Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe best follow drone depends on what you film. For fast cycling or snow sports, HOVERAir’s X1 PRO and X1 PROMAX publish a 42 km/h (26 mph) maximum auto-follow speed and activity-specific modes. For a small, simple camera drone that launches from your hand, DJI Neo is compelling, but its Follow Me speed is limited to 8 m/s (28.8 km/h) and DJI explicitly states that it has no obstacle sensing.
Those figures come from different manufacturer methods, so they are not a controlled head-to-head test. Treat them as selection clues, not proof that one aircraft will track every route. A follow mode still requires supervision, a suitable environment and a plan for what happens when the subject disappears from view.

Quick picks by filming goal
| Best fit | Model or range | Why it fits | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fast biking and other dynamic activity | HOVERAir X1 PRO or X1 PROMAX | HOVERAir publishes a 42 km/h (26 mph) maximum auto-follow speed and provides activity modes for biking and snow sports. | The 42 km/h figure is a manufacturer maximum measured in a stated windless test; it is not an independent real-world result. |
| Simple palm launch and compact travel filming | DJI Neo | Approximately 135 g, with palm takeoff and landing and Follow Me among its intelligent modes. | Follow Me is limited to 8 m/s, and the Neo User Manual says, "DJI Neo does not support obstacle sensing." |
| Choosing between several follow styles | X1 PRO/PROMAX | HOVERAir describes rear, side and front following, plus modes tuned either for dynamic movement or smoother video. | Sensor and detection features differ by model; check the current model-specific comparison before buying. |
| Controlled, open-area family or vlog clips | DJI Neo | The app or compatible controller can select Follow and other preset modes, making short, repeatable shots approachable. | Neo may hover if the subject leaves its camera view, so a lost track does not mean the aircraft will return automatically. |
No single product earns a universal “best” title from the available specifications. The right choice is the one whose speed ceiling, tracking direction, launch method and sensing limitations match your route.
What a follow drone actually does
A follow drone automates the pilot’s framing task: you identify a subject, select a follow mode and move while the aircraft attempts to keep you in the shot. Automation does not remove the pilot’s responsibilities. You still need to check the launch area, keep the aircraft in sight where local rules require it, watch for people and objects, and be ready to stop the flight.

DJI Neo’s Follow Me behavior
DJI’s Neo User Manual v1.2 (2024) describes Neo following the subject from behind while recording. If the subject leaves the camera’s field of view, Neo can hover after losing the subject. DJI recommends an open, unobstructed area with sufficient lighting. These details matter on a trail: a bend, tree, rock outcrop or sudden shadow can interrupt the framing even when the aircraft itself is still airborne.
HOVERAir’s directional and activity modes
HOVERAir describes rear, side and front following, along with activity-specific options for biking and snow sports. Its product information distinguishes modes intended for dynamic following from modes intended to produce smoother video. A mode label describes the intended shot; it does not guarantee tracking through an occlusion, a sharp turn or a crowded scene.
Speed, flight time and sensing: the numbers that change the decision
| Specification | DJI Neo | HOVERAir X1 PRO/PROMAX | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum follow speed | 8 m/s (28.8 km/h or about 17.9 mph) horizontal speed in Follow Me, DJI User Manual v1.2 (2024) | 42 km/h (26 mph) maximum auto-follow speed, HOVERAir comparison accessed October 13, 2026 | Different manufacturers and test contexts; not a controlled comparison. |
| Maximum flight time | Not stated in the cited material | 16 minutes maximum, HOVERAir comparison accessed October 13, 2026 | A stated maximum, not guaranteed recording time in wind, cold or repeated climbs. |
| Obstacle sensing | None; DJI says Neo does not support obstacle sensing | Detection and sensor features are listed by model in HOVERAir’s comparison; verify the exact X1 PRO or PROMAX column | Follow automation should never be treated as collision avoidance. |
| Launch and control | Palm takeoff and landing; mode button or app, with some intelligent modes requiring the app or accessories | Product-specific control and mode behavior; confirm the current package and instructions | Convenience varies with the package you purchase. |
HOVERAir’s 42 km/h test condition is specifically described as windless, starting at ground level and ascending to 1.5 metres. That makes the number useful for understanding the product’s stated ceiling, but not for predicting speed on a gusty hillside. DJI’s 8 m/s value is a Follow Me mode limit, not a claim about every Neo flight mode.
Which follow drone suits each activity?
Cycling and running
Speed is the first filter. Compare your planned pace with the published follow limit, then leave margin for acceleration, corners and gradients. HOVERAir’s stated 42 km/h ceiling gives the X1 PRO/PROMAX more headroom on paper than Neo’s 8 m/s Follow Me limit. That does not make a fast route automatically safe: trees, signs, other riders and changing terrain still require an attentive pilot and a route with clear escape space.
For a slower ride on a broad, empty path, Neo’s compact palm launch may be more valuable than extra top speed. Use a short test pass before committing to a long take, and avoid assuming that a camera lock will survive a turn behind vegetation.

Hiking and travel
Travel users usually value low setup friction and packability. DJI lists Neo at approximately 135 g and supports palm takeoff and landing, which can simplify a quick establishing shot. The trade-off is that every launch still needs an unobstructed, adequately lit area and a recovery plan if the subject leaves frame.
HOVERAir’s directional modes can help when you want a side or front profile rather than a conventional rear chase. Check the exact mode description before setting off; a smoother mode and a dynamic mode are different creative choices, not interchangeable speed settings.

Snow sports
HOVERAir specifically describes snow-sport modes, so it is the more directly targeted option in the supplied product information. Snow creates additional practical variables: bright reflections can alter how a camera sees the subject, while cold can reduce usable battery time. The published 16-minute figure remains a maximum, not a promise for a cold mountain session. Keep the flight conservative and plan several short runs rather than relying on one long take.
Vlogging and family activity
For a presenter walking, jogging or demonstrating an activity in a clear park, Neo’s palm workflow can reduce the amount of equipment involved. For a family scene, however, “easy” must not become “unattended.” Keep nonparticipants away from the launch and flight path, maintain visual awareness and stop if children, pets or bystanders enter the operating area.
DJI Neo: strengths, limits and a practical setup
What Neo does well
- Its approximately 135 g body and palm takeoff/landing suit quick, low-bulk filming.
- Follow Me is available alongside other intelligent modes.
- Operation can use the mode button or the app; DJI notes that some intelligent modes require the app or accessories.
- The compact format is useful when you want to carry a camera drone without a conventional launch pad.
The limitation that should decide your route
Neo has no obstacle sensing. The manual’s exact wording is, "DJI Neo does not support obstacle sensing." That means the aircraft cannot be recommended as an autonomous collision-avoidance system. Do not plan a follow shot through trees, around blind corners, between buildings or over a crowd on the assumption that Neo will detect and avoid an object.

Neo Follow Me workflow
- Choose an appropriate location. Select an open, unobstructed area with sufficient light, as DJI recommends. Walk the intended line and identify branches, poles, wires, slopes and people before launching.
- Prepare the aircraft and control method. Fit a charged battery and use the mode button or the app. If the mode you want is app- or accessory-dependent, confirm that requirement before leaving home.
- Start with a low-risk test. Launch from a clear surface or your palm as instructed, select Follow Me and move slowly. Confirm that the aircraft keeps you in view before attempting a faster pass.
- Stay visible and monitor the aircraft. DJI recommends visual line of sight. Keep watching the aircraft, not only the phone preview, and be ready to cancel the mode or land.
- Plan for a lost subject. If you move out of the camera’s field of view, Neo may hover. Stop moving, regain a clear view and recover the aircraft rather than assuming it will continue the route.
- End with room to land. Return to a clear landing area before the battery becomes critical. Palm landing is convenient, but use the method and conditions specified for your aircraft and keep hands clear of moving components.
HOVERAir X1 PRO and X1 PROMAX: what the published figures mean
Performance for dynamic activities
HOVERAir’s comparison lists 42 km/h (26 mph) maximum auto-follow speed for the X1 PRO and PROMAX. The company describes the test as windless, beginning at ground level and ascending to 1.5 metres. Because that is a manufacturer test condition, use it to screen out an obviously slow option, not to promise a 42 km/h chase on every ride.
Battery planning
The same comparison lists a maximum flight time of 16 minutes. Maximum flight time is affected by movement, wind, temperature, climbs and the amount of reserve you keep for landing. Treat it as a ceiling for planning, not as 16 minutes of guaranteed follow footage. Short, repeatable takes are safer than starting a single run with no reserve.
Mode selection
HOVERAir’s US information describes bike and snow-sport modes and distinguishes dynamic following from smoother video. Rear, side and front directions let you choose whether the activity or the person’s expression is the visual priority. Read the mode’s current instructions and check the exact model: a feature shown for one column in a comparison table should not automatically be attributed to the other.
Camera claims
A TechRadar buying guide characterizes the X1 Pro as a 4K drone and discusses image and video differences between it and Neo. That is a secondary editorial assessment, not a substitute for the current model specification or an independent camera test. If resolution, frame rate, stabilization or low-light quality is your deciding factor, verify those settings for the exact model and recording mode before purchase.
How to choose between Neo and X1 PRO/PROMAX
| Your priority | Lean toward | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum published follow speed | HOVERAir X1 PRO/PROMAX | 42 km/h manufacturer maximum versus Neo’s 8 m/s Follow Me limit, with different test contexts. |
| Smallest, simplest launch routine | DJI Neo | Approximately 135 g and palm takeoff/landing reduce setup steps. |
| Snow-sport or bike-specific presets | HOVERAir X1 PRO/PROMAX | Those activities are explicitly described in HOVERAir’s mode information. |
| Clearly documented safety limitation | Either, with conservative operation | Neo has no obstacle sensing; HOVERAir sensor behavior must be checked for the exact model. Neither should be treated as unsupervised collision avoidance. |
| Accessory flexibility for a Neo kit | DJI Neo, after checking compatibility | DJI lists controller, battery and ND-filter categories, but package contents and SKU compatibility need confirmation at purchase. |
Use the table as a decision filter rather than a ranking. If your route contains obstacles or people, redesign the route first; changing models cannot turn an obstructed flight into a risk-free one.

A repeatable filming checklist
- Route: Is the complete planned path open, visible and adequately lit?
- People and privacy: Have bystanders been kept clear, and are you respecting local privacy expectations?
- Mode: Does the selected mode match the direction and pace you need?
- Speed: Is your expected pace below the aircraft’s published mode limit with room for changes?
- Battery: Are batteries charged, and have you reserved time to return and land?
- Control: Do you know how to stop the mode, regain control and land?
- Visibility: Can you maintain visual awareness of the aircraft for the entire take?
- Recovery: If the subject leaves frame, where will the aircraft hover or land, and how will you approach it?
Common problems and what to change
The drone loses you in a turn
Reduce the turn angle and speed, widen the route and keep the subject in the camera’s view. Neo may hover after losing the subject, so stop and recover rather than continuing out of sight.
The aircraft reaches its speed ceiling
Slow the subject, choose a mode intended for the activity or select a model with a higher published ceiling. Do not treat a maximum specification as a target you must reach; a lower, steady pace produces more usable footage and more reaction time.
Tracking becomes unreliable in a dim or cluttered area
Move to better light and an open background. DJI specifically recommends sufficient lighting and an unobstructed environment for Neo. Do not try to compensate for poor visibility by flying closer to people or obstacles.
You cannot tell which sensor features your HOVERAir model has
Use the current HOVERAir comparison and read the exact X1 PRO or X1 PROMAX column. Sensor and detection claims are model-specific; do not infer them from the family name or from a different product’s description.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA short session runs out of usable battery
Plan around less than the published maximum, especially in wind, cold or repeated climbs. Carry compatible spare batteries only after confirming the exact SKU, and schedule a landing reserve instead of filming until the aircraft forces a return.

Accessories, packages and ongoing ownership
DJI’s support material lists controller, battery and ND-filter categories for Neo. Those categories do not prove that every accessory fits every package. Check the exact bundle, regional listing and compatibility information at the time of purchase. A controller may change how you operate, while an ND filter changes exposure options; neither adds obstacle sensing to Neo.
The supplied specifications do not establish a complete accessory or replacement-cost comparison for HOVERAir. Base your budget on the exact aircraft, batteries, charger and any required control device shown in the current package, rather than assuming that a promotional bundle includes everything.
Safety, law and privacy
Follow applicable local aircraft rules, including requirements that may cover registration, operating areas, visual line of sight, altitude, people and privacy. The rules vary by jurisdiction, and the product material cited here does not establish a jurisdiction-specific legal checklist.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Regardless of model, keep the aircraft under active supervision. Neo’s lack of obstacle sensing is explicit, and the presence of a detection feature on a particular HOVERAir model would not eliminate the need to watch the aircraft. Avoid flights over uninvolved people, respect private property and stop when visibility, lighting or your ability to maintain control deteriorates.
Bottom line: match the drone to the route
Choose HOVERAir X1 PRO or X1 PROMAX when your priority is a manufacturer-published 42 km/h auto-follow ceiling and dedicated biking or snow-sport modes. Choose DJI Neo when palm launch, approximately 135 g portability and a straightforward Follow Me workflow matter more than top speed. In both cases, treat follow as an assistive camera function, not a pilot replacement: test the mode in an open, well-lit area, maintain visual awareness and leave enough space and battery to recover safely.
