If you like the Final Fantasy games that feel less conventional or less often recommended, choose your next game by what you want from the series: tactical battles and customization, a numbered RPG with unusual convenience options, political fantasy, a more overtly fantastical adventure, or a dungeon-focused spin-off. There is no official ranking of which entries are underrated; the label is subjective. These five games are useful alternatives within a franchise whose official catalogue includes numbered entries I–XVI as well as additional games.
For tactical, turn-based combat, start with Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles. For a numbered RPG with optional ways to ease older design friction, consider Final Fantasy VIII Remastered. Choose Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age for a resistance story set against an occupying power, or Final Fantasy IX for a more overtly fantastical, character-focused journey. If you are open to a different subgenre, Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon EVERY BUDDY! offers a dungeon-based alternative.

How to choose your next Final Fantasy
The most useful distinction is not whether one game is objectively more overlooked than another. It is what kind of experience you want. The recommendations below span a tactical strategy game, three numbered role-playing games, and a spin-off with a different dungeon loop. Their official descriptions support those differences, but do not establish a quality ranking.
| Game | Best fit if you want | Notable feature or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles | Tactical, turn-based battles and character customization | Over 20 jobs and 300 abilities; includes enhanced and classic versions |
| Final Fantasy VIII Remastered | A less conventional numbered entry with optional convenience features | Optional Battle Assist, No Encounters, and 3x Speed Boost |
| Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age | Political fantasy and resistance to an occupying power | Its official description centers Princess Ashe and Vaan |
| Final Fantasy IX | An overtly fantastical setting and a character-focused journey | Its story involves Zidane, Garnet, and their companions |
| Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon EVERY BUDDY! | A spin-off rather than a conventional numbered RPG | Randomly generated dungeons, a buddy system, and local co-op |
Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles: best for tactical combat
Why it fits
Pick Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles if you want battles to be tactical and turn-based, with character customization as a major part of the appeal. Square Enix describes combat in which terrain matters, alongside a job system with more than 20 jobs and 300 abilities. That makes it the clearest choice here for someone asking which Final Fantasy game has the most explicit job-and-ability focus in this set.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is a different kind of starting point from a numbered Final Fantasy RPG. If what you value is planning around the battlefield and developing characters through a range of jobs and abilities, the distinction is a feature. If you want the numbered-RPG structure instead, look to VIII, IX, or XII below.
Enhanced and classic versions
The release includes an enhanced version with visual, interface, dialogue, and voice changes, as well as quality-of-life improvements. It also includes a classic version. Having both gives you a choice between the enhanced presentation and the classic edition, rather than requiring you to treat one version as the only way to play. The announcement does not specify every individual quality-of-life change, so check the edition details on the storefront for the exact features available on your platform.
Platforms and announced price
Square Enix announced availability on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Steam Deck. The announcement listed a price of $49.99; treat that as the announcement’s price, not a guarantee of the current price in a particular store or region. Check the live storefront for current pricing, edition details, and format. The announcement confirms platform availability but does not establish a particular physical edition or an Amazon listing.

Final Fantasy VIII Remastered: best for optional convenience features
Why it fits
Final Fantasy VIII Remastered suits a player curious about a less conventional numbered entry who also wants the option to soften some friction associated with an older design. Square Enix describes newly rendered visuals and three optional features: Battle Assist, No Encounters, and 3x Speed Boost. Those options give players ways to adjust parts of the experience; they do not change the fact that this is a numbered Final Fantasy RPG rather than a tactical strategy game.
The features are optional, so they are most relevant if you want flexibility rather than a single prescribed way to play. The available description names the settings but does not detail their exact effects or how each is activated. Consult the game’s current platform-specific instructions if you need those particulars.
Platforms and a physical bundle
Square Enix’s 2019 announcement listed Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Steam, and Xbox One. Because that list dates from 2019, it should not be treated as a complete statement of current regional availability; check the storefront for your region and platform before buying.

Square Enix also announced a North American physical Nintendo Switch release of Final Fantasy VII (Original) + Final Fantasy VIII Remastered Twin Pack, with a stated release date of December 9, 2025 and an announcement price of $39.99. This is a bundle, not an VIII Remastered-only cartridge. Since the announced date has passed, confirm current stock, region, and edition details with the retailer before relying on a listing. The announcement price is not a statement of today’s price.
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age: best for political fantasy
Why it fits
Choose Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age if political fantasy and a story about resistance to an occupying power are the draw. Square Enix’s description centers Princess Ashe and Vaan. That framing makes XII a distinct choice from VIII’s convenience-feature appeal and IX’s overtly fantastical, character-focused journey.
Square Enix’s 2019 page listed PlayStation 4, Steam, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. That is historical platform information, not a definitive current availability list. Store availability can vary by region and may change, so verify the live storefront for the system you intend to use.

For context only, Square Enix reported on April 30, 2019 that Final Fantasy XII had sold over 6 million units worldwide. That is a publisher-reported sales figure from 2019; it does not establish whether the game is underrated, nor does it describe current sales.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Final Fantasy IX: best for an overtly fantastical journey
Why it fits
Final Fantasy IX is the recommendation for a reader seeking a more overtly fantastical world and a character-focused journey. Square Enix describes a story of love, war, and betrayal involving Zidane, Garnet, and their companions. If that combination of fantasy setting and an ensemble of named characters is closer to what you want than political resistance or tactical battles, IX is the best match among these choices.

Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon EVERY BUDDY!: best for a spin-off dungeon loop
Why it fits
If you are open to leaving the numbered-RPG format, Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon EVERY BUDDY! offers a different subgenre. Square Enix describes randomly generated dungeons, a buddy system, and local co-op. Those are the defining reasons to consider it here: the dungeon structure and buddy features offer a different kind of experience from the tactical battles or story-led numbered RPGs above.
Square Enix listed PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. Check the current regional storefront for availability, price, and edition details; the platform list in the cited page is not a guarantee of current stock or service availability.
Which one should you play first?
Choose by the experience you want
- Choose The Ivalice Chronicles if tactical, turn-based battles, terrain-aware combat, and job-and-ability customization are your priorities. It is a good place to start if you want Final Fantasy’s tactical side, but it is not the numbered-RPG option in this list.
- Choose VIII Remastered if you want to explore a less conventional numbered entry and value having optional convenience features available.
- Choose XII: The Zodiac Age if political fantasy and resistance to an occupying power are the strongest draws.
- Choose IX if an overtly fantastical world and a journey focused on its characters sound more appealing.
- Choose Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon EVERY BUDDY! if you want a spin-off built around randomly generated dungeons, with a buddy system and local co-op.
Check format and region before buying
Platform lists are not equally current. The Tactics announcement names platforms including newer systems, while the listed platform information for VIII, IX, and XII comes from 2019. Treat those older lists as useful starting points, not proof that a particular edition is currently sold in your region. The physical Switch Twin Pack is specifically a North American bundle of VII (Original) and VIII Remastered, not a standalone VIII cartridge. For all five games, confirm the current store listing, platform, edition, region, and price before purchasing.

“Underrated” is a reader’s framing, not an official Square Enix category or an objective measure. The recommendations are not ranked by sales, review scores, or popularity. They are alternatives chosen for specific preferences: a tactical combat system, convenience options in a remaster, political fantasy, a more overtly fantastical story, or a spin-off dungeon structure. Pick the one that matches the kind of game you want next rather than treating this list as a verdict on the entire series.
