What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The wait for MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is over. The 4v4 tag-team fighter launched on PlayStation 5 and PC on August 6, 2026 (August 7 in Japan by local time), with PC editions available through Steam and Epic. If you found this article through the older “while you wait” search, use it as a guide to games that complement Tōkon rather than placeholders for an unreleased game.
The best alternative depends on what attracted you to Tōkon. Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics is the closest choice for Marvel crossover history and classic team-fighter design. Dragon Ball FighterZ is the strongest substitute for anime spectacle and Arc System Works-developed team combat. Guilty Gear -Strive- is the pick for Arc’s visual language and deeper fighting-game fundamentals, although its match format is not Tōkon’s 4v4 system. None is an objective “best”: each answers a different reason to be interested in Tōkon.

First, the “wait” is over
MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a released game, not an announced project. The official support FAQ lists August 6, 2026 as the launch date on PlayStation 5 and PC, with the Japanese local date falling on August 7. The PC release is listed for Steam and Epic. That status matters because you no longer need a substitute while waiting for access; you can choose an older game to learn the genre, revisit Marvel’s fighting-game history, or develop skills that transfer to a new tag fighter.

It launched with 20 characters, adjustable controls, quick inputs, easy chain combos, local versus play, online lobbies and an Episode Mode. Those details make it more specific than a generic Marvel fighting game: the target experience combines a large rotating team, assist calls and an anime-influenced presentation.

The recommendations below therefore use five practical tests: team and tag mechanics, Marvel or crossover appeal, anime presentation, approachability of the controls, and the amount of solo, local and online content. The games are not ranked by sales, review averages or player counts; no independent study establishes a universal “best” fighting game.
What Tōkon actually offers
A four-character team rather than a single-fighter duel
Every Tōkon match is built around a four-person team. Assist calls can create openings and briefly bring a teammate into the action, allowing you to change the pace without abandoning the character you are controlling. Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazuto Sekine explained in a PlayStation interview published August 11, 2025 that the team wanted to challenge itself by creating a new tag fighter.
That design also lowers the entry barrier. Sekine said a player can learn one character and still enjoy seeing teammates enter and leave the battlefield. In practical terms, a new player does not have to master four complete move lists before experimenting with team tactics. You can begin with one preferred hero, then add assists and substitutions as you understand the neutral game.
Marvel characters filtered through Arc System Works’ style
Marvel Games Senior Product Development Manager Michael Francisco described the visual goal as a fusion of Marvel and American comics with Japanese anime and manga. The result is not an attempt to reproduce a film frame by frame. It is a stylized interpretation of Marvel characters with exaggerated effects, expressive animation and a manga-influenced presentation.
Accessible inputs with room to improve
The store listing specifically calls out adjustable controls, quick inputs and easy chain combos. These options are intended to let a newcomer perform useful actions early, while the tag system, assist timing and matchup knowledge provide a longer learning path. “Easy” does not mean every decision is automatic: choosing when to call a teammate, when to switch and how to protect an assist still rewards practice.

Offline and online modes
The official FAQ separates content that can be played offline from services that require an internet connection and a platform account.
| Mode or feature | Availability described by the official FAQ | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Episode Mode | Offline | No PlayStation Plus on PS5; no PlayStation account required on PC |
| Local Versus | Offline | No PlayStation Plus on PS5; no PlayStation account required on PC |
| Training Mode | Offline | No PlayStation Plus on PS5; no PlayStation account required on PC |
| All-Star Arena | Offline | No PlayStation Plus on PS5; no PlayStation account required on PC |
| Battle Guides and Character Guides | Offline | No PlayStation Plus on PS5; no PlayStation account required on PC |
| Online lobbies and other online play | Internet-connected | PS5 requires a PlayStation account and PlayStation Plus; PC requires internet and a PlayStation account |
This split is useful when choosing an alternative. If you mainly want a story, training or couch-versus game, you do not need to pay for online console access to use Tōkon’s offline modes. If your priority is ranked or lobby competition, check the account and subscription requirements for your platform before buying.

Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics
Why it is the closest Marvel-history choice
Choose this collection if the words “Marvel fighting game” matter more to you than matching Tōkon’s exact controls. It gathers arcade-era Marvel crossover fighters and preserves the team-based tradition that made those games influential. You get a historical view of how Marvel characters were adapted into competitive fighting games, rather than a modern tutorial for Tōkon’s 4v4 rules.
The collection is especially useful for players who want to understand the lineage behind the search phrase “fighting games like Marvel vs. Capcom.” Team selection, assists and rapid character changes are central to that tradition, but each included game has its own pace and system rules. Treat it as a set of related historical designs, not one uniform game with Tōkon’s control scheme.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Who should pick it
- Marvel-first players: You want recognizable crossover characters and the feel of an arcade anthology.
- History-minded players: You want to see how earlier Marvel team fighters handled assists, spacing and momentum.
- Local-play households: You prefer a collection built around direct matches rather than committing immediately to online competition.
What it will not teach you directly
Tōkon’s four-character structure, adjustable controls, quick inputs and easy chain-combo approach are its own design choices. Skills such as reading an opponent, managing screen space and confirming an opening transfer well, but button layouts, timing and team construction will not be identical. Use the collection to learn the genre’s vocabulary and Marvel’s fighting-game identity, then expect a separate adjustment period in Tōkon.
Dragon Ball FighterZ
Why it fits the anime team-fighter brief
Dragon Ball FighterZ is the most natural recommendation when your main interest is a fast, highly animated team fighter from Arc System Works. Like Tōkon, it turns a famous entertainment property into a competitive game with dramatic attacks, character assists and team decisions. Its anime presentation makes it an appealing bridge for players who enjoy Tōkon’s manga-influenced look but do not require Marvel characters.
The comparison ends at the broad design idea. Dragon Ball FighterZ has its own roster, resource systems, combo routes and matchup logic. A successful team in one game will not automatically be a successful team in the other. Learn the game’s specific assists and neutral interactions instead of assuming that a Tōkon team can be recreated with different characters.
Who should pick it
- Anime fans: You want cinematic attacks and a roster drawn from a single anime universe.
- Team-fighter learners: You want to practice assist timing, character rotation and coordinated offense before or alongside Tōkon.
- Arc System Works fans: You want another example of the developer’s approach to accessible presentation and high-level competition.
How to approach it as Tōkon preparation
Start with one lead character and two partners whose assists solve different problems, such as extending a combo or covering an approach. Practice calling an assist safely rather than treating it as a free attack. Then learn a simple punish and a reliable defensive escape. These habits—protecting a teammate, recognizing when a call is vulnerable and choosing a manageable team—are transferable concepts, even though the exact commands and frame data are not.
Guilty Gear -Strive-
Why it is the Arc-style recommendation
Guilty Gear -Strive- is the best choice if Tōkon’s visual identity interests you but you are also looking for a broader, more technically demanding fighting-game experience. It carries Arc System Works’ anime-influenced character design, music and effects while presenting a different battle structure. That makes it a companion rather than a substitute: you can study the studio’s approach to readability and spectacle without expecting a four-person tag match.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Its different format changes the skills you emphasize. With no Tōkon-style four-character rotation to manage, your attention shifts toward a fighter’s individual neutral tools, defensive decisions and matchup-specific knowledge. That concentrated format can be useful when you want to improve fundamentals without simultaneously tracking several assists.
Who should pick it
- Presentation-focused players: You want striking anime visuals and strong character identity.
- Fundamentals learners: You prefer to focus on one fighter’s buttons, movement and defensive options.
- Long-term competitors: You want a game whose different format lets you study fighting-game concepts in depth before returning to team play.
What carries over to Tōkon
Spacing, anti-air awareness, recognizing unsafe attacks and staying calm while defending are useful in almost any fighting game. What does not carry over directly is team construction: Tōkon asks you to coordinate assists and switches, while Guilty Gear -Strive- asks you to get more from one active character. Buy it for Arc’s style and fundamentals, not because it reproduces Tōkon’s rules.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose by the experience you want
You want Marvel characters first
Start with Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics. It offers the strongest connection to Marvel crossover fighting-game history. Move to Tōkon when you want a current 4v4 system, modern presentation and its 20-character launch roster.
You want a team fighter with anime spectacle
Choose Dragon Ball FighterZ. It shares the broad appeal of dramatic anime combat and Arc System Works’ development background, while remaining a distinct game with its own mechanics. This is the closest alternative when “team-based anime fighting” is your deciding phrase.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou want Arc System Works’ style but not necessarily a tag game
Choose Guilty Gear -Strive-. Its different match format makes it less similar mechanically, but its visual language and emphasis on expressive characters make it a strong stylistic companion to Tōkon.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
You want offline practice or local matches
All three alternatives should be checked in their current regional listings for exact mode and platform details. Tōkon itself clearly supports Episode Mode, Local Versus, Training Mode, All-Star Arena, Battle Guides and Character Guides offline. That makes it possible to begin learning without a PlayStation Plus subscription on PS5 or a PlayStation account on PC.
You want online lobbies
Compare the platform requirements before purchasing. Tōkon online play requires an internet connection and platform account; PS5 online play also requires PlayStation Plus, while PC online play requires a PlayStation account. The requirements for the alternatives can differ by platform, edition and region, so confirm them on the relevant storefront or publisher support page.
A practical way to play while deciding
- Identify your primary attraction. Write down whether it is Marvel characters, four-person teams, anime presentation, simple inputs or competitive depth. Pick the game that satisfies the first item rather than chasing a vague overall ranking.
- Learn one character before building a full roster. Tōkon’s design explicitly supports focusing on one character. The same approach prevents you from spreading practice too thin in an alternative.
- Use training to answer one question at a time. Test movement, a basic combo, an anti-air response and one assist or defensive option. Do not attempt to memorize an entire command list in one session.
- Play local or offline modes before going online. Story, arcade-style or training content reveals whether the controls feel comfortable. A short local set also shows whether you enjoy the pace without connection quality affecting the result.
- Only then compare online ecosystems. Check the current platform account, subscription and regional availability requirements. A game that fits your preferred mode but cannot be played on your platform is not a practical recommendation.
What “best” can—and cannot—mean here
There is no independent statistic establishing that one of these games is universally superior, nor a named study measuring player preference across them. “Best” in this article means best fit for a clearly stated goal. Marvel crossover history points to Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics; anime team combat points to Dragon Ball FighterZ; Arc System Works’ broader anime fighting style points to Guilty Gear -Strive-.
Tōkon itself should be judged on its own terms. Its official specification is a 4v4 team format with 20 launch characters, adjustable controls, quick inputs, easy chain combos and a mix of offline and online modes. Those are product features, not evidence that it is better than another game. Your preferred camera feel, input response, roster and community will determine the final choice.
Bottom line
If you searched for a game to play “while you wait” for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, update the premise first: Tōkon released on PS5 and PC in August 2026. Pick Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics for Marvel crossover heritage, Dragon Ball FighterZ for the closest anime-oriented team-fighter alternative from Arc System Works, and Guilty Gear -Strive- for Arc’s distinctive presentation and concentrated fundamentals. Then use Tōkon’s offline guides and training modes to build your own four-character team before entering online play.
