If Mortal Kombat 1’s Fatalities, Fatal Blows and cinematic violence are the reason you play fighting games, Invincible VS is the closest thematic alternative. For different priorities, TEKKEN 8 supplies 3D impact, Street Fighter 6 offers the smoothest beginner path, and Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is the easiest way to try a modern fighter with simple inputs. The games below are ranked by how well they deliver spectacle, satisfying match endings, accessible controls, solo content and online play—not by gore alone.
Quick picks
| Game | Best reason to choose it | Main compromise for a Mortal Kombat fan |
|---|---|---|
| Invincible VS | Graphic superhero violence, team battles and vicious Super moves | Launch timing, platforms and physical-edition availability can vary, so check the current listing for your region |
| TEKKEN 8 | High-fidelity 3D arenas, aggressive pressure and dramatic character presentation | Its identity is competitive 3D combat rather than gore-centered Fatalities |
| Street Fighter 6 | Clear 2D fundamentals with Classic, Modern and Dynamic controls | Finishers are not built around realistic dismemberment |
| Guilty Gear -Strive- | Stylized animation, deep systems, rollback netcode and a voiced story | Violence is expressive and cartoon-like instead of Mortal Kombat-style gore |
| Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising | Simple inputs, a free-to-play version, cross-play and broad side modes | Its fantasy-adventure tone is much less macabre |
| Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves | Risk-and-reward neutral play built around REV, feints and costly combos | You get tension and flash rather than explicit finishing-move brutality |
What Mortal Kombat 1 sets as the benchmark
Mortal Kombat 1 is the reference point because it combines several kinds of payoff in one package. Its rebooted timeline provides a cinematic story, while offline and online modes support both solo players and competitive matches. During a round, a Kameo Fighter can assist with a separate move set, defensive Breakers can interrupt an opponent’s sequence, and a low-health Fatal Blow creates a dramatic comeback threat. At the end, Fatalities turn a win into an extended, deliberately gruesome spectacle.

That mix matters when choosing an alternative. A game may have spectacular supers but no finishing sequence; another may be easier to learn but offer little solo content; a third may have excellent netcode while using stylized rather than realistic violence. The recommendations below make those trade-offs explicit so you can decide whether your priority is gore, presentation, mechanics or convenience.
1. Invincible VS: the closest match for graphic finishing spectacle
Why it fits
Invincible VS is described as a brutal superhero 3v3 tag fighting game in which teams battle to the death. Blood, destruction, vicious Super moves and Ultimates put it nearest to Mortal Kombat’s appetite for visible, cinematic damage. The licensed superhero setting changes the flavor, but the emotional payoff is similar: a match is not simply scored and reset; the characters’ powers are used to create a destructive finale.
#1 Best Overall
- Arcade Quest - In the new single-player mode ‘Arcade Quest’, players can create their own avatar and conquer their rivals in a variety of different arcades. This mode serves as an introduction to the gameplay of TEKKEN 8, allowing players to acquire basic knowledge, learn practical techniques, and enjoy a unique storyline and battles different from regular matches. .
Modes and match structure
The listed package includes a cinematic story, Arcade and Training modes, plus competitive and casual multiplayer. The 3v3 format also changes how you think about match endings. Instead of one fighter carrying every exchange, you manage a team, choose when to tag and look for a Super or Ultimate that can close a round decisively. That makes it a better recommendation for players who enjoy assist-heavy team strategy than for someone seeking a one-on-one tournament simulation.
Important availability check
Platform, launch and physical-edition information can change by territory and release window. Confirm the current platform list, edition contents and online requirements in the storefront for your system before buying. Those details are especially important here because the game’s appeal depends on finding an active multiplayer community as well as accessing its story and Arcade content.
2. TEKKEN 8: the best 3D replacement for impact and pressure
A different camera, a similar sense of force
TEKKEN 8 is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. It uses fully 3D movement, so sidestepping, wall positioning and arena geometry replace Mortal Kombat’s primarily side-on spacing. Rebuilt character models, high-fidelity effects and reactive arenas make every launcher, wall interaction and heavy strike feel staged for a large screen.

Its Special Style can map useful attacks and combos to easier inputs while you learn movement and defense. The Heat System then gives matches an aggressive rhythm: activating Heat creates a window in which offensive pressure and character-specific options become central. You can start with assisted inputs, then disable them as you understand a character’s regular command list.
Where it differs from Mortal Kombat
TEKKEN 8 does not make Fatality-style gore the defining reward for winning. Its spectacle comes from camera work, impact effects, character rivalries and the momentum of a successful pressure sequence. Choose it when 3D footsies, wall combos and a large roster matter more than a dedicated dismemberment scene.
Rank #2
- TEKKEN 8, the brand new part of the legendary TEKKEN range, brings the battle to a new generation!
- TEKKEN 8 continues the tragic saga of the Mishima bloodline and their world-moving battles between father and son.
- With a variety of single-player content, such as the all-new Arcade Quest mode and a comprehensive customization system for characters and avatars, TEKKEN 8 offers the most exciting experience yet.
Local offline multiplayer and online multiplayer are supported. The game is therefore a strong choice for players who want a polished competitive routine, but the learning curve of three-dimensional movement is still steeper than a conventional 2D fighter’s.
3. Street Fighter 6: the clearest route to strong 2D fundamentals
Three control schemes
Street Fighter 6 is the recommendation when you want a modern 2D fighter that teaches the genre instead of overwhelming you on day one. Classic controls preserve the traditional six-button layout. Modern controls reduce the number of motion inputs and make selected attacks easier to access. Dynamic controls are designed for very low-friction play, allowing the game to choose context-appropriate actions. You can use those schemes as learning stages rather than permanent commitments.
Drive System and modes
The Drive System gives every character a shared resource framework for offense, defense and reversals. Understanding when to spend or preserve Drive is a more useful first lesson than memorizing a long list of special moves. World Tour adds a solo, role-playing-style progression; Battle Hub provides a social space for matches and activities; Fighting Ground contains the traditional training and versus tools.
The finishing-move trade-off
Street Fighter 6 is not a substitute for Fatalities. Its round-ending moments are dramatic because of resource management, a perfectly timed counter or a long combo, not because the winner performs realistic anatomical damage. Pick it if you want a large-feeling 2D community and a gentler onboarding path, and accept that the visual tone is competitive action rather than horror.
4. Guilty Gear -Strive-: stylized violence with serious depth
Presentation
Guilty Gear -Strive- combines 2D fighting rules with 3D cel-shaded character models and camera work that can make a single hit look like an animated film shot. Explosions, wall breaks and character-specific supers deliver spectacle, but the violence is deliberately stylized. It communicates power through color, sound and exaggerated motion instead of Mortal Kombat’s realistic gore.

- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Systems that scale with your skill
The design lets new players learn core fighting-game ideas while retaining advanced routes for specialists. You can begin by learning a character’s neutral buttons, anti-air and basic knockdown sequence, then add Roman Cancels, wall-break decisions and matchup-specific pressure. That layered structure is useful if you want a game that remains interesting after the novelty of finishing animations fades.

Story and online play
A fully voiced story mode provides a substantial noncompetitive experience. The game also explicitly supports rollback netcode, a networking approach intended to keep online inputs responsive when connections fluctuate. Check platform and regional matchmaking conditions before committing to a long-term online routine, but the underlying feature set makes this one of the strongest choices for remote play.
5. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising: the easiest first step
Simple inputs without removing the strategy
Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising offers selectable simple inputs, so special moves can be performed without requiring every traditional motion immediately. That lowers the barrier to entry while leaving the important decisions—spacing, anti-airs, cooldown timing and when to spend resources—intact. It is a practical choice if Mortal Kombat is your first serious fighting game and you want to understand fundamentals before tackling more demanding execution.
More than a versus screen
An RPG-inspired story mode gives solo players a progression path. An island lobby functions as a social space, and Grand Bruise Legends adds a party-oriented mode that breaks up standard matches. The game also has a free-to-play version, rollback netcode and cross-play, according to the documented feature set. That combination lets you test the core feel and online format before deciding whether the full roster and additional content are worth purchasing.
Why gore fans may still hesitate
The world is fantasy adventure, not horror. Supers can be flashy and decisive, but they are not designed as extended mutilation scenes. Choose Granblue when accessibility, experimentation and mode variety outrank visceral finishing animations.

6. Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves: for tense risk-and-reward matches
Two ways to control a fighter
Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves includes Arcade Style and Smart Style controls. Arcade Style is aimed at players who want conventional command execution; Smart Style can reduce input friction while you learn a character’s game plan. The distinction lets you focus on decision-making first and execution second, then move toward the fuller control scheme as your confidence grows.
REV, brakes and feints
The REV meter is the centerpiece of its risk-and-reward design. Brake and feint mechanics let you alter the timing or appearance of an attack, while defensive choices can prevent an opponent from turning one opening into a round-ending sequence. High-damage combos are costly, so spending resources carelessly can leave you unable to defend later.
Who should choose it
This is for players who enjoy reading neutral, creating hesitation and accepting meaningful resource risk. Its presentation is flashy, but its satisfaction comes from making the right gamble rather than watching an especially graphic finisher. It is a better alternative to Mortal Kombat for strategic tension than for blood effects.

If brutality is non-negotiable
Start with Invincible VS. Its battles to the death, blood, destruction, Super moves and Ultimates most directly answer the request for violent finishing spectacle. Mortal Kombat 1 remains the benchmark for explicit gore because its Fatalities are a central, recurring part of the identity. The other five games use impact, animation or fantasy effects instead of trying to reproduce that exact tone.
If you want 3D movement
Choose TEKKEN 8. It is the only recommendation here built around full three-dimensional movement and reactive arenas. Expect to learn sidesteps, wall positioning and a larger spatial vocabulary than in the primarily 2D or 2.5D designs of Street Fighter 6, Guilty Gear -Strive-, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising and Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves.
Best Value
- Classic Experience Built for a Modern Era: With all core gameplay modes present, plus two brand new modes and enhanced visuals, Street Fighter 6 redefines the classic fighting game genre.
- Distinct Fighting Styles to Master: 18 diverse characters including legendary World Warriors and exciting brand new characters add their own flair to the game at launch, with more to be added post-launch.
- Brand New Game Modes: The Street Fighter franchise continues to hone its skills and redefine the fighting genre with the introduction of three new foundational modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
- In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
- Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. Dynamic Controls only require a press of the Auto-Attack button to perform attacks and is a great control type to use when you have friends and family over for a quick, casual game.
If you need the gentlest learning curve
Street Fighter 6 offers the broadest control ladder through Classic, Modern and Dynamic. Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising is another strong first stop because of selectable simple inputs and its free-to-play version. TEKKEN 8’s Special Style is useful when you want to sample a character before learning the complete command list. These aids reduce execution demands; they do not remove the need to learn defense, spacing and matchup decisions.
If solo content matters as much as versus play
Look for a game with more than Arcade mode. Mortal Kombat 1 has a cinematic story and both offline and online play. Invincible VS lists a cinematic story alongside Arcade and Training. Street Fighter 6’s World Tour is a dedicated solo progression mode, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising combines an RPG-inspired story with its island lobby and party mode, and Guilty Gear -Strive- includes a fully voiced story. Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is the more focused pick if your ideal evening is practicing fundamentals and playing matches rather than progressing through a large side campaign.
If online play is the deciding factor
Guilty Gear -Strive- and Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising explicitly advertise rollback netcode in the documented feature set; Granblue also lists cross-play. TEKKEN 8, Street Fighter 6, Mortal Kombat 1 and Invincible VS all list online modes, but your actual experience depends on platform, region, connection quality and the current matchmaking population. Check those conditions for your system rather than assuming that a feature listed for one edition applies identically everywhere.

- Decide whether you need actual gore. If blood, destruction and a dedicated finishing payoff are the first filter, try Invincible VS; if stylized spectacle is enough, continue to the next question.
- Pick your camera. Select TEKKEN 8 for 3D movement. Select Street Fighter 6, Guilty Gear -Strive-, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising or Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves for primarily 2D or 2.5D combat.
- Choose your input support. Start with Street Fighter 6 Modern or Dynamic, Granblue’s simple inputs, TEKKEN 8 Special Style or Fatal Fury’s Smart Style if traditional command execution is intimidating.
- Match the solo package to your free time. World Tour and Granblue’s RPG-inspired story suit long progression sessions; Mortal Kombat 1, Invincible VS and Guilty Gear -Strive- provide cinematic or voiced narrative options; Fatal Fury is the most focused on match practice.
- Confirm the online details for your platform. Verify cross-play, rollback implementation, regional matchmaking, required subscriptions and edition-specific content before buying. These are practical conditions, not just marketing checkboxes.
Common mistakes when replacing Mortal Kombat
Expecting every super move to be a Fatality
In most fighting games, a Super or Ultimate ends an exchange but does not begin a separate execution scene. If you buy Street Fighter 6, Guilty Gear -Strive-, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves or TEKKEN 8 expecting Mortal Kombat’s exact finishing structure, the game will feel less brutal even when its effects are spectacular.
Choosing by gore and ignoring the combat perspective
A player who dislikes 3D movement may bounce off TEKKEN 8 despite its impressive presentation. Conversely, someone who wants sidesteps, walls and arena positioning may find a 2D game too constrained. Decide whether the camera and movement model feel natural before judging the finisher package.
Using assisted controls without learning defense
Modern, Dynamic, Simple, Special and Smart control options help you perform attacks; they do not teach when to block, anti-air, challenge pressure or manage a shared resource. Spend your first practice sessions on one defensive response, one reliable punish and one way to escape the corner. That foundation makes every spectacular move easier to earn.
Assuming online features guarantee a good connection
Rollback netcode and cross-play are valuable, but latency, distance, platform settings and the available player pool still affect matches. Test a game during the hours you expect to play, and review the online requirements for your region and edition.
Verdict
Choose Invincible VS if Mortal Kombat’s brutal, cinematic finishing moments are the deciding factor. Choose TEKKEN 8 for 3D spectacle and pressure, Street Fighter 6 for the strongest fundamentals-first onboarding, Guilty Gear -Strive- for stylized depth and rollback play, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising for simple inputs and broad modes, and Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves for high-stakes neutral decisions. No alternative reproduces every part of Mortal Kombat 1, so the best choice depends on which part of its appeal you want to keep.
