For political statements, start with FactCheck.org or PolitiFact. For claims from politicians, institutions, media and viral posts, Full Fact is another useful starting point. Treat every rating as an organization’s judgment about a specific wording and evidence set—not as a universal verdict—and follow the links to the underlying records before sharing.
What makes a fact-checking website useful?
No single service checks every country, language, topic or version of a viral claim. A reliable choice is one that explains how it selects claims, identifies the exact wording it assessed, links to primary evidence and shows how it handled uncertainty. The International Fact-Checking Network’s Code of Principles is a practical checklist for judging those qualities, whether or not a particular publisher is currently a signatory.

- Geographic fit: Does the outlet understand the country, institutions, laws and language involved?
- Topic fit: Does it cover the subject—politics, health, science, media, elections or visual misinformation—that you are checking?
- Claim selection: Does it explain why a statement was chosen and focus on claims that are verifiable, consequential or spreading widely?
- Evidence quality: Does the article link to original records, datasets, studies, official statements or other primary material?
- Fairness and contact: Does it apply the same standards to equivalent claims and try to obtain evidence from the person or organization making the claim?
- Corrections and uncertainty: Is there a visible way to correct errors, and does the article distinguish unknowns from proven facts?
- Editorial review: Does the publisher describe independent editing or review before publication?
These checks matter more than a dramatic label. A rating can be accurate for one narrowly defined statement while a reposted version changes the date, location, denominator or meaning.

| Website or framework | Best starting point for | What its published process says | Qualification to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| FactCheck.org | Political statements, speeches, official claims and reader questions | Researchers monitor transcripts, speeches, official websites, press releases and questions; they seek comment, conduct independent research and use primary sources, nonpartisan government agencies and outside experts. Most stories receive line editing, copy editing and line-by-line fact-checking by four people not involved in reporting or writing. | Its page describes a Meta partnership that ran from December 2016 through April 2025 and says the partner had no editorial control. That is historical, not evidence of a current partnership. The page also identifies FactCheck.org as an IFCN verified signatory; current status should be checked on the live roster. |
| PolitiFact | Newsworthy political claims likely to spread or prompt questions about truth | It says claims should be significant, rooted in verifiable facts and checked against original documentation. It publishes sources with each item and contacts, or attempts to contact, the claim maker. | Its six Truth-O-Meter labels are PolitiFact’s own scale. They reflect information known when the statement was made; do not line them up as if they were equivalent to another site’s labels. |
| Full Fact | Claims from politicians, public institutions, media and viral online content | The indexed official methodology summary says each item is reviewed by another researcher before publication. | The methodology page returned a 410 error when accessed. Only the indexed statement about second-researcher review is established here; more detailed workflow claims require a functioning, current methodology page. |
| IFCN Code of Principles | Evaluating a publisher’s transparency and independence | The commitments cover consistent evidence standards, transparent claim selection, interest disclosures, published methodology, evidence supporting and undermining a claim, contact with claim makers and open corrections. | This is a standards framework, not a fact-checking site. Membership or a signatory listing is not proof that every individual article is correct or that an organization’s status has not changed. |
FactCheck.org: a documented, source-heavy process
FactCheck.org’s process page says its staff monitor political transcripts, speeches, official websites, press releases and reader questions for factual statements that may be inaccurate or misleading. Researchers try to engage the person or organization responsible for a claim. When the response does not provide adequate support, they conduct independent research.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
The stated evidence hierarchy emphasizes primary sources, nonpartisan government agencies and outside experts. That makes the site especially useful when a claim can be tested against a bill, regulation, public dataset, transcript, court record or direct statement. Open the citations rather than stopping at the article’s conclusion: the underlying document may reveal a narrower definition, a different time period or a caveat that a social-media post omitted.
The same page describes multiple editorial controls: line editing, copy editing and line-by-line fact-checking. Most stories are reviewed by four people who were not involved in reporting and writing the piece. This is a description of the organization’s process, not a guarantee that an individual article cannot contain an error, so also look for corrections and updated context.
FactCheck.org says its partnership with Meta operated from December 2016 to April 2025 and that Meta had no editorial control over the content. Because that period has ended, do not describe it as a current arrangement. The page also calls FactCheck.org an IFCN verified signatory and says signatories are evaluated annually; verify present status against the current IFCN roster before relying on that designation.
PolitiFact: read the explanation behind the Truth-O-Meter
PolitiFact’s methodology says it chooses claims that are newsworthy and significant, rooted in verifiable facts, likely to spread and likely to make readers ask whether they are true. It publishes sources with every fact-check, gives priority to original documentation and contacts—or attempts to contact—the person who made the statement.
Its Truth-O-Meter has six labels:
| Label | How to use it |
|---|---|
| True | Read the article’s evidence and wording; the label is PolitiFact’s conclusion for that claim. |
| Mostly True | Check the qualifications and context in the explanation rather than treating the label as a percentage. |
| Half True | Look for which parts are supported and which parts are incomplete or misleading. |
| Mostly False | Inspect the specific factual errors and whether any accurate fragment remains. |
| False | Follow the cited records to see what contradicts the statement. |
| Pants on Fire | Read the full reasoning; this is a PolitiFact-specific extreme label, not a universal industry category. |
PolitiFact states that a rating reflects the relative accuracy of a statement based on information known at the time it was made. A later event can change what is known without changing what the speaker could reasonably have known then. Always record the statement’s date and compare the source list with the version circulating now.

Full Fact: broad claim coverage with a limited public methodology record
Full Fact’s official site describes checking claims by politicians, public institutions, media and viral online content. That breadth makes it a sensible search destination when a claim is not confined to a campaign speech—for example, a statistic repeated by a broadcaster or a caption attached to a widely shared video.
The indexed summary of its methodology says each item is reviewed by another researcher before publication. The methodology URL returned a 410 error when opened, so the available evidence does not establish additional details about its review chain, source hierarchy, corrections process or claim-selection rules. Treat the indexed statement as a useful transparency point, then inspect the individual article for citations, dates, uncertainty and any correction notice.
Use the IFCN Code as an evaluation checklist
The International Fact-Checking Network Code of Principles is useful when you encounter an unfamiliar fact-checker or need to compare editorial practices. Its commitments call for applying the same evidentiary standards to equivalent claims, explaining why claims were selected, disclosing relevant interests, publishing methodology, presenting evidence that supports and undermines a claim, contacting claim makers when possible and correcting mistakes openly.
Use those commitments as questions to ask of the article and the organization. The existence of a code does not prove that every conclusion is correct, and a current signatory listing must be checked rather than assumed from an old article or badge. An Associated Press report dated April 2, 2025 counted more than 170 IFCN members at that time; membership numbers and individual statuses can change.
How to choose a site for the claim in front of you
Match the country, institutions and language
A claim about a national budget, election rule or public-health agency is easiest to verify when the checker understands that jurisdiction and can cite its original records. Search in the language used by local officials or media when possible. A result from another country may use the same words but test a different law, currency, agency or reporting period.

Match the subject
Political claims are a natural fit for FactCheck.org and PolitiFact’s published processes. Full Fact explicitly includes politicians, public institutions, media and viral online content. For a scientific or health claim, use a fact-check as a map to the cited study or agency guidance, then read that primary material yourself; a rating is not a substitute for professional advice.

Match the exact version of the claim
Small changes can create a different proposition: “approved” versus “proposed,” one city versus an entire country, or a photograph from one year presented as current. Record the wording, speaker, date, location and attached image or video before searching. If the checker assessed a different version, its conclusion may not apply.
Prefer a site that exposes its work
When two sites cover the same item, favor the article that links to original records, explains how evidence was weighed, identifies uncertainty and shows whether the claim maker was contacted. A polished label without documentation is a lead for further checking, not a final answer.
A six-step workflow for verifying news and viral claims
- Capture the exact claim. Copy the sentence, save the post’s date and note who made it. Preserve the image, video, chart or screenshot because a later edit can change the context. Put the key wording in quotation marks when searching, such as
“exact sentence from the post”. - Search more than one relevant checker. Search the exact wording plus the speaker or location on FactCheck.org, PolitiFact, Full Fact or another outlet that covers the relevant jurisdiction. If no result appears, try distinctive phrases rather than replacing the claim with your own summary.
- Confirm that the article checked the same proposition. Compare the date, place, speaker, image or video, units and time period. Read the claim definition at the top of the article. A post may combine a genuine photograph with a false caption, or recycle an old statistic with a new event.
- Follow the evidence links. Open the cited law, dataset, study, transcript, official statement or direct response. Check whether the source actually says what the fact-check claims and whether its publication date matches the event. Primary documentation is more informative than a screenshot of a headline.
- Look for context, uncertainty and corrections. Note missing denominators, confidence limits, changing forecasts, disputed definitions and language such as “as of” or “preliminary.” Check the article for a correction or update notice. If the evidence is incomplete, retain that uncertainty instead of converting it into a categorical verdict.
- Corroborate important or disputed claims. Compare another organization’s reasoning and consult the primary document directly. Then share the fact-check with its date, claim wording and relevant caveat—not just a one-word rating or cropped screenshot.
How to read evidence instead of just a label
Check what was measured
Ask whether the article is testing a fact, a prediction, an opinion or a causal claim. A numerical statement needs its denominator, population, dates and measurement method. “Unemployment fell” can mean a monthly change, an annual average or a forecast; those are not interchangeable.
Separate primary evidence from commentary
A fact-checker’s summary is secondary analysis. The linked budget table, court filing, scientific paper, transcript or agency release is the primary material. Read enough of it to identify definitions and exceptions. If the article links only to another news story, search for the original record before accepting a strong conclusion.

Notice what would change the conclusion
Good explanations identify limits: a sample that excludes a group, a preliminary count, a statement that changed over time or an image whose location cannot be established. Evidence that cuts against the claim should be visible, not hidden behind a confident headline.
Treat ratings as local scales
PolitiFact’s six Truth-O-Meter labels are defined by PolitiFact. Another publisher’s “false,” “misleading” or “unproven” label may use a different threshold and may evaluate context rather than literal accuracy. Compare the evidence and reasoning, not the labels as if they were standardized measurements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do when fact-checkers disagree
- Check for different claim versions. One article may assess an original quote while another assesses a later paraphrase or edited video.
- Align the time cut-off. Ratings can differ because one article uses information available after the other was published.
- Compare definitions and thresholds. “Created jobs,” “approved,” “caused” and “available” can each have technical meanings that alter the result.
- Read both source lists. Identify which primary record, dataset or study each author relied on and whether either omitted contrary evidence.
- Prefer a qualified conclusion when evidence remains incomplete. Document what is established, what is disputed and what would resolve the dispute instead of forcing a binary answer.
Worked approaches for common claim types
Political statistic
Copy the number and the speaker’s date, then search the exact phrase on FactCheck.org and PolitiFact. Open the cited dataset or official report, verify the denominator and period, and check whether the statistic describes a level, a change or a forecast. If the speaker’s wording has shifted, assess each version separately.
Viral image or video
Search the caption and distinctive wording on Full Fact and other outlets that cover viral content. Confirm whether the fact-check identifies the original event, location and date. Follow any links to the earliest available record or direct statement. Do not assume that a real image proves the caption attached to it.
Institutional announcement
Search the institution’s own release or public document, then compare it with the fact-check’s interpretation. Look for legal or technical terms that a repost may have simplified. Record whether the announcement is a proposal, a final rule, a pilot or a statement of intent.
Best Value
Breaking news
Expect early articles to be updated as officials confirm details. Note the publication and update times, preserve the original wording and revisit the primary statement. A later correction does not necessarily mean every earlier detail was fabricated; it may reflect information that was unavailable at first.
How much confidence should you place in the organizations?
Fact-checking is resource-intensive, and staffing varies. The Poynter/IFCN State of Fact-Checkers 2023 survey, published in 2024, recorded 137 responses: 68% of surveyed organizations had 10 or fewer full-time employees, while 6.6% employed 31 or more. The same survey reported that 49.6% of respondents had increased staff and 5.8% had reduced their workforce. These are survey findings, not a census of every fact-checker, and they do not measure the accuracy of any individual outlet.
Small teams can produce careful work, but limited capacity may affect how quickly a new claim is checked, how many languages are covered or how often older articles are updated. Use the article’s citations and correction notices to judge the item you are reading rather than inferring quality from staff size alone.
Recommended Free Tools
In an Associated Press report published April 2, 2025, IFCN director Angie Drobnic Holan said, “Disinformation hurts people. It has real-world consequences.” The report counted more than 170 IFCN members at that time. That figure provides context about the scale of the field, not a current directory or a guarantee that every member covers your claim.
Common mistakes that make verification fail
- Searching only a paraphrase: distinctive original wording is easier to match than a summary that changes the proposition.
- Stopping at the badge or rating: open the source list and read the explanation.
- Comparing labels across organizations: ratings are not a common scale.
- Ignoring dates: a true statement at one point can become outdated, and a later correction can reflect newly available evidence.
- Confusing a real media file with a true caption: verify where, when and why an image or video was created.
- Overlooking uncertainty: “not established” is different from “false,” and preliminary figures can change.
- Assuming an old affiliation is current: partnerships, signatory status and staffing change; verify present claims on current organizational pages.
- Sharing without context: include the claim wording, publication date and the key qualification so recipients can reproduce the check.
A concise decision rule
Start with the checker that best matches the claim’s geography and subject. Confirm that it assessed the same wording and time period. Follow its links to primary evidence, look for context and uncertainty, and compare another organization when the stakes or disagreement justify it. A fact-checking website is a well-researched starting point; the evidence behind its conclusion is what lets you decide whether the claim should be believed or shared.
