Best EXILED Plugins for SCP: Secret Laboratory Servers: A Goal-Based Guide

The best EXILED plugin is the one that solves your server’s specific problem and remains compatible with your current SCP: Secret Laboratory and EXILED versions. There is no official, permanently ranked catalog of third-party plugins. Choose by compatibility, purpose, permissions, operational risk, maintenance quality, and rollback options rather than download counts alone.

Use the category guide below to build a shortlist, then install and test each DLL independently. EXILED is the framework; every feature plugin is a separate assembly that must be checked against the author’s current release notes and requirements.

What EXILED is—and what a plugin is

EXILED is a high-level plugin framework for SCP: Secret Laboratory servers. Its event system lets developers react to server events, manipulate game behavior, or add functions that are not present in the base configuration. EXILED loads through Northwood’s Plugin API while keeping framework code outside the server assembly. That separation is intended to reduce the effect of small game updates, although it cannot guarantee that every third-party plugin will survive a breaking change.

Think of the stack as three layers:

  • Dedicated server: the SCP:SL process and its normal configuration.
  • EXILED: the framework that exposes events, loading, configuration, and plugin management.
  • Plugin DLLs: independent assemblies that implement moderation tools, custom roles, round rules, integrations, diagnostics, or other features.

That distinction matters when troubleshooting. Updating EXILED does not automatically update a plugin, and replacing one plugin DLL does not change the framework version. A server can therefore have a current framework but an obsolete plugin, or a compatible plugin that conflicts with another plugin’s event handlers.

How to decide which plugin is “best”

Use these five gates in order. A plugin that fails the first gate should not reach production, regardless of how attractive its feature list looks.

Gate Questions to answer Evidence to look for
Compatibility Does it support the SCP:SL version and EXILED build you actually run? A release note, requirement list, or author statement naming the supported versions; recent issue activity when the game updates.
Purpose fit Does it solve a defined problem for your community? A clear feature description, configuration reference, and examples that match your rules.
Operational safety Can you control permissions, disable risky features, and recover quickly? Explicit permission nodes, feature flags, understandable defaults, logs, and a documented uninstall path.
Maintenance Will someone likely fix it after a game or framework change? Release history, answered issues, changelogs, and current documentation.
Lifecycle behavior Can it be reloaded safely, or does it require a restart? Author guidance about dynamic updates, state persistence, and known reload limitations.

Popularity is not a substitute for these checks. A widely downloaded plugin can still be stale, over-permissioned, or incompatible with your server’s rules. Conversely, a small utility may be an excellent choice if it is maintained and narrowly scoped.

Best plugin categories by server goal

The official EXILED material does not publish a ranked third-party catalog. The practical way to choose is to start with the job you need done, then compare plugins inside that category.

Administration and moderation

Administration plugins are appropriate when staff need consistent tools rather than ad-hoc console commands. Look for permission-aware controls, staff-only commands, player reporting workflows, punishment history, and audit logs. A useful moderation plugin should make it obvious who performed an action, which player was affected, and when it happened.

  • Check whether permissions are separate for viewing reports, investigating players, muting, kicking, banning, and reversing an action.
  • Confirm that sensitive commands are denied by default to ordinary players.
  • Verify whether actions are logged locally and whether the log format is usable during an appeal.
  • Test behavior when a target disconnects, changes role, or reconnects before staff finish an action.

Avoid installing several plugins that all replace the same punishment or report command. Decide which component is authoritative, then disable overlapping features in the others.

Quality-of-life features

Quality-of-life plugins improve clarity or reduce routine friction without fundamentally changing the game. Examples of goals include clearer round information, smoother round transitions, spectator improvements, queue handling, and configurable conveniences.

These plugins should be evaluated for configurability. A convenience that is helpful in a casual server may undermine a hardcore ruleset. Check message frequency, cooldowns, spectator visibility, and whether features can be enabled separately. Excessive announcements can also obscure moderation messages or produce noisy logs.

Custom roles and gamemodes

Custom-role and gamemode plugins are the most visible way to change gameplay. They may add alternate objectives, round modifiers, event rules, or new role distributions. Their risk is correspondingly higher because they can touch spawning, inventory, damage, team logic, and round-ending conditions.

  • Read the role and spawn requirements before installation; confirm that the plugin explains how it handles maps, team sizes, and unavailable items.
  • Test unusual paths: a player disconnecting during assignment, a round ending early, or an administrator forcing a role change.
  • Check whether the plugin changes win conditions or only adds optional events.
  • Run it alone first. Add other gameplay-changing plugins only after the base behavior is stable.

For a public server, announce the rules that a custom mode changes. Players should know whether an unfamiliar role, objective, or round modifier is intentional rather than a bug.

Progression and economy

Progression plugins can add persistent rewards, currencies, levels, or unlocks. They require more operational discipline than a round-only feature because player data must survive restarts and upgrades.

Before choosing one, identify where data is stored, how backups are made, and what happens if a configuration key is renamed. Establish a reset policy for exploits and a procedure for correcting an individual player without editing files blindly. If the plugin does not document persistence and recovery, treat that omission as a production risk.

Communications and integrations

Integration plugins can send events to Discord, webhooks, status feeds, or external management systems. Their value is highest when staff need information away from the game server, but they also expand the security boundary.

  • Use a dedicated token or webhook with the minimum permissions required.
  • Keep secrets out of public configuration snippets and staff screenshots.
  • Check retry behavior when the external service is unavailable; a failed webhook should not stall a round.
  • Confirm whether player names, reports, or moderation actions leave the server and who can view them.

Logging, metrics, and diagnostics

Diagnostic plugins help explain crashes, errors, performance spikes, and plugin conflicts. They are particularly useful while introducing a larger gameplay plugin.

Prefer tools that identify the event, plugin, and timestamp associated with an error instead of simply producing more text. Keep retention bounded so logs do not consume the server volume. If a diagnostic plugin changes timing or hooks many events, compare performance with it enabled and disabled.

Installation prerequisites

Before downloading a DLL, record the exact SCP:SL server version and EXILED build. Read the plugin’s own requirements and release notes; a framework update can leave an older plugin unusable even when EXILED itself loads normally.

  • Access to the Windows or Linux account that runs the dedicated server.
  • Permission to stop the server, copy files, and edit its EXILED configuration.
  • A backup location for the previous DLL and the server’s configuration.
  • A staging server or maintenance window for first-run testing.

Download the release DLL from a source controlled by the plugin author. Do not rename assemblies unless the author explicitly instructs you to do so; filenames and dependency resolution can matter during loading.

Install EXILED and a plugin on Windows

Use the official EXILED installer or the project’s documented manual method for Windows. The framework must be installed before any EXILED plugin can load.

  1. Stop the SCP:SL server and make a backup of its current configuration and plugin directory.
  2. Install EXILED using the Windows instructions for the server account. Confirm that the installer targets the same server instance you intend to run.
  3. Start the server once so EXILED creates its directories, then stop it again before adding third-party assemblies.
  4. Download the plugin’s .dll release and place it in the EXILED Plugins directory under the user’s roaming AppData EXILED path (commonly represented as %AppData%EXILEDPlugins).
  5. Start the server and watch the console and log files for the plugin’s load message or an exception.
  6. Open the EXILED per-server-port YAML configuration file that the plugin generated, review every default, and set permissions and feature flags before allowing players to join.

If the server runs under a service account, its roaming AppData directory is different from the interactive administrator’s directory. Installing the DLL in the wrong user profile makes the plugin appear to be missing.

Install EXILED and a plugin on Linux

Follow EXILED’s Linux installer or manual instructions as appropriate for your distribution. The important detail is the identity of the account that launches the server.

  1. Stop the server and copy the existing EXILED configuration and plugin files to a dated backup directory.
  2. Install EXILED for the dedicated server user, not for an unrelated login account.
  3. Launch the server once, then stop it after EXILED creates its configuration tree.
  4. Copy the plugin’s .dll into ~/.config/EXILED/Plugins for that same server user.
  5. Check ownership and permissions so the server process can read the DLL and write its generated YAML configuration.
  6. Start the server, inspect logs, and edit the per-port EXILED YAML file before opening the port publicly.

When multiple SCP:SL instances run on one Linux host, each process may use a different home directory or server port. Verify which home and configuration path belong to each instance instead of assuming that one global Plugins folder serves all processes.

Configuration, permissions, and reloads

EXILED normally stores plugin configuration in a per-server-port YAML file. This lets separate instances use different rules, but it also means that editing the wrong port’s file has no effect on the server you are testing.

  1. Identify the port for the instance you are changing.
  2. Open that instance’s EXILED YAML configuration and locate the plugin’s section.
  3. Change one setting at a time, preserving YAML indentation and quoting.
  4. Set permission nodes and staff groups before enabling commands or administrative actions.
  5. Save a copy of the working file before further edits.

Remote Admin and the Server Console provide the reload plugins command. EXILED documents it as a way to reload plugins, including newly added ones. Dynamic updating is not automatically safe, however. EXILED warns that correct setup is required and that problems remain the responsibility of the plugin developer and host. Use the command only when the plugin author documents reload support; otherwise, stop and restart the server during a maintenance window.

A practical shortlist and scoring method

When several candidates solve the same problem, create a small comparison sheet rather than choosing the first result. Score each item from zero to two in the following areas: version evidence, purpose fit, permission clarity, configuration quality, maintenance activity, documentation, reload guidance, and rollback simplicity. A score of zero means the information is absent or unacceptable; two means it is explicit and satisfactory.

Rank #3
SCP Containment Breach Game Bloody Distressed Logo

Check 0 points 1 point 2 points
Version evidence No supported-version information Older or incomplete information Current SCP:SL and EXILED requirements are stated
Permissions Commands are unrestricted or unclear Some controls documented Every sensitive action has a named permission
Configuration Hard-coded behavior or no reference Basic settings only Defaults, feature flags, and examples are explained
Maintenance No visible activity Occasional updates Recent releases and responsive issue handling
Recovery No uninstall or data guidance Manual removal appears possible DLL, configuration, and persistent-data rollback are documented

The numbers are a decision aid, not an official ranking. Reject a candidate that fails a hard production requirement even if its total is high. For example, an economy plugin with no data-backup instructions should not be deployed merely because it has attractive features.

Test one plugin at a time

A controlled rollout makes failures diagnosable.

  1. Clone or reserve a staging instance with the same SCP:SL and EXILED versions as production.
  2. Install only the candidate DLL and leave unrelated plugins disabled.
  3. Start a short private round and exercise normal, edge-case, and administrator workflows.
  4. Inspect console output and log files for load errors, exceptions, permission failures, and repeated warnings.
  5. Measure practical effects: round-start delay, command response, message volume, and behavior after a restart.
  6. Change one configuration option, restart or safely reload as documented, and verify that the change took effect.
  7. Keep the previous DLL and YAML file until the new version has passed a complete maintenance cycle.

Only then combine it with another plugin. If two plugins touch spawning, round endings, punishment commands, or the same external integration, test that pair explicitly; compatibility cannot be inferred from each plugin working alone.

Common failure modes and recovery

The plugin does not appear to load

  • Confirm the file extension is .dll and that the file is in the EXILED Plugins directory for the server account.
  • Check that you installed it for the correct Windows roaming profile or Linux home directory.
  • Verify the plugin’s required EXILED and SCP:SL versions.
  • Read the first load error in the server log; later messages may be consequences rather than the cause.

The plugin loads but commands do nothing

  • Check the per-port YAML file, not a different instance’s configuration.
  • Review permission nodes and staff-group assignments.
  • Confirm that a feature flag or cooldown has not disabled the command.
  • Test from the intended Remote Admin or in-game role.

Two plugins behave unpredictably together

Disable the newest plugin, reproduce the issue, then re-enable candidates one at a time. Compare logs around the same event. If both plugins implement the same command or alter the same round phase, choose one owner for that behavior or configure one to stay passive.

Performance or stability gets worse

Return to the last known-good DLL and configuration, then restart rather than repeatedly reloading a plugin that may not support dynamic updates. Reintroduce the candidate on staging with high-frequency features disabled. Share the exact versions, configuration, logs, and reproduction steps with the plugin author.

A reload leaves stale state

Some plugins keep event subscriptions, caches, or player data in memory. If the author does not document safe dynamic updates, perform a full restart and treat reload-related errors as a plugin lifecycle issue rather than repeatedly issuing reload plugins.

Maintenance and upgrade policy

Set a routine for checking plugin release pages whenever SCP:SL or EXILED changes. Record the current DLL version, configuration backup, and installation date. Read changelogs before replacing a file; configuration keys, permissions, and persistent-data formats may change.

For each update:

  1. Read the new version’s requirements and migration notes.
  2. Back up the old DLL, YAML file, and any persistent data the author identifies.
  3. Test the new DLL alone on staging.
  4. Run a representative round and verify moderation, gameplay, integrations, and restart behavior.
  5. Schedule production downtime unless safe dynamic updating is explicitly documented.
  6. Keep the previous release available so a rollback is a file copy away.

Dynamic reload is a convenience, not a release strategy. A plugin can reload successfully while leaving stale state or breaking a later event. A clean restart during a planned window is the safer default when documentation is silent.

When managed hosting is relevant

EXILED requires access to a Windows or Linux server environment, its server account, and the plugin directories. Managed SCP:SL server hosting can be useful when you need a control panel, backups, file access, and a repeatable restart process, but verify that the service permits EXILED, DLL uploads, per-port configuration, console access, and log retrieval. If any of those are restricted, plugin troubleshooting becomes difficult regardless of the host’s advertised hardware.

For a managed SCP: Secret Laboratory server, Godlike.Host offers a game panel with SFTP/FTP access, up to three free backups a day with restore, and 24/7/365 support; verify that EXILED DLL uploads and per-port configuration are available on your plan.

Final selection checklist

  • Write the server goal in one sentence before searching for a plugin.
  • Confirm the exact SCP:SL and EXILED versions the plugin supports.
  • Prefer a release with current documentation and visible maintenance.
  • Review permissions, defaults, configuration format, and external data handling.
  • Install one DLL at a time in the correct Windows or Linux Plugins directory.
  • Inspect the generated per-port YAML configuration before enabling public access.
  • Test edge cases, logs, restart behavior, and interactions with existing plugins.
  • Use reload plugins only when safe dynamic updating is documented.
  • Keep rollback copies of the previous DLL and configuration.
  • Recheck every installed plugin after SCP:SL or EXILED updates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an official ranked list of the best EXILED plugins?

No. Official EXILED information describes the framework and installation process, not a permanently ranked third-party catalog. Evaluate each plugin against your server goal, version requirements, permissions, maintenance, and rollback plan.

Where do EXILED plugins go on Linux?

For the server user that runs the instance, the documented Linux Plugins directory is ~/.config/EXILED/Plugins. A different service account or home directory means a different effective path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I install a new plugin without restarting the server?

EXILED provides reload plugins through Remote Admin and the Server Console, but safe dynamic updating depends on the individual plugin. Follow the author’s guidance; restart during a maintenance window when reload support is not documented.

Why does a plugin work on one server port but not another?

EXILED configuration is normally stored per server port. Check that you edited the YAML file belonging to the instance you are actually running, and verify that the plugin DLL is visible to that instance’s server account.
