Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThere is no single best external hard drive for every Mac. Choose a portable hard disk drive (HDD) for economical capacity and backups, a desktop HDD for large amounts of desk-based storage, or a solid-state drive (SSD) when speed, compactness or ruggedness matters more. Before buying, check the ports on your exact Mac and whether the drive’s cable matches.
Choose by how you will use the drive
The practical divide is between capacity and convenience on one side, and speed and portability on the other. HDDs generally offer more storage for the money; SSDs are faster and smaller, making them more suitable for frequent transfers of large files. Compare the price per terabyte for the capacities you are considering, rather than choosing by headline capacity alone. Prices vary by seller and capacity, so check current listings before buying.

- For backups and media storage: A portable HDD is a sensible fit if you mainly store files or let backups run in the background and do not need SSD-class transfer speeds.
- For a fixed desk setup: A desktop HDD can provide much greater capacity, but may require a separate power adapter and outlet.
- For frequent large transfers or travel: An SSD is typically faster and more compact. If the drive will be exposed to rough conditions, compare its stated durability and certification as well as its interface.
Mac-friendly drive options by use case
The following products illustrate different fits, not a universal ranking. Capacities and reported specifications below come from the cited 2026 buying guides; check the exact model and configuration before purchase.

| Portable HDD for value and capacity | Macworld’s June 24, 2026 guide lists the WD My Passport Ultra for Mac with USB-C and capacities up to 6TB. It says the drive suits media storage and background Time Machine backups. Macworld | It is an HDD, so do not expect SSD-level transfer performance. |
| Portable HDD with security features | Macworld lists the Seagate Ultra Touch HDD in 2TB, 4TB and 5TB versions, with USB-C, password protection and encryption. Macworld | Macworld describes performance as average and says the higher-capacity versions are larger and heavier than the original design. |
| High-capacity desktop HDD | Macworld lists the Seagate Expansion Desktop at capacities up to 24TB. In Macworld’s test, its 16TB unit reached almost 280MB/s. Macworld | That speed is a reviewer measurement of one test unit, not a guarantee for every configuration or workload. The drive requires an AC adapter. |
| Mac-formatted desktop HDD | TechRadar’s 2026 guide lists the SanDisk Professional G-DRIVE Desktop at up to 22TB, with USB 10Gbps and Mac pre-formatting. TechRadar | It remains an HDD, slower than an SSD, and TechRadar notes that it does not include a USB-A cable. |
| Fast, compact or rugged storage | TechRadar lists the LaCie Rugged SSD Pro5 with Thunderbolt 5, capacities up to 8TB and IP68 certification. TechRadar | It is an SSD rather than a conventional capacity-focused HDD. Confirm your Mac supports the interface speed you want to use. |
Check your Mac’s port, cable and power needs
“Mac-compatible” does not tell you which connector or cable is included, or whether your Mac can use a drive at its maximum interface speed. USB-C describes a connector shape; Thunderbolt and USB data standards describe connection capabilities. A USB-C plug alone does not establish Thunderbolt support.

- Identify the ports on your exact Mac model using Apple’s guide to identifying Mac ports. MacBook and iMac models differ across generations.
- Check the drive’s listed interface and included cable, then compare the connector with your Mac’s port.
- If they do not match, determine whether an appropriate adapter is available. Apple notes that an adapter can connect a device that does not match the Mac’s port.
- If you are considering a desktop drive, check whether it needs an AC adapter and make sure your setup has a convenient outlet.
Choose a format for your workflow
Format choice depends on what you will do with the drive; there is no rule that every external drive used with a Mac must be APFS. For cross-platform file sharing, TechRadar notes that ExFAT works with Mac and Windows. It also cautions that disconnecting a drive while it is writing can risk corruption or data loss. TechRadar
For Final Cut Pro, Motion or Compressor
Apple’s July 11, 2024 guidance says: “Use the APFS format for external storage devices like USB drives that you want to use with Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Compressor on Mac.” Apple also warns that storage sold as ExFAT or FAT32 may not perform as expected with those applications. What to compare before you buy
- Capacity and cost: Compare the capacity you need with the price per terabyte, and verify the exact configuration because product ranges can include several sizes.
- Transfer demands: For occasional backups or a media archive, HDD performance may be adequate. Frequent transfers of large files favor an SSD.
- Portability and power: A bus-powered portable drive avoids a separate power supply; a desktop model may offer more capacity but needs desk space and, in some cases, an AC adapter.
- Connection details: Check the drive’s protocol, your Mac’s port and the included cable. Do not assume the connector shape tells you the available speed.
- Format and sharing: Match the format to your applications and whether you need to move files between Mac and Windows systems.
- Security and extras: If password protection or encryption matters, verify that the specific model and capacity you plan to buy include those features.
