Both Bethesda games reward leaving the main road. You find optional caves, buildings, factions, environmental stories and quests simply by following a distant landmark. Why it works for Skyrim players
The game offers a world designed to pull you away from the critical path. Villages, roads, wilderness areas and larger settlements contain contracts, investigations, treasure hunts and character stories. The setting is fantasy, but it is more grounded and morally complicated than a conventional heroic quest. Your character can be developed around conventional firearms, close-range weapons, stealth, hacking or combinations of those approaches. Cyberpunk 2077 does not reproduce Fallout’s retro Americana, open wilderness or settlement-construction loop. Atomfall — best post-apocalyptic exploration alternative
Atomfall is an alternative-history survival-action game set in Northern England five years after the Windscale nuclear disaster.
