covers it.

Why players miss reloads and cooldowns

Resource errors usually come from an information problem rather than a lack of game knowledge. During a fight, your eyes prioritize the reticle and moving targets. If ammunition is far from the action, low-contrast, or hidden behind an optional panel, checking it takes too long. The same is true for a grenade, tactical item, ultimate, or weapon charge.

There are four common failure patterns:

  • Edge loss: The counter sits at the extreme lower corner, where it leaves your useful visual field during a rapid turn.
  • Signal competition: Damage effects, kill feed, chat, or decorative widgets have stronger contrast than the resource indicator.
  • Color confusion: Friendly, hostile, ready, and unavailable states use hues that look similar in your display or under a particular map’s lighting.
  • State changes without confirmation: An item becomes unavailable, a weapon empties, or an ability is ready, but the game supplies only a fleeting animation that you do not notice.

The solution is not to show every available widget. It is to make the few states that change your next action—rounds remaining, reserve rounds, equipment count, cooldown progress, and readiness—fast to identify.

Build a HUD that can be read in one glance

Keep the complete resource cluster visible

Do not hide ammunition, tactical equipment, lethal equipment, or ability indicators to create a cleaner screenshot. In Activision’s 2019 Modern Warfare guide, the lower-right Weapons Detail area contains the weapon’s chamber and total ammunition, firing mode, and tactical and lethal equipment counts. Those fields represent the minimum information a player should preserve when customizing a HUD.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your game separates magazine and reserve ammunition, keep both visible. A magazine number answers “can I continue this burst?”; a reserve number answers “can I afford another engagement?” Firing mode matters for preventing an accidental single-shot or burst expectation. Equipment counts should remain visible even when an item is on cooldown, because a zero count and a temporarily unavailable item require different decisions.

Set margins before changing scale

First move the HUD inward with the game’s horizontal and vertical margin controls. This protects the information from display overscan and keeps it in the region you naturally scan. Only then change scale. Enlarging a counter that is still clipped or trapped against the bezel solves the wrong problem.

After each adjustment, load a practice range or a low-risk match and check the HUD while moving, aiming, and taking damage. If you must stop your movement to identify the number, bring the cluster closer to the center or increase its scale slightly. Avoid placing it directly over the reticle, where it can obscure a target.

Use opacity strategically

Resource numbers, cooldown rings, and ready/unavailable states should be close to fully opaque. Lower opacity is more appropriate for a minimap frame, social panel, or other information that is useful but not urgent. If the game has separate opacity controls, reduce background boxes before reducing the text or icon itself.

Remove competing panels

Optional panels can be useful in a menu and distracting in a fight. Disable duplicate weapon cards, large stat blocks, or persistent feeds when they overlap the resource area. Keep an item only if it changes an immediate decision. A small, readable resource cluster beats a crowded HUD that technically contains more information.

Use persistent prompts for weapons and abilities

A prompt that stays on screen reduces the need to remember whether an ability, weapon attachment, or interaction is available. Apex documentation describes persistent button prompts for weapons and abilities, along with a hop-up pop-up above weapons. If you repeatedly lose track of an ability state or weapon context, turn those prompts on and leave them enabled until the habit is reliable.

Persistent does not mean every notification should remain forever. Keep prompts that answer a recurring question—what can I activate, which input does it use, and what is attached to this weapon. Turn off transient or redundant notices if they cover the ammo counter or reticle.

Make readiness and unavailability distinguishable

A ready ability should look different from one charging, one blocked by a condition, and one with no charges. Prefer a combination of icon state, text, and progress animation when available. If all states use the same small icon and differ only by hue, enable a text or audio accessibility option as a second cue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check prompts after changing controls

When you remap a key or controller button, verify that the on-screen prompt updates to the new input. A stale prompt can create a resource mistake even when the HUD layout is otherwise good. Test every tactical, lethal, ability, and weapon-swap input once in a safe area.

Choose colors that remain distinct

Start with the built-in color-blind modes

Color-blind presets are a practical first test, not a diagnosis. EA’s Apex accessibility material documents protanopia, deuteranopia, and tritanopia modes. Try each preset in a practice area containing friendly outlines, enemy indicators, item highlights, and the resource colors you need to read. Keep the one that separates the most important states on your display.

Activision’s Call of Duty documentation also describes a color-blind type setting and separate color choices for player groups. If allies, enemies, and party members blend together, adjust those group colors rather than changing every HUD element at once. Changing one category at a time makes it clear which adjustment fixed the confusion.

Use custom colors conservatively

Choose colors by contrast and consistency, not personal preference. A bright color that looks clear in a settings menu can disappear in snow, fire, or a green-lit interior. Test the same color against several map backgrounds and against damage effects. Keep “ready,” “danger,” and “friendly” states visually far apart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Never make color the only signal

Pair a hue with a shape, word, outline, animation, or sound. A filled versus empty icon, a “READY” label, a different border pattern, or a distinct alert tone remains useful when lighting, compression, or color vision makes hues unreliable. Riot’s VALORANT materials describe visual utility and damage indicators, while Apex lists subtitles, accessible chat, voice-to-text, and text-to-speech options. These features can provide context without requiring you to decode a color instantly.

Keep information close to the action without creating clutter

Glance time is the interval between deciding to check a resource and returning your attention to the fight. You cannot measure it with a universal published percentage; official game documentation lists controls and features rather than a controlled statistic showing that one HUD arrangement improves every player’s performance by a fixed amount.

You can still compare two layouts consistently. Use the following four questions:

Comparison axis What to check Prefer the configuration that…
Glance time How quickly can you identify magazine, reserve, equipment, and cooldown state while moving? Requires the fewest eye movements and no pause in movement.
Cue redundancy Does an icon, label, outline, prompt, or sound back up the color? Communicates the state even when the palette is hard to distinguish.
Distraction How much unrelated HUD remains in the same visual area? Leaves urgent counters prominent and optional panels quiet.
Failure recovery What happens when a magazine is empty or an ability is unavailable? Shows a clear warning or performs an intentional automatic action.

Test one layout for several matches instead of changing five options between every round. Record the specific failure—missed reload, wrong weapon, overlooked ready ability, or misread teammate marker—and change the setting that addresses that failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide whether automatic weapon switching helps

Automatic behavior can prevent an obvious resource mistake, but it changes control of the fight. Apex offers an auto-cycle-on-empty option, and Call of Duty documents switching weapons when ammunition is depleted. These features are useful when an empty magazine would otherwise leave you staring at a reload animation. They are harmful when the next weapon has a different range, fire mode, or tactical purpose and you did not intend to draw it.

Use automatic switching when

  • You frequently press fire after the magazine reaches zero and lose the encounter before noticing.
  • Your secondary weapon is a predictable emergency choice for most fights.
  • You can immediately recognize the switch through a sound or HUD change.

Keep it off when

  • You carry specialized weapons and need to choose the replacement deliberately.
  • An automatic switch interrupts a reload, ability use, or precision shot.
  • You regularly find yourself firing the wrong weapon after a depleted-magazine event.

Whichever choice you make, keep the empty state visually obvious. A weapon icon that changes, an empty counter, a sound cue, or a prompt should tell you why your weapon changed or stopped firing.

Game-specific starting points

Apex Legends

Begin with weapon and ability prompts enabled, then check the hop-up pop-up above the weapon if attachments are easy to forget. Review reticle color and the color-blind mode together; a reticle that is clear on a neutral wall may vanish in a bright combat scene. If you are diagnosing performance or connection problems, enable the optional display for FPS, latency, and packet loss. Hide it again when the diagnosis is finished so it does not compete with ammo and ability information.

Apex’s documented accessibility options also include subtitles, accessible chat, voice-to-text, and text-to-speech. Select only the channels that solve a communication or awareness problem, and keep their placement away from the resource cluster. Decide separately whether auto-cycle-on-empty matches your weapon habits.

Call of Duty

Keep the lower-right Weapons Detail area readable. It shows chamber and total ammunition, firing mode, and tactical and lethal equipment counts in the Modern Warfare guide. Set horizontal and vertical HUD margins so the area is not clipped, then adjust scale and opacity. If default team colors blend into the map, select a color-blind type or custom player-group colors.

Test depleted-ammo weapon switching in a controlled setting. If it produces unwanted swaps, disable it and rely on a stronger empty-magazine cue plus a deliberate reload or manual swap. If it prevents repeated dead-trigger moments and your secondary is dependable, leave it enabled.

VALORANT

Keep utility and damage indicators legible and verify that their visual language still makes sense after a patch. Riot’s patch notes for version 6.07 describe visual updates to the yellow and red indicators that appear when utility is nearby or when you are taking or about to take damage. A change to an indicator can alter how quickly you recognize a threat even if your personal HUD settings did not change.

For diagnosis, the performance graphs are documented under Settings > Video > Stats. VALORANT also provides low-client-FPS and network icons. Use those indicators to distinguish a resource-reading problem from a frame-rate or connection problem; then hide graphs and icons that are not needed during ordinary play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use performance overlays as a troubleshooting tool

An FPS counter cannot make a cooldown easier to see, but a performance problem can make every cue feel late or inconsistent. Apex documents an FPS, latency, and packet-loss display. VALORANT documents performance graphs under Settings > Video > Stats and icons for low client FPS and network conditions.

Turn overlays on when symptoms point to performance

  • Inputs feel delayed even though the HUD is clear.
  • Animations or cooldown rings appear to skip.
  • Other players rubber-band or damage arrives late.
  • The resource counter is readable in a quiet area but difficult to follow during heavy effects.

Watch the relevant indicator while reproducing the problem. High latency or packet loss suggests a connection issue; low client FPS suggests rendering or system load. A stable overlay with a still-confusing counter points back to HUD placement, scale, color, or prompts.

Hide diagnostic clutter after testing

Once you know whether the issue is performance or visibility, turn off graphs and extra network panels during matches unless you actively need them. The goal is to reserve high-contrast space for ammunition, equipment, abilities, and immediate threats.

A practical setup procedure

  1. Reset only the HUD category: Start from a known layout rather than carrying forward years of small changes.
  2. Enable essential counters: Turn on magazine, reserve, equipment, ability, and weapon-state information.
  3. Set margins: Move the cluster inward until no part is clipped at your normal resolution and display setting.
  4. Adjust scale: Increase the smallest important number or icon, not just the surrounding panel.
  5. Set opacity: Keep urgent text and states strong; reduce nonessential backgrounds and duplicate panels.
  6. Enable persistent prompts: Turn on weapon and ability button prompts, hop-up or attachment notices, and other state prompts that you repeatedly miss.
  7. Choose a color mode: Test protanopia, deuteranopia, tritanopia, or the game’s custom group colors where available.
  8. Add a second cue: Keep labels, icons, outlines, subtitles, or audio cues that reinforce readiness and danger.
  9. Choose automation: Decide on auto-cycle-on-empty or depleted-ammo switching after testing your normal weapon pair.
  10. Run a controlled check: In a practice area, fire to low ammunition, empty the magazine, use and recharge an ability, equip an attachment, and trigger a damage or utility warning.
  11. Remove diagnostic overlays: Keep FPS, latency, packet-loss, graphs, and network icons only while investigating a technical symptom.
  12. Save a reference: Note the settings or capture a screenshot so an update rollback is quick.

Troubleshoot the specific miss

“I notice the reload too late.”

Increase magazine-counter size and opacity, move it inward, and enable an empty-magazine sound or prompt if available. If the game supports depleted-ammo switching, test it with your usual secondary rather than enabling it blindly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I forget that an ability is ready.”

Enable persistent ability prompts and a ready-state animation, label, or sound. Keep the icon outside the kill feed and damage effects. If the prompt is present but unreadable, increase HUD scale before changing colors.

“Friendly and hostile colors look the same.”

Try the game’s color-blind presets, then custom player-group colors. Test against more than one map environment and retain outlines or labels so the distinction does not depend on hue alone.

“The HUD is readable in the menu but not in a fight.”

Reduce unrelated panels, raise opacity for urgent counters, and test while moving through visual effects. If the problem appears only with stutter or delay, enable the game’s FPS, latency, packet-loss, or network indicators and separate a technical problem from a visual-design problem.

“An update changed what I see.”

Recheck HUD bounds, prompts, colors, and automatic switching after a major patch. Riot notes that accessibility features can vary by game, platform, mode, region, or version, and patch notes can change indicator behavior. Do not assume a previous label or color mapping still means the same thing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What “best” means for your configuration

The best resource HUD is the one that makes the next limited-resource decision obvious without interrupting movement or aim. For one player that means a larger lower-right ammo cluster and automatic emergency switching. For another it means manual weapon selection, persistent ability prompts, and aggressive removal of every nonessential panel. Compare configurations by glance time, redundant cues, distraction, and recovery from an empty or unavailable state—not by how minimal or colorful the screenshot looks.

Official feature pages and patch notes establish which controls exist, but they do not establish a universal percentage improvement for a particular HUD, color, or cooldown setting. Treat your first arrangement as a testable baseline, verify it after updates, and change one cause at a time when a resource error keeps recurring.
