For the smoothest Fallout 4 experience, start with the launcher’s auto-detected resolution on PC, then tune one setting at a time while testing a demanding area. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles, choose Performance mode when a steadier 60 FPS target matters most; choose Quality mode for 4K ultra image quality, accepting a 30 FPS target (or 40 FPS on a 120 Hz display). Recheck stability after installing official Creations or mods because updates and larger content loads can change hitching, loading and crash behavior.
Choose the performance target before changing settings
There is no single best preset for every Fallout 4 PC. Bethesda does not publish a universal PC benchmark or one hardware-independent configuration. Your GPU, CPU, display resolution, refresh rate and installed Creations all affect the result. The useful goal is a repeatable frame rate in the places that stress your system, not the highest average number in an empty interior.

PC: build a stable baseline in the launcher
1. Run auto-detection before making manual changes
Open the Fallout 4 launcher rather than launching straight into the game. Bethesda says its auto-detect feature recommends the aspect ratio and resolution for the system configuration. Accept those recommendations for the first test. This gives you a known starting point and avoids lowering resolution unnecessarily on a system that can already handle it.
Change video options outside the game, save the changes, fully exit the launcher and game, and relaunch. A setting that appears selected but was not followed by a complete restart can make troubleshooting confusing. If you use more than one display, confirm that the launcher is configuring the monitor on which you actually play.

2. Test a demanding route, not just the opening menu
Load a save that represents your normal play and travel through a location that usually produces slowdowns, busy settlements, exterior foliage or frequent streaming. Use the same route after every change. Record whether the problem is a consistently low frame rate, a brief hitch while the world loads, a crash, or an input-feel issue. These symptoms can have different causes, so changing several options at once removes useful evidence.
Keep the first test short but repeatable. A setting that looks smooth in an interior may still struggle outdoors, and a large settlement or heavily populated area may reveal a CPU or content-load limit that a quiet corridor does not.
3. Lower resolution before sacrificing every other setting
Bethesda’s performance guidance specifically recommends lowering or disabling graphics settings, including resolution, when performance is poor. If the auto-detected resolution produces sustained slowdowns, reduce it one step and repeat the same test. Resolution changes affect the entire image, so use the smallest reduction that removes the dips you actually notice.

On a high-resolution monitor, you can also test a lower output resolution with the display scaling it to the panel. The result is softer than native resolution, but a stable frame rate is often more comfortable than a sharper image with repeated stutter. Do not judge the change from a static screenshot; compare camera movement and traversal in the demanding route.
4. Reduce or disable additional graphics options one at a time
If resolution alone does not solve the problem, lower the remaining graphics options available in the launcher or game menu individually. Start with the options that create the largest workload on your particular system, then stop as soon as the frame-time spikes are controlled. There is no Bethesda-supported universal order or preset for every PC, so treat this as an adaptive process rather than a promise that one combination works everywhere.

Write down each change. If an option makes little difference, restore it and test the next one. This preserves image quality where your hardware has headroom and prevents the common mistake of turning everything down when only one setting was responsible for the worst drops.
5. Update the graphics driver and close background software
Bethesda recommends installing current NVIDIA or AMD drivers and closing background software when performance is poor. Apply the driver update appropriate to your GPU, restart Windows if the installer requests it, and then retest the same save. Shut down browser windows, recording tools, overlays and other applications that consume CPU, GPU memory or disk activity during loading.
Do not change the game settings at the same time as a driver update if you are trying to identify a cause. First test the existing configuration after the driver update; only then continue with resolution or graphics-option changes.
6. Reset the configuration files only when ordinary tuning fails
A damaged or contradictory configuration can preserve a bad setting even after you change the launcher. Bethesda’s troubleshooting procedure identifies three files to remove when a reset is necessary: Fallout4.ini, Fallout4Custom.ini and Fallout4Prefs.ini. Back up the files before deleting them if you have custom entries you may need later. Start the launcher again so it can recreate default files, run auto-detection, and test before reapplying custom changes.
A configuration reset is a troubleshooting step, not a performance preset. It can remove personal settings and mod-related adjustments, so use it after simpler measures and keep a record of what you restore.

7. Try Borderless or Windowed mode for display-specific problems
Bethesda notes that Windowed or Borderless mode can improve some display or performance problems. Try one of these modes if exclusive fullscreen produces flicker, focus changes, black screens or inconsistent frame pacing. Test each mode separately with the same resolution and route; changing mode and resolution together makes the result harder to interpret.

Performance mode
On PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, Performance mode is the practical default when stable motion matters more than maximum detail. Bethesda’s April 25, 2024 next-generation patch notes describe it as a 60 FPS target at 4K, using standard settings and dynamic resolution scaling. Dynamic scaling allows the internal resolution to vary when the scene becomes demanding, helping the game pursue its frame-rate target instead of holding every frame at a fixed native resolution.
A target is not a guarantee that every scene will remain at exactly 60 FPS. Heavy settlements, streaming events, installed Creations and later patches can still expose hitches. If you experience a new problem after an update, confirm that Performance mode is still selected and test an unmodified save before changing other variables.
Quality mode
Quality mode is for players who prefer the sharpest 4K presentation and ultra settings. Bethesda specifies a 30 FPS target at 4K and says it should not require dynamic resolution scaling. The trade-off is visible immediately in camera motion: 30 FPS has more persistence between frames than a 60 FPS target, even when both are stable.
With a 120 Hz display connected, Bethesda says Quality mode can target 40 FPS. That option is meaningful only when the display and console are actually operating at 120 Hz; a 60 Hz television cannot show a 40 FPS cadence correctly in the same way. Check the console’s display information before choosing this mode for its 40 FPS target.

What happens on a 1440p display
Bethesda states that a 1440p display runs at 1440p and 60 FPS with ultra settings regardless of rendering mode. In that setup, the Performance-versus-Quality switch does not create the same 4K resolution trade-off described above. Choose based on the resulting frame-rate behavior and your own display output, then retest after installing content.
Account for the next-generation content and later patches
The 2024 update added the Enclave Remnants, Makeshift Weapon Pack, Halloween Workshop and other free Creation Club content, along with widescreen and ultrawide support and stability fixes. Bethesda’s update announcement lists 38 Halloween Workshop decorations. These additions are official content, but they still add assets and scripts that can affect loading or the areas where you notice hitching.
Bethesda’s 2026 patch history includes larger Creations storage, additional crash and loading fixes, and fixes for ultrawide performance hitches. Xbox Series X|S storage for Creations can grow to 100 GB according to Bethesda Support. More available storage does not mean every combination of Creations is harmless: a large content load can increase startup time, make troubleshooting harder and alter behavior in heavily modified saves.
After a game update or a major Creation change, use this order:

Practical PC profiles without pretending they are universal
| Profile | Use it when | Adjustment strategy | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stable-first | Frame-time spikes are frequent or the system is near its limit | Keep the launcher-detected aspect ratio, lower resolution one step, then reduce graphics options one at a time until the demanding route is consistent | Lower image sharpness or detail, but fewer severe dips |
| Balanced | The auto-detected baseline is mostly smooth | Keep native or detected resolution and change only the option that correlates with a repeatable hitch | Preserves more image quality while addressing a specific bottleneck |
| Image-first | Frame rate is already acceptable and 4K or ultrawide clarity is the priority | Retain the detected resolution and higher options; switch to Borderless or Windowed only if fullscreen causes a display problem | More demanding scenes may dip, especially with many Creations |
These profiles are decision paths, not tested presets. Bethesda has not established one PC combination that can be called best for every processor, graphics card, display and content load.

Match the setting to your display
60 Hz displays
A 60 Hz panel is naturally suited to a 60 FPS target. On console, Performance mode is the straightforward choice when you want the most responsive motion. On PC, prioritize consistent frame pacing in your demanding route over an uncapped number that repeatedly falls below the display’s refresh interval.
120 Hz displays
A 120 Hz display gives the console Quality mode its specified 40 FPS target option. Verify that the console reports a 120 Hz connection; simply owning a 120 Hz television is not enough if the output is configured to 60 Hz. On PC, use the higher refresh rate as headroom, not as a reason to ignore frame-time spikes.
1440p displays
The console behavior is unusual here: Bethesda specifies 1440p and 60 FPS with ultra settings regardless of rendering mode. On PC, keep the launcher’s detected 1440p resolution as the baseline and lower it only when the repeatable test shows that the GPU cannot sustain your target.

Ultrawide displays
The next-generation update added ultrawide support, while later fixes addressed ultrawide performance hitches. Confirm that the launcher detects the correct aspect ratio and resolution. If hitches appear only on an ultrawide setup, test Borderless or Windowed mode and compare with the same resolution in the other display mode before deleting configuration files.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | First checks | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Low performance everywhere | Launcher defaults, resolution, current GPU driver and background applications | Lower resolution, then reduce other graphics options individually |
| Short hitches during travel or loading | Repeat the route, note whether it coincides with streaming, and test with fewer Creations | Retest after updates; separate official content and mods in small groups |
| Black screen, flicker or focus loss | Fullscreen mode, monitor selection and resolution | Try Borderless or Windowed mode and relaunch |
| Settings keep returning or behave inconsistently | Whether the launcher was fully exited after saving | Back up and remove Fallout4.ini, Fallout4Custom.ini and Fallout4Prefs.ini, then let the launcher recreate them |
| Crashes after adding content | Test a clean or minimally modified save and verify the update completed | Re-enable Creations in groups, keeping a backup save |
Do not assume every hitch is a graphics setting. A content conflict, configuration file, driver, display mode or background process can produce a similar symptom. Change one category at a time so you can undo the change that made the result worse.
A maintenance routine for stable performance
- Keep the launcher’s aspect ratio and resolution aligned with the monitor you actually use.
- After a patch, verify Performance or Quality mode on console and resolution or window mode on PC.
- Keep graphics drivers current and close unnecessary background applications before diagnosing a slowdown.
- Back up saves before installing a large Creation or changing a heavily modified profile.
- Use a repeatable demanding route after each major change instead of judging from the title screen.
- Keep a written record of resolution, graphics options, display mode and active Creations so you can return to the last known-good state.
Bottom line
PC players should begin with Fallout 4’s launcher auto-detection, then tune resolution and other graphics options against a repeatable demanding scene. Update drivers, close background software and reserve INI deletion for genuine configuration troubleshooting. Console players should select Performance for Bethesda’s 60 FPS target, Quality for 4K ultra at a 30 FPS target, or Quality’s 40 FPS target when a 120 Hz display is connected. Because official Creations, mods and later stability patches change the workload, re-test after updates instead of relying on a preset that worked before.
