Quick answer: which Fallout 4 dialogue mod should you choose?
Use this decision rule:
- You want to know exactly what your character will say: install XDI. It replaces the abbreviated four-choice presentation with readable player dialogue and can display more than four options when a conversation provides them.
- You want a different character premise or a faster route into the Commonwealth: install Start Me Up. Its alternate, quick and normal starts let you choose a different opening, while the full edition also changes many dialogue scenes.
- You want companions and settlers to have more to say: install SCDO. Its author describes additional dialogue for Cait, Curie, Piper, Nick Valentine, Paladin Danse and Hancock, along with expanded settler conversation.
XDI changes how dialogue is presented; it does not create a new quest line or rewrite Fallout 4’s role-playing system. Start Me Up changes the beginning of the game and, in its full edition, edits existing voiced dialogue. SCDO expands conversation content. They can be complementary, but their authors do not establish that every combination is conflict-free.
Comparison at a glance
| Mod | Primary goal | What it changes | Requirements or scope stated by the author | Important conflict or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Extended Dialogue Interface (XDI) | See complete player responses and support larger option lists | Dialogue menu presentation and option structure | Fallout 4 version 1.10.50; F4SE 0.6.0 or higher; Mod Configuration Menu is highly recommended | Its DialogueMenu.swf conflicts with Full Dialogue Interface |
| Start Me Up | Begin as a different character or reach the Commonwealth faster | Opening start choices; full edition makes more than 800 dialogue edits according to its author | Full and basic versions provide different scopes; current platform availability varies | Do not combine casually with other alternate-start mods or major dialogue and quest edits |
| Settler and Companion Dialogue Overhaul (SCDO) | Add more companion and settler conversation | Dialogue content for selected companions, Hancock and settlers | Base game, Automatron, Nuka-World and Vault-Tec Workshop listed as requirements | Place below relevant quest and companion-dialogue edits; the page says PS4 distribution is unavailable because of voice-file restrictions |
Version numbers and platform listings can change. Treat the values above as the requirements stated on the cited mod pages, and compare them with your installed Fallout 4 update before building a load order.

Extended Dialogue Interface: the best choice when dialogue prompts are too vague
What XDI changes
Fallout 4’s standard dialogue wheel often presents a short label instead of the complete sentence your character will deliver. XDI exposes the full player response, making it easier to distinguish a threat from a polite refusal, or a question from a conversation-ending line. The mod description states: "The Extended Dialogue Interface removes the hardcoded 4-option limit on dialogue and adds full engine support for any number of player dialogue options."
In practical terms, XDI is a presentation and interface layer. It does not supply a new backstory, companion quest or alternate ending by itself. Its value is reducing ambiguity before you select a line and allowing other mods to present more than four player options when their dialogue contains them.
Requirements and launch method
The listed requirements are Fallout 4 game version 1.10.50 and Fallout 4 Script Extender (F4SE) 0.6.0 or higher. The author instructs users to launch the game through the F4SE loader rather than the ordinary game shortcut. Because Fallout 4 updates and F4SE releases are version-sensitive, verify the current XDI requirements against your exact game build instead of assuming these numbers remain current.
Mod Configuration Menu is described as highly recommended for in-game configuration. Use it to adjust the interface options exposed by XDI after installation. The author also says XDI retrieves full dialogue dynamically and supports downloadable content and mods that add dialogue without patches; that is the author’s compatibility description, not an independently verified guarantee for every load order.
The interface conflict you must avoid
XDI supplies a file named DialogueMenu.swf. Full Dialogue Interface replaces the same file, so the two mods should not be installed together. If you are moving from one to the other, remove the competing interface file according to the installation instructions for the mod you keep, then check your mod manager for duplicate loose files or overwrite warnings.
Install XDI safely
- Confirm the Fallout 4 build and F4SE version listed by the current XDI page match your installation.
- Install XDI with your normal Fallout 4 mod manager or the method specified on its current page.
- Do not install Full Dialogue Interface alongside it. Resolve any duplicate
DialogueMenu.swffile before launching. - Install Mod Configuration Menu if you want in-game settings; the XDI author strongly recommends it.
- Start Fallout 4 with the F4SE loader.
- Open a conversation and verify that the complete player responses appear. If the menu is unchanged, check that the game was started through F4SE and that another interface mod has not overwritten XDI’s file.
Start Me Up: a different opening for a stronger character premise
What the mod is for
Start Me Up is aimed at players who do not want every character to begin with the same identity and immediate search for Shaun. The author describes alternate, quick and normal start options. That gives you room to role-play a Commonwealth resident, outsider, survivor or other premise before committing to the familiar main-quest setup.

The full version also makes more than 800 dialogue edits, using voiced and lip-synced lines from the game according to the author’s description. A basic version provides the start options without those dialogue edits. Select between them deliberately: the full edition is the broader intervention, while the basic edition is the narrower choice if you mainly want a different starting point and do not want extensive dialogue changes.

Choosing between the full and basic versions
- Choose the full version when your role-play concept depends on the protagonist being recognized and addressed differently during the game, and you accept a larger set of dialogue edits.
- Choose the basic version when alternate, quick or normal starts are the priority and you prefer to leave the game’s dialogue as intact as possible.
The author acknowledges that some dialogue inconsistencies remain and notes platform-specific constraints. Do not interpret the existence of voiced edits as a promise that every line will perfectly reflect your custom backstory.
Install and plan for Start Me Up
- Decide whether the full or basic edition matches your desired scope before installing. They are distinct versions, not two settings that should be stacked.
- Back up your saves. For a genuinely different role-playing experience, begin a new character rather than expecting an existing save to be completely transformed.
- Disable or remove other alternate-start mods. Two mods that both control the opening sequence can compete for the same start quest and related records.
- Install Start Me Up using the current instructions for your platform and edition.
- Select the alternate, quick or normal start that fits your character concept.
- If you also use a mod that substantially changes quests or dialogue, inspect conflicts in FO4Edit before committing to a long playthrough.
- Test the opening and an early conversation on a disposable save. Look for missing objectives, contradictory introductions or a start sequence that does not complete.
The mod is listed on Bethesda’s Creations platform, but a listing alone does not provide a complete compatibility matrix for every current Fallout 4 storefront, update or console edition. Check the live listing and the author’s current instructions for your platform.
Settler and Companion Dialogue Overhaul: more activity from companions and settlers
Who gets additional conversation
SCDO is for players who want the Commonwealth to feel more conversational after the opening hours. The author says the mod was designed around Cait, Curie, Piper, Nick Valentine and Paladin Danse, with Hancock also receiving additional dialogue. The page also describes added settler dialogue content.
This makes SCDO a content expansion rather than a dialogue-display replacement. It will not reveal the full text of a vanilla response the way XDI does, and it does not provide an alternate opening like Start Me Up. Its role is to give selected companions and settlers more opportunities to speak.

The requirements list the base game plus Automatron, Nuka-World and Vault-Tec Workshop. Check that every listed add-on is installed on the same account and platform as Fallout 4 before enabling SCDO. If one is missing, do not assume the mod will simply omit the affected material; follow the current author instructions for the edition you are using.

Load order and record overlap
The author recommends placing SCDO below quest mods and other mods that edit companion dialogue quests. When records overlap, use FO4Edit to inspect which plugin wins. A different mod overwriting a dialogue topic can prevent some SCDO features from appearing even when the game loads normally.
Platform availability
The inspected page says a PS4 release is unavailable because of voice-file restrictions and points to an Xbox version. Console catalogs can change, so verify the current platform listing before planning a console load order. Do not transfer PC requirements such as F4SE to Xbox or PlayStation; use the requirements shown for that platform’s edition.
Choose by role-playing goal, not by a universal ranking
If you want transparent choices
Start with XDI. It is the direct answer to the problem of selecting a short prompt without knowing the full line. This is especially useful for characters whose personality depends on precise distinctions between sarcasm, intimidation, empathy and investigation.

If you want to reject the standard protagonist premise
Start Me Up is the relevant choice. Decide whether the basic start-only version is enough or whether the full version’s extensive dialogue edits are important to your concept. Keep other opening-altering mods out of the same setup unless you have inspected their conflicts.
If your companions feel underused
Choose SCDO, provided you own the required downloadable content and can place it correctly relative to your quest and companion-dialogue mods. Its purpose is breadth of conversation, not a new interface.
If you want all three goals
A plausible design is XDI for readable choices, Start Me Up for the opening premise and SCDO for additional companion conversation. That combination is conceptually complementary, but purpose does not equal technical compatibility. XDI’s interface file, Start Me Up’s start and dialogue records, and SCDO’s dialogue topics can all be affected by other plugins. Build the setup incrementally and test after each major addition.

Platform, edition and utility checklist
- PC: XDI’s listed F4SE dependency makes the PC requirements especially important. Launch through the F4SE loader and verify the script extender build.
- Xbox: Check the current Creations listing for the specific Start Me Up and SCDO editions available to your console. The SCDO page points to an Xbox version.
- PS4: The SCDO page says distribution is unavailable because of voice-file restrictions. Do not assume an equivalent PS4 release exists.
- DLC: SCDO lists Automatron, Nuka-World and Vault-Tec Workshop. Start Me Up and XDI have different scopes; read their current requirement lists rather than borrowing SCDO’s DLC assumptions.
- Game update: XDI’s page lists Fallout 4 1.10.50 and F4SE 0.6.0 or higher. Those values are version-dependent and should be rechecked after a game update.
Conflict prevention and troubleshooting
The dialogue menu still shows short labels
For XDI, first confirm that you launched through the F4SE loader. Next check for Full Dialogue Interface or another mod supplying DialogueMenu.swf. Remove the competing file as directed by the installation notes, then rebuild or redeploy your mod files and test a conversation again.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The game starts in the wrong way
For Start Me Up, look for another alternate-start mod or a plugin that edits the opening quest. Disable the competing start mod, test on a new save and inspect the relevant records in FO4Edit if the problem persists. An existing save may load, but it is a poor test of a fundamentally different opening.
Companion dialogue does not appear
For SCDO, verify the required DLC and inspect its position relative to quest and companion-dialogue plugins. If another plugin overwrites the same dialogue topic, some additions may not appear. FO4Edit can show which record wins; move SCDO below the relevant edits only when that matches the author’s instructions and does not create a new conflict.
A mod manager reports overwrites
Do not resolve every overwrite by blindly choosing the newest file. Identify whether the conflict concerns XDI’s interface file, Start Me Up’s opening and dialogue records, or SCDO’s companion topics. Keep one deliberate winner for each record and avoid installing two mods that are designed to replace the same asset.
A console listing is missing
Platform availability is not static. Search the current Bethesda Creations catalog for the exact mod and edition, and read the platform notes on the author’s page. A PC file, an Xbox port and a PlayStation listing are not interchangeable.

The precise conversationalist
Use XDI alone when your priority is understanding every response before choosing it. This keeps the change focused on information and menu behavior rather than rewriting the opening or adding new companion content.
Best Value
- Next generation of open-world gaming

The Commonwealth local
Use Start Me Up’s alternate start to establish a character who already belongs to the setting, then add XDI if you want every later conversation to reflect deliberate choices. Choose the basic Start Me Up version when you want the premise change without the full edition’s larger dialogue intervention.
The companion-led survivor
Use SCDO for additional exchanges with the named companions and settlers, and add XDI if reading complete lines matters to you. Check the DLC list and place SCDO below relevant dialogue and quest edits before beginning a long save.
The full custom campaign
Combine the three only after testing each one separately. Install and verify the interface layer, then the opening overhaul, then the companion dialogue content. Keep a clean backup before each stage so you can identify which addition introduced a conflict.
What these recommendations do not prove
The mod pages provide author descriptions and installation guidance, not an independently tested compatibility matrix for every Fallout 4 version, storefront, DLC combination or load order. XDI’s dynamic compatibility statement is an author claim. Start Me Up’s figure of more than 800 dialogue edits is also the author’s description, not an independent count. No reliable popularity, frame-rate or performance statistic is established for these recommendations, so this guide does not rank them by downloads or benchmark results.
The most defensible way to choose is therefore functional: XDI for readable options, Start Me Up for a different beginning, and SCDO for more companion and settler conversation. Confirm current files and platform support immediately before installation, because game updates and catalog availability can change the practical requirements.
