Best Final Fantasy 14 Graphics Settings for Stable FPS on PC

There is no single Final Fantasy XIV preset that guarantees a steady frame rate on every PC. The dependable approach is to test at the resolution you actually use, lower the most demanding controls one at a time, choose a cap your system can sustain, and then verify it in real gameplay. Square Enix’s free Dawntrail Official Benchmark gives you a repeatable baseline, but its score is not a promise of identical performance in every zone, raid, or crowded city.

What “stable FPS” should mean in FFXIV

A stable frame rate is one the PC can maintain through normal play, not the highest number briefly shown in an empty scene. Pick a target that matches your display and the game you actually play: 30 fps for a conservative target, 60 fps for a common desktop goal, the monitor’s refresh rate when your hardware has sufficient headroom, or unlimited only when you have tested that the frame rate does not fluctuate uncomfortably.

The Windows and Mac graphics menu includes frame-rate choices for unlimited, the main display refresh rate, 60 fps, and 30 fps. Those choices are limits, not performance modes. A limit cannot create power that the hardware does not have. In its Patch 7.0 notes, Square Enix explains the same principle while discussing the 120-fps option on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S: “Please note this is only a change to maximum frame rate. This setting will not ensure your system runs at a steady frame rate.” The cited example is console-specific, but the warning is useful when selecting a PC cap. Read the Patch 7.0 notes.

Check whether your PC meets the current Windows baseline

Square Enix’s Windows requirements page lists the following tiers as of July 17, 2025. It also warns that requirements can change, so check the page again after major expansions or patches. These are compatibility categories, not guarantees of a particular FPS.

Tier Operating system Processor Memory Graphics Storage Target resolution listed by Square Enix
Minimum Windows 11 64-bit Intel Core i5-8400 or higher 8 GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (4 GB) or AMD Radeon RX 480 (4 GB) or higher Hard disk with at least 140 GB available 1280×720
Recommended Windows 11 64-bit Intel Core i7-9700 or higher 16 GB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 (6 GB) or AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT (6 GB) or higher SSD with at least 140 GB available 1920×1080

Use the official system-requirements page for the current table. A machine near the minimum may need a lower resolution or a lower cap; a machine above the recommended tier still needs to be tested at its chosen resolution, because the requirements page does not promise 60 fps, a refresh-rate target, or performance in a particular duty.

Use this repeatable setup process

1. Record the variables that determine your target

Before changing options, note the GPU model and memory, CPU, installed RAM, monitor resolution and refresh rate, and the frame-rate cap you want. Also note whether you use one monitor or several and whether the game is currently set to a custom profile. This gives every benchmark run a meaningful comparison point.

2. Match the benchmark to your intended display resolution

Download and run the Dawntrail Official Benchmark. Its launcher exposes several display resolutions, five presets, and up to three saved custom presets. It can import the graphics settings from your installed game, which is the easiest way to measure your current configuration before changing it.

Run the complete sequence rather than judging a single scene. The benchmark lasts about six minutes and shows an FPS performance graph during playback. Save the score and the settings used. A result made at 1280×720 cannot be compared directly with one made at 1920×1080, and a high preset is not equivalent to a custom profile with different scaling or shadows.

3. Set a sensible first cap

Start with 60 fps if your display is 60 Hz and the benchmark shows clear headroom. Choose 30 fps when the system cannot hold 60 consistently or when you prefer steadier delivery over sharper motion. Use the main display refresh-rate option only after testing that the PC can sustain it in demanding scenes. Leave unlimited for troubleshooting or for a system that has been verified at the desired refresh rate; it can otherwise make frame-time swings more obvious.

4. Change one demanding control at a time

Square Enix documents the available controls and warns that higher graphics and resolution settings increase system load, but it does not publish a universal ranking of which toggle is most expensive. The practical order below is therefore a controlled troubleshooting method, not an official performance ranking. Change one item, rerun the benchmark, and keep the change only if it improves the result without an unacceptable image-quality loss.

  1. 3D resolution scaling: Lower the render scale if the native resolution is too demanding. This reduces the internal rendering workload while retaining the monitor’s output resolution.
  2. FSR or DLSS, when available: Use the upscaler supported by your graphics card if you need more headroom. Compare the result with native rendering at the same output resolution, looking for blur, shimmering, or loss of fine detail.
  3. Dynamic resolution and its thresholds: Enable it when you prefer the game to vary internal resolution rather than miss the selected cap. Set thresholds that match your target and confirm the visual change is acceptable during motion.
  4. GTAO quality: Reduce ambient-occlusion quality if you need another performance step. Check dark corners, contact shadows, and character grounding after each change.
  5. Shadow quality: Lower shadow quality when frame rate remains below target. Inspect outdoor scenes and large groups because shadows are most noticeable there.
  6. Other image-quality controls: Adjust texture resolution and anti-aliasing after the scaling, GTAO, and shadow tests. Texture resolution affects clarity and memory use; TSCMAA changes edge treatment, so compare fine geometry and moving foliage rather than relying only on a still screenshot.

The menu names and availability can vary by platform and supported hardware. Patch 7.0 added AMD FSR, NVIDIA DLSS on supported graphics cards, 3D resolution scaling, dynamic-resolution thresholds, TSCMAA anti-aliasing, additional shadow choices, texture-resolution options, and GTAO quality options. If an option is missing, your edition, driver support, or hardware may not expose it. See the Patch 7.0 graphics changes.

5. Rerun after every meaningful change

Use the same benchmark resolution, preset, and cap after each adjustment. Record the score and the graph, not just the final rating. If lowering one option produces no useful change, restore it and test the next option; changing several at once hides which trade-off helped.

6. Verify the result in live play

The benchmark is a controlled comparison, not a reproduction of every player location, weather effect, raid mechanic, or crowded market board. Play for at least one representative session at your usual resolution and cap. Visit a busy hub, enter a duty with numerous effects, and test the activities where you normally see drops. If live play falls below the cap, lower the cap or repeat the adjustment sequence rather than assuming the benchmark score guarantees the target.

How to choose between the important graphics controls

Control When to try it What to watch for
3D resolution scaling Native rendering misses the target Sharper or softer image at the same output resolution; compare text and thin geometry
AMD FSR Your GPU supports it and you need more headroom Upscaling artifacts, shimmer, and motion clarity
NVIDIA DLSS A supported NVIDIA graphics card exposes it Fine-detail stability and clarity compared with native rendering
Dynamic resolution You prefer an automatic workload adjustment to occasional dips Visible resolution changes during heavy scenes; whether the selected cap is met more often
GTAO quality You need a further reduction after scaling or upscaling Loss of contact shading around characters, objects, and corners
Shadow quality Large outdoor scenes or groups still cause drops Shadow softness and detail versus frame-time consistency
Texture resolution You are balancing image quality and available graphics memory Surface detail, texture loading, and any new stutter
TSCMAA and other anti-aliasing choices Edges or foliage look distracting after scaling changes Shimmering, jagged edges, and motion clarity

There is no publisher-supplied “most expensive settings” list for every PC. Treat the table as an experiment order, then keep the combination that meets your own cap at the image quality you can accept.

Starting profiles for common goals

These are starting strategies, not tested presets. Begin with the benchmark’s imported settings or a default preset, then apply the relevant sequence and measure at the output resolution you intend to use.

Goal Starting strategy Cap decision Trade-off
1080p at 60 fps Run at 1920×1080, test native rendering first, then try an available upscaler or lower 3D resolution scaling. Reduce GTAO and shadows one at a time if needed. Use 60 fps only when the live-game test holds it; otherwise test 30 fps or a lower sustainable target. Scaling and shadow reductions can improve consistency but may soften detail or reduce depth cues.
1080p with maximum image quality Keep native scaling and higher image-quality options, then use the benchmark to find the highest cap the system can actually maintain. Prefer a stable 30 or 60 fps over an unstable higher limit. You may sacrifice refresh-rate smoothness for clarity.
High-refresh display Benchmark at the display’s native resolution and compare the refresh-rate option with a fixed 60-fps cap. Use dynamic resolution or supported upscaling only if the image remains acceptable. Select the display-refresh option only with measured headroom; otherwise cap at 60 or 30. High refresh requires substantially more sustained performance than a 30- or 60-fps target.
Hardware close to minimum Test 1280×720 or another lower output resolution available in the benchmark, reduce render scale or use supported upscaling, then reduce GTAO and shadows. Start at 30 fps and raise the target only after live testing. Lower resolution and scaling improve workload headroom at the cost of sharpness.

Understand the Dawntrail benchmark score

Square Enix’s score guide labels 4,000–5,999 as Standard Performance. The publisher describes that band as capable of running the game on default settings. Scores from 2,000–3,999 are labeled Slightly Low Performance – Changes to Settings Recommended; slowdown may occur, and changing settings may help.

Score band Square Enix label How to use it
4,000–5,999 Standard Performance A useful indication that default settings are viable for the benchmark; still verify your chosen resolution, cap, and live areas.
2,000–3,999 Slightly Low Performance – Changes to Settings Recommended Use the one-change-at-a-time workflow and retest. The band does not specify a guaranteed FPS.

Do not convert a score into a frame-rate promise. The benchmark rating is categorical, and the same computer can receive a different result when resolution, preset, scaling, or driver state changes. For meaningful comparisons, keep those variables identical.

Troubleshoot FPS drops without guessing

The benchmark is below your target

  • Confirm that the benchmark resolution matches the game resolution you intend to use.
  • Check whether the launcher imported an unexpectedly high preset or native scaling value.
  • Lower 3D resolution scaling or test a supported upscaler.
  • Reduce GTAO, then shadows, rerunning the complete sequence after each change.
  • If the score remains in the low band, choose a lower cap and validate it in live play rather than selecting a rate the PC cannot sustain.

The benchmark looks acceptable but crowded areas stutter

  • Repeat the test in a representative hub, alliance duty, or other location where you normally see the problem.
  • Compare a fixed 60- or 30-fps cap with the display-refresh or unlimited option.
  • Use dynamic resolution if brief heavy scenes matter more to you than a perfectly constant internal resolution.
  • Change one visual option at a time so you can identify which compromise improves the specific scene.

The image became too soft or unstable after upscaling

  • Compare the upscaler with native rendering at the same output resolution.
  • Raise 3D resolution scaling if the benchmark still has headroom, then retest.
  • Try a different available anti-aliasing choice and inspect moving foliage, hair, text, and thin geometry.
  • If the artifacts remain unacceptable, restore native rendering and lower GTAO or shadows instead.

Your target rate is never reached

Lowering a cap does not make an underpowered system sustain that rate. Return to the benchmark, reduce workload in the documented controls, and select the highest cap that remains stable during the live-game check. If that is 30 fps, a consistent 30 is a more useful result than an unstable 60 selected only because the menu offers it.

Common mistakes that make comparisons unreliable

  • Comparing different resolutions: A 720p score and a 1080p score do not measure the same workload.
  • Changing several options simultaneously: You lose the evidence needed to decide which visual compromise was worthwhile.
  • Treating a category as an FPS guarantee: The benchmark labels performance bands; it does not promise a steady rate in every encounter.
  • Testing only an empty scene: Crowded hubs, effects-heavy duties, and your normal play pattern may be more demanding.
  • Choosing unlimited automatically: Unlimited is not inherently smoother if frame delivery fluctuates; compare it with a cap your PC can hold.
  • Assuming the requirements table specifies performance: Minimum and recommended hardware describe a baseline and can change over time; they do not define a 30-, 60-, or 120-fps result.
  • Ignoring menu differences: FSR, DLSS, dynamic resolution, TSCMAA, and some shadow or texture choices may depend on platform and hardware support.

A practical decision rule

Use the benchmark at your real output resolution, import your current settings, and save the initial score. If the result misses your target, lower 3D resolution scaling or use a supported upscaler, then test GTAO and shadows individually. Rerun the full sequence after each meaningful change, choose a cap that the graph and live-game session both support, and keep the profile only if its image quality is acceptable. This method is more dependable than copying a single “best” preset because it accounts for your hardware, display, resolution, and the places you actually play.
