Best Fighting Games to Play If You Like Fire Emblem Characters in Smash

For the closest match to Smash’s movement, start with Rivals of Aether II. Choose Brawlhalla if you need a free, cross-platform platform fighter. If you want to move from platform combat into traditional anime fighters, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is the gentlest bridge, while Guilty Gear -Strive- is the deeper technical step.

No game reproduces Super Smash Bros.’ crossover roster, platform movement and ring-out rules exactly. The right alternative depends on what you enjoy about Marth, Lucina, Roy, Chrom, Ike, Robin, Corrin or Byleth: sword-focused spacing, recovery and stage movement, colorful fantasy characters, or the challenge of learning a conventional fighting game.

What Fire Emblem fans are usually looking for

Nintendo’s current Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighter index lists eight Fire Emblem characters: Marth, Lucina, Roy, Chrom, Ike, Robin, Corrin and Byleth. Their source games span Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, The Binding Blade, Radiant Dawn, Awakening, Fates and Three Houses.

That group covers several different reasons to enjoy a fighter. You may like the clear reach and timing of a sword, the ability to recover to a platform, the visual language of heroic fantasy, or the way each character has a distinct weapon and special-move identity. Those preferences point to different games.

  • Want Smash-like movement and ring-outs? Look first at Rivals of Aether II or Brawlhalla.

  • Want fantasy characters but traditional health bars and rounds? Try Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising.
  • Want dramatic weapon users and a more demanding anime-fighter system? Choose Guilty Gear -Strive-.

The comparison below separates those priorities instead of treating every “Smash alternative” as the same kind of game.

At-a-glance comparison

Game Combat format Entry and availability Multiplayer features Why it suits Fire Emblem fans Best for
Rivals of Aether II Platform fighter with recovery, stages and ring-out goals Paid purchase; Steam lists an October 23, 2024 release. Console availability is not established here. Online PvP and shared/split-screen PvP are listed on Steam. Closest overall match for side-view movement and stage-based combat, with elemental fighters rather than Fire Emblem characters. Smash players who want the same broad loop in a different roster.
Brawlhalla Free-to-play platform fighter Free to start. Officially listed on Steam, Ubisoft Connect, Epic Games Store, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Android and iOS. Cross-platform play is advertised across the listed systems. Weapon-based Legends provide readable silhouettes and distinct fighting styles, although the cast is not built around Fire Emblem-style lords. Groups that need a no-cost, cross-platform option.
Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising Traditional 2D fighter with health bars and round-based wins A Free Edition is available; pricing and platform details for other editions are not stated here. Crossplay, online lobbies, private rooms, frame information and combo practice are documented. Private rooms are unavailable in the Free Edition. Colorful fantasy presentation and simple inputs make it an approachable first conventional fighter. Smash players ready to learn rounds, blocking and matchups without starting at the most complex end.
Guilty Gear -Strive- Traditional 2.5D anime fighter Paid purchase. Nintendo’s store lists a Nintendo Switch Edition. Solo content, character stories and battles with players worldwide are highlighted. Expressive weapon users, strong silhouettes and cinematic special moves appeal to fans of dramatic Fire Emblem fighters. Players who want the biggest technical and presentation step up from Smash.

Rivals of Aether II: the closest platform-fighter replacement

Why it matches the Smash habit

Rivals of Aether II is the clearest recommendation when the part you miss is not a particular character but the platform-fighter loop itself. Steam describes it as a platform fighter, and its listed multiplayer options include online player-versus-player matches plus shared or split-screen play. That combination preserves the basic rhythm of moving through a side-view stage, contesting space, recovering after being launched and trying to force an opponent out of the arena.

The game uses elemental fighters rather than a crossover roster of Nintendo characters. That means its appeal is mechanical first: you are choosing a fighter whose movement and elemental tools define neutral exchanges, edge situations and recoveries. A Marth or Lucina player should expect the same broad questions—how far your attack reaches, when to challenge an approach and how to return safely—but not the same animations, hitboxes or move names.

What the platform and multiplayer information tells you

The Steam listing gives a firm PC reference point and dates the release to October 23, 2024. It confirms online PvP and shared/split-screen PvP. It does not establish console availability or a free version, so do not assume that a Switch or console edition exists simply because other platform fighters have one.

For a household or small group using one computer, shared and split-screen support is the important distinction from online-only games. For a remote group, online PvP is the relevant feature. The listing does not establish the size of the roster, a specific matchmaking population or performance on every computer, so those should not be treated as guaranteed advantages.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it when platform movement matters more than a licensed or story-driven cast.
  • Choose it when you want both online matches and same-device multiplayer.
  • Choose it when you are comfortable buying a game rather than starting with a free download.
  • Look elsewhere if your priority is playing on a specific console, because console availability is not established by the cited listing.

Brawlhalla: the easiest free and cross-platform entry

Why it is the practical group recommendation

The official page labels Brawlhalla “The Free-to-Play Platform Fighter” and says, “Play cross-platform with anyone, anywhere.” It lists Steam, Ubisoft Connect, Epic Games Store, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Android and iOS. For a group divided across PC, consoles and mobile devices, that breadth removes the usual platform barrier before anyone has learned a move.

It also removes the upfront purchase decision. You can begin with the free-to-play version, invite friends and determine whether platform-fighter movement suits your group before spending anything. The page does not establish a particular paid edition, roster count or performance target, so the recommendation is about access and format rather than a claim that it reproduces Smash’s balance or character design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How its roster differs from Fire Emblem

Brawlhalla uses weapon-based Legends. That gives each fighter an immediately readable combat identity, but the presentation is not built around royal heirs, military commanders or a single fantasy series. A player who likes the visual clarity of a sword fighter can find a familiar kind of weapon focus; a player seeking Marth’s exact spacing or Byleth’s specific weapon set will not find a one-to-one substitute.

The crossover feel is also different. Instead of Smash’s Nintendo-centered lineup, the game’s identity comes from its own Legends and its broader crossover presentation. Treat it as a platform-fighter ruleset with accessible entry, not as a Fire Emblem roster replacement.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it for a mixed-device friend group.
  • Choose it when free entry is more important than a paid, curated roster.
  • Choose it when you want platform combat on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, PC storefronts or mobile.
  • Choose another game if your main goal is a conventional health-bar fighter or a specifically Fire Emblem-like cast.

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising: the gentlest move to traditional fighters

What changes from Smash

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is a conventional 2D fighter, not a platform fighter. Matches are decided through health-bar damage and round wins rather than launching an opponent past a blast zone. There are no Smash-style platforms to use for recovery, and success depends more on blocking, spacing within a grounded lane, confirming attacks into combos and learning how your opponent’s character wins exchanges.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

That change can feel substantial, but the game is designed to reduce the first barrier. Cygames says newcomers can use simple inputs without learning difficult commands while advanced players can still compete. For a Smash player, this means you can concentrate on fundamentals—when to attack, defend, retreat and punish—before committing to the more elaborate input sequences associated with some traditional fighters.

Modes and practice tools

The documented feature set includes Story, Arcade, Training, Grand Bruise Legends and an online lobby. Its features page also lists crossplay, private online rooms, frame information, combo practice and character breakdowns. Those tools matter because traditional fighters expose details that Smash players may not routinely study, such as frame advantage, punish windows and matchup-specific responses.

There is one important edition limitation: private rooms are unavailable in the Free Edition. You can use the free version to learn the system and explore its available modes, but a group that specifically wants invitation-based private matches should verify which edition provides that function before planning a regular room.

Why fantasy fans may stay

The colorful fantasy setting makes the transition less stark than moving directly to a realistic martial-arts game. Characters retain strong visual identities and weapon-driven archetypes, which can appeal to someone who picked Ike, Roy or Byleth for more than their tournament value. The game still asks you to learn a round-based fighter, so the fantasy presentation is a bridge, not a replacement for Smash’s stage movement.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it when you want to learn a health-bar fighter with unusually approachable controls.
  • Choose it when crossplay and training information are important.
  • Use the Free Edition as a low-friction trial, but do not assume it includes private rooms.
  • Choose a platform fighter instead if recovering to stages and ring-outs are the features you cannot give up.

Guilty Gear -Strive-: the deeper anime-fighter step

Why it appeals to weapon-focused players

Arc System Works describes Guilty Gear -Strive- as a 2.5D fighter. Its presentation emphasizes dramatic character stories, solo play and battles with players worldwide. For a Fire Emblem fan, the attraction is the same broad design language that makes a sword-wielding Smash character memorable: bold silhouettes, distinctive weapons, expressive special moves and a cast in which matchup knowledge matters.

The combat structure is a full departure from Smash. There are no platform recoveries or ring-outs. You play through traditional rounds, manage a health bar and learn how your chosen character interacts with every opponent. Command inputs, timing and matchup knowledge become part of the long-term learning curve. The game’s spectacle is a reason to make that investment, not evidence that the controls work like Smash.

Platform and content notes

Nintendo’s store currently lists a Nintendo Switch Edition, giving Switch owners a direct way to enter the series. Arc System Works’ description also highlights solo content and character stories, so the game offers structured reasons to play even when you are not ready for ranked or worldwide matches.

The available information does not establish a universal price, edition-by-edition feature list or identical content across every platform. Check the store page for your region and edition before buying, especially if you need a particular multiplayer feature.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it when you want the most demanding traditional-fighter progression in this list.
  • Choose it for weapon users, dramatic presentation and a large amount of matchup learning.
  • Choose it if you are willing to practice command inputs instead of relying on Smash-style directional specials.
  • Choose Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising first if you want a softer introduction to conventional fighting-game controls.

How to pick in under a minute

  1. Start with the win condition. If you want to launch opponents off a stage, select Rivals of Aether II or Brawlhalla. If health bars and rounds sound appealing, select Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising or Guilty Gear -Strive-.
  2. Check your budget. For a no-cost first session, use Brawlhalla. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising also has a Free Edition, with private-room restrictions. Rivals of Aether II and Guilty Gear -Strive- are purchase-led options.
  3. Check where your friends play. Brawlhalla explicitly lists cross-platform play across PC storefronts, consoles and mobile. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising documents crossplay. The cited information confirms online and local modes for Rivals of Aether II, but not its console availability.
  4. Decide how much traditional-fighter study you want. Pick Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising for simple inputs and extensive practice information. Pick Guilty Gear -Strive- for the steeper command-input and matchup-learning challenge.

A practical transition plan for Smash players

If you choose a platform fighter

  1. Play several matches without chasing advanced techniques. Identify how your fighter moves, attacks and returns to the stage.
  2. Spend a short practice session learning one reliable approach, one defensive response and one recovery route.
  3. In local matches, rotate stages or maps so you learn how movement changes around platforms and edges.
  4. In online matches, focus on recognizing the opponent’s recovery and approach patterns rather than copying a tier list.

This approach transfers the decision-making you already use in Smash while leaving room to learn each game’s own physics and roster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you choose a traditional fighter

  1. Begin in Training mode and learn the normal attacks, blocking behavior and one dependable combo.
  2. Use frame information or character breakdowns where available to understand which attacks are safe and which can be punished.
  3. Play short sets instead of isolated matches so you can identify a repeated opponent habit.
  4. Add more difficult inputs only after your basic attack, defense and punish routine is reliable.

The key adjustment is accepting that a successful exchange usually earns position or damage, not an immediate launch. Patience and matchup recognition replace the constant search for a recovery angle.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Expecting a one-to-one Fire Emblem replacement

None of these recommendations supplies Marth, Lucina, Roy, Chrom, Ike, Robin, Corrin or Byleth as a direct substitute. Choose by the feature you value—platform movement, weapon identity, fantasy presentation or traditional-fighter depth—rather than by searching for an equivalent lord.

Assuming every game uses Smash controls

The two platform fighters preserve the broad movement idea, but their fighters, stages and systems are different. The two traditional fighters replace ring-outs with health bars and rounds. Give yourself time to learn each game’s neutral game before judging it against Smash muscle memory.

Buying the wrong edition for your group

Free access does not guarantee every multiplayer feature. In particular, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising documents that private rooms are unavailable in its Free Edition. Verify the edition and regional store listing before organizing a recurring online group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming platform support from genre reputation

Brawlhalla has an explicit multi-platform list. The Steam listing confirms Rivals of Aether II on PC with online and shared/split-screen play, but the cited information does not establish console releases. Check the store for your system instead of inferring availability from another game in the list.

Final recommendation

Pick Rivals of Aether II when Smash’s movement is the non-negotiable feature. Pick Brawlhalla when free entry and cross-platform sessions matter most. Pick Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising when you want an approachable fantasy-themed route into health-bar fighting. Pick Guilty Gear -Strive- when you are ready for the most technical, presentation-heavy traditional fighter of the four.
