There is no single best Fortnite preset for every PC, console, and display. The most reliable starting point is Epic’s diagnostic baseline: set Quality Presets to Low and 3D Resolution to 100%. If the game becomes stable, raise one setting at a time. On a PC that still delivers low frame rates, try Rendering Mode: Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity, apply it, and restart Fortnite. That can improve frame rate, but it deliberately reduces visual detail and does not promise a fixed FPS increase.
Console players have fewer graphics controls. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S can offer a 120 FPS mode only when the console setting, Fortnite toggle, display, and audio-video connection all support it. Visibility settings such as color-blind modes, motion blur, anti-aliasing, and upscaling are personal and hardware-dependent rather than universal competitive advantages.

Start with a settings baseline that reveals the real problem
Before changing several options at once, create a repeatable baseline. This separates a rendering problem from a hardware, driver, temperature, or display-limit problem.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Fortnite’s Video settings.
- Set Quality Presets to Low.
- Set 3D Resolution to 100%.
- Play an actual match, not only the lobby, and observe frame consistency, image clarity, hitching, and crashes.
- If stability improves, raise individual quality settings gradually. Re-test after each change so you know which option caused a performance loss.
Epic Games Support recommends this Low-and-100% combination when diagnosing pixelation and other graphics issues. A computer that barely meets the minimum requirements may improve only slightly, or not at all, after settings changes; software options cannot create performance that the hardware cannot deliver.

A practical starting matrix
| Situation | First setting to try | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics corruption, pixelation, or crashes | Quality Presets: Low; 3D Resolution: 100% | Creates Epic’s diagnostic baseline without reducing internal resolution below the standard 100% starting point. |
| Persistently low FPS on a less-powerful PC | Rendering Mode: Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity | Reduces graphical fidelity and may increase FPS; Fortnite must be restarted after applying it. |
| FPS fluctuates around the monitor’s refresh rate | Review V-Sync and choose a sustainable frame-rate cap | V-Sync synchronizes FPS with the display refresh rate; a separate cap gives more control but can introduce stutter on some systems. |
| Jagged edges or shimmering | Compare the anti-aliasing and super-resolution options available on your hardware | Smoothing and upscaling can improve edges or reduce rendering load, with different image-quality and performance results. |
Choose the right PC rendering mode
Performance Mode: the low-FPS option
On PC, open the Video settings, find Rendering Mode, select Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity, apply the change, and restart Fortnite. Epic describes the built-in mode as able to assist players with low frame rates. It is an opportunity to trade detail for smoother play, not a guaranteed benchmark result.
Expect a visibly simpler image than you would get from a higher-fidelity renderer. If the game becomes stable but looks too coarse, move back to the previous rendering mode and lower individual settings instead, or test the available anti-aliasing and super-resolution choices. Compare in a real match because a setting that looks acceptable in the lobby may behave differently during a fight.
Remove optional high-resolution textures only when storage is the issue
Epic’s Performance Mode support guidance notes that high-resolution textures can be removed to save more than 15 GB of storage. This is an installation choice, not a promise of a particular FPS gain. Use it when disk space or texture-memory pressure is a concern, and keep the standard textures if their extra detail matters more to you.

Use the high-performance GPU on hybrid PCs
Laptops and compact PCs may have both integrated and discrete graphics. Epic’s troubleshooting guidance advises making sure Fortnite is assigned to the high-performance GPU. If the game is running on integrated graphics unintentionally, changing in-game quality settings may not solve the underlying bottleneck. Check the operating system or graphics-driver application’s per-game GPU assignment, then restart Fortnite and test again.
Set FPS limits and V-Sync deliberately
V-Sync determines how Fortnite presents frames relative to the monitor. Epic explains that V-Sync matches FPS to the monitor’s refresh rate. Turning V-Sync off permits a separate in-game frame-rate limit, which can suit some systems, but manual changes can also cause stutters or drops.
- Open Video settings and locate V-Sync and the Frame Rate Limit.
- Decide whether synchronization with the display is more useful than an independent cap. If your system regularly reaches the display’s refresh rate, synchronization can prevent the game from presenting frames out of step with the monitor.
- If you disable V-Sync, select a limit that the system can sustain consistently rather than a number it reaches only in quiet scenes.
- Apply the change and test in a match. If stutter or frame drops appear, restore the prior setting.
The lobby is not a reliable FPS test: Epic notes that lobby frame rate may be limited separately. Also, the FPS limit shown in the support material is stated as 360 FPS, but limits can change with game updates; verify the live menu before treating that number as current for your installation.

Compare anti-aliasing and super-resolution options
Anti-aliasing smooths jagged polygon edges. Super resolution reconstructs the output image from fewer rendered pixels, which can reduce rendering work and potentially improve performance. Neither category has one universally best choice because support and results depend on the GPU, rendering mode, resolution, and the current Fortnite build.
Epic lists these possible choices on its PC support page: TSR, NVIDIA DLSS, Intel XeSS, FXAA, SMAA, and TAA. The menu shown to you can differ by hardware and rendering mode. The same page states that AMD FSR is not currently offered as an in-game option in the version accessed for that guidance; availability can change with updates.
A controlled comparison method
- Keep Quality Presets, 3D Resolution, and the FPS cap unchanged.
- Choose one available anti-aliasing or super-resolution method.
- Inspect distant foliage, building edges, moving characters, and text for shimmer, blur, or ghosting.
- Play the same type of match and watch for frame-time spikes, not only the highest FPS number.
- Keep the option that gives the clearest image at a frame rate your system can hold consistently.
Enable 120 FPS on PlayStation 5
PS5’s 120 FPS option has prerequisites beyond the Fortnite menu. In the console’s Game Presets, select Performance Mode. Then, inside Fortnite, enable the 120 FPS option when it is offered.

Your display and the entire audio-video path must support the intended output. Epic notes that PS5 output resolution may change when the setup does not support 4K at 120 Hz. Check the television or monitor, HDMI connection, receiver or switch, and the console’s detected video capabilities. A 120 FPS toggle does not guarantee that every scene is rendered at 120 frames per second.
Enable 120 FPS on Xbox Series X|S
- On the Xbox, open TV & Display Options and enable a 120 Hz refresh rate.
- Use the console’s 4K TV Details screen to confirm which combinations of resolution and refresh rate your display path supports.
- Launch Fortnite and turn on its 120 FPS mode if the toggle is available.
Xbox 120 FPS support requires the console’s 120 Hz setting and a compatible display path. The mode is an operating target, not a guarantee of 120 rendered frames in every match; game workload, display capability, and system conditions still matter.

Color-blind options
Fortnite’s color-blind controls should be adjusted to the player’s actual color-vision needs. A mode that improves one person’s ability to distinguish an item or storm boundary can make another player’s image less comfortable. Change the setting, inspect common in-game colors, and keep the option that improves recognition for you.

Motion Blur
Motion Blur is preference-dependent. Where the control is available, switch it on or off and compare camera movement, target tracking, and readability. Epic states that Motion Blur is unavailable in Performance Mode, so the absence of the toggle there is expected rather than a malfunction.
Aspect ratio in competitive modes
Epic’s graphics troubleshooting guidance restricts Ranked, Tournaments, and similar competitive modes to a 16:9 aspect ratio. Black side bars in those modes are expected behavior, not evidence that your monitor or visibility settings are broken. Do not try to remove them by forcing a stretched aspect ratio in a mode that enforces 16:9.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the system before buying hardware
Epic publishes separate minimum, recommended, and Epic-quality PC requirement categories. Compare your processor, memory, graphics hardware, operating system, and available storage with the current requirements page before assuming that a preset can solve low FPS. A minimum-spec computer is not expected to run the highest settings reliably.
Diagnostic checklist for low frame rate and hitching
- Verify the requirements: confirm that the PC is in the supported range for the settings you want.
- Verify game files: repair the installation before treating corrupted data as a graphics limitation.
- Update graphics drivers: install a driver appropriate for the GPU, then restart the computer.
- Close background programs: browsers, overlays, recording tools, and other applications can compete for CPU, GPU, memory, or disk time.
- Check cooling: blocked vents, dust, or inadequate airflow can cause sustained clocks to fall after the system heats up.
- Use the correct GPU: on a hybrid laptop, assign Fortnite to the high-performance graphics processor.
- Consider storage and memory conditionally: Epic says an SSD and 6 GB or more of RAM can help older machines fit the game in memory and reduce hitches. Those observations are diagnostic considerations, not a blanket upgrade requirement.
- Retest after each change: use a real match and the same visual settings so improvements are attributable.
A dedicated GPU can help balance system load, but its presence does not establish a particular FPS outcome. Diagnose the bottleneck first instead of buying parts based only on a target number.
Match the setting to the problem
| Your priority | Prefer | Accept the trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stable frame delivery on weak hardware | Low quality settings or Performance Mode | Lower texture and effect fidelity. |
| Highest possible image detail | A higher quality preset with a sustainable frame cap | More GPU load and potentially lower or less consistent FPS. |
| FPS synchronized to the monitor | V-Sync | The game follows the display’s refresh behavior. |
| An independent FPS target | V-Sync off with a manual cap | Some systems may show stutter or frame drops; restore the previous setting if that happens. |
| Smoother edges at manageable load | Test the anti-aliasing or super-resolution methods exposed for your GPU | Image sharpness, latency, and performance vary by method and hardware. |
| Maximum console refresh output | PS5 Performance Mode or Xbox 120 Hz plus Fortnite’s 120 FPS toggle | Compatible display hardware is required, and the output resolution may change on PS5 when 4K at 120 Hz is unsupported. |
| Better color separation | A personally tuned color-blind setting | There is no setting that improves visibility for every player. |
Common mistakes that make Fortnite feel worse
- Changing several options simultaneously: you lose the ability to identify the setting responsible for an improvement or regression.
- Judging performance in the lobby: lobby FPS may be capped and does not represent a match.
- Chasing a peak FPS number: an unstable high cap can feel worse than a lower limit the system holds consistently.
- Assuming Performance Mode is a free upgrade: it can raise FPS while reducing graphical fidelity, and the result varies by computer.
- Assuming a 120 FPS toggle guarantees 120 frames: the display path and current scene still determine actual output.
- Forcing a non-16:9 image in competitive modes: black side bars may be an enforced 16:9 presentation.
- Buying a high-refresh monitor first: it helps only when your existing display limits the refresh rate you can use. Check refresh rate, resolution, connection support, and PC or console compatibility before spending money.
A repeatable tuning workflow
- Confirm the platform, display refresh rate, and whether the PC meets the relevant Fortnite requirement category.
- Apply Low quality and 100% 3D Resolution.
- Play a match and record the symptoms: low average FPS, sudden hitches, blur, jagged edges, crashes, or display limitations.
- For sustained low FPS on PC, test Performance Mode, apply it, and restart.
- Choose V-Sync or a manual cap based on whether synchronization or independent control matters more to your setup.
- Test one anti-aliasing or super-resolution option at a time.
- Adjust color-blind controls and Motion Blur to your own visual preference.
- On PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, complete the console-level 120 Hz or Performance Mode requirement before enabling Fortnite’s 120 FPS toggle.
- If changes do not help, verify files, drivers, background processes, cooling, and GPU assignment before considering hardware changes.
The best final configuration is the one that keeps frame delivery stable while preserving enough sharpness and detail for you to read the scene. Start from the documented baseline, measure in matches, and make only the changes your hardware and display can sustain.
