There is no universal Firefox replacement. Choose Brave if you want aggressive privacy protections enabled by default alongside Chromium desktop extensions. Choose DuckDuckGo Browser if simple privacy controls and encrypted sync matter most, provided its platform-specific sync fields cover your devices. Keep Firefox if its end-to-end-encrypted sync, desktop add-ons, or particular extensions are essential.
Start with your constraints, not a browser label
Replacing Firefox usually means preserving three things at once: protection from tracking, access to the extensions you rely on, and continuity between phones and computers. Those goals overlap, but no alternative handles them identically. A browser can have strong default blocking yet offer fewer mobile extensions; another can sync selected data with encryption but omit the category you use most.

Before installing anything, write down the devices you actually use and the data you need available on each one. Include desktop operating systems, Android or iOS phones and tablets, and whether a work computer is locked to a particular browser. Then list your must-have extensions by name. Desktop compatibility does not prove that an extension exists for mobile, and a browser’s sync feature may not support every field on every operating system.
Recommended Free Tools
- Privacy defaults: What is blocked before you change settings—third-party trackers, cross-site cookies, fingerprinting, or none of these?
- Extension fit: Does the exact extension have a supported version for your desktop and mobile platforms?
- Sync fit: Which data categories synchronize, is the data end-to-end encrypted, and what account or recovery steps are required?
Use those three checks to make a conditional choice rather than accepting a blanket “best browser” ranking. Privacy results also depend on configuration, platform, and test date, so a published score is a snapshot rather than a permanent verdict.

Brave: the closest fit when privacy defaults and Chromium extensions lead
What Brave enables by default
Brave says its Shields feature blocks trackers, cross-site cookie tracking, and fingerprinting by default. It also describes changes to the Chromium base intended to reduce data collection. That combination is attractive when you want to open a new installation and receive meaningful blocking without first tuning a long list of preferences.
“By default” does not mean every site behaves the same way. Shields can affect logins, embedded media, payment flows, and other scripts. If a site breaks, use the site-specific Shields control to adjust protection temporarily, then restore the stricter setting after testing. Keep a written record of exceptions so a troubleshooting change does not silently become a permanent reduction in protection.
Desktop extension compatibility
Brave is built on Chromium, and Brave says Chrome extensions work in Brave. That gives desktop users a large starting pool, but it is not a promise that every extension will function perfectly. Extensions can depend on browser-specific APIs, enterprise policies, or a particular update level. Check the extension’s listing for supported browsers, review its requested permissions, and test critical workflows before removing Firefox.
Mobile is a separate decision. Desktop extension compatibility does not establish that the same extension can be installed on Android or iOS. If your workflow depends on an extension while traveling, test that phone or tablet path independently instead of assuming the desktop result carries over.

Brave Sync
Brave describes client-side encryption for Brave Sync and says it can synchronize profiles between desktop and mobile. During setup, read the current list of synchronized categories and the recovery instructions shown by your installation. A sync design can protect data in transit and at rest while still leaving you responsible for the recovery material; losing that material may mean losing access to the synced set.
Do not treat a synced profile as a backup. Export bookmarks and any other data you cannot afford to lose, and retain an independent password-manager or account-recovery plan. Sync is intended to keep devices aligned, not to provide historical versions after an accidental deletion.

DuckDuckGo Browser: a simpler privacy model with platform-specific sync
Privacy controls and platform differences
DuckDuckGo’s privacy comparison lists protections based on default settings and notes that protections vary by platform. Its page was last verified in September 2026, so treat that date as the reference point for the comparison rather than assuming every platform has identical behavior after a later update.
The practical implication is to evaluate the phone and computer separately. A feature available in the Windows or macOS browser may not exist in the iOS or Android build, and a system-level restriction can change what a browser is able to block. Check the settings and privacy dashboard on each device you intend to use.
What Sync & Backup encrypts
DuckDuckGo says Sync & Backup encrypts data on the device before uploading it. The described categories include bookmarks, autofill data, email-protection settings, and Duck.ai chats. Its support documentation lists credit-card syncing for Windows, macOS, and iOS, and identity syncing for Windows and macOS.

Those fields are not universal across platforms. If you use an Android phone, for example, the documented credit-card and identity coverage does not establish that the same data will sync there. Confirm the current support list during setup and avoid assuming that a category visible on one device will appear on another.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →All-or-nothing setup and account requirements
DuckDuckGo describes the encrypted sync model as all-or-nothing and says no account is needed. That can reduce account-management overhead, but it also means you should decide whether the complete supported set is acceptable before enabling it. If you only want bookmarks synchronized and do not want autofill or chat data included, verify whether the current interface permits category-level selection; the documented description characterizes the feature as all-or-nothing.
Record the recovery information exactly as displayed. Device-side encryption is useful only if you can restore the encrypted data on a replacement device. Store recovery material in a secure location that is separate from the phone or computer being synchronized.
Firefox Sync as the baseline you may be giving up
Categories Mozilla says Sync can cover
Mozilla says Firefox Sync can include open tabs, history, bookmarks, logins and passwords, addresses, payment methods, add-ons, and settings. Mozilla also describes the data as end-to-end encrypted before it leaves the browser. This broad category list is why Firefox remains a useful benchmark even when you are considering a move.
Make an inventory before switching. If you depend on synchronized open tabs, saved addresses, or payment methods, identify where each category will live afterward. A browser that syncs bookmarks but not open tabs may require a manual handoff; a browser that syncs passwords differently may require an export and re-import or a separate password manager.

The desktop-only limitation for add-ons and settings
Mozilla’s documentation states that extensions and settings synchronize only between desktop Firefox versions. A phone can still synchronize other supported categories, but it should not be expected to reproduce the desktop add-on environment. This limitation is a useful comparison point: alternatives may offer Chromium desktop extensions or built-in mobile protections, yet neither automatically recreates Firefox’s exact add-on and settings workflow on a phone.
What the dated mobile test snapshot shows—and what it cannot prove
The UK Competition and Markets Authority appendix reproduced PrivacyTests.org mobile results retrieved on 17 September 2024. The passed-test counts were:
| Browser | Android passed tests | iOS passed tests |
|---|---|---|
| Brave | 88 | 78 |
| DuckDuckGo Browser | 36 | 52 |
| Firefox | 30 | 35 |
These figures are a dated snapshot retrieved in 2024 and reproduced in a 2025 CMA appendix. They are not a current ranking, a complete measure of safety, or a prediction of how your configured browser will behave. The same appendix says iOS had more unsupported features overall than Android, which is another reason not to compare the platform totals as if they were identical tests.
Use the snapshot as a prompt to investigate, not as a purchasing score. Check the current test methodology, the browser version, the operating system, and which features were unsupported. A higher passed-test count in one snapshot does not establish faster performance, stronger account security, better usability, or superior protection against every tracking technique.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to choose by device mix and must-have extension
Choose Brave when these conditions match
- You want tracker, cross-site-cookie, and fingerprinting protections active immediately after installation.
- Your essential extensions are available for Chromium-based desktop browsers.
- You need a profile-sync option that Brave says can connect desktop and mobile devices.
- You are willing to test mobile support separately and manage sync recovery material.
Choose DuckDuckGo Browser when these conditions match
- You prefer a simpler privacy interface and accept that protections differ by platform.
- Your important synced data fits the documented categories.
- You use Windows, macOS, and iOS for the documented credit-card field, or Windows and macOS for the documented identity field.
- An all-or-nothing encrypted sync model is acceptable and you can protect the recovery information.
Stay with Firefox, or run a staged transition, when these conditions match
- A required extension has no verified equivalent in the alternative browser.
- You rely on Firefox’s combination of open-tab, history, bookmark, password, address, payment, add-on, and settings synchronization.
- Your organization or workflow requires desktop Firefox add-ons and settings to remain consistent.
- You cannot yet confirm how your phone’s operating system handles the replacement browser’s privacy features.
A safe migration procedure
1. Build a data and extension inventory
- List every device, operating system, and browser profile you use.
- Mark each Firefox extension as essential, useful, or disposable.
- Record the Firefox data categories you currently sync: tabs, history, bookmarks, logins, addresses, payment methods, add-ons, and settings.
- Identify data that must remain in a password manager or another independent backup rather than relying on browser sync.
2. Verify the replacement before importing
- Install the candidate browser on one non-critical device first.
- Check the exact extension listing and test sign-in, editing, downloads, and any security-sensitive action it performs.
- Open the privacy settings on desktop and mobile. Note which protections are enabled by default and which require an exception.
- Review the sync categories and platform matrix shown by the current release. Treat vendor descriptions as product documentation, not as proof that your particular extension or site will work.
3. Export and protect irreplaceable data
- Export bookmarks using the browser’s current export command and keep the file in a protected location.
- Confirm that passwords, payment details, and addresses are available through their intended secure store before deleting or disabling Firefox.
- Save recovery material for the new browser’s encrypted sync in a separate secure location.
- Keep Firefox installed and signed in until the replacement has passed your real-world checks on every important device.
4. Enable sync deliberately
- Start with the smallest data set that meets your needs when the interface permits category selection.
- If the service is described as all-or-nothing, read the complete category list and decide whether every included field is acceptable.
- Pair a second device and confirm that the expected bookmarks, tabs, autofill fields, or other supported data actually arrive.
- Test a change in both directions, then verify what happens after signing out, reinstalling, or adding a replacement device.
5. Remove the old browser only after a rollback test
- Disconnect the new browser from one device temporarily and confirm you still possess local exports and recovery information.
- Open your essential sites and run the complete extension workflow again.
- Check that privacy exceptions are limited to the sites that need them.
- Only then make the replacement your default browser. Retain Firefox until you are certain no unsynchronized category or extension is still needed.
Common failure modes and fixes
An extension is listed as compatible but does not work
Confirm that you installed the official extension, that its permissions are allowed, and that the site is not being altered by a privacy shield. Test in a clean profile to separate extension conflicts from browser behavior. If the extension depends on Firefox-specific APIs, keep Firefox for that task instead of weakening the replacement browser globally.
Best Value
A site breaks after enabling stronger blocking
Use the browser’s per-site control to identify the minimum exception required. Try allowing one category at a time, reload, and retest the transaction. Do not disable all privacy protections across every site to repair one broken checkout or login.
Sync works on a computer but not on a phone
Compare the documented platform support for the missing category. DuckDuckGo’s listed credit-card support covers Windows, macOS, and iOS, while identity syncing is listed for Windows and macOS; those statements do not establish equivalent Android support. Brave’s desktop-to-mobile description likewise does not prove that every profile field or extension is available on every mobile operating system.
You lose access after replacing a device
Follow the browser’s documented recovery flow and use the recovery material saved during setup. If the service uses device-side or client-side encryption, the provider may not be able to restore data without that material. This is an expected security trade-off, not evidence that the browser has retained an unencrypted copy for you.
Imported bookmarks appear, but history or tabs do not
Bookmarks are often portable even when live tabs and history are not. Keep Firefox available during the transition, copy open-tab URLs manually when necessary, and confirm which categories the new browser actually supports before closing the old profile.
Privacy and sync checklist for annual re-evaluation
- Record the browser version and operating-system version when you test.
- Recheck default protections after major updates; defaults and platform capabilities can change.
- Review extension permissions and remove extensions you no longer use.
- Test sync on every device rather than assuming a desktop result applies to mobile.
- Refresh exported bookmarks and recovery information after major account changes.
- Interpret independent test counts with their retrieval date and unsupported-feature notes.
- Keep a fallback browser or export for critical work until the replacement has proved reliable.
Bottom line: match the browser to the compromise you accept
Brave is the most direct Firefox alternative for a reader who values strong privacy defaults and Chromium-based desktop extension compatibility. DuckDuckGo Browser is compelling when uncomplicated controls and encrypted sync fit the reader’s exact platforms and data needs. Firefox remains the benchmark for a broad, end-to-end-encrypted sync set and its established desktop add-on workflow.
The decisive step is not choosing a brand in the abstract. Verify your must-have extension, inspect the sync categories on each operating system, and test the privacy behavior on the sites you actually use. That process produces a safer replacement than any universal ranking.
