For a fast, stable PC setup after Fortnite v37.00, use Fullscreen at your monitor’s native resolution, VSync Off, an Unlimited frame-rate limit unless you see tearing, the Performance renderer, View Distance Near, Textures Low, Meshes Low, and 3D Resolution at 100%. Turn on Show FPS, test a repeatable route, and lower 3D Resolution in 10% steps only if your target frame rate is not stable.

This guide covers the PC renderer change in v37.00. It does not promise a universal frame rate: Epic says results depend on your CPU, GPU, memory, cooling and display, and some systems improve only slightly or not at all.

What changed in Fortnite v37.00

Epic’s v37.00 release notes describe an enhanced DirectX 12 Performance Renderer that replaces the previous DirectX 11 Performance Mode. Epic says the new renderer is intended to provide a performance increase and improved stability on certain configurations. That wording matters: the renderer is not a guaranteed upgrade for every PC, so compare frame-time consistency and 1% lows on your own system rather than choosing a mode by name alone.

Epic support still presents Performance as the lower-fidelity option. It can be useful when a higher-fidelity DX12 mode causes crashes, black screens or unstable frame times. Renderer labels and defaults can change in later major updates, so recheck the in-game menu after each substantial patch.

Recommended PC settings

Setting Starting value Why it helps When to change it
Window mode Fullscreen Gives the game direct control of the display and avoids desktop-compositing overhead. Use another mode only when you need convenient alt-tab behavior or a troubleshooting comparison.
Resolution Your monitor’s native resolution Keeps the image sharp and avoids scaling artifacts. Lower the resolution only when the GPU remains the limiting factor after other settings are reduced.
Aspect ratio 16:9 where possible Competitive modes are restricted to 16:9. Non-16:9 displays can show black side bars; do not stretch the image to chase a setting advantage.
VSync Off Usually reduces the display queue and input latency. Turn it on only if eliminating tearing is more important than latency.
Frame-rate limit Unlimited Lets the PC render as many frames as it can. If tearing is distracting, cap at the monitor’s refresh rate. A compatible variable-refresh display can use FreeSync or G-Sync instead.
Rendering mode Performance Uses the enhanced DX12 Performance Renderer and reduces visual workload. Compare a higher-fidelity DX12 mode if your hardware has ample headroom or Performance causes a specific problem.
View Distance Near Epic says players remain clear at Near while distant detail is reduced. Use a farther setting only if long-range visibility is worth the frame-time cost on your system.
Textures Low Reduces video-memory pressure and texture-processing work. Raise it when GPU memory and frame-time headroom are available and clarity matters more than maximum FPS.
Meshes Low Reduces object detail and can free performance. Raise it only after your target FPS is stable; higher geometry can increase GPU and CPU work.
3D Resolution 100% Preserves the selected output resolution while establishing a clear baseline. Lower in 10% steps when the target FPS is not stable. Higher values render more pixels and normally reduce FPS.
Show FPS On Provides an in-game measurement while you test. Leave it on until tuning is complete.
NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency On + Boost, for supported NVIDIA systems Targets lower latency by managing the render queue and GPU behavior. Compare On and On + Boost if heat, power draw or clock stability becomes a concern.

Apply the baseline without introducing new variables

  1. Open Fortnite’s Settings from the lobby and select the video or graphics tab.
  2. Set Window Mode to Fullscreen. Select the monitor’s native resolution. If your screen is not 16:9, expect black side bars in competitive modes rather than trying to force a stretched ratio.
  3. Set VSync to Off and Frame Rate Limit to Unlimited. If tearing appears during a real match, cap the limit at the display’s refresh rate and test again.
  4. Choose Performance as the rendering mode. Restart the game if Fortnite requests it, because changing renderers can alter shader and frame-time behavior after the first launch.
  5. Set View Distance to Near, Textures to Low, and Meshes to Low. Keep effects and post-processing at their lowest available values if those controls are exposed in your build.
  6. Set 3D Resolution to 100% and enable Show FPS. Do not judge performance from the lobby: record FPS in the same game mode and along the same repeatable route.
  7. If you use an NVIDIA GPU, test Reflex Low Latency: On + Boost. Keep the setting that gives the best input response without causing excessive heat or clock instability.
  8. Play or replay the same route for several minutes. Note average FPS, the worst dips you can feel, and whether hitching occurs when turning, entering a busy area or building.

How to tune resolution and frame-rate limits

Why resolution has the largest immediate effect

3D Resolution controls how many pixels Fortnite asks the GPU to render before the image is presented at your selected output resolution. A higher value means more pixels and generally a lower frame rate. Lowering it can produce a large gain on a GPU-limited system, but the image becomes softer. Start at 100% so you know the true baseline, then reduce it in 10% steps and retest after every change. Stop at the highest value that keeps your chosen FPS target during demanding scenes.

Choosing a cap

Unlimited is a useful diagnostic starting point because it reveals the maximum the system can produce. It can also make frame time fluctuate and increase heat. If tearing is visible, cap at the monitor’s refresh rate. A cap does not create additional rendered frames; it simply prevents the game from presenting more frames than the display can use. Variable-refresh technologies such as FreeSync and G-Sync can handle tearing on compatible monitor, GPU and driver combinations, but they still cannot compensate for an unstable game frame rate.

Match the target to the display

A 60 Hz panel cannot show every frame from a 200-FPS render loop. A 120 Hz, 144 Hz or faster gaming monitor gives a high-FPS system more opportunity to show intermediate frames. The monitor itself does not increase Fortnite’s rendered FPS, so upgrade the display only when the PC can already sustain a useful frame rate and you want the corresponding motion clarity and latency benefit.

Performance renderer versus other modes

There is no universal winner. Compare the modes using the same map, route, resolution and cap, and look beyond the number in the top-left corner.

Comparison point Performance (enhanced DX12) Higher-fidelity DX12 Legacy or fallback renderer
Primary goal Lower visual workload and higher FPS on suitable configurations. More visual detail at a greater GPU and sometimes CPU cost. A recovery option when the newer path crashes, shows a black screen or behaves badly; availability can change by version.
Average FPS Often the strongest starting point for low-FPS PCs, but hardware-dependent. Can be lower because more effects and detail are rendered. Must be measured on the individual PC; no universal ranking is published.
1% lows and frame-time stability Can improve when the system was GPU-limited, but renderer changes may produce hitches while shaders settle. May be smoother on a powerful, well-supported configuration, or less stable when the GPU is saturated. Useful as a comparison if the enhanced renderer introduces a problem.
Input latency Lower settings and a stable frame rate generally help, especially with VSync off. Can rise when the GPU is fully queued with effects. Measure rather than assuming; latency depends on the entire render chain.
Long-distance clarity Near view distance and low meshes reduce detail while keeping players identifiable according to Epic’s guidance. Usually presents more environmental detail. Depends on the selected quality settings and the renderer supported by that build.
Best use Competitive play, older hardware and systems that need consistent frame times. Systems with headroom where image quality is a priority. Troubleshooting a crash, black screen or severe instability after a renderer change.

Epic’s published examples show why your result may differ from another player’s: at 720p, one older laptop rose from 24 FPS on low-scalability settings to 61 FPS in Performance Mode, while another rose from 18 to 45 FPS under the same comparison. These are hardware examples, not promises for every CPU or GPU. Epic explicitly notes that the steps may improve performance only slightly or not at all on some systems.

  • up to 180Hz Refresh Rate: Pushing beyond the standard 144Hz, 165Hz gives gamers an edge in visibility as frames transition instantly, leaving behind no blurred images.
  • IPS Panel: The IPS (In-Plane Switching) panel cannot be beat when it comes to consistently delivering top color performance and sharp visibility from multiple viewing angles.
  • AMD FreeSync: With FreeSync, gamers now enjoy smooth video and seamless on the spot movement through their fast paced games. FreeSync is an AMD technology that nearly eliminates tearing and stuttering due to differences between a graphics card's frame rate and a monitor's refresh rate.
  • Edgeless Design: Edgeless Design completely immerses you in all the captivating action and wondrous scenery that 1080P resolution and 165Hz refresh rate have to offer.
  • Multiple Digital Ports: While three HDMI ports each deliver an impressive 144Hz refresh rate, one DisplayPort produces a stunning 165Hz refresh rate, all in FHD resolution.
  1. Confirm the PC is within Fortnite’s requirements. A system below the supported baseline may run the game but cannot be expected to hold a high or stable frame rate.
  2. Verify the installation. In the Epic Games Launcher, open Library, use the three-dot menu for Fortnite, choose Manage, and select Verify. Let the process finish before launching the game again.
  3. Update the graphics driver. Epic identifies outdated drivers as a common source of visual problems and recommends current drivers for the best Fortnite experience. Restart Windows after installing a driver when the installer requests it.
  4. Select the dedicated GPU on a laptop or hybrid PC. In NVIDIA Control Panel, open Manage 3D settings, choose Program Settings, select Fortnite and assign the high-performance NVIDIA processor. AMD systems have the equivalent per-game GPU selection in Radeon settings. Windows graphics preferences can also override the integrated-GPU default, so check both when a laptop is unexpectedly slow.
  5. Close competing programs. Browsers with video, recording tools, overlays, cloud synchronization and other background workloads can consume CPU, GPU, memory or disk bandwidth. Close what you do not need, then retest the same route.
  6. Check heat and airflow. If FPS is acceptable at first but falls after a longer session, inspect vents, fans and dust, and make sure the laptop or desktop has unobstructed airflow. Thermal throttling can lower clocks later in a session even when the initial benchmark looks fine.
  7. Check whether settings are being reverted. If Fortnite changes your options on every launch, open %localappdata%FortniteGameSavedConfigWindowsClientGameUserSettings.ini, right-click the file, choose Properties, clear Read-only, apply the change and set the options again. Do not edit unrelated configuration values.
  8. Allow the renderer to settle. After switching renderers or installing a major update, the first runs can have different hitch behavior while shaders and caches are rebuilt. Compare several repeatable runs rather than judging a single turn or landing.
  9. Remove optional high-resolution textures when storage or streaming is a problem. Epic’s Performance Mode support page says removing those textures saves over 15 GB. The exact checkbox wording can vary in the launcher’s installation options.

Identify whether the limit is the GPU, CPU or memory

What you observe Likely pressure point Useful test
GPU usage stays near its limit, and lowering 3D Resolution raises FPS immediately. GPU workload or video-memory bandwidth. Lower 3D Resolution by 10%, keep the route and cap unchanged, and compare frame time.
GPU usage is modest, but FPS falls in crowded areas or during heavy building activity. CPU simulation, draw-call or game-thread limits. Keep resolution fixed and compare View Distance, Meshes and background CPU programs.
Short freezes coincide with disk activity or memory pressure. RAM or storage streaming. Close memory-heavy programs, confirm free disk space and compare the game on an SSD.
Performance worsens only after extended play. Heat, power limits or fan control. Watch temperatures and clock speeds during the first and later matches and improve airflow.
FPS is high but motion still tears. Presentation timing rather than raw rendering speed. Test a frame cap at the refresh rate or a compatible variable-refresh mode.

Hardware and upgrade priorities

SSD storage

Epic says installing Fortnite and the operating system on an SSD increases read and write speed and reduces loading time. Its low-FPS guidance also associates SSD storage with fewer hitches on older systems. An SSD cannot raise a GPU-limited average FPS by itself, but it can reduce the time spent waiting for assets and the severity of storage-related stalls.

System memory

Epic’s guidance says 6 GB of RAM or more helps older machines fit the game in memory and reduce hitches and stutters. Treat that as a practical floor for the cited older-system advice, not a guarantee that every modern configuration will perform well. Before buying a desktop RAM kit, check the motherboard’s supported memory type, capacity, speed and slot layout; laptop memory may be soldered or require a different module.

Dedicated graphics

A dedicated GPU is not required for Performance Mode, according to Epic, but it can balance the system load and produce a smoother experience. On a laptop with both integrated and dedicated graphics, correct GPU selection is therefore a configuration check before an upgrade decision.

High-refresh display

Epic recommends a gaming display at 120 Hz, 144 Hz or higher for systems capable of high FPS. A 144 Hz gaming monitor is a sensible match for a PC that can sustain frames in that range. It does not make the game render faster, and buying one will not solve a CPU, GPU, thermal or memory bottleneck.

Common mistakes that make FPS tuning worse

  • Lowering output resolution before testing 3D Resolution. This changes scaling and image quality at the same time, making the result harder to interpret.
  • Comparing a lobby number with a match. Lobby scenes do not reproduce the CPU, GPU and streaming load of a real fight.
  • Changing several settings between tests. You lose the ability to identify which option helped or hurt.
  • Assuming Unlimited is always best. It is useful for diagnosis, but a cap can provide steadier frame times, lower heat and less tearing.
  • Chasing visual presets instead of frame times. A higher average FPS with severe dips can feel worse than a slightly lower but stable result.
  • Ignoring the monitor’s refresh rate. Frames above what the display can present may increase heat without improving visible motion.
  • Expecting Performance Mode to fix every bottleneck. Epic’s own examples show large gains on some older laptops, while its support guidance warns that another system may see little or no change.
  • Leaving a configuration file read-only. This can make every launch undo your carefully tested settings.

A repeatable test plan for every future patch

  1. Write down your current resolution, 3D Resolution, renderer, cap and display refresh rate.
  2. Enable Show FPS and choose one familiar route that includes traversal, building and a busy area.
  3. Run that route for several minutes with no other setting changes. Record average FPS and the dips you can feel.
  4. Apply one change, such as Performance mode or a 10% 3D Resolution reduction, then repeat the same route.
  5. Compare frame-time consistency and input feel, not only the highest number.
  6. Keep the setting that meets your target without making players difficult to see, and write down the result so a later update can be compared with the same baseline.

Bottom line for v37.00 and later PC builds

Start with Performance, Fullscreen, native resolution, VSync Off, Unlimited FPS, Near view distance, Low textures and meshes, 100% 3D Resolution and Show FPS. Lower 3D Resolution gradually only when your measured target is not stable. If the update introduced stutter, verify files, update the driver, select the dedicated GPU, close background tasks, check temperatures and correct a read-only GameUserSettings.ini file before replacing hardware. Use a higher-fidelity DX12 mode only when your measured frame times and visual priorities justify it, and treat every published FPS example as hardware-specific rather than a guarantee.
