A reliable starting profile for a 24/7 church worship stream is 1080p30, H.264, CBR, AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, with a two-second keyframe interval, sent to YouTube over RTMPS. Use 10 Mbps video as a bandwidth-conscious starting point; YouTube Help’s current guidance, checked in 2026, recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. Choose the lower target only if it better fits the sustained upload available at the church. The settings are the same in India as elsewhere; measure the actual connection rather than assuming a location-specific profile.

Choose a bitrate the church connection can hold

These are video bitrates, not the entire network load. Add audio and leave the recommended 20% upload margin. If the internet connection is shared or fluctuates, the lower-resolution profile is usually safer than selecting 1080p and suffering dropped frames or disconnections. A static pulpit shot may not benefit enough from higher resolution to justify an unstable connection; movement, lighting and the source camera also affect perceived quality.
There is no separate India-only encoder profile in YouTube’s guidance. Test the sustained outbound capacity at the actual streaming location, at the time and under the network conditions you expect to use. YouTube warns that total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.

FFmpeg command for a looping worship video
This illustrative command loops a local 1080p30 SDR file and sends its first video and audio streams to YouTube. Replace the media path, ingest URL and key with your own values. It assumes FFmpeg includes libx264 and RTMPS support, and that the source is appropriate for 1080p30.

The 20M buffer shown is twice the example target; adjust it proportionally when changing the target.

For 720p30 H.264, YouTube lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. Set -b:v and -maxrate to a value within that range that your real connection can sustain, and use a proportionate buffer. FFmpeg option behavior can vary by build and release; check ffmpeg -h encoder=libx264 and the local FFmpeg documentation. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which FFmpeg documents as RTMP over a secure SSL connection.

Set up the YouTube stream before going live
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube lists channel verification and no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days among its live-stream prerequisites.
- Create or configure the stream in YouTube Studio. In the channel’s Live Control Room, copy the current ingest URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or leave it in publicly accessible scripts and logs.
- Measure the upload connection at the church. Confirm sustained outbound capacity with at least 20% margin after accounting for the complete stream bitrate and other users or streams on the network.
- Test privately or unlisted. Use representative camera movement and the actual worship audio mix. Check the preview, audio continuity, aspect ratio and stream health before making the broadcast public. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the event.
- Plan for interruptions. Monitor the stream and decide who will respond to encoder, power or internet failures. A single FFmpeg process is not a guarantee of an uninterrupted 24/7 connection.
- Keep a separate local recording if the archive matters. Do not rely on an indefinitely long live stream as the only copy of the service.
Copyright and continuity for church worship
Streaming a song or service does not automatically make its use permissible. Before broadcasting, confirm that the church has the rights or applicable permissions for every song, recording, image and other material in the program, including material played from recordings. A license or permission to perform a work in person may not cover an online live stream or an archived video. Check the terms that apply to the specific works and intended use; do not assume that religious or non-commercial use alone resolves copyright questions.

For 24/7 operation, the encoder settings address only part of reliability. A power loss, router fault, ISP interruption or process failure can stop transmission. Have a person or monitoring procedure that can notice a failed stream and follow a tested recovery plan. The official guidance cited here warns that network disruption can break a stream; it does not promise that encoder parameters will prevent it.
