If you want a playable extraction shooter while Gray Zone Warfare continues development, start with Delta Force Operations: it is free-to-play and offers squad deployments built around finding loot, facing rival players and extracting. The best fit still depends on what you want from Gray Zone Warfare—PvE exploration, deliberate tactical play, persistent progression or PvP pressure. One prominent alternative, Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ, is announced for October 23, 2026, so it is a game to watch rather than one to play today.
Which extraction shooter should you try first?
| Game or mode | Best fit if you want | What is established | Availability context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delta Force: Operations | A free-to-play, squad-based extraction mode in a larger tactical shooter | Three-person squads search for valuables, contend with rival players and extract by different methods. Delta Force also has a separate PvE Raid mode. | The official site labels Delta Force free-to-play; check its current store listing for platform and regional details. |
| Modern Warfare 4: DMZ | Mission-led deployments and persistent inventory progression | The announced mode includes persistent inventory, an upgradeable Forward Operating Base, missions and a changing combat zone. | Xbox Wire lists October 23, 2026 as the scheduled release date for Modern Warfare 4 and DMZ. It is upcoming as of October 4, 2026. |
| Escape from Tarkov | A candidate to investigate if you want a more demanding extraction-shooter experience | It appears in contemporary genre roundups; the evidence here does not establish a current feature-by-feature comparison with Gray Zone Warfare. | Check the official store for current availability, price and platform. |
| Hunt: Showdown 1896 | A candidate to investigate if you want a different setting within the extraction-shooter genre | It appears in contemporary genre roundups; confirm whether its current play style matches your preferences in official game materials. | Check the official store for current availability, price and platform. |
| Arena Breakout: Infinite | Another option to compare if you want an extraction-focused shooter | It appears in contemporary genre roundups, but a detailed official comparison is not established here. | Check the official store for current availability, price and platform. |
| ARC Raiders | A further genre option to explore | It appears in contemporary genre roundups; verify its current modes and fit using official materials. | Check the official store for current availability, price and platform. |
| Incursion: Red River | A further candidate for players comparing extraction shooters | It appears in contemporary genre roundups; the evidence here does not support a detailed head-to-head assessment. | Check the official store for current availability, price and platform. |
Why Gray Zone Warfare’s development status matters
Gray Zone Warfare is still in development, not a finished release. Its official site’s October 1, 2026 Update 0.5 teaser describes a transition from pre-alpha to alpha and says the update introduces a new gameplay loop. That makes it useful as a point of comparison, but avoid treating its current state as a stable final version when deciding what to play.

Its official description presents the game as PvE-first. If that is the part you value, look closely at whether an alternative separates cooperative PvE from PvP, or puts both threats in the same mode. The existence of a similarly named extraction loop alone does not guarantee the same kind of session.

Delta Force is the best-supported first stop for a player seeking a readily accessible alternative: its official site calls it free-to-play, and its Operations mode has the familiar deploy, search, contest and extract rhythm. Xbox Wire describes squads searching for valuables, fighting rival players and extracting, while Delta Force’s official materials specify three-person squads and multiple extraction methods.
#1 Best Overall
- Includes Buddy Pass: Invite 2 friends to play with you for FREE for 14 days.
- Play alone or with friends from any platform in this 1- to 3-player co-op PvE FPS.
- 69 guns, 25 gadgets, 18 operators with progression levels, 12 large dynamic maps, 13 mutating enemies, and free post-launch content.
- Test your skills with 4 adjustable difficulty levels and a thrilling Endgame ranked mode.
- Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege Players: Get 4 EXCLUSIVE Epic gearsets across both games and instantly unlock all 18 Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Extraction operators in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege.
If you would rather focus on cooperative objectives than rival-player encounters, Delta Force also offers a separate PvE Raid mode. That is a meaningful distinction: Raid is not simply another name for Operations, so choose based on whether you want PvP pressure alongside the extraction run.
Those facts do not establish that Delta Force has better balance, matchmaking or monetization than Gray Zone Warfare. Treat free-to-play as an entry-cost description, not a claim that every item or feature is free.

Should you wait for Modern Warfare 4 DMZ?
Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ is the most relevant upcoming option in this shortlist if long-term inventory and mission progression are what attract you. In an official Xbox Wire preview, the developers describe persistent inventory, an upgradeable Forward Operating Base, missions and a combat zone that changes. Studio Multiplayer Creative Director Joe Cecot called it “an action extraction shooter.”

How to choose among the other genre candidates
Escape from Tarkov, Hunt: Showdown 1896, Arena Breakout: Infinite, ARC Raiders and Incursion: Red River appear in contemporary extraction-shooter roundups. Those lists are useful for discovery, but they do not establish a reliable current ranking or prove that any one of these games recreates Gray Zone Warfare’s particular mix.
