First, confirm that your washer really lacks a cleanable filter
Washer manufacturers use different lint-management designs. A missing access door does not necessarily mean the machine is defective or that an internal filter can be added.

Automatic disposal on some models
Fisher & Paykel documents machines supplied without lint filters because lint is handled by automatic disposal. On a design like this, adding an external filter is a plumbing choice, not a repair to a missing component.

All-in-one machines
LG USA states: “LG all-in-one washers do not have a lint filter that requires cleaning.” Its owner guidance directs users to the drain-pump filter instead. That pump filter is for servicing the appliance’s drainage system; it is not automatically a substitute for an external lint-capture system in the drain line.
Top-load machines made after older filter designs
GE Appliances says most top-load washers made since 2001 removed fine-mesh lint filters from the drainage system as pump and drain-hole designs changed. GE also warns: “A Filter-Flo pan cannot be added to a model that did not originally come with one.” Do not try to retrofit an internal pan or filter assembly unless the model documentation specifically supports it.
Model-specific locations
Maytag places filters in different locations depending on the model. The owner manual is therefore the first compatibility check for any brand, age or configuration. Look for instructions covering a drain-pump filter, coin trap, wash-basket filter or lint-filter cleaning. If the manual says lint is disposed of automatically, an external filter can still be considered, but it must be compatible with the drain plumbing and discharge arrangement.
What an external washer lint filter does
An external filter sits in the washing machine’s wastewater path, usually between the drain hose and the point where water enters a standpipe, utility sink or drain trough. It catches lint and other suspended debris before that material reaches the household drain. The accessory does not change the washer’s wash program, and it does not turn a machine without an internal filter into one with a factory-approved internal assembly.
Because the filter is outside the cabinet, you gain access for inspection and cleaning. You also assume responsibility for keeping the passage open. A loaded screen can restrict discharge, trigger a drain error, force water back toward the washer or spill at the filter connection. Installation must therefore include a plan for blocked-flow and overflow conditions.

The table shows why a universal ranking would be misleading. A filter that is excellent on a wall-mounted drain can be impractical when the washer empties into a narrow sink, while a small sock may be easy to install but require attention after every few loads.
1. Filtrol 160: the clearest named household system
A Swedish Environmental Protection Agency report describes the Filtrol 160 as an external filter fixed to the wall and attached to the washing-machine drain pipe. That arrangement makes it the most straightforward named option for a home whose washer has no accessible internal lint trap, provided the drain hose can reach the installation point and the owner can keep the filter accessible.

- The filter is outside the washer, so you do not need to modify the cabinet or add an unsupported internal filter pan.
- Wall mounting can keep the filter stable and visible rather than leaving a loose screen at the sink edge.

Questions to verify before purchase
- What drain-hose diameter and connection method does the current model accept?
- Does the installation require a particular hose length, clamp or wall clearance?
- How is the housing opened and cleaned, and where does removed lint go?
- Is the model currently sold and supported in your country?
- What happens if the screen becomes blocked during a long drain?
No capture-rate percentage, universal service interval or current retail price for Filtrol 160 is published. Treat those as model- and region-specific details to confirm in the current instructions rather than assuming performance from the product name.
2. PlanetCare: modular media and installation flexibility
The same environmental report describes PlanetCare as a modular system that can be installed in a drain-pump-filter position or on the drain pipe as an external filter. That gives it two possible integration paths, but the correct path depends on the washer design and the particular kit.
When its modular approach is useful

Compatibility checks
Do not assume that a kit described as fitting a drain-pump position can be inserted into every washer. Confirm that the manufacturer lists your model or connection type, that the pump-filter access can be reached without defeating a seal, and that servicing the filter will not require unsafe access to electrical or moving parts. If you use the external drain-pipe configuration, apply the same hose, support and overflow checks as for any other external filter.

3. Mesh traps and nylon lint socks: the low-cost route
A metal-wire lint trap or nylon sock attached to the drain pipe is the simplest approach identified in the environmental report. It is most plausible when the washer discharges into a utility sink or an accessible standpipe where you can see the trap during every load.
Advantages
- Low complexity and usually low purchase cost compared with a dedicated housing.
- Easy visual confirmation of collected lint.
- Useful for a temporary installation or a rental where permanent wall mounting is undesirable.
Limitations
- The small opening can load quickly, especially when washing lint-shedding fabrics.
- A loose sock can detach, allowing lint through or sending water over the sink edge.
- A screen that is forgotten can become a flow restriction and create a drain or overflow problem.
How to make a mesh installation safer
Use a connection method that matches the drain hose and keeps the trap from twisting or dropping into the sink. Support the hose independently if the trap’s weight would pull on the washer outlet. Position the collection point where you can inspect it without moving the appliance. Keep the sink or standpipe opening unobstructed, and test a full drain while watching for leaks and rising water.
4. Commercial lint interceptors for shared laundry
H-M Company sells drain troughs and lint interceptors for commercial laundry. Its product information describes lint filtration and an emergency overflow feature, and lists 3/8-inch lint-filter holes for its commercial drain-trough product.
That equipment belongs in a separate category from a household hose trap. Multifamily laundry rooms, laundromats and other shared facilities may need a larger trough, controlled discharge and an overflow provision that protects a room serving many machines. A single household generally does not need a commercial trough unless the plumbing and building operator specifically require it. Confirm local plumbing, maintenance and installation requirements before selecting commercial equipment.

Compatibility checklist before ordering
Measure and document the installation rather than choosing by the washer’s brand name alone.
- Read the owner manual. Identify whether the machine has a drain-pump filter, an automatic lint-disposal design or a model-specific internal filter. Confirm that the manual does not prohibit changes to the drain arrangement.
- Trace the discharge route. Note whether the hose empties into a utility sink, an open standpipe, a closed drain connection or a trough. An external filter must be installed where all washer discharge passes through it.
- Measure the hose and connection. Record the outside diameter, inside diameter and usable hose length. Match the filter’s specified fittings; do not stretch a hose over an incompatible barb or rely on an unrestrained friction fit.
- Check elevation and support. The filter and hose must remain supported at the heights required by the washer and the filter instructions. Avoid sharp bends that could collapse the hose or slow discharge.
- Reserve cleaning access. Leave enough room to open the housing, remove media and place a container beneath it. Do not bury the filter behind the washer or inside a sealed cabinet.
- Plan for a blockage. Decide where water would go if the filter were full. Use a sink or drain location that can receive the discharge, and consider a visible overflow path or the product’s specified overflow protection.
- Confirm local requirements. A landlord, building manager or plumber may require an air gap, a particular standpipe arrangement or approval for changes to a shared drain.
Generic installation and commissioning procedure
Exact fittings and mounting instructions vary by product. Use this sequence as a planning and testing procedure, not as a replacement for the filter or washer manual.
- Unplug the washer and empty the hose. Stop a cycle, disconnect power and allow residual water to drain into a suitable container. Keep water away from electrical connections.
- Choose the filter location. For a wall-mounted unit, select solid support near the drain route and within reach for cleaning. For a sink or standpipe trap, choose a position that remains visible and cannot be knocked loose.
- Install the specified fittings. Use only the supplied or approved connectors, gaskets and clamps. Ensure the washer hose enters the filter inlet and the filter outlet leads to the drain destination shown in the instructions.
- Secure every connection. Check that clamps are tight without cutting the hose. Support the hose so its weight is not carried by a plastic filter port or the washer’s drain outlet.
- Keep the discharge opening correct. Do not seal a standpipe or sink connection in a way that removes the required air gap or prevents visible overflow. Follow the washer and plumbing instructions for the drain opening.
- Run a controlled test. Start with a rinse or drain while watching every joint. Confirm that the filter fills in the intended direction, the washer completes its drain and no water rises at the sink or standpipe.
- Inspect after the first loads. Check for dampness, hose movement and collected lint. Re-tighten or reposition only when the machine is stopped and unplugged.
Cleaning and maintenance
External filtration works only when the flow path stays open. Inspect the filter before lint accumulation becomes a restriction, and follow the product’s cleaning and media-replacement instructions. The correct interval depends on the filter, load size, fabrics and washer use; no single schedule applies to every external product.
What the manufacturer guidance does—and does not—tell you
GE says removable Spacemaker wash-basket lint filters on models made since June 2018 should be cleaned once per month. That is guidance for that built-in design, not a universal interval for an external Filtrol, PlanetCare, mesh or nylon filter. Use it as an illustration of why a documented schedule matters, not as a rule for every washer.
A practical inspection routine
- Look at the filter after initial installation and after unusually lint-heavy loads.
- Remove lint before it forms a mat over the usable screen area.
- Rinse or replace media only as the product instructions allow; some modular media are intended to be replaced rather than washed.
- Check clamps, seals and wall mounts whenever the filter is opened.
- Keep a container or towel ready so cleaning does not turn into an uncontrolled spill.
Overflow, clogging and failure symptoms
Water rises in the utility sink
Pause the washer and stop the cycle if possible. A full trap, a kinked hose or an undersized connection may be restricting flow. Do not continue running loads until the filter is cleaned and the sink or standpipe can accept the discharge.

The washer reports a drain error
Check for a blocked external filter, a collapsed hose and an incorrectly oriented inlet or outlet. Also consult the washer manual for its drain-pump filter procedure. An external accessory does not eliminate the possibility of a blockage inside the machine.
Water leaks at a joint
Stop the washer, unplug it and dry the area before inspecting the connection. Verify that the hose is fully seated, the gasket is present and the clamp is appropriate. Replace damaged hose or fittings rather than compensating with tape or an improvised seal.
The trap detaches from a sink or standpipe
Do not resume washing until the attachment is mechanically secure. A sock or mesh trap that can swing out of the opening is not reliable enough for unattended drainage. Add the specified support or choose a fixed housing.

What performance claims you can and cannot make
An external filter can collect visible lint and other debris that would otherwise enter the drain, but no independent head-to-head capture-rate or microplastic-removal percentage for the named products is published. Do not treat a finer-looking screen, a larger housing or a marketing term as proof of a specific removal rate.
Performance also depends on installation. A filter that is bypassed by a second drain route cannot capture all discharge. A screen that clogs quickly may force the owner to remove it, defeating the purpose. A well-supported, accessible filter operated within its instructions is more useful than a nominally finer filter that cannot be serviced safely.
Cost and ownership considerations
Current retail prices, replacement-media prices and country-specific listings for Filtrol 160, PlanetCare or household mesh traps are not published. Budget for more than the initial housing: compatible hose fittings, clamps, a wall mount if required, replacement media and time spent cleaning are part of ownership.
Before ordering, check shipping and support in your country, the recurring cost of media or screens, and whether the filter can be opened without moving the washer. A low purchase price is not economical if the trap is inaccessible, repeatedly overflows or requires an unsupported adapter.
Bottom-line decision
Start with the owner manual and the drain layout, not with a generic “washer lint trap” search. Choose Filtrol 160 when a wall-mounted external housing matches your hose and you want a dedicated household installation.
