There is no special “YouTube Live playlist” format or codec. If you mean videos uploaded into a YouTube playlist, use YouTube’s upload guidance: an MP4 file with H.264 video and a supported audio codec such as AAC-LC. If you mean a live stream, choose settings for the ingest protocol and encoder instead—RTMP/RTMPS and HLS have different requirements.
For uploaded videos in a YouTube playlist
A YouTube watch playlist collects videos; it does not add a separate encoding requirement. Each video is uploaded as a file, so follow YouTube’s upload recommendations rather than live-stream ingest settings. The straightforward choice is an MP4 container with H.264 video and AAC-LC audio. YouTube also accepts Opus and Eclipsa Audio for upload audio. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings cover the file requirements.

- Use progressive video and keep the source’s original frame rate.
- For MP4, place the
moovatom at the beginning of the file to help it start quickly. - Do not treat the live-stream bitrate or keyframe guidance as a playlist-upload requirement; those settings apply to an encoder sending a live feed.
For a live stream or its replay
A live stream is encoded for delivery to YouTube using an ingestion protocol. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, with AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube then transcodes the incoming live stream into formats for viewer playback, so you are choosing an ingest configuration—not one codec that every viewer must use. A replay is the resulting video, not a special “playlist codec.” See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

RTMP or RTMPS settings
- Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a frame rate no higher than 60 fps.
- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds if possible; do not exceed four seconds.
- For stereo audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 kbps as recommended advanced settings. For 5.1 audio, it lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps; RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 is supported only with AAC.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
Bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and ingest codec. For example, YouTube’s current settings table lists 10 Mbps at 1080p/30 for AV1 or HEVC and 14 Mbps at 1080p/30 for H.264. These are the figures shown in the live guidance, not a permanent rule; check the current table for your chosen settings.

HLS settings
Choose HLS when your encoder and workflow support YouTube’s HLS requirements. YouTube specifies TS segments lasting one to four seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Supported video codecs are H.264 and HEVC; supported audio codecs are AAC, AC3, and EAC3. HLS generally has higher latency than RTMP because it delivers video in segments. Details are in YouTube’s HLS setup guide.
HDR
For HDR live streaming, YouTube identifies H.265/HEVC as the codec. That codec choice alone does not specify a complete HDR workflow; check YouTube’s current HDR guidance and your encoder’s settings before configuring color and signal parameters.

Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain
Start with YouTube’s recommended bitrate for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, then confirm that your outbound connection can sustain the total stream bitrate. YouTube advises leaving 20% of upload capacity unused as headroom; fluctuations or interruptions in outbound bandwidth can disrupt a live stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Select the resolution, frame rate, and codec your encoder can reliably produce.
- Use YouTube’s bitrate table for that combination rather than copying a value intended for a different codec or frame rate.
- Check the available upload capacity during the hours you plan to stream, and leave the recommended 20% margin.
- Run a test stream and check for dropped frames or interruptions before relying on the setup for a long broadcast.
How to decide
| What you are doing | What to configure | Practical starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Uploading videos to a watch playlist | File container and upload codecs | MP4, H.264 video, AAC-LC audio; preserve progressive scan and the original frame rate. |
| Sending a live feed over RTMP/RTMPS | Ingest codec and encoder settings | H.264, HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. |
| Sending a live feed over HLS | Ingest codecs and segment packaging | H.264 or HEVC video, AAC/AC3/EAC3 audio, and TS segments of one to four seconds. |
| Streaming HDR | HDR ingest codec and the rest of the HDR workflow | YouTube identifies HEVC for HDR; confirm the current HDR-specific settings before configuring the signal. |
Common setup problems
- A playlist upload is rejected or behaves unexpectedly: check the file against YouTube’s upload guidance, including its container, codecs, progressive format, frame rate, and MP4 file layout. A watch playlist itself does not determine the encoding.
- The stream is unstable or drops frames: compare the encoder’s total bitrate with reliable outbound capacity and restore network headroom. YouTube notes that bandwidth disruption can break a stream.
- The ingest does not match the selected protocol: verify the encoder’s codec and audio support against the relevant RTMP/RTMPS or HLS requirements. HLS additionally requires the specified TS segment durations and rolling playlist behavior.
- Audio configuration causes a 5.1 issue over RTMP/RTMPS: YouTube lists AAC as the supported 5.1 option for that protocol; its recommended 5.1 settings are 48 kHz and 384 kbps.
Run a prerecorded YouTube stream without keeping a computer on
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a live YouTube stream, rather than merely organize uploads in a watch playlist, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. See StreamNeo.
