Best Fighting Games to Play If You Like Mortal Kombat

For most Mortal Kombat players, start with Street Fighter 6. It is the easiest bridge to traditional 2D fighting fundamentals while still offering several control schemes, a substantial solo package and online competition. Pick TEKKEN 8 instead if you want three-dimensional movement, launchers and a once-per-round power state. Killer Instinct is the closest match for players who care most about relentless combos, finishers and a darker tone.

The right alternative depends on which part of Mortal Kombat you enjoy: readable one-on-one spacing, cinematic violence, elaborate combo routes, character spectacle or a deep competitive system. The guide below maps those preferences to six current games without pretending that any of them is mechanically identical to Mortal Kombat.

Quick picks for Mortal Kombat fans

Game Best fit for Combat format What feels different from Mortal Kombat
Street Fighter 6 A first step into mainstream 2D fundamentals, with strong beginner support One-versus-one, traditional 2D The Drive gauge makes offense, defense and resource timing the central lesson
TEKKEN 8 Players who want 3D sidestepping, launchers and cinematic aggression One-versus-one, 3D arena Movement has a third dimension and Heat changes the pace once each round
Killer Instinct Fans of dark presentation, huge combos and end-of-round finishers One-versus-one, 2D Combo-breaker decisions are as important as starting a combo
Guilty Gear Strive Players who want anime visuals and a high technical ceiling One-versus-one, 2.5D Roman Cancels, Burst and Wall Break create a dense system layer
Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising A readable fantasy fighter with comparatively approachable pacing One-versus-one, 2D presentation Its match flow is less subsystem-heavy than the most technical choices here
The King of Fighters XV Players ready to learn team construction and character order Three-versus-three teams, 2D You manage a roster of three during every match instead of one fighter

What actually carries over from Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat is not one single design idea. A player may be attached to its 2D lane-based spacing, its dramatic character presentation, its special-move inputs, its story modes, its competitive mind games or its finishers. Those preferences point to different alternatives.

Combat plane

Street Fighter 6, Killer Instinct, Guilty Gear Strive, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising and The King of Fighters XV use a traditional 2D fighting plane. You still move left and right, jump, crouch and control horizontal space, although each game has its own approach to air movement and screen control. TEKKEN 8 adds sidestepping and lateral positioning in a 3D arena, so spacing is not simply a matter of standing at the right distance on one line.

#1 Best Overall
CD Bandai Games Tekken 8 for Playstation 5
  • Arcade Quest - In the new single-player mode ‘Arcade Quest’, players can create their own avatar and conquer their rivals in a variety of different arcades. This mode serves as an introduction to the gameplay of TEKKEN 8, allowing players to acquire basic knowledge, learn practical techniques, and enjoy a unique storyline and battles different from regular matches. .

System load

Every candidate adds a signature rule that changes how you spend opportunities. Street Fighter’s Drive gauge covers several offensive and defensive actions. Tekken’s Heat state gives each character a timed burst of power. Guilty Gear layers Roman Cancels, Burst and Wall Break. Killer Instinct asks you to understand both combo construction and combo breaking. Granblue keeps the route to a useful game plan comparatively readable, while KOF XV adds team order and resource decisions across three characters.

Tone and presentation

Killer Instinct is the nearest tonal match if you want a darker, violent edge. Guilty Gear is deliberately stylized, with a rock soundtrack and anime-inspired character designs. Street Fighter is broad-audience and grounded, Tekken frames its fights as cinematic martial-arts drama, and Granblue uses a bright fantasy-anime setting. None reproduces Mortal Kombat’s exact mixture of mythology, gore and Fatalities.

Street Fighter 6: the best all-round gateway

Choose Street Fighter 6 when you want to build transferable fighting-game fundamentals without giving up a large solo and online package. Its 2D format is familiar to a Mortal Kombat player, but the neutral game, anti-air timing and resource management encourage a different rhythm.

How the Drive system changes a match

PlayStation describes the Drive gauge as the center of play. Drive Impact challenges an opponent with an armored strike, Drive Parry is a timing-based defensive option, Drive Reversal helps you escape pressure, Drive Rush converts gauge into forward momentum, and Overdrive versions of special moves spend the same resource. Spending too much leaves a character in Burnout, a major disadvantage that limits defensive choices and makes the next exchange dangerous.

The result is a game in which a flashy attack is never just a move choice; it is also a question about the remaining gauge. That is a teachable step up from basic special-move execution, and it gives experienced players room to make strategic decisions without requiring a team roster.

Beginner support and accessibility

Capcom says the game offers controller input options tailored to beginners and seasoned players alike. You can therefore learn spacing and decision-making before committing to the most demanding traditional inputs. Capcom also highlights improved audio accessibility, which is useful if sound cues are part of how you read a match.

Platforms and the sales figure that is often misunderstood

Street Fighter 6 is listed for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. The Switch 2 version launched on June 5, 2025. Capcom reported 56 million cumulative sales for the Street Fighter series as of December 31, 2024; that is a franchise total, not a unit count for Street Fighter 6.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if you want the safest first game after Mortal Kombat and value a clear path from beginner controls to serious play.
  • Choose it if you want one-versus-one matches without learning a team order or a 3D movement system.
  • Look elsewhere if finishers and a horror-leaning presentation are your main reason for playing Mortal Kombat.

TEKKEN 8: the best 3D follow-up

TEKKEN 8 is the strongest recommendation when the part of Mortal Kombat you enjoy is explosive offense, character-specific launchers and cinematic presentation, but you are willing to learn a new movement language. The basic objective remains one-versus-one combat, yet sidesteps, backdashes and wall positioning make the arena itself a strategic tool.

Launchers, combos and Heat

PlayStation characterizes the game around movement, launchers and flashy combos. Every character also has a once-per-round Heat state. Heat boosts aggression and enables options such as Heat Smash and Heat Dash, so activating it is a major tempo decision rather than a minor meter spend. You must decide whether to use Heat to force an opening now or preserve other resources for a later exchange.

That structure can feel more immediately aggressive than Street Fighter, but it also makes mistakes more visible. A launcher can lead to a long combo, and poor lateral positioning can expose you to attacks that would have missed on a 2D plane. “Harder than Mortal Kombat” is not an objective label: a player comfortable with 3D movement may find Tekken natural, while a 2D specialist may need more adjustment.

Presentation, editions and platforms

Bandai Namco presents the game as a new-generation entry powered by Unreal Engine 5. The official listing covers PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with local and online multiplayer. The current page shows a base game and editions that include additional playable characters and stages, so check the exact edition and included content in your region before buying.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if you want the biggest mechanical change from Mortal Kombat while keeping one-on-one matches and spectacular combos.
  • Expect to spend deliberate practice time on sidestepping, punishment and wall positioning.
  • Do not choose it solely because you want an easier game; its learning demands are different rather than universally lower or higher.

Killer Instinct: the closest aggressive, finisher-focused alternative

Killer Instinct is the natural pick for Mortal Kombat fans who want a dark presentation, relentless offense and a dramatic end to each round. Xbox lists 29 characters, each with a distinct fighting style, combo tools and finishers. That combination gives it the closest overall feel to Mortal Kombat’s violent spectacle, even though its combat systems and finishing sequences are its own.

Why combo literacy matters

Killer Instinct’s defining conversation is not simply “can you start a combo?” It is “can you recognize its structure and break it at the right time?” You need to learn the difference between opening an opponent, extending a sequence and defending against one. Combo-breaker literacy turns defense into an active prediction game, which is a different emphasis from Mortal Kombat’s more move-list-driven approach.

Modes, performance and access

Xbox lists single-player modes, online multiplayer and cross-play between Xbox consoles and Windows 11 PC. On Xbox Series X consoles and compatible PCs, the listing specifies 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. The game supports Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud Gaming.

It is listed as free-to-start. Xbox says cloud play is included with Game Pass Premium and Ultimate, subject to the current catalog and subscription terms. That makes it a low-friction way to test whether its combo-breaker rhythm suits you before committing to a full purchase.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if finishers, a darker tone and long combo exchanges matter more than having the newest release.
  • Choose it if you enjoy learning an opponent’s offensive pattern and interrupting it.
  • Remember that its free-to-start model and cloud availability can vary by account, region and current service catalog.

Guilty Gear Strive: the technical anime fighter

Guilty Gear Strive is for players who want the visual drama of an animated series and a system-rich competitive game. Arc System Works describes it as an evolving 2.5D fighter with revamped visuals, cinematic camera work, a rock soundtrack and responsive gameplay. The franchise has continued for more than 25 years, and the official page reports over 3.5 million players worldwide on its current 2026 page.

Roman Cancels, Burst and Wall Break

PlayStation identifies Roman Cancels, Burst and Wall Break as core systems. Roman Cancels let you spend tension to alter the timing of an exchange, convert an unsafe situation or extend pressure. Burst is a defensive escape that must be managed rather than thrown out automatically. Wall Break turns sustained corner pressure into a transition that can reset the stage and change the next interaction.

Those systems create spectacular momentum swings, but they also increase the number of decisions you must recognize. The game is a good fit if studying character-specific interactions sounds appealing; it is less suitable if you want to learn one compact universal game plan.

Onboarding and continuing updates

The official page lists a tutorial, ranked matches and more than 32 fighters, along with 2026 balance and content updates. Because the roster and balance continue to evolve, check the current version and character availability on your regional storefront before starting a long-term training plan.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if visual style, music and cinematic transitions are as important as the underlying competition.
  • Choose it if you enjoy mastering resource conversions and character-specific pressure.
  • Expect more system terminology and matchup study than in a first-time-friendly Mortal Kombat session.

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising: the readable fantasy option

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising suits players who want stylized characters and online competition without immediately taking on every subsystem found in Tekken or Guilty Gear. PlayStation describes it as a beautifully rendered fighter with distinct character playstyles, comparatively approachable pacing and movement that feels familiar to other anime fighters.

Tekken 8 [PS5]
  • TEKKEN 8, the brand new part of the legendary TEKKEN range, brings the battle to a new generation!
  • TEKKEN 8 continues the tragic saga of the Mishima bloodline and their world-moving battles between father and son.
  • With a variety of single-player content, such as the all-new Arcade Quest mode and a comprehensive customization system for characters and avatars, TEKKEN 8 offers the most exciting experience yet.

Why its pacing helps new players

Rising gives each character a clear identity, so you can begin by learning a small set of attacks, defensive responses and matchup-specific situations. Its fantasy presentation is far removed from Mortal Kombat’s gore, but the one-on-one format and emphasis on recognizing an opponent’s turn make the transition understandable.

“Approachable” here is a reader-fit judgment, not a claim that the game is objectively easy. Online opponents can still expose gaps in anti-air timing, spacing and defensive discipline. Its value is that the first useful game plan is easier to see before you add more advanced optimization.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if you want anime presentation with a comparatively uncluttered route into matches.
  • Choose it if Mortal Kombat’s one-on-one structure appeals to you but its violence does not.
  • Choose another game if finishers or a dark tone are non-negotiable priorities.

The King of Fighters XV: the team-battle alternative

The King of Fighters XV changes the basic question from “which character do I main?” to “which three-character team can I manage?” PlayStation explains that matches use three-versus-three battles: you build a team of three, and the next fighter enters when the current fighter is defeated.

Why team order changes strategy

Character order is not cosmetic. The opening fighter, middle fighter and anchor each have different jobs, and your choices affect how much health, meter and information remain for the final confrontation. A character who is excellent at starting momentum may be placed first, while a character who converts resources efficiently may be saved for last.

This structure rewards roster experimentation and makes every round part of a larger match plan. It is a poor fit if you want Mortal Kombat’s single-character identity to remain untouched, but an excellent fit if you are ready for a broader strategic layer.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it if team construction and character order sound more interesting than a single fixed matchup.
  • Expect to learn several move sets, not just one, before you feel fully prepared.
  • Choose a one-on-one recommendation first if you are still learning basic spacing and defensive timing.

Which game should you play after Mortal Kombat 1?

Use this sequence to make the choice without guessing from screenshots or genre labels.

  1. Identify your non-negotiable. Pick presentation, finishers, 2D fundamentals, 3D movement, anime systems or team strategy.
  2. Choose the combat plane. Stay with traditional 2D movement through Street Fighter 6, Killer Instinct, Guilty Gear Strive or Granblue. Move to Tekken 8 only if you want lateral movement as part of the challenge.
  3. Set your system tolerance. Start with Granblue for a readable ruleset, Street Fighter for a teachable resource system, Killer Instinct for combo-breaker literacy, Guilty Gear for layered mechanics, or KOF XV for team management.
  4. Check your hardware. Street Fighter 6 reaches the widest set of listed platforms, Tekken 8 is limited to current-generation consoles and PC, and Killer Instinct has the specific Xbox, Windows 11 and cloud options described above.
  5. Test your preferred character archetype. A grappler, rushdown fighter or zoning specialist can feel radically different across games even when the labels are the same. Use tutorials or training mode before judging the entire roster.
  6. Commit to one learning goal. For your first sessions, practice one anti-air, one safe approach and one defensive escape rather than trying to memorize every combo.

Where the competitive scene fits

You will find an active competitive ecosystem around all six games, but event size does not prove that one title has better matchmaking or a larger current player base. The Evo 2024 primer on the PlayStation Blog expected more than 10,000 participants in Las Vegas and described the event as the biggest esports event on record at that time. Treat that as context for the breadth of fighting-game competition, not as a head-to-head population comparison.

Platform, edition and live-content checks

Fighting games change through balance patches, downloadable characters and platform-specific editions. Before purchasing, verify the current storefront listing for your country, the exact base-game or bundle contents, whether your preferred character is included, and whether online play requires a platform subscription. For Guilty Gear Strive and any other title with ongoing updates, confirm the current fighter count and patch version rather than relying on an older video or tier list.

There is no single “Mortal Kombat replacement.” Street Fighter 6 is the strongest general recommendation; Tekken 8 is the boldest mechanical change; Killer Instinct is the closest match for aggressive, finisher-oriented spectacle; Guilty Gear Strive is the technical anime choice; Granblue is the readable fantasy option; and KOF XV is for players ready to make the roster itself part of every match.
