For most Steam Deck players, start with 1280×800 resolution, Medium detail, High textures, Medium shadow quality and shadow distance, Medium decals, High lighting, Godrays Off, SSAO ambient occlusion, screen-space reflections Off, motion blur Off, and medium object, actor, grass and item fade values. Set the Steam Deck’s TDP limit to 10 W. Windows Central reported that this profile generally stayed between 50 and 60 frames per second, with occasional drops to about 40 fps.
For longer battery sessions, switch to Low detail, Medium textures, lighting and decals, Low shadows and shadow distance, and disable Lens Flare, Motion Blur, Wetness and Rain Occlusion. Keep FSR off when battery life is the priority; it can improve reconstruction quality but draws substantial power. Use FSR mainly while plugged in or docked.

The table is a starting point rather than a guarantee. Fallout 4’s frame rate varies with the scene, and the 50–60 fps observation includes occasional heavy-area drops.

Why these settings work
Resolution and overall detail
Use the Deck’s native 1280×800 target. It avoids rendering extra pixels while preserving the handheld’s full 16:10 display area. Medium overall detail is a sensible balance because it reduces the cost of several scene-quality settings without forcing the visibly simplified Low preset used for battery-first play.
Textures versus shadows
Textures and shadows do not have the same visual value. High textures preserve surface detail on buildings, armor, weapons and terrain, while Medium shadow quality and distance reduce the workload from dynamic shadows. That is why the balanced profile keeps textures High but shadows Medium. For battery play, lower both shadow controls to Low and keep textures at Medium.
Lighting, godrays and ambient occlusion
The balanced profile retains High lighting but turns Godrays Off. Godrays are a high-value performance adjustment: disabling them removes a costly atmospheric effect without reducing the clarity of every object. SSAO ambient occlusion remains enabled to retain contact shading around objects and surfaces.

Turn screen-space reflections Off and motion blur Off. Reflections can add a disproportionate rendering cost for an effect that is easy to miss during movement, while disabling motion blur keeps the image clearer when turning the camera. The battery profile also disables Lens Flare.
Fade distances
Set object, actor, grass and item fade values to Medium in the balanced profile. These controls determine how far different classes of objects remain visible. Medium values avoid the most aggressive pop-in of Low settings without asking the Deck to draw every distant object at maximum range. The battery profile’s Low overall detail reduces this distance-related workload as part of the preset.
How to apply the balanced profile
Use the game’s graphics configuration controls and make the changes in this order. The exact menu names can vary slightly after updates, but the settings themselves are the important part.

- Set display resolution: choose 1280×800.
- Choose overall detail: select Medium.
- Set texture quality: choose High.
- Set shadows: choose Medium for shadow quality and Medium for shadow distance.
- Set decals: choose Medium.
- Set lighting: choose High.
- Disable Godrays: set Godrays to Off.
- Enable ambient occlusion: choose SSAO.
- Disable reflections: set screen-space reflections to Off.
- Disable blur: set motion blur to Off.
- Set fade controls: use Medium for object, actor, grass and item fade.
- Set the power limit: configure the Steam Deck TDP limit to 10 W.
After applying the profile, play in a dense outdoor area and in an interior. If the image is acceptable and heavy scenes remain playable, keep the profile. If you see drops that are more disruptive than occasional dips toward 40 fps, lower shadows first, then overall detail. Do not immediately lower textures: the balanced profile deliberately preserves them at High because they provide visible surface detail for comparatively little benefit from being reduced to Low.

When runtime matters more than foliage, shadow and weather detail, use the following changes:
- Resolution: 1280×800.
- Overall detail: Low.
- Textures: Medium.
- Lighting: Medium.
- Decals: Medium.
- Shadow quality: Low.
- Shadow distance: Low.
- Lens Flare: Off.
- Motion Blur: Off.
- Wetness: Off.
- Rain Occlusion: Off.
- FSR: Off.
This preset cuts the settings that most obviously add environmental work: shadow resolution and reach, wet surfaces, rain interaction and high scene detail. Medium textures prevent the world from becoming unnecessarily soft while the other controls do the battery-saving work.
There is no universal runtime number for this configuration. Battery life depends on the Deck model, screen brightness, frame-rate limit, system load, game area and battery condition. Treat the preset as a way to reduce rendering demand, not as a promise of a specific number of hours.
FSR: when to use it and when to leave it off
FSR can improve reconstructed image quality when the game renders internally at a lower resolution. Its cost is power consumption: Windows Central described it as helpful but power hungry, and Pro Game Guides specifically recommends avoiding it for battery-saving play.

- Plugged in or docked: start with the balanced profile and enable FSR if you prefer its reconstruction over native rendering.
- If the image looks soft: compare FSR Off with FSR On in the same location rather than assuming the higher-power option is always sharper.
FSR is therefore a quality option for a powered session, not a performance setting that automatically extends battery life.

Steam Deck compatibility and first-launch setup
Fallout 4 (Steam App ID 377160) is recorded by SteamDB as Steam Deck Verified. Its compatibility record describes successful SteamOS operation, lists a compatibility test timestamp of 18 June 2024, and identifies Proton 9.0-2RC as the recommended runtime in that record. SteamDB’s compatibility text says: “This game’s default graphics configuration performs well on Steam Deck.”
Verified status means the game has a supported Deck configuration, not that every scene will hold a fixed frame rate. The Windows Central observation of 50–60 fps with occasional drops to about 40 fps illustrates the distinction: the game can perform well overall while still slowing in demanding areas.
Restoring the Fallout 4 launcher
Some updated Steam Deck launch flows hide the traditional Fallout 4 launcher, which also hides its graphics controls. You can restore that path with a launch option.
- Open Steam and select Fallout 4 in your Library.
- Open Properties.
- Stay on the General tab.
- Find Launch Options.
- Enter exactly
SteamDeck=0 %command%. - Close Properties and launch the game.
Capitalization matters. The uppercase S and D, the equals sign, the space before %command% and the percent signs should match the command shown above. Pro Game Guides reports that this restores access to the launcher’s graphics controls. If you later want the normal Deck-specific launch flow, remove the option from the same field.
OLED Deck half-refresh behavior
Some OLED owners have reported a case where Fallout 4 appears to run at roughly half the panel refresh rate. This is a community troubleshooting report, not a universal Steam Deck requirement, so do not change the configuration solely because you own an OLED model.
In the reported case, the author first launched the game once, edited Fallout4Prefs.ini so that iPresentInterval was set to 0, and created a per-game 60 Hz profile. The author reported smoother motion afterward. The report does not establish that the workaround fixes every OLED system, every game build or every frame-pacing problem.

A cautious way to try the workaround
- Launch Fallout 4 once so the preferences file exists.
- Exit the game completely.
- Make a backup copy of
Fallout4Prefs.ini. - Change the
iPresentIntervalvalue to0. - Set a 60 Hz per-game display profile on the OLED Deck.
- Launch the game and compare camera motion in the same location.
If the change introduces tearing, worse pacing or no improvement, restore the backup and remove the per-game profile. Frame pacing can vary by build and device, so this should remain an optional affected-system workaround.
LCD and OLED: what is actually different here?
The graphics recommendations apply to both LCD and OLED Steam Deck models because they target the game’s rendering workload rather than a panel-specific resolution. The OLED distinction matters mainly for the reported half-refresh behavior and its optional workaround.

A practical tuning workflow
Changing one group at a time makes it possible to identify what helped. Use this sequence instead of lowering every option immediately.
- Begin with balanced: apply the 1280×800, Medium/High profile and 10 W TDP.
- Check demanding scenes: compare an outdoor area with foliage and distant objects against an interior.
- Reduce shadows first: move shadow quality and shadow distance from Medium to Low if dips are too frequent.
- Reduce scene detail next: move overall detail to Low if shadow changes are insufficient.
- Protect image clarity: keep textures at High in balanced play or Medium in battery play before sacrificing resolution.
- For battery sessions: disable wetness, rain occlusion and lens flare, and keep FSR Off.
- For powered sessions: return to balanced and test FSR only while plugged in or docked.
This order prioritizes settings that are explicitly identified as useful performance or power adjustments, while avoiding unnecessary changes to every available slider.
Common problems and fixes
The game looks good but battery drain is high
Switch to the battery-first profile, especially Low shadows and shadow distance, Medium lighting, Wetness Off and Rain Occlusion Off. Confirm that FSR is Off; it is not a battery-saving toggle.

Heavy areas dip below the target
Lower shadow quality and shadow distance first. If the dips persist, change overall detail from Medium to Low. Godrays should already be Off in the balanced profile.

The launcher and graphics controls disappeared
Add SteamDeck=0 %command% under Steam → Fallout 4 → Properties → General → Launch Options. Check capitalization and spacing exactly.
Motion looks like half-refresh on an OLED Deck
Do not assume the behavior is universal. If your system shows it, try the reported workaround: run once, set iPresentInterval=0 in Fallout4Prefs.ini, use a 60 Hz per-game profile, and revert if motion or tearing gets worse.
FSR makes the Deck run hotter or drains the battery faster
That behavior is consistent with the available guidance. Reserve FSR for plugged-in or docked play and turn it off for battery-first sessions.

The balanced profile is the best first choice for a mixed session: it retains High textures and High lighting, removes Godrays and screen-space reflections, keeps fade distances at Medium and uses a 10 W TDP limit. The reported result is generally 50–60 fps with occasional dips toward 40 fps, rather than a locked guarantee in every location.
The battery profile makes a deliberate visual trade: Low overall detail and shadows, Medium textures, lighting and decals, and no wetness, rain occlusion, lens flare, motion blur or FSR. It is the appropriate choice when time away from a charger matters more than distant foliage and weather effects.
When connected to power, use balanced as the baseline and enable FSR if its image reconstruction is preferable. If the launcher is hidden, the exact launch option restores the graphics-settings path. OLED owners should treat the half-refresh report and INI edit as optional troubleshooting, not as mandatory configuration.
