For a fantasy setting and broad strategy, start with Age of Wonders 4. It is the strongest supported fantasy pick here, but Paradox’s official catalog calls it a “fantasy strategy game”; it does not establish that the game uses Paradox’s continuous, pauseable campaign format. If that specific style of real-time realm management matters more than fantasy, Knights of Honor II: Sovereign is a useful comparison—but it is set in historical Europe, not a fantasy world.
What “Paradox-style” can mean
There is no single feature that makes a game feel like Paradox-style strategy. Some players want a long campaign that runs in real time and can be paused; others care most about political decisions, dynasties and vassals, or managing a state’s economy and military. A fantasy setting is a separate requirement, and it does not guarantee the same campaign structure or political depth.

- Campaign pacing: continuous real time with pause, turn-based progression, or a format that needs checking.
- Scale of rule: an individual dynasty and feudal realm, a nation, or a fantasy faction or empire.
- Political texture: characters, courts, vassals, laws, diplomacy, religion and internal factions.
- Economy and combat: city and resource development, national production and trade, strategic management, or separate tactical or RTS battles.
The official descriptions below support different parts of that wish list. They do not establish a complete, mechanics-by-mechanics comparison, so treat the distinctions as a way to choose what to investigate rather than as proof that the games play alike.

Paradox Interactive’s official catalog presents Age of Wonders 4 as a “fantasy strategy game” and highlights Wizard Kings and the Astral Sea. That makes it the clearest recommendation in this comparison when an invented fantasy world and broad strategy are your first priorities.
#1 Best Overall
- Grand strategy spanning 70 years of global history.
- Card-driven diplomacy, military and industrial system.
- Dynamic alliances and global flashpoints.
- Distinct peace and war phases.
- Supports 1–6 players including solo play.
There is an important limit: the catalog description does not confirm a continuous-time, pauseable campaign, nor does it establish that the game reproduces the dynasty, court and vassal politics associated with Crusader Kings. Choose it for the supported fantasy-strategy fit, not on an assumption that it is a fantasy version of a Paradox grand-strategy game.
Closest real-time realm-management comparison: Knights of Honor II
If campaign pacing and ruling a realm matter more than a fantasy setting, Knights of Honor II: Sovereign is the more relevant adjacent comparison. THQ Nordic describes it as a “fresh take on medieval real-time grand strategy.” Its official site lists religion, diplomacy, city development and a royal court, alongside RTS battles.

- STRATEGY AND ELEGANCE: A captivating blend of strategy and elegance in a luxurious setting.
- TRANSFORM YOUR HOSTEL: Aim to turn your humble hostel into the magnificent Grand Austria Hotel.
That combination offers several familiar realm-management elements, but the setting is historical Europe. It is therefore a comparison for the real-time side of the request, not a fantasy recommendation.
